*Large Supermarket*
Title:
A Large Supermarket Reduces Communication among Neighbors
Structure:
(1) Introduction
(2) Communication with individual shopkeepers in the neighborhoods
(3) Little communication with workers in a large supermarket
Example:
It is true that a large supermarket is very convenient: for example, we can buy meat, fish, vegetable, and groceries at one place. In addition to its convenience, it is usually more spacious and brighter than individual retail shops. As a result, it attracts and deprives customers of individual retail shops. A new large supermarket may be welcomed by ordinary customers. However, on my part, I oppose the new supermarket to be set up in my town because it reduces communication among neighbors.
A large supermarket does harm to the neighborhoods because it reduces communication between the neighbors and creates a cold society. In my neighborhoods, when I was a small child there used to be an individual fish shop, butcher's, grocer, and cheap candy shop. These shopkeepers knew who I was, and they called me by my name. We are so close that we greeted each other anywhere in the neighborhoods. Moreover, they sometimes give me a small piece of chocolate as a gratuity. I felt their affection to me. In addition, at my father's funeral, they attended and condoled with my family. I felt as if the neighbors protected my family and my father should be glad that so many neighbors came to his funeral.
I am afraid that a large supermarket will destroy such communication among the neighbors. When I am shopping in a large supermarket, no shopkeepers call me by my name, and know who I am. I am quite sure that no worker in a supermarket would come to the funeral of my father. It is a very cold society, isn't it? A large supermarket makes a society where little conversation is taken place, and members of such a society should feel lonely. Therefore, I oppose the large supermarket to be set up in my neighbors.
