Sachiko's Page

Hollow everyone. Welcome to my home page. I would like to introduce myself.
PHOENIX AND I
First, I want to focus on leaning English at Phoenix English College . My name is Sachiko and I am one of the old students at this school. I entered this school when it was located in Shinjyuku-Gyoen and called gMatsumoto Eigo Senmon Gakkou. At that time, I could not understand English at all and I was so upset in all classes.
Especially Mrs.Inagakifs class was hard for me. She is the principal of this school and is very famous because she is so aggressive and active. Sometimes she slaps and kicks someone who cannot answer her questions smoothly jokingly. Fortunately, I could escape from such a punishment because her target was young boys and girls. However, she has a special power to encourage students to study English.
Mr. Ishiwata is very strict with pronunciation and in his class I could not pronounce English very well although I practiced pronunciation before class very hare. I always felt miserable. One day, he said you were not so young as other students and you have spoken Japanese for a long time and it was so helpless. I could understand what he meant but I felt sad.
On the other hand, there was a good thing; I could make many different kinds of friends though leaning English together.@Including new friends, leaning English was a new world for me and my life had been changed after entering school. At that time I could not imagine I would continue to attend this school until now.
NUCLEAR ENERGY IN JAPAN
| Letfs
move on the next phase which is related to my job. Now, I
am working for some agency under the Government of Japan
in the field of nuclear energy. I am an administrative
worker and not scientist nor engineer. Have you ever thought of energy of Japan?
Energy is an important issue which relates to all aspects
of our life; politics, economy, environment, industrial
activities, local community and individual life. Although
there are not enough natural resources in Japan, the
amount of consumption of energy has increased year by
year. However, people are not interested in or do not
understand enough about these matters, even though they
have to recognize energy issues and the huge demands and
supplies that will present problems in the future. |
| The public are not in favor of nuclear energy and development very much which generates approximately 35 % of the total electricity supply in Japan. There are some people who are emotionally hate nuclear power. Furthermore, unfortunately, the accident occurred at JCO in Tokai-mura last September. This was the worst nuclear accident ever happened in Japan. The impact of the accident on the public opinion on nuclear energy is so big that its influence on nuclear development is not foreseen. I think what we should to do now is to understand correct knowledge and information and disseminate those knowledege to the public so that we can choose adequate energy sources by ourselves. | ![]() |
| VISITING
VIETNAM Next, I will tell you my job experiences. As I said before, I am working for an Agency related to energy as one of the staff members of the Office of International Affairs. I have many chances to meet foreign scientists not only in Japan but also in their countries mostly in Asia. So far I have visited Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam on business and I had English presentations there. Fortunately, I had a little time I could enjoy sight-seeing in each country. Among those countries, the country I got the most interesting impression was Vietnam. In Vietnam there were many things I was surprised at. I imagined I would see miserable scars of the war but I couldn't see any. The country was on the process of modernization and people were so active. There are so many motorcycles and first I could not cross the street because there were no traffic lights. I could also see a lot of high-rise buildings under construction here and there. On the other hand, behind the busy main streets, there were old Chinese-style and French rococo style buildings, which harmonized with each other and made mysterious atmosphere. Please visit Vietnam if you have a chance. I assure you would be interested in this modern and mysterious country. |

HAWAII HONOLULU MARATHON
![]() |
Next I will introduce one of my hobbies. I believe
physical strength produces mental energy, so I try to go
to the gym and go jogging on Saturdays and Sundays as
much as possible. Besides these exercises get rid of my
stress and make me feel refreshed. Seven years ago, I
joined Hawaii Honolulu marathon. It was the first
time for me to run 42 km. We started early in the morning
with fireworks. There were so many Japanese participants
and I could not feel I was in Hawaii. Because there
were so many participants, it took fifteen minutes for me
to start running . After one
hour, I watched a beautiful sunrise. I could
run till 30 km smoothly but after that I had a pain in my
legs and I got out of breath. I really
wanted to quit the race, but many volunteers served
fresh water and some fruits and encouraged me, so I got
the power from them and I could continue running again. Almost five hours later, I could see the goal and I
heard a shout of joy. When I reached the goal,
tears rolled down my cheeks. It was tough
for me to run such a long distance but I could not forget
deep impression when I reached the goal no matter how
long I took. It taught me how important to achieve
something. |
MY DREAM
| Through learning English, I experienced many things:
something related to not only my job but also my hobbies.
I would like to use English more in the near future.
One of the ways is to be a tour guide for
foreigners in Japan. I took a tour guide class at
Phoenix before and I realized Japan has a very
traditional and beautiful culture. Furthermore,
though my job I have had a lot of chance to talk with
guests from abroad. They asked me a lot of questions
about Japanese culture. I could not make good
explanations for them, but they looked so satisfied.
I understood they are proud of their own culture but at
the same time they are also interested in other countriesf
cultures very much. After that I became more
interested in Japanese culture and tried to know it
deeper than before. I decided I would acquire more
skills to explain Japanese culture in English in the
future. Another way to use English is to study abroad. I hope I can and go to college abroad and learn English. So far, I have visited many countries but have never lived anywhere. I am interested in different countryfs cultures as my guests I met in Japan. Of course, I want to continue enjoying running some beautiful places in the world like Honolulu. |
