Cairo Opera House
In the center of Cairo, there is the Cairo Opera House in the south of Gezila island of the River Nile. In addition to opera and ballet performances, symphonic concerts and folk music, drama works have been presented at the Opera House. Many music gores are enjoying them.
The Egyptians have been acquainted with the opera in 1841 when an Italian itinerate group presented
“L' Elisir' damore” in Alexandria. In 1869 The Khedive Ismail Pacha decided to construct an Opera House in Cairo on the honor of the opening of the Suez Canal. The Kahedival Opera House with the hall of 850 seats was constructed in six months.

The Opera House was burned down in November 1971. In April 1983, during the visit of Egyptian President
Housuni Moubarak to Tokyo, the Japanese Government announced to its intention to offer an new Opera House to Egypt. The construction commenced in March 1984 and lasted for 34 months. The new Opera House was inaugurated in October 1988 in the presence of President Moubarak. It started with contemporaneous Egyptian music and was followed by Japanese Kabuki.The building of the Opera House in Islamic modern style is composed of courts, domes and arches of concrete covered with Egyptian beige stone. With a marbles ground and windowpanes of colored glass, the building arouses the admiration of its spectators because of its situation near the banks of the Nile. The Opera House consists of
the Main Hall with the capacity of 1,200 audiences, the Small Hall with 450 seats and the Open Air Theater hosted 650 spectators.

The National Culture Center of the Ministry of Culture, the Opera House, has from
Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Cairo Opera Orchestra, Cairo Opera Choir & Cairo Opera Choir, Cairo Opera Ballet Company, Cairo Opera Dance Theater and Sofia Opera Choir to The Arabic Music and Religious Recitation Group, The National Arabic Ensemble for Music, The Children's Choir and Educative Center for Talents.



Operas and Ballets at Opera House
Most of concerts held at the Opera House are classical or Arabic music. In addition to these, jazz concerts and modern dance performances sometimes presented at the Small Hall, the Open Air Theater and the other small theater own by the Culture Center. The troupes belong to the National Culture Center have their performances at the Opera House regularly and overseas companies appear at the Opera House as well.
