[n]は名詞、[v]は動詞、[a]は形容詞、[ad]は副詞と見て下さい。

Ａ
　A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. (訳)手中の1羽はやぶの中の2羽に値する。
→『明日の百より今日の五十』
あてにならないものに期待をかけるより、多少は悪くとも確実なものの方がよいということ。

　A burnt child dreads the fire. (訳)火傷をした子どもは火を怖がる。
→『あつものに懲りてなますを吹く』
熱い吸い物を飲んでやけどをしたのにこりて、冷たいなますも吹いてさますという意。前の失敗にこりて必要以上の用心をすることのたとえ。

　Accidents will happen. →事故は起こるものである。

　A cornered rat is dangerous. (訳)追い詰められたネズミは危険だ。
→『窮鼠猫を噛む』

　A drowing man will catch at a straw. →『溺れる者は藁をもつかむ』

　A friend in need is a friend indeed. need:[N][U]困った事態、窮地。
→『まさかの時の友こそ真の友』
単にA friend in need.とも言う。

　All is well that ends well. →『終わり良ければ全て良し』

　All that glitters is not gold.
＝All is not gold that glitters. 		glitter:[v]ぴかぴか光る、きらきら輝く、煌めく。
(訳)光るもの全てが金とは限らない。
→『人は見かけによらぬもの』

　All roads lead to Rome. →『総ての道はローマに通ず』
(ラ＝フォンテーヌ「寓話集」の言葉)やり方は違っていても、目的は同じであること、また、物事が一つの真理から発していることの例え。

　All work and noplay makes Jack a dull boy. dull:[a]頭の鈍い、飲み込みの悪い/退屈な
→『よく遊びよく学べ』

　An Englishman's houce is his castle. →イングランド人にとっては家は城である
★Englishmanという単語はScotsman,Welshman,Irishmanとは区別して使いましょう。侮辱だと受けとれられかねないそうです。

　A nod is as good as a wink (to a blind man). (訳)(目の見えない人には)うなずきも目配せも同じ事。
→『馬の耳に念仏』
[「合図やヒントだけで充分でありいちいち説明する必要はない」の意でもよく用いる]

　A penny saved is a penny earned[gained]. →節約した１ペニーは儲けた１ペニーと同じ


　A rolling stone gathers no moss. →『転石苔を生ぜず』（元は英語の訳語）

　A stitch in time saves nine. (訳)早めにひと針縫っておけば、ほころびてから９針縫う手間が省ける。
→『転ばぬ先の杖』『今日の一針明日の十針』
≒Look before you leap.

　A tree is known by its fruit. (訳)果実を見れば木の善し悪しが解る。
→子を見れば親が解る、人は仕事ぶりで判断できる

　A watched pot never boils. (訳)鍋を見つめているとなかなか沸かない。
→『待つ身は長い』
焦っても無駄だと言うこと。

　A wonder lasts but nine days. last:[v]続く、継続する
(訳)驚くべき事も九日しか続かない。
→『人の噂も七十五日』
＝The public memory is a short one.

　A word (is enough) to the wise. wise:[n]賢者
(訳)賢者には一語で足りる。
