量の表現は、日本語では述部にくることが多いが、英語では主語の前につけることが多い。

話し言葉の場合、肯定文ではmany, muchはあまり用いない。(so much, too muchは別。) business letterや堅い文を除いて、a lot of/lots ofを用いる。逆に否定文では、a lot ofよりもmany, muchが普通。

「〜が少なくない」は話し言葉の場合、not a fewよりも、quite a fewの方が自然。

「ほとんどない」は、fewよりもnot many、littleよりもnot muchのほうが自然。

「〜が増えてきている」は通常、More and more 複数名詞 are Ving. 日本語の形に近い、The number of 複数名詞 is increasing.も使える。不可算名詞の場合はThe
amount of 単数名詞 is increasing.
「〜が減っている」は、fewer and fewer 可算名詞複数形 are Ving. Less and less 不可算名詞単数形 is
Ving. または、The number/amount of 名詞 is
decreasing.

「〜な人が何百人といる」もこの形。普通、three hundred というように、 hundred/thousand/million は単数形だが、「何〜」というときは複数形。
(e.g.)Thousands of people in the world are starving.
〜例〜
１：最近では大学に入学することが人生の目的だと思って
いる学生が多い。
作例：These day, a lot of students think that
getting into colleges is their goalin life.
[最近では]-現在時制では these day/nowadays
その他では recently/in recent years
[人生の]-in life
２：幸福が身近なところにあることに気づいている人は少
ない。
作例：Few people realize that happiness is
around themselvs.
３：日本で働く外国人の数がいぜん増えている。
作例：The number of foreigners working in Japan
continue to increase.
４：文学に関する書物を暇つぶしに読む人はほとんどいな
い。
作例：Very few people read literary works to kill
time.
