Class of 2004 Program Kickoff

The Class of 2004 began their program on February 23 in Kashima, Japan.  The students gathered together for the first time to hear words of encouragement from several Asia GMBA enthusiasts.  Students were welcomed by Mr. Daewhan Chang, President and Editor of the Maeil Business Newspaper before receiving a motivating message from Professor E. Han Kim, the Director of the East Asia Management Development Center. Closing Remarks were made by Professor Takaaki Wakasugi, Professor of Economics at the University of Tokyo and an Advisor to the East Asia Management Development Center.  Immediately following the Program Kickoff, students moved to the dining room at the Sumitomo Metal Training Center for the first of many dinners they will share together.

Class of 2003 Farewell Dinner

A special Farewell Dinner for Asia GMBA Class of 2003 students and spouses was held on Friday, April 4 in Phelps Lounge at the Business School.  Students and Professors joined together for one last time to share their parting sentiments.  Several students and professors were eager to share their feelings with the group.  Students expressed mixed emotions of their joy of completion of the program, and their sorrow that it is almost over.  It was hard for students to say good bye to colleagues they hardly knew a short 14 months ago, who they now regard as friends.  Professors commented over and over again at the incredible progress each student in the class has made and of how proud they are of the AGMBA Class of 2003.

Class of 2003 Multidisciplinary Action Project
Teams for the Asia MAP were announced in February.  The Class of 2003 had 7 MAP projects to choose from.  Teams have been assigned and leaders have been appointed.   Participating host companies for this year include:  Avon Gear Company, Bexel Corporation, Hyundai America Technical Center, Hyundai Oilbank, Kyobo Life Insurance, POSCO, and Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance Company.

Each team will focus their attention on a real-life situation.  This year teams are faced with the challenges of research and development, implementation of improved quality standards, development of performance measurement criteria and processes, implementation of e-business strategy, analysis of an Employee Stock Option Plan, and redesigning a corporate marketing plan for global competition.  Student teams will report to their Project Host Company on May 14.  Each student team will work with a dedicated host company liaison to address the situation, develop a plan, and follow through on the plan to provide recommendations to the Project Host Companies.  Guided by University of Michigan Business School Faculty members, each student team will produce a report and present their recommendations to the Project Host Company in July.

If your company is interested in hosting a MAP team, please download the Application and Draft Project Proposal form at the download section of the EAMDC website (www.eamdc.bus.umich.edu).  We will begin accepting applications for the Class of 2004 MAP in the fall of 2003.  If you have any questions about the MAP for the Asia Global MBA, please contact Linda Lillemoen at llillemo@umich.edu or 734-764-6411.

North Korea Panel Discussion at the University's Ann Arbor Campus

Former U.S. Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, South Korean Ambassador Yang Sung Chul, and former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Donald Gregg participated in a panel discussion on North Korea on March 18, 2003 in Hale Auditorium at the University of Michigan Business School.  The panel was moderated by Professor Ken Lieberthal.  Key issues included why North and South Korea’s economic performance is so drastically different, why is North Korea trying to revive its nuclear weapon program, and what can the world do to maintain peace in northeast Asia.  The panel tended towards criticizing the Bush Administration’s policy toward North Korea and the North Korean leader Kim Jung Il.  The panel agreed that the most important first step to resolving issues on the Korean peninsula is initiating and maintaining diplomatic dialogue with North Korea.  Kim Jung Il was the topic of many comments during the discussion.  And although viewed as peculiar and difficult, the panel believes it is still possible and very necessary to have a functional relationship with him.
