EMMUSICAL DIARY

てわけで Describe how your cultural process has operated over time in your overseas setting.

The process of Tourism Development (TD) has operated in Waikiki, Hawaii in three distinct phases over past 100 years which is outlined by Butler's life cycle model (see fig.1).

Hawaii first entered its pioneer phase in 1901 when Sheraton moana hotel was built on Waikiki beachfront. At this time, the region was covered by swamp which minimise its potential to become a popular tourist destination due to the lack of the land. To overcome this problem, Alawai canal was built as a drainage of the swamp in 1922 which increased land availability and also accessibility from Honolulu which was a gateway to Oahu island. More hotels were started to develop along the beachfront eg. Pink palace in dispersed pattern which shows its development as a tourist destination and around this time, recognition of attractions eg.tropical climate, surf beach started to increase. Marketing target was an affluent American domestic tourists because of the high cost of transport.

Mature phase began in 1950s when number of tourists started to increase rapidly due to the improvement tin aircraft with greater passenger capacity which contributed to provide cheaper air flights. Increased tourists demanded increased facilities which caused a cumulative causation and consequently, there was an intensive development of high-rise hotels eg. Ohana maria in a space of only 2km wide, 1km long between the beachfront and Alawai canal. Also diversification of attractions was happening around this time that tourist's preferences started to vary, therefore the industry are forced to supply new type of attractions to satisfy tourists. Natural phenomenon such as Diamond head volcanic cone was turned into tourist attraction to give tourists extra entertainment. By 1990, there were 5 million tourists visiting Hawaii annually and 200 high-rise hotels offering 39000 rooms.

TD in Waikiki reaches its saturation phase in 1990s when infrastructure was unable to cope with further increase in tourist number. Increased number of tourists was resulting in traffic congestion and degradation of marine environment on both Waikiki beach and peripherical destination such as Hanauma bay. Negative perception of Waikiki beach started to spread out globally which made competing and newer destinations eg. Tahiti to gain tourist's preferences. There needed to be some solutions to regain positive tourist's perception because the economy in Hawaii was hugely depended on tourism industry that 3 in 1 citizens on Oahu was employed in the industry. Attempts were made to improve facilities and attractions that the regulators has spend more than US$500mil on beach nourishment, upgrading CBD area eg. $11mil on improving Kalakaua Ave. Also agglomeration of retail started to be recognized as a shopping mecca which successfully attracting high spending Japanese tourists through facilities such as International Market Place, Royal Hawaiian shopping centre and DFS Galleria.

As a conclusion, it is obvious that Hawaii has experienced three phases in operation of TD which is driven by change in demands of increasing or decreasing number of tourists.
