Summary

After critiqued on four web sites, obviously showed that they included bad and good designs. Especially  the three web sites that I chose from the list in assignment. These web site contain some of the bad designs that can be said as a vital attack to a well designed web page. On the other hand, although the exceptional site met nearly all the requirements for a well designed web page, but there is still some of the elements need to be improved. The following will conclude the good and bad design for these four web sites.

Site-1:  How Stuff Works

Good Design:

  • users can easily find the topics through menu or icons and go to the desired page.

  • overall layout is quite attractive, and provide the  Search function incase people cannot find the articles.

Bad Design:

  • poor navigation because there isn't any links to let audiences to return to the main page. In my case, after I read an article, then I need to press the "Back" button on my Internet Explorer.

  • Menu function is inadequate because they just act like a normal link. For example,  "Video", "Book" in the web page.

Site-2: Northwestern University Library

Good Design:

  • provide the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the pages, users can navigate in a fast way. The web site also provides the site map which is very useful.

  • The layout of the web site is very formal, like using the common color-white,  give users an sense and that is, "well this web site seems is reliable, and must can give me what I want".

Bad Design:

  • use the grey color text on the white background, it make the users hard to see, users need to watch very carefully and also need to adjust the font size from their explorer.

  • The author use a lot of java scripts inside the web pages, in user consideration view, too many java scripts will slow down the computer, since not all the students are using fast computer, some of them maybe use some slow computers like Pentium I 133.

Site-3: Rolling Stone

Good Design:

  • provide the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the pages, users can navigate in a fast way. The web site also provides the site map which is very useful.

  • Use all black texts on a white color background. Users can read the contents very easily. Other colors like yellow and red background, the author had chosen black texts on yellow background and white color texts on red background. The author chose the correct colors to the page.

Bad Design:

  • Too much information on a page, make the readers feel dizzy, the web page doesn't include any scroll-down menus at all.

  • The author use a lot of java scripts inside the web pages, in user consideration view, too many java scripts will slow down the computer, since not all the students are using fast computer, some of them maybe use some slow computers like Pentium I 133.

Exceptional: Simslive BBS

Good Design:

  • Users can apply for the membership (free services of course) and they can adjust the settings like the style of the web page they want, using of theme, and different kinds of background, fonts when they are posting or replying in those forums. .

  • The Simslive server will record all the setting which set by the users and makes records for the members. After that, when a member revisit the page, all the setting will be loaded from the server of Simslive, the server will detect the cookies within the member's computer and give out the relevant settings to the users..

Bad Design:

  • Only support the Chinese Simplified text within the Explorer, and the web site is not multi-languages. In short, It's forbidden to allow foreign users to access.

To improve the Simslive BBS 's design, the author should considerate the other people, like the author should make the web page multi-lingual , because the main purpose of this web site is to deliver information, and exchange information too, that's why need to be international.
