Leading In Thought and Action

University of Michigan Business School has launched its new positioning statement – “Leading in Thought and Action” – to reflect its focus on faculty research and action-oriented programming.  As the Business School continued to inculcate this sharpened mindset, an updated graphic identity was unveiled.

A familiar face gets a fresh look with our new logo and identity.

The EAMDC is a prime example of that focus.  By employing some of the best faculty within the business school and constantly challenging students to use their knowledge in real-world applications, EAMDC is training the next wave of global business leaders.

Building a Core Knowledge Base

While the rest of the University of Michigan students and staff enjoy the slow pace of summer, the Asia GMBA Class of 2004 has been toiling away in the “heat.”  With the temptations of an unusually mild season in Ann Arbor, students worked extra hard to stay focused on their studies.  But nice weather and the lazy days of summer are no match to the lure of challenging curriculum and world-class faculty.

Professor Jerry Davis' course on Human Behavior and Organization proved that good students love a challenge.

Students were riveted by the compelling lessons in Professor Linda Lim's World Economy class as well as Michael Johnson's Marketing Management.

Professor Brian Talbot piqued students' interest in Operations Management.

Jerry Davis presenting Human Behavior and Organization, Brian Talbot teaching Operations Management, Michael Johnson guiding students through Marketing Management, and Linda Lim demystifying the World Economy were there to envigorate students and fuel their quest for knowledge.

Studying: Morning, Noon and Night

One key concept that Michael Johnson helped many students understand was that the library does close eventually – you can’t stay all night.  The simulated marketing project experienced during Marketing Management kept students working from early in the morning until very late at night.

Starting their day with textbooks, laptops and coffee are (left to right) Hong Seok Park of Daewoo E&C,  Young Cheol Yoon of SK C&C, Hong Lyul Kim of Kookmin Bank, Jane Chen of Chang-Ho Fibre, and Min Chang Kwack of SKC Chemical Group.

As the day goes on, the discussion heats up for (left to right) Tae Eun Kim of SK Telecom, Taeseop Kwon of Kyobo Life Insurance, Hyunjoo Lee of Hana Bank,
and Kenichiro Morishima of Nippon Steel.

Wondering if they will have any profits by 9:30 pm (21:30) are Fumiaki Inoue of JCB, Leonardo Park of UNICOBA, Masao Fujii of Chugoku Electric, Shinnosuke Iisuka of Sumitomo Bank and Hae-Sung Park of Hyundai Motor.

In the words of UMBS Dean Robert J. Dolan, “We connect theory and practice, bridging business scholarship and business practice. This is our unique approach---action-based learning and interdisciplinary, team-oriented situations that develop leaders and ideas that change the world.”

Class of 2003 Gift

Out of gratitude for an excellent educational experience, Sangdae Kim of Hyundai Motor presented the Business School with a donation on behalf of the Asia GMBA Class of 2003.  Gifts like these are both a valuable part of the school’s continued tradition of excellence and a measure of that success.

Dean Dolan returned the thanks.

Dear Mr. Kim:

On behalf of our entire community, I am writing to express our deep appreciation for your generous gift to the University of Michigan Business School.  In pursuit of our mission to educate leaders for the global business environment, gifts such as yours provide a flexible resource for realizing important opportunities.

Personally, I am delighted that your participation in our Global MBA Program was both productive and enjoyable.  Your positive experience mirrors our desire to develop responsible leaders who have the knowledge, skills and perspective to be successful in the widening world of international business.

We are very grateful for your support.

Sincerely,
Robert J. Dolan, Dean

Class of 2005

The recruiting process that will fill the ranks of next year’s class is continuing.  The pace of incoming applications has been increasing as the October 31st application deadline draws nearer.  It looks like the next class will be more diverse and more competitive than ever.

Companies and individuals who are interested in applying to the program can find information and application forms on our website www.eamdc.bus.umich.edu under the Downloads section.  EAMDC requests that alumni and current students pass this information along to their colleagues who would be well-suited to this program.

A Brief Reprieve

Behind every successful global leader is the ability to build relationships.  Professor Paul Damien gave students the opportunity for a free mini-course on international relations in the form of a party at his house.  Students seemed to greatly enjoy the intensive study.

Professor Paul Damien instructs Yusuke Kurogi of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries on proper CEO posture.  Hyun Joo Choi got to sit in on the “class” with her old friend Tae Eun Kim of SK Telecom and her new friend Hyungjoo Lee of Hana Bank.  Meanwhile, PhD Finance student Marcin Kacperczyk and his sister, Olena Kacperczyk, a visitng summer intern in Corporate Strategy, enjoy mingling with Seong Jib Kim of Kookmin Bank.
