Natto Episodes

Episode 1:

Washed natto thinking it had gone ebadf, then microwaved it just to be safe. The smell increased and so ended up throwing all the natto away in the rubbish. (n.b. when heated up, natto increases its smell, but after cooking, the esmellf is decreased, and tastes better; just like garlic)

Episode2:

It is common knowledge among the Japanese that non-Japanese people cannot eat natto – usually.  Some Japanese use ewhether one can eat nattof as a test for how authentically gJapaneseh that non-Japanese person is.

One NZer was asked to try natto. He was very fluent in Japanese, had worked in Japan for several years, and became a target of the test; how authentically Japanese he really was. When his facial expressions revealed that eating natto was not a pleasant experience, the Japanese let out a sigh of reliefc?! ..Japanese food culture is  not all that simple.

Episode 3:

Natto mixed wit Korean Kimchi has effects of preventing blood clots. To see if Koreans would like the taste, Daizu-kun asked his Korean friend to try Natto with Kimchi. To his surprise, he was told the Koreans do eat something similar, but they put it into soup instead.  Explaining how good natto tastes, Daizu-kun got his friend to try it out. As his friend put it into his mouth, there was a perplexed expression on his face, but still he said eItfs not too bad.f

Later in the kitchen, there was preparation for soupc

Episode 4:

Japan Day 2003

Response from Kiwis seeing it for the first time:

gWhat on earth is this?h gIs this tuna-roll?h (pointing to the natto sushi)

 After tasting natto in miso-soup:

gI like ith

Response from Kiwis who eknowf natto:

gOh, Natto, I love thish gI know Natto, but I donft like thish gI donft eat Natto myself, but my wife loves ith

Some Chinese mistook Natto for a similar-looking soy product they have in China . Their version of the soy beans taste sweet, and are mixed with pickled vegetables in stir-fry.

Some demanded they get their money back.

Natto miso-soup was fairly well received even by those who do not usually like natto. Quite a few couples, one of which was Japanese could be seen being epersuadedf to try natto by their Japanese partners. Maybe they were eput to the testf as in Episode 2??
