SHCOOL OF SONG :Music Lessons for Society Finch Bravo, bravo! When costumues ready, remember the importance of song. Like opera, the art of Society Finch(!) never completes without its aspiring courtship song. Although it is not an issue of genetics per se, to observe how courtship music is transmitted from generation to generation is very interesting. The third section of breeding techniques is about "song". ■
■TOP■TALENTED FINCHES ■NON-STOPPABLE MUSICAL ENERGY ■POP SONG LESSONS AT STUDIO 【TALENTED FINCHES】 Do you know that the process of learning language or song is unique only to Humans, Whales, and species of Birds! Isn't it something very awesome? It seems birds cannot "sing" without learning it, while it may cry without lessons. Courtship song of a cock especially requires a considerable amount of hard lessons. The case of a society finch cock is no exception. Dr. Kazuo Okanoya has studied this field for years. (He was a professor at Chiba University in Japan, and recently moved to RIKEN Brain Science Institute Laboratory for Biolinguistics Laboratory. He is a brain and linguistics scientist who studies brains of Society Finch to discover "language" in biological terms.) Extending Dr. Okanoya's research, Studio has applied some of the techniques for its finches, which are as follows: 1)"Freedom" Law Within its physical limitations; e.g. vocal range, length of breath, etc, Society Finch seems to learn almost any kinds of melodies on earth. Studio believes from years of experience that the flexibility can be maximum for Society Finch to learn melodies for its courtship song. Note: According to Dr. Okanaya's recent study, the brain of Society Finch possibly differs from the brain of its original species in the wild. Society Finch's brain "lacks" the function of "chosing the right melody" for courtship song. You may call it a "genetically damaged" brain; however, the "deregulated and freed" brain gives Society Finch a talent to learn various new songs. And man as a domestication master just loves it. 2)"Time-Window-is-Short" Law The song learning process starts 1 or 3 months after leaving the nest, which is about the same time the baby cock stops pleading for food. Then a carefully listening pose, similar to humans, may be observed. That is the sign you should not ignore. The baby picks its favorite melodies and tries to sing. The song may complete and be fixed in the next 4 to 5 months period. Basically this is the only term in life that the baby cock is able to learn the courtship song. Please also note that during this period, the baby cock can change its mind and learn totally different melodies. (This actually happened at Studio.) It is not a step-by-step process, but is extremely flexible. If you want the bird to pick specific music, make sure not to expose the baby bird to other sounds; otherwise, results may be catastrophic! Note: If so talented, why didn't we realize it? Perhaps it is because, unlike Myna Bird, another mimic talent, Society Finch learns new sounds only at its juvenile stage; which has been overlooked for a long time. 3)"Fixed-but-Fragile" Law An adult cock cannot pick any new songs anymore; however, the melody of its song may be transformed little by little for the time being. It seems the transformation happens generally by omitting or shortening some of the song phrases, or by changing the order of them, probably as a mistake. The memory is not perfect. Note: As mentioned above, Society Finch's brain has been "deregulated"; therefore, acquired freedom to learn new songs. Flip side of the coin is that Society Finch has also acquired freedom to forget! The memory system seems to be rather fragile. ■
■TOP■TALENTED FINCHES ■NON-STOPPABLE MUSICAL ENERGY ■POP SONG LESSONS AT STUDIO 【NON-STOPPABLE MUSICAL ENERGY】 Things have started in the heat of audition! The winner was Mr. Max, a nicknamed finch, Fawn, Dominant Pied, singing like Canary with a tenor voice. It was chosen to be the Master Society Finch of Music for the baby cocks at Studio. Well, tried, but it was tough. This is not a pure genetics thing, as we know a child of the Olympic medalist does not always become a good althlete. Since Canary is a bigger bird and has longer breath, to sing a Canary song is difficult for most of the society finches. Even the offspring birds of Mr. Max gave up practicing the song. Fortunately, the race of learning the song did not end there. The tenor voice was picked by the hybrid finch: Note: Once Dr. Okanoya asserted that a Society Finch cock learns a courtship song only from its father finch; which may not be always true. Actually cocks of Society Finch learn song from almost anyone or anything. ![]() ■
■TOP■TALENTED FINCHES ■NON-STOPPABLE MUSICAL ENERGY ■POP SONG LESSONS AT STUDIO 【POP SONG LESSONS AT STUDIO】 ![]() A society finch at Mr. Kawabata's Lab, Studio's genetics advisor, mimicked his speech! Being raised by human hand, the baby finch learned its name called as a courtship song. Finally we find the society finch that copies the human voice! We already have the society finch with a Canary song. We also find one that sings a "do-re-mi" song, though it is short. We see the other one sings like a Japanese bush warbler, "hoohokekyo". Can you believe that all of these are Society Finch? We do not know who taught them. But obviously a lot of people have tried successful music lessons for Society Finch. Since Society Finch seems to be very talented, Studio can be creative to give lessons to the birds for variety of new songs. Studio thinks the song of Kajika Frog, a Japanese river frog, or the similar song of an evening cicada will be nice for Society Finch. It is Japanese traditional favorite; The song can be arranged by modifying a part of the courtship song of White-Headed Munia, a relative species of Society Finch, and vocally easier for Society Finch to learn. Studio continues to challenge so that Society Finch may really become performing arts.
