＜フィンチ工房のコンセプト＞

ジュウシマツの特徴を
①さえずり（求愛時♂）が楽しいこと
②尾が剣型で大きいこと
③身体が流線型でグラマーなこと
と捉えて

そのジュウシマツのボディーに
①新しい「柄」をデザインする
②新しい「色彩」をデザインする
③新しい「さえずり」をデザインする
ことをめざします

そのための道具として
工房は３つの「絵筆」
（＝交配技術）を選びました
①「パステル絵筆」
色素の組合わせ特性を使った
交配です
②「ハイブリッド絵筆」
キンパラ属の親戚から遺伝特性を
抽出移入する交配です
③「ソニック絵筆」
さえずりの学習と伝承の
法則を使った交配です
＊絵筆の名称はフィンチ工房流

十姉妹の起源は江戸時代に遡り
大名の間で流行した
「殿様の小鳥」です
学術的な種別はともかく
武家では
まず立派な「剣尾」が縁起良くて
見初められたのでしょう
それから求愛の「さえずり」が
人間の可聴音を多く含んで
（他のキンパラ属の小鳥の
　求愛歌は殆ど聞き取れない）
子沢山なのがおまけに良かった
さらに江戸時代後期には
「真っ白な羽」を含む十姉妹が出て
神が懸ってしまった
白ジュウ（純白）なんて神官級に
貴重扱いになった
なんていうのが
十姉妹の歴史ではないでしょうか

でも現在は忘れられ気味
日本の伝統復活をめざして
デザイン改革に挑もうというのが
フィンチ工房です

復活のデザインは
日本的なミニマリズムを基調
シンプルだけど
美しい
（日本人ではないけど
VERA WONGのウエディングドレス
にあるミニマリズム表現が目標です）
技術面では主に
「河端寛司のジュウシマツへの招待」
主催者の河端氏から
ご指導をいただいています

This is a website run by one of
amateur finch breeders in Tokyo.
The site especially focuses on Society Finches
or Bengalese Finches.

The Navigator is "Folio", a cyberspace character,
and an assistant for "Kaz" who is a breeder
and a designer of society finches at Studio.
Folio talks to you and guides you all the way.

【WITH A HOPE AND A DREAM】

Fisrt of all, what does it mean to design society finches?
It means to create new colors and styles for the finches!
The word "Studio" stands for that kind of artistic ambition.

Society finches have the origin in the wild,
but are never seen in the wild. The birds are refined
by human hands and chosen to be very close partners of
human being. Man has spent a long time to carve the birds
which finally become artistic masterpieces! In today's words,
society finches are the products of biotechnology.
Genetic discoveries and analysis of them are actually on the way,
which give us even deeper knowledge for breeding. Progress of society
finches is not just a history. Pearl Society, for example, a bird
with a metalic shine, was created in 1980's, just recently.

Note: Pearl Society was discovered by Isao Sekita in 1982.
He completed genetics for Pearl in 1985;
i.e. a genetic mutation found in Japan.

【GENETIC DESIGN FOR SOCIETY FINCH】

Referring to biotechnology, however, does not mean to use test tubes
and microscopes, norto manipulate DNAs.
Do you know, even today, that the most accuate, safe, and
inexpensive way to control genes is applying the Mendel's Laws?
It requires a certain amount of patience, but after all
effectively working DNAs will be formed by carefully applying
the Mendel's Laws.

For example, feather colors of society finches
are made by mixture of three color elements;
black, brown, and gray which is another form of brown.
Combinations of these three elements give us basic 24 colors.
Then, by crossing the color controling genes, more than 180 colors
can be created at the end! Isn't it so exciting?
All these can be achieved by thoughtfully planned breeding processes.
Finch Studio wishes to be a good breeder, and also an artist
and a designer with a brush of "the Mendel's Laws" to paint newly
and artistically designed society finches!

【BORN AND BRED AT THE STUDIO】

Cream-Ino Society is Studio's favorite and contorolling the gene
of the kind constitutes a major part of Studio's activity.
Design of finches will be mostly acheived by activating the "Ino" genes.
Literally its creamy color is the charm of a Cream-Ino Society.
Genetically it has very interesting nature that, for lack of black
and deep brown color elements, its original feather patern
with full coloring has been reduced to a subtle pastel picture.
Watching the birds closely and carefully, Studio refines
the beautiful and powerful nature of society finches.
Although Studio is not big, it enthusiastically develops cheerful
and charming society finches you have never seen before.

Note: Ino Society was discovered by Christine Jansen (Denmark) in 1984;
i.e. the most recent discovery made in European Society Finch.

Studio is still learning a lot of new things from people researching
society finches all over the world. What we do at Studio will be
innovated time to time. Well, so much for prologue statements!
