Russian Jet Fighters
Even U.S.S.R was one of biggest country, as to Jet technology and economy, there was a big distance from western Europe and America.
U.S.S.R settled this problem with Germany engineers and technology.
But the way for development was quite different from America.
U.S.S.R have so large land, it needed to prepair a lot number of fighters.
It meaned that quality was second problem.
It was said that American fighters made with "technology pushing" and Russian fighters made by require of demand.
For instance, In Russia all-weather rader, one plane of formation attached, other planes attached only gun sight rader. But this filled the require. However, for long time it was secret about jet fighters of Russia. It helped to hide defeated technology than America.

MiG-21F/ MiG-21bis Fishbed
It was quit dramatic event that Ye-5 (Prototype of MiG-21) Fishbed appeared at 1956 Tsushino (Near Moscow) Air-Show with Ye-2A (NATO code 'Faceplate'). MiG prepaired two wing type fightrs. One was conventional figure, another was delta wing.
Both fighter flied pass and landing. Western correspondents confused that both type were already in production stage, even these were prototype.
I looked this Fishbed pictures in "Aireview" magazine.
Though the pictures were faded, it was exciting matter that Russia was ready to fight.
MiG-21 have very simple structure and smart figure. It also have a good level of interception ability.
Low cost and easy maintenance enabled for the third world to have supersonic squadrons. Russia supplied a lot of MiG-21 for friend countries. So MiG-21 producted over 10,000 inner or outer Russia.
Maybe any other could not record even in the future.
Of cource, Fishbed have some weak point. Too short foot (range), short interval of engine overhall, Less arms and hard points, severe and nervous control.
It needed severe control especially fuels left a little.
But in the Vietnum war, Fishbed could fighted with early model of F-4 with over eqal level.
Even though Fishbed is cheep and symple, it could satisfy in some objects still now.
Recentry, That Israel strted the commerse to reconstruction of MiG-21.
Many air force could nut get any new fighters by the economic circumstsnces.
So now they could refresh MiG-21 by modern western technology at less cost.

MiG YE-2 Experimental
When MiG-21 developping, orthodox swept-back wing type (like MiG-17/19) had also developped as Ye-2. Both Ye-5 and Ye-2 appeared on 1956 Tsushino air-show, and Westrn World flightened to show them.
Even F-104's First-flight was 1954, Western world believed that both type fighters had be prepaired enoughly, That seemed Soviet Russia
had advanced technology and force to shut-up B-47 and B-52. Of cource, it mabe was a Russian stragetic advertisement.
Ye-5 and Ye-2 were very similar figure except wings, and almost similar specification, and Russia selected Ye-5 as MiG-21 by the reason that Ye-5 was rather simple and light weight.

MiG YE-8(E-8) Experimental
Nose-mounted Air-intake prevents to enlarge Rader. Mig-21PF's rader is rather excellent as smaller size rader. But missile guide system (large and heavy) could not
set in too tight fuselage. So experimental model that air-intake were moved under the fuselage had constructed.
Also engine had changed from R-11F-300(3,900/5,755kg) to R-21F-300(4,700/7,200kg). And canade attached in front of cockpit, to develop stability and maneuver.
Two Ye-8 prototypes were built. But R-21-300 engine was so bad that one of prototype crashed, Another prototype could not solve engine and technical problems.
So the YE-8's development itself was cancelled.

MiG Project 41(33) Planned
Both Early 1970s and 1980s, Soviet Russia and Mikoyan planned a successor of MiG-21.
Former was 'Project-33' latter was 'Project-41'. 'Project-33' was like 'F-15 and F-16', Single-engined 'Su-27'.
'Project-41' planned its engine R-33D, as 'F-18 and F-20', single-engined 'MiG-29'.
Each plan cancelled with many factor, maybe most important reaspn was cost-performance, it was not reach enough expected level.
Illustration is drawn with my idea, so maybe not correct somewhere.
But it define the difference of 1960-70s(i.e. YE-8) and 1980-1990s.
Air-intake consists with enlarged and shaped rectangle and diverterless shock-cone, make good and enough air-flow for turbo-fan engine.
Also it is simple and less weight. these technology were extended and exported to Chinese J-10 and J-17.
And it is said that J-17 was mainly constructed with 'project-41' plan.
Big nose-rader-dome and cockpit shaped rather dull to make lift, Big-cockpit takes good sight. Vertical tail wing rised-up and take good maneuver and stability.
These maybe deleterious for speed, but Current Air-Forces do not mention Mach two plus ability for this class multirole fighter.

MiG-23 Flogger/ MiG-27 Flogger D/J
MiG-23 mainly mentioned to improve the shortage of paylord and range,
in other word, for tactics leveled fighters.
MiG engeneer cleared this problem to attach variable swept wing.
It could not change the degree automatically. But later model have automatic adjustment system on flaps.
Otherside, this mechanism constructed simply and economically.
Since rather heavy weight than fixed-wing fighter, so dog-fight ability is poor than F-14 or Mig-21.

MiG-27 is a variation of MiG-23. All-weather rader changed for the lazer system of attack and missile controler, to attack ground base.
Air intake shaped simple than MiG-23. It looks barbarously than MiG-23. Western base afraided MiG-23 very much.

MiG-25 suddenly appeared in Hakodate Airport. Oppotunately U.S get the details of the top secret of Russian fighter.
In some point, MiG-25 was really mach 3 class fighter, but many potentials were poor than they conjected.
U.S. regarded people noticed that exaggerated for MiG-25.
MiG-25 have big rader, big AAM, fastest speed,that's all.
Too small canopy prevents pilot sight. His duty is only carry missile under the guide of Ground Air Base.
As the first object of MiG-25 was to prevent the invade of B-70 or A-12.
B-70 and A-12 were cancelled, but MiG-25 development had continued.
Mig-25 could fly faster, and it must fly faster.
Because its Jet engine tuned for fast speed. It is similar as SR-71.

MiG-31 looks like MiG-25. MiG-31 powered with turvo-fan engine to improve gas consumption.

MiG-29 Fulcrum
MiG-29 and Sukhoi-27 are half brother.
Their style are almost same except size.
But there are a lot of difference of constructions.
This means both company used similar design with each technology.
Worst weak point is short foot. It could not have integral fuel tank in wing.
So tank integrated Su-27 had largely recepted in Russia.
But MiG-29 rather spoiled with them.
So remainded MiG-29 used oversea supply with unbelievable price.
India, Iraq, Libya, Syria and North Korea introduced.

MiG-29K Fulcrum-D
MiG-29K was developped for Russian Naval Aircraft-Carrier (which have not steam catapult) model in the late 1980s, as a competitor of Su-33, but MiG failed to get order.
Since 1992 to early 2000s , its development was continued . But, currently, Russian Government wish to save Mikoyan design bureau and its group companies which have
financial difficulty. So The Russian NAVY ordered 24 MiG-29Ks for carrier use in late 2009 for the Admiral Kuznetsov.
And Indian NAVY buy Admiral Gorshkov with quite low-price, which is re-built aircraft carrier from a cruiser, with an agreement to buy MiG-29K and MiG-21UK (double seat model).
I think this was a reason why the China bought Admiral Kuznetsov and Sukhoi Su-33 emotionally.
It could aerial refueling and attached "buddy" refuel system like U.S. NAVAL A-4/A-7. Upper extra Air-Intake removed and the wings are foldable and enlarged.
Air-dam slats are attached in streakes. Engines are power-upped, Arresting hook is attached and landing gears changed strong enough to landing aircraft carrier.
And Avionics and control system are grade-upped as a modern multirole fighter.

A lot of Mig-29 families were exported to eastern Europe and the third world. But they are short range, poor payload/avionics and high running costs.
So the Mig-35 project is '4+th generation enchanced Mig-29', to competitive with F-16 or Mirage 2000. Enlarged wings and vectored thrust nozzle engine enabled to more range and footwork. Avionics Rader changed Phazotron N019/N010 to Phazotron Zhuk AE AESA.

Sukhoi Su-7 proposed the competitor of F-100.
As these fighter of this era's common weak point was big consumption and less payloaded gas.
Su-7 had better arms and speed than F-100 except short range though sub tank fully attached.

So, when Su-22 appeared, western correspondanse thought that this as test machine.
But dare to say this is the way of Russia to made jet fighter.
Many parts could use from Su-7. Then russia get long ranged fighter/attacker with less cost.

Su-9/11 Fishpot
Sukoi Su-9 is larger All-Weather Intercepter. Almost 1000 Su-9 producted for Soviet Air Defence Forces and domestic Air bases.
Delta wings and Rader enclosed Shock-corn at nose air-intake is similar style as Mig-21.
That was TsAGI's favourite style at that era. Main target was U-2 and other invaders.
Rader radius was 20km and AAM radius was 10km. These enabled 'Stand-off' attack.
It have not good stability and have unrelyable engine. So it said that many accident ouured.

Su-15 is by any means in secret. Details or history could not know still now.

Su-24 Fencer
Su-24 Brings a lot of fear for NATO. Its payload and long foot.
It could easily attack western air base and strategic points.
It is true that Su-24 is much fear for Japan than MiG-21 or MiG-25.
It used similar as F-111, tactic class bomber.
Fortunately, Russia and China did not succeed to develop any aerial tanker.
But long ranged Su-24 is still danger for western world.

Su-25 Frogfoot
Su-25 is one of typical close support attacker like U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt.
It have been used on battle field. It could bring a lot of bombs or rockets for ground support.
Su-25 had been exported to many eastern world, North Korea, Iraq, Iran and Angola.
A lot of Su-25 losed in Afganistan conflict (or intervation) by surprise attack with compact SAM, after U.S supported Mujahedin.
Though Su-25 have thick "bathtub" titanium protection for cockpit, U.S "Stinger" could hit its engine easily.
So fire wall added between engines which protect to catch fire another one.
Su-25 have many variations, and still now, many upgrowth or improvements are in process.

Su-27 Flanker
It is a surprise that Su-27 is not simple nor conventional as a Russian fighter.
Su-27 and its variations are most successful fighter of Russia.
It have modern "fly-by-wire" system,over 240km ranged rader. many hard-points.
Since it have a large integral tank, no outside tank needed for usual operations.
Surprised are its foot work and controlability.
It moves acrobatically called "Cobra" and any free moves that U.S fighters could not.
It is a really heavy class champion to compare with F-15 Eagle.
F-15 still remains domination with its weapon system
Su-27 is much economic than F-15.
For a while, Su-27 and its variations remains the main stay of Russian Air Force.

Su-35 have 10 wings/canard/fins.
It genarate high lift and more flexible action for this plane.
Su-33 and Su-37 were prepaired as naval shipplane.
Su-35 was planned for air force multipurpose plane, attached digital fly-by-wire system and CRT display.
Each type have advanced weapon system, sensor and computer.
Pilots could controll easily this big and complicate plane and weapon.

Su-35BM (Su-35S) Super Flanker
Su-35BM is one of advanced Su-27, and much excellent than most of them. Carbon fiber parts used in main/tail wings, Al-41F1S TVC Turbo-fan engine make it quite
good footwork attached with Su-47 CCV technology and Fly-by-Wire systems. Front Canard are removed but TVC takes good maneuver.
Strake figure and some other proportions are shape-uped and Low RCS (Stealth) ability. It can super-sonic cruise.
IRST and Rader are upgraded. IRST attached Razer scanner, Rader have wide-ranged and 240 degrees of horizontal scanning which enable to use wide-band frequency which could effectable for F-22.

Russian first 5th genaration multirole combat fighter which will be successor of SU-27 series.
Production will be on time 2015 or so. Sukhoi study F-22 Raptor and willing more ability than this competitor.

In front of canopy, both side includes phased array rader which provides quite wider sight watch.
Trade-off of large fuel tank and stealth ability, weapons/armaments are rather poor than su-27.
But 6 hard-point could be attache under the wings.

Why the USSR needed such a big intercepter like Tu-28/128 ? One of reason that USSR had the biggest territory, and It is hard to have enough amount of SAM screen. Additional reason is the Siberia,
covered by tundra, refuse.to make air/rader base.
MiG-21 and Su-15 were used with Rader base, and have poor combat radius..
Then Tu-28 (Tu-128) was developped from the Tu-98, tactic class bomber.
Glass fibered nose replaced to big diameter rader. Even bomb tank used for fuel, combat radius was insufficient for order.
So Lightning like "piggy Pack" attached under the abdomen.
Then Tu-28 could get over 1000km combat radius and Stand-Alone Intercept ability.
And long range AAM "R-4" (Range 40km, NATO Name:"Ash") producted only for Tu-28/128.
After 200 Tu-28/128 built and in use, retired in 1992. Sukhoi Su-27 take over the mission.
