Substantive Research
Mr. Chon Chanyon
As acquiring English is the aim for many people, there are many researches that has done by linguist and all other people who had gone through studying English. Mr. Chon Chanyon is one of them. He had written a book called ¡ÈDon¡Çt ever learn English¡É(2001). He had his own theory of learning English from his experience. He says that his theory could be not only adapted to English but also to any other languages used in the word. The point is to make the language a custom to you. His way of learning had several stages;
| First step | listen to a tape that is totally in English. The tape can be any topic you would like to improve. The most important thing is to listen to the pronunciations (the sound of the word and the accent), neither the detail nor the story. Do this two times a day and make a day off to make your brain marshaled. Do this until you think you could hear every single word. |
| Second step | write down the words you hear from the tape. Write sentence by sentence and assume the spelling if you don¡Çt know. Then read the writing at loud, the same way the tape did. |
| Third step | look up the words you didn¡Çt know in the English-English dictionary. If you hit upon a word that you didn¡Çt know in the dictionary, look the word up in the dictionary till you know the meaning. |
| Fourth step | watch a movie and do the same 1~3 step that I mention above. |
| Fifth step | read the English newspaper. Then summarize the article as you are explaining to others. Do this with every article and advertisement. |
As you finish these steps, you¡Çll be able to speak as fluently as a native speaker. The important point is follow the step faithfully and don¡Çt skip. Chanyon(2001).
As you can see, he¡Çs step is following the
way we learnt our first Language. First step
is listening. It is when we are baby, getting
a sound (language which was use in your country)
from the outside. We imitate what adults
are saying and learn to speak. We used dictionary
that is in our own language and get to know
the slight difference of the word. We gain
words from all aspects of life, playing,
watching T.V., reading books and newspapers.
This method was adapted to many Korean people
and had effective result in learning English.

Heinrich Schliemann
Famous person, known as successfully learnt
15 languages, was Mr. Heinrich Schliemann.
He¡Çs learning method was to read huge amount
aloud, do not translate, write a essay which
topic is interesting to you and bring it
to the teacher to correct his writing and
memorize the essay that the teacher corrected.
For the pronunciations, he went to the church
every Sunday twice and copied what the clergyman
was saying in a low voice. Always carried
a book to memorize and study every moment
that he could. (Deuel, 1977) He applied this method to every new language
that he learnt. It took only half a year
to acquire English. As for French, it took
six month.
