| The definition of health today is not just an absence of sickness, illness or disease. As a human being, staying healthy should be tightly concerned also with one's living status. Making this concept clear "healty people 2000," a govermental guideline of healthy lifestyle in U.S and Canada, gives us seven generalized dimension of our healthy life. These dimensions are; 1 Physical dimension of Health 2 Emotional dimension of Health 3 Social dimension of Health 4 Intellectual dimension of health 5 Spiritual dimension of Health 6 Occupational dimension of Health 7 Environmental dimension of Health. This concept, I believe, is quite specific and target our common health concerns in up-to-date basis. As a matter of fact, our definition of health has been changed a lot. For example, a hundred years ago, where we were just getting industrialized agricultural technology, overnutrition could never be a major concern of health, as it is today. Our technology seems to have brought a great improvement in out lifestyle, but it also has brought new health concerns. In 21st century industrialized nations, we are coming across several new health concerns everyday. AIDS is absolutely one of them. Obesity, CVD and cancer are inreasing, regardless of clinical study and technology. Healthy people 2000 also emphasize on our health in social basis, which is a relatively new concept in this field. For example, a ten-year old girl who was born in a wealthy family, raised with sophiscated education, rich food and never had a sever disease, is she healthy if she doesn't have any friends in her school? No, she is not. She chould be healthy in the value of fifty years ago, but not any more. As a human being we are evolving, not physically, but intellectually and culturally. What we have to consider now is what is our ultimate goal for a happy life. That is the health concept. |
