日本国憲法 前文
日本国憲法は、そもそもGHQが作成したものであり、その言語は英語である。
明治憲法の名残を払拭しきれない文体で書かれた旧態依然の言語表記を改め、
新憲法の趣旨がより色濃く出るような訳出を試みた。
憲法改正（改悪）が謳われるこのご時世だからこそ、改めてその理想を確認せん！
We, the Japanese people, acting through our duly elected representatives in the National Diet,
私たち、日本に住む人々は、信頼されて選び出された代表者によって国会を開き、以下のことを決意しました。
determined that we shall secure for ourselves and our posterity
私たちは、自分たち一人一人のために、そして私たちの子孫のために、
the fruits of peaceful cooperation with all nations
すべての国々と共に平和な関係を保てるように協力し合い、
and the blessings of liberty throughout this land,
この地上で人の住む至る所で、
人々一人一人が自由でいられることを実感できる世界をつくることを目指します。
and resolved that never again shall we be visited with the horrors of war
through the action of government,
そして、政府の行動によって戦争の恐怖が招かれるようなことは
今後二度と起こしてはならないことを胸に秘め、
do proclaim that sovereign power resides with the people
最後にものごとを決める力をもつのは、私たち一人一人であることを確認し、
and do firmly establish this Constitution.
強い意志を持って、ここに新しい憲法を制定します。
Government is a sacred trust of the people,
政府は、人々に心から信頼され、
the authority for which is derived from the people,
私たち一人一人によって導き出される最も責任の強い機関であり、
the powers of which are exercised by the representatives of the people,
私たちの中から選ばれた代表者によって最終決定を行う機関であり、
and the benefits of which are enjoyed by the people.
私たち一人一人の生活をよりよいものにするための機関でなくてはなりません。
This is a universal principle of mankind upon which this Constitution is founded.
この政府のあり方は、人類共通の基本的な決まりごとであり、
この憲法はその基本に従っているに過ぎません。
We reject and revoke all constitutions, laws, ordinances, and rescripts in conflict herewith.
この憲法を制定することを機に、紛争を目的とした組織、法律、条例、布告は、
かつてあったものはすべて廃止し、今後すべてを認めないものとします。
We, the Japanese people, desire peace for all time
私たち、日本に住む人々は、いつの時代も世界が平和であること、
and deeply conscious of the high ideals controlling human relationship,
人間同士の結びつきがうまく治まるような理想を求め続けることを、切実に望みます。
and we have determined to preserve our security and existence,
そして、私たち一人一人が安全に暮らし、お互いの存在が認め合える社会を守ることを決意し、
trusting in the justice and faith of the peace-loving peoples of the world.
世界中で人々が平和を望み、正しい判断と信念をもって行動することを信じます。
We desire to occupy an honored place in an international society striving for the preservation of peace,
私たちは、平和を守るために力を惜しまない国際社会の一員として認められ、
and the banishment of tyranny and slavery, oppression and intolerance for all time from the earth.
専制政治と奴隷制度、人々の自由を奪ったり、認めない力を、
この地球上に二度と現れないよう働きかけることを望みます。
We recognize that all peoples of the world have the right to live in the peace,
free from fear and want.
世界中の全ての人々が、平和な生活をおくり、
おびやかされたり、何かが足りなくて困ったりしないで生活することが当然でなくてはなりません。
We believe that no nation is responsible to itself alone,
一つの国が、その国だけで成り立つことはできないはずです。
but that laws of political morality are universal;
つまり、この憲法が基本とする政府をつくる上での決まりごとは世界共通であり、
and that obedience to such laws is incumbent upon all nations who would sustain their own sovereignty
and justify their sovereign relationship with other nations.
どの国も、自分の国のことは国内で決めながら、ほかの国々と良い関係を保つために、
それぞれの国が守らなければならない決まりごとであるはずです。
We, the Japanese people, pledge our national honor to accomplish these high ideals
and purposes with all our resources.
私たち、日本に住む人々は、これらの高い理想と目標を実行するために、全力を尽くすことによって、
一つの国として認められることを強く望みます。
