毎年農民暦の5月5日に香港、台湾、中国ではドラゴンボートレースが行われます。この行事の歴史は中国の春秋時代にさかのぼります。中国歴史上最も古い詩人、愛国者である屈原が楚の暴君政治に対し反抗し、川に身投げすることによって反対の意を表しました。村人たちはこの勇気ある詩人を長い船に乗って探したということです。そしてこの日に川でなくなった屈原が、川にいる魚や蝦に食べられないように、村人は川にいる魚に粽を投げたそうです。
The Dragon Boat Festival is held annually on the fifth day of the fifth moon of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival commemorates the death, in 295 B.C., of a statesman and poet named Chu Yuan who drowned himself in protest against the corrupt government. Upon learning that the virtuous Yuan had jumped into the sea, the villagers set out in long paddle boats to search for him. The villagers threw rice balls wrapped with bamboo leaves in order to protect Yuan from fish.
2000年4月、毎日通っているTLIでドラゴンボートレース出場者の募集がありました。台湾の生活にも慣れ、退屈していた私は「これだ！」と早速申し込みました。
One day in April 2000, I found an advertisement recruiting people for the Dragon Boat Race. I thought it would be boring. I signed up without really thinking.
練習がいよいよ始まりました。5月8日から2週間は、週3回、朝の6時半から8時まで。その後は毎日。場所は基隆の川辺で行いました。原住民の英吉コーチが毎日の練習をみてくれます。メニューはジョギングから始まり、準備運動、オールの持ち方、こぎ方。。。。船に乗れるようになったのは5月の終わりになってからでした。
For the first two weeks, we practiced three times per week from 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. for the next four weeks we trained five times per week. Our coach, Yin-ji, is an Aborigine. For the first two weeks we were not allowed to row. We were only allowed to practise on land and improve our fitness with special exercises. We were only allowed to get into the boat by the end of May.
汚い川でした。普段はごみ。雨の次の日には魚の死体がぷかぷか浮かんでいるのです。後ろに見えるのはグランドホテル。景色はいいんだけどね。。。
The Jeelung River is very dirty. Every day we saw dead fish, car
doors and other floating debris. One crew member, a handsome
Australian called Dom, claims he saw a dead pig.
ボートをこいでいるときに必ず水が顔にかかります。その水が口に入り、嘔吐や下痢で苦しんだ人もいたほどです。
When we were rowing, the dirty water from the river splashed on
our faces. A few of us suffered from vomitting and diarrhea.
いつも台北市の消防団が練習にきていました。彼らは見るからに強そうで、筋肉もりもり。こんな人たちと戦うのか、勝ち目はないなー。と思っていました。
Every time we practised, the team fromTaipei City Fire and Marine
practised alongside us. By the size of their muscles, they were
obviously much stronger than us. It was also fairly obvious that
they had rowed boats for many years. We felt we could not beat
them.
台北で行われるドラゴンボートレースは2種類あり、台北県の試合は新店で、台北市の試合は基隆川でした。練習の最後の週に新店で練習した時の写真です。ここは水もきれいで景色も良かった。ボートの種類は基隆川のとは違い、スピードが速い、深い舟でした。
Every year, Taipei has two Dragon Boat races. Usually we trained on the dirty Jeelung River. However, we also trained at Taipei's other venue - HsinTian. This river was much better because the water much cleaner and the scenery was much prettier. This place also used different boats which made training more fun.
いよいよ試合当日。この日の天気は曇り時々雨。午後からはかなりの雨がふりだしました。国際混合という組み分けがなかったため、私たちが出場したのは「国際男子組」です。その他に、社会人の部、学生の部、女性の部などがあります。
On race day, the weather was cloudy. It rained from late afternoon. The races were categorized into many divisions: company boats, student boats, female boats........... Unfortunately, there was not a category for mixed novices. So, we had to compete in the International Men's Group.
私たちTLIチームは、TLIの生徒、先生、その友達から成り立っています。国籍はさまざまで、カナダ人、アメリカ人、オーストラリア人、日本人、フィリピン人、イギリス人、男女混合です。
Our team consisted of Japanese, American, Canadian, Australian, English, Duthch, New Zealander and Philippino men and women.
ボートに乗るのは、左右それぞれ8人ずつの漕手、後ろで舵をとる舵手1人、前で太鼓をたたき、みんなのリズムのリーダーをとる鼓手、ゴールの旗をとる標手の合計19人です。大直橋から４００Mの距離を、2回漕ぎ、そのタイムのいい方で競う、トーナメント方式です。
Each boat consited of 21competitors - 18 rowers, one coxswain, one drummer and one crazy person who sat precariously on the front of the boat to catch the flag on the finish line. The race started at DaZhi bridge and finished 400 meters later in front of the Grand Hotel. Each contest consisted of two boats racing twice. In this knockout tournament, the fastest of the four times progressed to the next round.
まったく期待していなかったのですが、なんと、一勝することができました。練習時はあんなに長くてつらかったコースも本番では、緊張していたせいかあっという間に終わりました。
師範大学は人数が多く、男子チームだったので、1度目はちょっとの差で、二度目はわれわれの体力の限界で、大差で敗れてしまいました。実際にはこの後敗者復活戦があります。敗者復活戦ではDragon
Air と対戦しましたが、こちらも敗れてしまいました。
To our great surprise, we won the first race. While in training the 400 meters felt like 400 kilometers, on Race Day, the race sped by. In the next round, we faced off against ShiDa. They were all big men. Some of my crew members even questioned their sexuality. We lost the first race by only a narrow margin. They killed us in the second race. This loss put us in the very auspicious Loser's Tournament. Of course, we lost to Dragon Air in the first round.
練習はとてもきつかったけど、ドラゴンボートレースに参加し、友達をたくさんつくれたということはわたしにとって最高の思い出になりました。
Although practice was hard work and inconvenient, I had a great deal of fun and made many new friends. The Australians were particularly cool!
