There were no white men in Nevada until 1826. Las Vegas got its name in 1829. It means “The Meadows”. It served as a stopping place for wagon trains for nearly 20 years. Then a monthly mail route was established and Mormon colonists came to build a mission. In the early 1860s prospectors and miners came to try their luck. In 1905 the Union Pacific Railroad routed its trains. With the coming of the railroad, the growth of Las Vegas continued. Easy divorce laws and legalized gambling also contributed to the early population boom. By 1955 the Golden Gate Casino was in operation. By the 1950s Las Vegas had become a true vacation destination. In 1995 the population of Clark County reached the one million mark and at this time is the nation’s fastest growing city.
