　今日の日航機ニアミスは空中衝突寸前だったようですね。ニュースで知る限りでは、シートベルトをされていなかった乗客の方や、飲み物サービスをされていた乗員の方が天井に叩きつけられたりして、ひどい怪我をされたようです。
　10年近く前だと思いますが、シートベルトをしていなかった乗客の方が乱気流で怪我をしたというニュースを聞いて以来、私は機内で座っているときには、食事の時間も含め必ずシートベルトをするようにしています。もちろん、ある程度はゆるめていますが、自分でできる範囲の事ですから。
　今回のニアミスは改めてシートベルトの重要性を浮き彫りにしたと思います。シートベルトのサインが消えても、機内放送ではそのまま装着することをrecommendしますが、これからは国内線に限り着席時常時着用が義務付けられるかもしれませんね。
(1)as good as

(2)whack
Whack is a verb that means hit something in a way that makes a very large sound,kind of echoing move,reverberating kind of a sound.So being whacked or getting whacked is being attacked.

If you make something a rule,you make it a rule for yourself.You decide you're going to do something that way every time.
(4)hideaway
Hideaway is a small private place,usually somewhere you consider very comfortable for relaxing that other people don't know about.
(5)cardboard box
Cardboard boxes in English often means the kind of corrugated paper box.Sometimes we just call corrugated boxes,the heavier kind of cardboard that's used for packing.When I first came to Japan,I had a little trouble because cardboard is a kind of heavy paper really.But corrugated boxes is a different word in Japanese so for a long time I had no idea what to say.
(6)oust
If you're ousted,you're ejected or moved out or forced out of some place.
(7)rough sleeping
I think in the U.K. they tend to use the phrase,rough sleeping or sleeping rough,meaning sleeping in the parks or on the streets or in empty buildings.
(8)help
I think the kind of support they'll receive is more training kinds of support,how to look for a job, how to apply for a job and be successful in an interview.It might also teach them good work habits.If they've grown up even part of their lives homeless,they haven't had parents or other adults to serve as models of how to go to work every day and be on time and dress right.

　先日、インターネットで養子縁組をしたというちょっと信じられない事件がありましたが、ご記憶の方も多いと思います。

　私もニュースでちらっと見かけたのですが、ＴＶで当事者であるカリフォルニアの夫婦とイギリスの夫婦が、この双子の養子縁組についてかなりやりあっていました。
　私はその映像を見ながら、素朴な疑問として、インターネットで養子縁組をするほどU.S.ではadoptionが日常茶飯事で、かつ抵抗のないものなのかなあ、と思いました。そこでその疑問をアメリカ人の友人にぶつけてみました。
「インターネットで養子縁組なんて聞いたことないね。」
「でも、インターネットは極端としても、『adopter 求む』なんていうclassified adsがひょっとしてあるんじゃない？アメリカの新聞のclassified adsっていろいろなのが載ってるよね。」
「ううん、そんなのもないわよ、普通。」
「じゃあさ、『養子求む』っていうのはどうなの？」
「普通の新聞じゃ掲載しないね。ただsupposed not toというレベルかもしれないなあ。」
「養子縁組についての抵抗感はどうなの？よく子供がいても、外国から養子を迎え入れる人っているみたいだけど。」
「私見だけど、外国から養子を迎え入れることに積極的な理由は三つあるわね。個人的には反対だけど。一つ目はChristianityからの動機。その子供に他の宗教よりキリスト教を教えたいというもの。二つ目はその子供にcross-culturalな知識や経験を与えたいという動機。そして三つ目は、アメリカという国にある「チャンス」というものをその子供に与えようという動機。その国にいたら、住環境や社会的な限界から才能がスポイルされる、という風に考えるのかもしれないわね。」
　adoptionについてはいろいろ考えさせられますが、果たしてその子供にとってどれが最も幸せなのだろうと考えたとき、adopterに「正解」は導き出せないのかもしれないなあと感じます。
(1)be aware

(2)trash
Trashing here is the adjective form of the verb.Most of the time I think in English you hear the word trash as a noun,something to throw away or get rid of.When it's a verb,it means vandalize or destroy something or attack something.
(3)gang
Occasionally it's used in other situations too like a work gang,a group or team of people usually doing physical work.
(4)urban renovation
Urban renovation is the process of making old rundown or poor areas in a city new and fresh again.It's renewing bad neighborhoods.Sometimes urban renovation is called gentrification,which means upgrading it.It's often when middleclass people begin moving into lower class or poor neighborhoods.
(5)prettied-up neighborhood
A prettied-up neighborhood would be a neighborhood that's undergone gentrification or urban renovation.They make it look nicer.
(6)count
You don't count is a phrase that means you don't matter,you're not important.If we were counting up the important people,we wouldn't count you.
(7)lump together with
If you lump something together with something else,it means you don't really care about it,you just put it into the category because it's convenient.
(8)the other side of the coin
There's a phrase in English,there's two sides to every coin,meaning there's more than one way to understand the situation.If you look at it from the other side,it might look completely different.So Gene is saying that now that he is in the other category,he understands it differently.

　この日記で取り上げるＴＶ番組もかなり偏り？が出てきてますが、今日も情熱大陸を取り上げたいと思います。昨日は「オテル・ド・ミクニ」で有名な、三国清三さんでした。
　今回は、フランス料理界ではその名を知らぬ人はいない、とされる三国さんが、今回、スイスの有名ホテル「パラス」に招かれ、「三国フェア」を開催し、そのすばらしい料理で美食家たちを魅了したというお話でした。三国さんはインタビュアーから
「なぜ、有名な三国さんが、オテル・ド・ミクニよりも大変な環境の外国でフェアを開催されるのですか？」
と聞かれ、
「海外に来るのはね、自分の可能性を確認したいからですよ。自分はまだまだやれるってね。」
とお話されていました。その言葉を聞き、自分の現在に安住せず、もっと大きな目標に常にチャレンジし続ける気持ち、それが生き甲斐になるのかなと感じました。その一方で、現地の厨房のメンバーを
「三日あれば十分ですよ。自分のチームに仕立て上げるのに。」
と言い放つ自信、そしてその通りに実行してみせる実力、国際的に通用するというのはこういうことを言うんだ、というモデルのような仕事ぶりはすばらしいものがありました。
　三国さんはフランス語を流暢に使われていましたが、やはり語学というものは手段であって「主役」ではないというのがここでもはっきりとしています。自分は英語とつきあっていながら（と言っても、ここ１年以上すっかりサボっていますが）何をしたいのか、考えさせられる番組でした。
(1)How 'bout
Mickey says 'bout a sandwich instead of about clearly.This is a very common shortening in English because the first syllable is unstressed.The second syllable is mostly what's necessary to understand what she's saying.

The direct answer would be yes,please.I would like one.But this I don't mind if I do is a very common way to accept something that's been offered to you.
(3)lunch
I think the verb form of lunch sounds almost a little bit pretentious to many North American speakers.Sometimes they call women who come from wealthy families and that ladies who lunch.
(4)real nice people
You may have noticed he said real nice people instead of really nice people,which is actually the correct form.Many people speak this way,however.They only use the adjective form instead of the adverbial form.It's sometimes used with good,also.
(5)What do you do now?
A very common question to find out about someone's work.
(6)finished high school
This is a very common way to mention it,did you finish high school,things like that.
(7)make ends meet
When you make ends meet,you find a way somehow to live your life or carry out your life even though you don't really quite have enough money.
(8)unemployment check
And in the U.S. people talk about going on unemployment or cashing unemployment checks.Don't usually talk about unemployment insurance unless you have a private policy.
(9)hot
Things that are hot are strong and exciting.
(10)get by
I get by is a very common phrase for somehow I manage,which is another phrase you could use.I manage,I make do,I get by.
(11)day by day
Day by day is one of those phrases in English that mean little by little,one day at a time.He doesn't look forward far into the future planning a great time for himself.He lives one day at a time.
(12)loose community
I think a loose community means they probably recognize each other,talk to each other sometimes,maybe even help each other now and then,but they don't see each other all the time.They're not always managing each other.
(13)get beaten up
To be beaten up or get beaten up means somebody hits you with their hands or maybe some weapon,maybe they kick you.

　MLBのスプリングトレーニングは大きく分けてフロリダ州とアリゾナ州に集中します。Retireeの住民が集中する両州ですから、気候的な面では文句のつけようがないでしょう。分散の仕方はその地理的な条件からか、主としてホームが西海岸のチーム（ドジャースを除く）はアリゾナへ、その他のチームはフロリダへ行くようです。まあ、Ｄバックス、デビルレイズ、マーリンズは地元でやっているようなものなんでしょうけど。
　昨年行ったフェニックスは全米５位の都市だと言われますが、実際に行ってみると「え～、これでそんなに住んでるの？」と思うほどいわゆる「都市化」を感じることはできません。ＮＹや東京というよりはLAの方がイメージに近いのではないでしょうか。実際にはSun Cityや私がゴルフをしたスコッツデールなどを含めた、Metro Phoenix（首都圏、関西圏といった感じ）が一般にいうところの「フェニックス」ではないかと思います。
　今シーズンからイチローがプレーするマリナーズ、パドレスのキャンプ地、PeoriaはPhoenixからSun Cityに向かう途中（Pheonixから北西）にありますし、長谷川のいるエンゼルスはスコッツデールに向かう途中（Pheonixから東、Scottsdaleは北東）のTempe、更に少し東に行ったMesaでソーサのいるカブス、Scottsdaleではジャイアンツ、Pheonixではアスレチックスと、Metro PheonixにＭLBのスプリングトレーニングが集中しています。Pheonixを中心にとれば、十分車で楽に行き来できる距離で、オープン戦もしやすいですし、ファンにとっても非常に便利です。２月中旬以降、西海岸まで行かれることがあれば、ゴルフを兼ねてArizonaまで足をのばし、是非Cactus Leagueをご覧になられたらいかがでしょうか？（私は絶対無理なので。）

　コンビニの数が増え始めた頃はすごく便利になったものだなあと思いましたが、まだ不満な点がありました。それは、お酒を売っていないこと。それが最近では、コンビニでもスーパーでも売っていて楽になりました。特にスーパーでは、お酒の種類が充実していて、むしろ酒屋さん（といってもマインマートあたりですが）よりも欲しいお酒があったりします。（ZIMAなんかは特に売り切れてたりするので。）
　ところが規制緩和に逆行するような動きがあります。それは１月末の通常国会で立法が予定されているらしい「酒類販売管理法案」です。法案は「未成年者の飲酒を防ぐ」という名目で、お酒を販売するお店は税務署に登録した「酒類販売管理者」を置くことが義務づけされ、また、午後11時から午前５時までは「酒類販売管理者」がお店にいなくてはならなくなります。また、一定の研修や資格試験を受けなければ「管理者」にはなれないが、経過措置で既存の酒販店は事実上無試験で合格するようです。（なぜ「未成年者に販売しない」ために「試験」が必要なのか理解に苦しみます。）2003年９月までには受給調整が撤廃され、酒類販売が自由化されることが閣議決定されていましたが、明らかにそれに足かせをはめようとする動きとして、スーパー・コンビニは署名活動をおこない大反対していると日経流通は伝えています。
　更に日経流通によれば、酒類自販機の撤去はＦＣ協会加盟のコンビニでほぼ100％達成されているのに対し、酒類小売店でつくる酒販組合中央会では2000年５月までに自販機を撤廃することを決議したにもかかわらず、加盟店において2000年５月末で12万台弱の自販機が残り、５年前に比べ36％減ったに過ぎないそうです。（実際には自販機の売上げに頼っている小売店が多い中では、中央会も頭を悩ましているようです。）未成年者の飲酒を防ぐために対面販売する必要があるのなら、自販機は撤去すべきだというのが道理でしょう。
　酒類小売店が苦しい経営環境にあるのも何となく理解できますし、未成年が簡単に酒類を入手できる状態を避けなくてはならないのもわかります。でも多くの酒類小売店が自販機の売上げに頼っている中で、自販機の全廃ができなければ、コンビニの前に自販機がまた並ぶことになるでしょうし、スーパーではテナントでそのスーパー系の酒販店が入店すれば同じことです。徒に「酒類販売」を管理する「団体」をつくってコストをかけるよりは、深夜にお酒を購入する際はＩＤが必要なことにすればいいのでは？食材売り場からワインが消えてしまうようなことはできれば避けて欲しいです・・・。

　私もタバコは吸わないので、禁煙には大賛成なのですが、ここまでいくとどうなのかな？という記事がWeb版「The Economist」に掲載されていました。
「Don't ban smokers」

　記事の主旨は「不寛容」に対する疑問だと思いますが、記者はsmokerなのかな？とも感じました。記事によれば、メリーランド州モントゴメリーカウンティのFriendship Heightsという自治体で、あらゆる公共施設（道路・歩道・広場を含む）でタバコを吸うことを禁じたようです。
”Town officers courageously banned smoking on all public property, including streets, pavements and public squares.”
　これに対し、皮肉たっぷりにその禁止に至るロジックを批判し公共の場のルールは社会が決め、私有地は所有者が決めるのは確かに道理だとしています。
”It must be said, however, that doughty Friendship Heights has discovered an approach that liberals can embrace.Private property is its owners’ sanctuary, but the public rules in public spaces. Undeniably, the streets belong to the government; what happens in them, therefore, is the government’s business."
　しかしどう見ても今回の措置は行き過ぎであり、個人の自由を侵害していないか？こんなことが許されるなら、宗教ですら許されないじゃないか、と例にあげています。
”America has long and justly sought to prevent the entanglement of religion with public life. What people do in church or at home is their business. However, praying, sermonising or wearing religious garb in the streets surely compromises the requirement that the public weal not be dragooned into supporting religion.”
　最後に、そこまで権利を行使するのであれば、それに対する責任もしっかりとるべきだけど、本当にそんなことできるの？と結んでいます。
”If they intend to fulfil their responsibilities to the health and welfare of citizens, to public order, and above all to the public streets and parks whose rights the authorities are sworn to uphold, then the way ahead is clear.”
　不寛容の裏側にあるもの、それは、それだけ多くの摩擦が存在しているということでしょう。U.S.に限らず、ここ日本でも不寛容と無関心が増加しているのではないでしょうか。

　昨日に続き、今週の東京FM「メルセデスベンツ・スーパーコラム」のゲスト、和田秀樹さんのお話。和田さんはアメリカ留学中のエピソードを交え、アメリカ社会についてこんな見方をされています。
・アメリカ人は何かあるとすぐパーティを開く。だからパーティの数は非常に多いが、そこには恋人や奥さんを連れて行くことが普通。またその場で身内（恋人や奥さん）を褒める。日本人が身内のことを持ち上げるのをあまりしないのとは正反対。
・パーティの場ではちょっとしたジョークでも、male chauvinistやracistだととらえられかねない。その一方で、パーティでは愛想よくしなければならない部分もあるので、そのギャップのコントロールが難しい。
・そうした差別を表向きは慎み、例えばゲイに関しても寛容であるように見えるのに、一方では自分がゲイであると思われることを極端に恐れ、男二人で飲みに行ったりすることはほとんどない。そのため、パーティの二次会で男同士２，３人で飲みに行くということはないので、男同士で飲みに行くことに慣れきった日本人の私（和田さん）としては物足りなく思ったこともあった。
・このように、アメリカではなかなか本音を話すことができないせいか、精神分析医のところへ行って相談する人が多い。そこで自分の情けない部分や卑しい部分を吐露し、精神的な開放感を得ている。特に企業の経営者といった立場の人々もすすんで精神分析医のところへ行くため、従業員も精神分析医のカウンセリングを受けることに抵抗感がないし、また経営者が精神分析医のカウンセリングを受けていることで経営に対する安心感を得ている部分もある。
　最後に和田さんは「日本企業の経営者もすすんで精神分析医のカウンセリングを受けることが大切なのではないか。トップになればなるほど孤独なもの。」と結んでいました。以前私も「U.S.では精神分析医のところへ行くのは、歯医者に行くようなもの」と聞いたことがあります。最近では日本でもストレスクリニックの看板をよく見かけるようになりましたが、心（脳）も体の一部だとすれば早めのケアは必要でしょう。

Way ahead is a phrase that you can use in English to mean follow in the future like Araki does here.But you can also use it to mean follow in the front,physically for location.
(2)bark an order
This is kind of an interesting sentence.If a CEO barks an order,it means he gives an order in a loud,sharp kind of a voice,almost the kind of a sound that a dog makes when it's barking.
(3)sit back
And then after the CEO barks an order,Araki-san talks about sitting back.Sitting back usually means relaxing.If you're paying attention and working,you tend to sit up straight at attention,maybe even on the edge of your seat.If you sit back,you're relaxing.
(4)You've got something there.
You've got something there,is a phrase that's often used to say you're right.That's a good idea.That's an important point.
(5)keep the ball rolling
Don't let things stop.Make sure the action continues until you've reached your goal.
(6)stick to commitments
This time Ben mentions sticking to commitments.In the vignette on Wednesday,we heard delivering on commitments.This is pretty much the same thing,a little more not changing your commitments.
(7)commitment
I think in English promise is a verbal kind of a thing.And I think commitments sound deeper,maybe even beyond words.

　今週の東京ＦＭ「メルセデスベンツスーパーコラム」（中探の後聴くのがこれ。通勤時に聴く最後の番組。）のゲストは心理学者の和田秀樹さん。彼によれば、若者の「表面上」の画一化は以前にも増して進んでいるそうです。それを端的に示すのがＣＤの売上げ枚数だそうで、'80年代にミリオンセラーになったＣＤ（レコード）はわずか８枚にしかすぎず、しかもその半数は演歌なのだそうです。一方'90年代に入り不景気になったにもかかわらず、各年、一年間に若者が好むアーティストのＣＤが何枚もミリオンセラーとなっていて、この現象を和田さんは「若者が表面的な部分をより他人と共通に持とうとする」ことの結果だと分析されていました。また、そのミリオンセラーになる各アーティストには音楽的、またファッション的に共通するものが見られず、「今、流行りだから」という理由で売れているのではないか、趣向のの連続性が遮断されているのではないか、とも話されていました。和田さんは「俺達の頃は陽水が好きな奴は、拓郎は聴かないよ、っていうものがあったんだけどね。」と昔を振り返り、本音を自分の内に包み隠して表面的な部分で他人と共有することで安心感を持とうとする（と氏は思っている）若者を心配していました。
　私が若かった頃も、そうした「流行り」がなかったわけではありません。でも和田さんがおっしゃられる通り、以前より「ヒット曲」や「人気アーティスト」のサイクルが短くなったことは確かで、ちょっとでもメディアから離れるとあっという間に名前も聞いたこともないようなアーティストが人気になっていることはよくあることです。これは和田さんの分析に加え、世の中自体のスピードが加速度的に増していることも原因なのではないかと感じます。

If you push the button and zap something,it sounds like you're using electricity to make something happen.In slung in the U.S.,people call microwave ovens zappers.It uses electricity to get a result.It can mean microwave oven.As a verb,it can mean prepare your food in the microwave oven like,oh,I don't have any time and zap some dinner.
(5)under heavy fire
If you're under heavy fire,you're being criticized or attacked.
(6)store
In the U.S.,people tend to use the word store instead of shop when they're talking about a place to buy consumer goods.
(7)thin the ranks
Thin the ranks is a phrase often used to mean get rid of some people.Ranks comes from the military meaning the regular soldiers.So if you thin the ranks,you get rid of some other people.
(8)crawl up the walls
If you're crawling up the walls,you're frustrated,you're going crazy,you can't be calm and quiet because you're so impatient.
(9)deliver on one's commitments
You can fulfill your commitments or you can deliver on your commitments.

　もう何年も通勤途中にニッポン放送の「おはよう中年探偵団」を聴いていますが、途中で挿まれるＣＭのスポンサーは様変わりしました。私が聴く時間帯は７：５０くらいから８：１５くらいまでで、今の放送ですとモーニングジャーナルからお便り日本晴れ、ハッピーリクエストあたりでしょうか。だいたいこの時間は昔、日産自動車がスポンサーで、ずっと日産のＣＭが流れ、合間に日本自動車工業会からの「シートベルト着用」キャンペーンなどがあったくらいで、お便り日本晴れの後（ハッピーリクエストの時間、以前何を放送していたか思い出せないのですが）くらいになってやっとトヨタ東京カローラや三菱自動車のＣＭが流れたものでした。（カミパレスなんかもスポンサーでしたねー。）今ではその時間帯にフランスモーターズ（これは日産？）やカルピスのアミールＳ、ネッツ神奈川などのＣＭが流れ、こんなところにも日産の不振を垣間見ることができます。
　それにしても小口アナはすっかり板についた感じですね。以前は石川みゆきアナの街角インフォメーション（でしたっけ？）を楽しみにしていたものですが、小口アナに替わって（正確には交替する前ですが）そうした流行りものをレポートするコーナーがなくなってしまいました。ぜひ小口アナで街角インフォメーションを復活してほしいものです。
(1)pretext
A pretext is a reason and it's the reason used for some purpose.But it's not always the main reason for why you have your purpose.Maybe you don't like someone.So you try to find something wrong that they've done so you can get rid of them.That thing that they've done wrong is the pretext.
(2)what goes around comes around
Renoir is talking about Ted Begley's bad behavior and how it came back to do bad things to him.
(3)guillotine
You might have noticed that Renoir said g[i;]llotine,instead of guillot[i;]n.I think her pronunciation is closer to the original French.And in English you can use either one.
(4)reign of terror
I think the guillotine and the reign of terror both come from around the same time in France.
(5)prop
Renoir also calls the guillotine a prop.A prop is something that you use in a play on stage.Of course,the actors are the focus of what happens on a stage,but things that they use are called props.
(6)get his head cut off
There's got his head cut off.I think it's following from the guillotine metaphor that Renoir started using.He probably just lost his job.
(7)fend off
If you fend something off,you keep it off,you avoid it,you stop it from coming close to you and affecting you.
(8)Lady Luck
Lady Luck is a phrase people often use just to mean luck.They personify luck.
(9)bail someone out
If you bail someone out,it means you get them out of jail.If they haven't done anything really serious,usually you can pay some money to guarantee that they'll go back to court when their case comes up.That's bailing someone out.It's also used just to mean helping someone when they really need it.Also bail alone as a verb means get the water out of a sinking boat.You use a bucket and throw the water out back into the lake or the ocean.That's also called bail.

　先日旅行会社大手である、近畿日本ツーリストと日本旅行が合併に合意したというニュースが流れました。近ツーと日旅は業界２位、３位の大手ではありますが、ITを利用したチケットの手配や自由旅行の増加など、今後の消費者の旅行会社離れを考えれば早期に対策を打つ必要があったことは確かでしょう。
　企業再編の動きの中では、企業結合の三つのトレンドがあり、それは
①メガマージャー
②ヴァーチャルコーポレーション
③新形態の垂直統合
であると思われます。近ツーと日旅は①のメガマージャーに分類されますが、やはり念頭には合併による固定費の削減があるでしょう。
　こうした企業結合は、銀行の救済能力の低下が影響しているのではないでしょうか？自己査定のしばりの中で、取引先の種類を健全・要注意・破綻懸念・実質破綻に区分し、それぞれに応じて引当計上をしていくことが以前に増して必要性が高くなっている中では、状況が悪化した企業の救済（追加融資）に関して厳しい結論を出さざるを得なくなっているでしょう。結局、企業を救えるのは企業しかない上で、企業結合の増加がみられると思われます。

That one looks at how the Third Reich in Germany became powerful and lost the power.I think decline and fall is used in English a lot,because there's a history book called the Decline and fall of the Roman Empire.The writer,Edward Gibbon,who was British.This book is from the 1780s, I think.He was in Rome looking at the ruins and got the idea to write about how such a great empire managed to disappear.And so he was focusing on the downfall of the Roman Empire.And nowadays in English people use this a lot to talk about someone or something that have been very great.It's often hard to understand why they don't continue.

Sometimes in English when you talk about the leader or the strong leader,you can call them the top dog.It doesn't just mean boss or leader.It sounds like a tough and strong commanding leader.

Something that's in ashes has burnt and died.It's completely destroyed.The former form even of whatever you're talking about has disappeared.

If you take the helm,you take charge or take control.The helm is where the captain stays on a ship to guide it in the right direction.

Bounced out means fired.There's a couple of other phrases with out,a couple of other verbs with out that you can use,pushed out,forced out,words like that.All mean fired.

A golden parachute is the set,the package of retirement perks or retirement benefits that many high-level executives get when they leave the company no matter what their work record was.

A hotshot is somebody with a good ability,high skills,who likes to show them off.

Something that's been shot to shreds has been ruined.If you think of taking a gun and shooting at something,a kind of target practice,for example,you make a lot of holes in the target and it just gets ripped up.It gets torn to shreds.

Here Ben uses the phrase do someone in to talk about ruining his chances,to talk about firing him,getting rid of him.If you do someone in in other circumstances,it could mean you've killed them.

Vibes is the word that I think became fairly popular in the '60s probably,meaning atmosphere or feelings.It comes from vibrations .

　今日の「情熱大陸」はイチロー選手の特集でした。イチロー選手のMLBに対する夢や前向きな気持ちが語られる中で、イチロー選手自身が持っているであろう、一抹の不安もブラウン管を通して感じられました。
　今回のMLB挑戦においては、ポスティングの結果ではあれ、シアトルにチームが決まったことへの「安堵感」がイチロー選手自身にあったのではないでしょうか？オーナー、コミュニティ、キャンプへの参加経験、そして佐々木投手といった面で、シアトル以上にプレーしやすいところはなかったように思います。また奥さんも当初メディアでは英語が話せるといった情報がありましたが、実際のところそれほど流暢ではないらしく、そうした不安も考えれば、他の都市に比べシアトルはプレーに集中できる場所であることでしょう。
　結局中日でプレーすることが決まった川崎投手も、メジャーに関しては「日本人コミュニティがあるところ」とプレーに集中できる環境を望んでいました。最終的には家族のことを考えて国内移籍という結論を出した、と伝えられていますが、ボストンやフィラデルフィア、クリーブランドでなく、SFやSDなどのウェストコーストのチームだったら行ったかもしれないですね。

　皆さんの中でも、シンガポールへ行ったことがある、という方は多いことでしょう。観光目的の方も多いでしょうが、ビジネスでよく行かれる方も他国と比較して多い方ではないかと思います。
　かく言う私も一度だけですが行ったことがあります。ロータリークラブ関係で行きましたので、現地の若手ビジネスマンや企業経営者の子息といった方々とお話する機会がありましたが、総じて明るく気さくな感じの方が多かったと記憶しています。街角では「ここは日本か？」と思えるほど、日本のゼネコンのマークを見かけましたが、最近ではどうなっているのでしょうか？
　シンガポールにおける行政語は英語なので、現地の人との会話は英語でしたが、交流した若い人はともかく、街中で聞く英語はいわゆる「シングリッシュ」で、聞き取りが困難な場合もありました。シンガポールでは、この行政語の英語化によって、ソフト面での「インフラ整備」をおこない、外国企業の活動促進をすすめています。日経ビジネスによれば、シンガポールは世界コンテナ荷役の約９％を占め、扱い量で世界トップだそうです。
　その日経ビジネスにシンガポール首相のゴーチョクトン氏のインタビューが載っていました。ゴー首相の言葉には日本に対する期待が端々に感じられます。日本の役割を問われて首相は、
「将来を見渡して、日本がアジアの中の米国のような存在、つまり人やモノを積極的に受け入れる国になろうとするのなら、ますは日本の中で勉強したり働いたりして、長いこと日本に住むアジア人がもっとたくさんいていい。日本の大学を出ました、というアジア人がたくさん現れた時、私は日本の役割が大きくなったと思うだろう。その時日本は経済だけでなく、社会・文化でもアジアと緊密につながるし、日本を知るアジア人が増えていることだろうから。」
と答えています。この言葉を聞いて、アメリカの大学（院）に留学したり、アメリカで働く日本人の数を思うとき、同じことが日米でも当てはまるなと感じます。アメリカでの体験がその文化や考え方の理解度を上げることに寄与していることは間違いがないでしょう。
　もっと日本を理解してもらうためには、まず経済的な繁栄が必要であると思います。それがなければ、諸外国からの興味も途絶え「用のない国」になり、海外への影響度も下がってしまいます。それと同時に海外での「日本語教育」というものをもっと展開してみてもいいのではないでしょうか。それとアジア人を受け入れる用意のある大学などは、授業を英語でおこなうことも必要でしょう。「日本の役割」を考えたとき、「やるべきこと」は非常にたくさんあると感じます。

　職場のコンピューターでインターネットにアクセスできる、U.S.の事務員が仕事と関係ないサイトを利用しておこなっていることの上位は以下の通りだそうです。
①ニュースを読む　72％
②旅行の手配をする　45％
③商品を購入する 40％
④転職先を探す　37％
なんと言っても注目されるのは、４位の「転職先を探す」ですね。転職することにあまり抵抗がない（？）文化ならではのことだと思いますが、37％というのはかなりな数字ですね。
　日本でもHPに「求人情報」といったボタンがついている企業をよく見かけます。新卒は別として、実際にどれくらいアクセスがあるものなのでしょうか？実際にクリックしたことはありませんが、資格などの条件を見れば今どういった人材が求められているかがわかってくると思います。こうした「市場」が本格化するためには、転職や転社をすることがむしろキャリアアップにつながる例が多く出てこないとなかなか難しいと思いますし、日本人のメンタリティからいってそういうsituationになること自体がなかなか考えにくいと感じます。

　その動向が常に注目されているU.S.の景気ですが、最近では一部の大手小売業の出店ペースに陰りが見えているようです。
　日経流通によると、日本でもすっかり定着した感のある「GAP」の総売り場面積の増加率は、約30％（2000年度）から20％以下（2001年度）に下がる見通し、「オフィスデポ」は70店舗を閉鎖（出店は50店舗）するそうです。DSでは「Kマート」が72店舗の閉鎖（出店は50店舗）をして総店舗数を減らす計画のようです。一方、そのDS・大型店業界では「ウォルマート」「ホームデポ」「ターゲット」など積極的に出店する企業も多く、極端な例では１日で24店舗の開店（ターゲット）などもあります。
　これには米国景気の影響もあるでしょうが、企業間の格差もその原因でしょう。それとGAPなどは2000年末で3,700店が存在し、物理的な面で大量出店に歯止めがかかっているのかもしれません。業界的にはDS・大型店の例に見られるようにまだまだ各企業の出店意欲が高いようで、特にウォルマートは従来のDSと大型食品スーパーを組み合わせたり、ホールセール業態の強化もはかるなど、新しい試みにチャレンジしています。
　日本では話題を呼んだカルフールが幕張店の混乱を教訓に、南町田店ではプレオープン（新規オープンのとき大規模なチラシをうたずにひっそりとオープン、近隣の住民のみを集客する。店舗のオペレーションのチェック、混雑緩和が主な目的。）をしてからグランドオープンをするなど、徐々に日本にあわせたオペレーションをし始めているようです。
　好調なU.S.の景気に支えられた積極的な出店意欲、景気停滞の日本における出店意欲に共通するものは、やはり各企業の財務体質や業績なんですね。世界をマーケットにしたウォルマートやカルフールにとって、好景気時に比べ安いコストで出店できる今の日本はさぞいいマーケットなんだろうなあと感じます。

　昨日の日記で「格付」について書きましたが、偶然にも今日の日経新聞で新BIS規制案が取り上げられ、「格付」がクローズアップされていました。
　BIS規制については以前、この日記で取り上げましたが、'88にバーゼルで国際決済銀行（BIS）が定めたもので、国際間決済をする先進国の銀行の経営健全性を保持するため、万一の倒産に備えて、融資に対しての自己資本額の比率をある一定以上の水準（８％）確保するよう規制をしたものです。
自己資本比率（８％以上）＝自己資本／リスクウェートによる加重総資産（ただしここでのリスクウェートはカテゴリー別、後述）
　今回の新BIS規制案ではこれに加え、貸出先の格付けなどの信用度に応じて、自己資本比率算出時のリスクウエートを変化させるというものです。今までは企業向けの融資については、リスクウェートを一律100％とみなしていました（ただし、カテゴリー別のリスクウェートは以前から存在；例自国中央銀行への預け金は０％、個人向け住宅ローンは50％など）が、例えばS＆Pの格付けがAAAであった場合、リスクウェートは20％に下がり、一方B-未満であった場合は150％となります。簡単に言えば、自己資本比率を求める式において、優良企業への貸付の場合は分母が縮小するため低い自己資本額で済み、リスクの高い企業向けの貸付では分母が拡大するので自己資本を充実させなくてはならないということになります。（従前から100％なのだから緩和措置であるという見方もありますが。）
　日経では「（自己資本額が変わらないとすれば）優良企業への貸付が100％から20％へ下がるので、80％相当分を信用度の低い企業向けに使うことができる。」と書いていますが、実際AAAなどの高い格付けを持つ一流企業ではその格付を利用して直接金融によって資金を調達し、銀行を相手にしない（失礼！）といった要素もあるわけで、必ずしもその通りになるかは疑問です。しかし、理屈では以前のように優良企業でもリスクの高い企業でも一律８％とされていた時よりは銀行資産の劣化に歯止めがかかるかもしれません。（一律８％であれば、高ROEを確保するためにより高リスクな貸出に傾斜する傾向。資本額が同じならより高い収益率。）
　いずれにしても不況にあえぐ企業にとっては、銀行との関係がより厳しくなる要素であるとは言えるでしょう。日本の金融当局では、不動産担保によるリスク削減（内部格付法による）や中小企業向けについての配慮などを主張しているようで、これらの点が最終案に盛り込まれるかどうかは予断を許しません。

　昨年９月、ムーディーズが、日本の国債の格付けをAa1から１ノッチ下げ、Aa2に格下げしたのは記憶に新しいところですが、今日は少し格付について書いてみようと思います。「格付」とは、国家や企業が発行する債券（企業なら社債・CP等）が約定通りに元本および利息の支払われる確実性の程度を、利害関係のない第三者が判断し、その結果を簡潔な記号で表示し、投資家あてに提供される情報です。日本では'87に適格格付機関として、海外３社（ムーディーズ、S&P、フィッチ社）と日本公社債研究所、日本格付研究所、日本インベスターズサービスの６社が認可を受けています。（日本公社債研究所と日本インベスターズサービスは'98に合併、日本格付投資情報センターとなる。）
　企業の格付で言えば、キャッシュフローを生み出す力と負債の水準で決まると言って差し支えないと思われます。一般的には以下のような財務データが格付で重視されるとされます。（代表的なもの）
A．規模データ
①キャッシュフロー＝当期利益＋減価償却費－配当金および役員賞与
②EBITDA（Earning Before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortization)＝営業利益（＋受取利息・配当金の場合も）＋非資金費用（減価償却費等）

　先ほど書いたように、格付そのものはマーケットのものさしとして利用されているわけですが、企業内においてこの格付自体や格付判断データが経営目標に掲げられたり、IR活動に利用され、また、対外的にも銀行借入や商取引にも影響することが多くなっているようです。つまり「格付」を使う目的や領域が広がっていると言えるでしょう。

　日本における商習慣は、はたしてネット上のB２Bを利用することとマッチしているのでしょうか？日本の代表的な商習慣には、次のようなものが挙げられると思います。
①信用を大事にする－人、商品、情報に対する信頼感があるか？
②ネット環境の遅れ、ネット利用に対する考え方－ネット上決済方法整備の遅れ、セキュリティに対する不安
③リスクに対する考え方－販売側の責任を徹底追及、問題発生時に相手が見えないことへの不安
こうし一つ一つの商習慣は、ネットをビジネス上で利用する動機と反しているものばかりのように映ります。これが海外サプライヤーからすれば、「見積もりを請求してきても本当にビジネスをする気があるのかわからない。」「企画書や提案書のための見積もり提出では非効率」「誰が決定者でいつ結論が出るのかが見えない。」といった印象を持つ要因になっているようです。
　だからと言って私は日本の商習慣がいけないとは思ってはいません。信用がおけるサプライヤーから調達することはリスク管理の点から当然のことですし、製品のエラー率も重要です。私が思うのは、こうした日本の商習慣を守りながら、低コストを実現するB２Bサイトの利用環境が整っていないのではないか、ということです。注文を出した会社が実在するのか、品質や納期は守られるのか、支払いにおける不安はないのか、といった点について信頼のおける第三者的な機関が存在すれば、比較的B２Bサイトも利用しやすいと思います。
　そうした事業は各企業において既に目をつけており、サイトを立ち上げているようです。例えば検品・検査サービスでは、SGSグループなどはレイティングサービスをおこなっています。こうしたサプライヤーとバイヤーを結び、日本の商習慣とB2B環境の「つなぎ」をするサービスは今後とも成長していく可能性が高いでしょう。情報収集の効率化はITの最も得意とするところですし。

　選手がMLBに流出することが止まらない、日本のプロ野球の将来について、「プロ野球ニュース」内で豊田さん、江本さん、マーティ・キーナートさんが話をされていました。
キーナートさんは
・日本のプロ野球では、そのビジネスにおいて野球に全く携わってこなかった人が多すぎる。野球をやる環境について理解できている人が少ない。そういうところでプレーしたくない選手も多いだろう。
・日本では野球だけでなくスポーツ自体が市民レベルで文化として根付いていない。結局それを支えているのは「企業」なので、その企業が儲からなくなったらそのスポーツを金銭的にサポートするものがなくなってしまう。
・（例えば学者でも）日本だけの賞より、ノーベル賞を獲りたいと思うでしょう。プロ野球でもそれは同じこと。
と言ってました。
　確かにキーナートさんが言うように、日本のスポーツは企業（親会社）の出資によって支えられてきて、今、不況の影響で日本のスポーツ界に危機が訪れていることは確かではないでしょうか。野球に限らず、ラグビー、バレーボールなどでも以前の名門チームが会社の業績不振を理由に廃部に追い込まれています。Ｊリーグでもベルマーレ平塚（現湘南）がメイン出資者のフジタの経営不振で大幅にチーム予算が削減され、昨年はＪ２で昇格争いにも絡むことができませんでした。
　そうは言うものの、実際にスポーツが市民の文化として根付くのはまだまだ時間が必要だと思います。Ｊリーグがそのいいきっかけになってくれるといいのですが。

　センバツ高校野球の選考基準が変わり、地区大会でベスト８や４に入らなくても、いわゆる「一芸」で出場できることになったようです。
　個人的には最近ほとんど高校野球には興味がなく、特に春の選抜はテレビでも全く見ないと言ってもいいほどなのですが、今回のこの選考方法は一般に興味を沸かせるにはいいことかもしれませんね。
　でも、建前上は「教育」であっても、基本的には「勝負」の世界である甲子園に、何か他の「意思」が加わったようで、釈然としないなあと感じます。甲子園に出る、ということは確かに高校球児の夢ではありますが、その予選で敗れても精一杯やったという気持ちがどこかにあれば、出場できなくてもそれはそれで納得しようと気持ちを持っていくものだと思います。高校で野球をやる「意味」というものは部員それぞれが持っているもので、好きでやっている人間に勝敗と別のところで「甲子園」という舞台を突然プレゼントしても意味はないし、その「思惑」は「甲子園」を全てとして努力している球児に失礼ではないでしょうか。

　エコノミークラス症候群は最近話題になることが多いのですが、先のシドニー五輪に帯同したイギリスのオリンピックチームのコーチ三人が飛行機の狭い座席に長時間座ることで、このエコノミークラス症候群に罹っていたそうです。その内の一人は身長が192cmもあり、また飛行時間も23時間にわたったとか。
　私もエコノミー席しか座ったことがありませんが、あの狭さには閉口しますね。特に５人掛けのシートの真ん中で、かつ満席だったりしたら悲惨です。しかも身長が192ｃｍもあったら・・・。それと飛行時間ですが、23時間は辛いですね。私も欧州へデリー経由で行ったことがあり、デリーでも機内待機だったので、20時間ほど飛行機の中に缶詰でしたが、本当にきつかったです。
　根本的には飛行機の速度をもっと速くしてもらうしかないのでしょうが、ビジネスクラスで行けばそれでもいくらか解決するのでしょう。とりあえずできることは、マイレージを貯めることか？でもそのためには飛行機（もちろんエコノミー）に乗らなきゃですもんねー。

　日経平均の低迷が続いています。昨日の日記にも書きましたが、会計ビッグバンの影響は大きく、景気回復に向けてまだまだ明るい要素は見えてきません。
①上場株式需給関係
持ち合い株の解消はまだまだ終わったとは言えない。－まだ３兆円しか解消されていない。全体では40兆円の持ち合い株が存在。
②企業の利益と家庭の可処分所得のミスマッチ
企業の利益が消費の拡大に結びついていない。－企業がキャッシュフロー経営を重視。企業の利益は設備投資ならびに賃金の圧縮によってもたらされ、キャッシュは有利子負債の圧縮に回されている。
③成長力のあるビジネスの絶対的不足
U.S.ではネットバブルが興り、その収束方法が問題となっているほど、IT関連企業が成長した。日本では産業界自身が成長プロジェクト開発に成功せず、あまりにも政府の消費インセンティブ政策に頼る結果となった。
　以上三つ挙げたのが、私が個人的に思う景気・株価低迷の理由です。もういろいろなところで言い尽くされていることだと思いますが、全国的なインターネット常時接続環境の整備など、IT関連インフラ整備はきわめて迅速に対応すべきだと思います。ハイコンテクスト文化(基本的に共有している価値観、文化的背景が多い。)は日本の特長であり、その優位性を利用しない手はありません。その特長と全国的なIT環境整備はまさに日本にマッチした政策だと思います。ただし、今までのように「通行料金」で一部の企業(通信会社)が利益をできるだけ取ろうという発想ができる環境を残したままでは、景気浮揚は望むべくもないでしょう。

Morbid is really closely related to disease or something that's diseased although I think English speakers often use it related to death and dying equally.

Upbeat is a word often used to talk about people who are happy.I think it comes from music and a kind of rhythm that makes people want to dance and feel good.

　昨日の日経で、会計ビッグバンを取り上げた記事が掲載されていました。主な会計制度の変更について非常に理解しやすく書いてあった好記事だと思います。結論ではこの会計基準の変更に伴う影響（ほとんどがマイナス材料）に耐え得る体力があるかないかによって、21世紀に生き残れるかどうかが決まってくる、と結んでいます。
　それでは日経に書いてあった項目が実際にどういう影響を与えるか見てみましょう。(なお、細かい算出方法等はここでふれるスペースがないので、実際とは異なる部分があります。イメージ程度に・・・）
2000年３月期
①連結の範囲に実質支配力基準を導入→連結対象会社が増加。子会社に損失を押しつけられなくなる。
②連結キャッシュフロー計算書の導入→「勘定あって銭足らず」が許されなくなる。増収増益路線を有利子負債の増加のみによって支えることに対して見方が厳しくなる。投資に対しての回収の早期化。
③税効果会計を義務化→税法会計と制度会計の調和→有税処理項目（リストラ含む）についての検討が易化。
2001年３月期
①退職給付会計の導入→今まで計上されていなかった約６割強※の退職金関係費用を計上しなくてはならなくなり、莫大な経費によって税前利益が悪化。（※税法限度額－経費のうち税金計算上、経費として認められる額－は以前の要支給額の40％からどんどん下がっていますし、年金分もありますので正確ではありません。）
②金融商品会計の導入→株式、ゴルフ会員権、貸付金などの金融商品の評価損が表面化。所有有価証券等の評価下落が企業会計に影響。
③販売用不動産の含み損処理の厳格化→バブルに仕入れて塩漬けになっている土地などの地価下落が企業会計に影響。
2002年３月期
持ち合い株式の時価評価→株式の含み益に依存できなくなる。
2003年３月期（見通し）
固定資産の減損会計の導入→賃貸ビルの評価損も表面化。
　一言で言えば「えらいこっちゃ。」ということになりますね。ここで以上に挙げたような項目についての「含み損」に耐える「体力」が必要なことは言うまでもありませんが、もう一つ言えることは、今後の事業に於いても含み損が発生するようなおそれのある事業を抱える企業は常に大きなリスクと隣り合わせにあるということです。そして今後の成長分野を確実なものとしていく必要もあるでしょう。この会計ビッグバンによって、企業経営の透明性が高まったことは確実で、これをいいきっかけにできるかどうかが今後の企業の運命を左右しそうです。
(1)comfy

Hospice is kind of an interesting word,I think.It's used now in the U.S. for the special kind of an alternative care place.But originally it meant something almost like a hotel,some kind of lodging for travelers or for poor people,and they tended to be set up by religious orders or religious groups.Even now you can find them all over Europe.My dictionary said host is also related to this set.
(4)on hand
When people are on hand, they're available,they're ready to help or be there.When you're talking about things,it can also mean in stock.
(5)staffer
Araki uses the word staffers.It's kind of interesting.When I'm working,sometimes I hear Japanese people say we hired the staff.But they say that when they mean one person.Actually a staff is a group of people,so if you're hiring only one person or if you're referring to the people in a staff,they're called staffers.
(6)hospital and nursing home
I think hospitals and nursing homes tend to focus on the medical or technical side of patient care.And hospices focus on the human side.
(7)be divided
I find this sentence kind of interesting, too.If you think of it literally,it sounds like doctors are split in half,you know,each one.But,of course,it refers to them having different opinions.They're divided into different opinion groups.

　サラリーマンの代名詞であるようなスーツですが、考えてみれば、一週間のほとんどをスーツ姿ですごしているんですね。U.S.では職場での服装のカジュアル化がすすんでいるようですから、誰も彼もがスーツ姿で過ごしているわけではなく、日本のこのスーツ姿の多さは異常なのかもしれません。
　アパレル・繊維業界では、各々の企業が自社製品にブランド名をつけたり、ライセンス生産をしていることが多いわけですが、代表的なところは皆さんご存知のことでしょう。例えば
バーバリー、ポール・スチュアート－三陽商会
アクアスキュータム、J・クルー－レナウン
ニューヨーカー－ダイドーリミテッド（大同毛織）
といったライセンス系が挙げられますし、流通系のPBでは、丸井のVISARUNOはオンワード樫山とダーバンで作っていると聞いています。そう言えば、私が高校生の頃の話なので今はどうかわかりませんが、J-PRESSもオンワードだと聞きました。
　最近はオーダーやセミオーダーでかなり安く作ってくれる（まあ、生地にもよるでしょうけど）お店も増えているようですので、既製品では体型にしっくりこない、という方は一度問い合わせてみるのもいいかもしれませんね。私も既製服ではスーツ上下のサイズがワンサイズ違うので、どうしてもズボンのウェイストを大幅に詰めることになってしまいます。既製品は詰めることを前提にしているとは言っても、やはり最初から体型に合わせて作った方がシルエットもきれいになるでしょう。またそもそも、既製品ではデザインと生地のマッチング、肩のライン（ストレートショルダー、スクエアショルダーかドロップショルダー）が気に入らないことも多いですし、ディテールでもセッパ（ジャケットの袖のところに切り込みが入っている）や力釦（ジャケットの釦の後ろに小さな釦を付けて補強）などのチョイスができないということがあります。
　私は水呑サラリーマンですので、そうそうスーツを買い換えることはできません。ですので、スーツを購入するときは、飽きのこないしっかりしたスーツを選びたいなと思っています。そのためには少しこちら側もスーツについては勉強していった方がいいですね。

Euthanasia is a word I first came across in probably junior high school.It's a very common topic for a classroom debate practice.Probably most kids in the U.S. debate this a couple of times a year in school.The word comes from Greek and means easy death,according to my dictionary.
(3)if it were legalized
There's an interesting grammar point at the end of this sentence.You've probably studied it.But I think it's very difficult for second-language learners to pick up.This isn't only English.The same thing happened to me learning German,even though in this area German and English are fairly similar.If it were legalized,by changing from the simple present to this conditional tense,you indicate that what you're talking about is not true but you can think about it.
(4)physician
In this vignette,people have been saying doctor and physician.In English,they're mostly interchangeable.Physician sounds maybe a little more formal.I think doctor is more of an Anglo-Saxon word.And words that came in from other languages in English often sound more sophisticated.But physician technically is a person skilled in the art of healing,a medical-type doctor.A doctor,on the other hand,can be anyone who's very learned,who knows a lot and has studied a lot.
(5)play God
If you play God,you take charge of and make decisions on other people's fate.
(6)sue
It's fairly common in the U.S. to sue doctors if patients feel the doctors haven't carried out their duties correctly.
(7)first and foremost
First and foremost is kind of an interesting phase.It's doubled,so it intensifies the meaning of first or the meaning of priority.But actually first is often used for time, and foremost is often used spatially.
(8)morphine
Only two syllables.
(9)administer
I think the main difference between them.They're fairly interchangeable,but dispense sounds more like hand it out to someone and then they administer it to themselves,whereas administer a drug,I think a doctor would actually put the drug into your body.

　各地の成人式において新成人の態度の悪さが報道されていました。報道された、高松市や高知市、それに深谷市といった地域以外でも問題があったのかもしれません。
　もう何年も前のことになりますが、私は成人式には出席しませんでした。というのも大学の後期試験が確か１月の中旬にはあり、実際に成人式の日が試験日ではなかったように思いますが、まあ正月に皆とは会ったし、いちいち行くのも面倒だということでパスしました。
　ニュースを見た感想はそれぞれにあると思いますが、特に残念なのは高松市でものです。祝辞を述べている市長の横に手話通訳者がいて、彼女にもクラッカーが当たっていたようです。手話通訳者がいた、ということは会場内の新成人の中に耳の不自由な方がいらっしゃった可能性が高いと思われます。彼、もしくは彼女がハンディキャップをこれまで負ってきて、晴れてこの日成人式に出席していた結果がこれだとしたら、非常に残念です。

Sometimes instead of including the word condition,people just say she's terminal.But that sounds stronger and more direct.I think terminal condition,adding condition softens the message a little bit even though it's the same meaning.

Dispense is a word that's often closely related to doctors and health care.It means give out or deal out in portions,so giving people a small part of one whole.It's often used with medicine.There's another related word dispensary,which is the place where things are dispensed.But the usual use of dispensary is a doctor's office or dentist's office.
(8)you know,though
Mann says you know,though.It's a nice introduction to something you're still kind of thinking about and you want to put it into the conversation,but you haven't quite finished your thinking.It's kind of a signal.
(9)living death
A living death is really an interesting phrase because the two words together are opposites,with if you're living,you're not dead,if you're dead,you're not living.But sometimes you can put them together like that.It's called an oxymoron, and come up with a very strong,new meaning.(10)mull over
If you mull something over,you ponder it or consider it at length.You think about it long and deeply.

　どんな小さな大会のものであっても、金メダルというものをもらった人ってそんなに多くないと思います。校内の運動会や体育祭で一位をとってもリボンや賞品はもらえても、金メダルはもらえません（ですよね？）し、ゴルフコンペで一位でもせいぜいトロフィ（＋賞品）だと思います。
　嫌々ながらここ二年ほど、超ローカルな新年の駅伝大会に出場しましたが、今年も昨年に続き部門三位（私が足を引っ張り）ということで銅メダルをもらいました。およそメダルというものに縁遠い私にとっては、いかに超が何十個もつくようなローカル駅伝であったとしてもメダルというものはうれしいものですし、もらってみると銅より金がいいなあと思うのは人情ですね。
　こうして実際競技に参加してみると、オリンピックでメダル候補になっている人の気持ちの１億万分の１でもわかったような気がしますね。金メダルとは世界最高峰の証明、だからそれがかかった時の一回の勝負に、それまでの練習の成果を出し切る集中力というものは想像を超えたものがあるでしょう。
　でもまあ、やっぱり練習以上のものは試合ではでませんね。来年はもう駅伝は勘弁だなあ・・・。

　英語がある程度使えるようになっても、理解できない部分、その一つに文化があると思います。昨年U.S.に行ったときも、現地の人たちが、誰かが言ったある言葉に、同じ言葉を全員で返していることがよくありました。
　私がアリゾナのサンシティで、ビジターセンターの前で偶然すれ違ったある老婦人に言われた言葉で理解できなかったことがあります。軽くお互いに挨拶を交わすと、彼女は
”Do you come from San Jose?”
と笑顔で訊いてきました。私はそれに対してまともに
”No.From Japan.”
と言おうとしましたが、なぜこの人San Joseなんて聞くのかな？と怪訝に思い少し間をおいたところ、彼女もあれ？という雰囲気の表情になって
”Are you Japanese?”
と上目遣いで言ってきました。
　帰国後アメリカ人の友人にこの話をしたところ、
「Do you come from San Jose?って曲、知らない？え、知らないの？そのおばあさんね、その『曲』のこと言ってたのよ。」
と言い、そのフレーズを歌い始めました。アメリカ人にとってスタンダードであることで私が知らないことはすごく多くあります。常々語学を学ぶことは、その言語を使う人々の文化や考え方を知ることでもあると私は感じています。ですから、英語（米語）をカジっている身としては、アメリカ文化に関してもっともっといろいろなことを吸収していきたいと思っています。
(1)out on the street
Out on the street is another way to say homeless.I think women and children end up homeless because sometimes the women haven't had their works or anything,and as they're confused and in trouble anyway,but at least they're not being beat anymore.
(2)divorce alone
Divorce alone means only divorce.I think some people feel if you're separated from the person who is beating you,your problems are over,but usually they're not,unfortunately.
(3)get someone into counseling
Jenny says she needed counseling and that's a kind of professional help.They listen and discuss your situation with you,so you can understand the situation and your own reaction to it much better.But I think the fact that Lily listened sympathetically was also important because then Jenny could just talk about what was happening to her without going through more therapy.I think that's a difference between listening sympathetically and counseling.
(4)listen all the while
Jenny also mentions that Lily listened all the while.Another way you could say that is the whole time or maybe even continuously.
(5)take the initiative
If you take the initiative,you start things.You use your own will or willpower,your own decision to make a beginning.
(6)stand by
And to stand by is to wait or be on call.
(7)code ward
A code,of course,is a way to hide your message.A code word would be a secret word with a special meaning.
(8)make it plain
If you make something plain,you make it very clear or easy to understand.
(9)walk away
If you walk away from something,you avoid taking the blame or you escape your responsibility.
(10)get away with
If you get away with something,usually you've done something you shouldn't have done,but you're not punished for it.You've escaped.
(11)victims and abusers
It might sound a little strange to put victims and abusers together with compassion.But I think the current thinking about the abusers is that they're also suffering from something.Otherwise they wouldn't be doing that kind of behavior.

　今月号の現代の中で、翻訳家の笹野洋子さんが英語の第二公用語化について意見を述べられています。彼女の意見のタイトルは「英語を第二公用語にする必要はない」ということですが、彼女が英語の第二公用語化に全く反対というわけではありません。優秀な人材を育てるためには、そのすそ野を広げる必要があり、その意味では第二公用語化も意義があると話しています。
　しかし、笹野さんは「世間では英語ができなければ日本は世界と付き合っていけないように主張する向きもあるが、だからといって全員に英語を強いる必要があるだろうか？私（笹野氏）は最近オーストリアに行っているが、確かにオーストリア人とは英語で意思疎通ができる。しかし、それは外国との行き来が激しいことから起因するものであって、人口800万人のオーストリアには年間1,700万人もの外国人が入国するのに対して、人口１億２千万人の日本には410万人しか外国人が入国しない。('98世銀統計）また国内的には、日本は日本語によって意思疎通がはかれる国であり、イギリスによる植民地支配を受けたり、その国の中で少数民族が存在し、英語を公用語としないと効率的な意思疎通がとれない国とは事情が異なる。第二公用語化の唯一の目的は日本人の英語能力の向上にあるのだろうが、それであれば第二公用語化は意味がない。必要なのは『使えない英語』を教えている英語の授業を変革することだ。中学や高校の英語の授業を変革するためには、大学の受験を改革するのが一番早い方法。21世紀の日本人の５％が英語を日本語と同様に必要とし、20％が何らかの形で英語を使う人だとすれば（約４分の１が英語を使うと仮定。）、その５％の育て方を考えればよい。具体的には主要大学の全ての講義を英語でおこなうことだ。そうすれば入試方法も変わるだろうし、ひいては中学・高校の授業も変わっていくことだろう。」と主張し、日本人全員に英語を強いることに対して疑問を投げかけています。
　わざわざ高いお金を払って英会話学校に行くのも、高校時代に英語を熱心に勉強しなかったこともあるでしょうが、英語を学ぶ動機が大学受験にあり、その大学入試で求めている内容において「リスニング・スピーキング」といった分野が欠けていて、それについての努力を全くしてこなかったという理由があるかもしれません。しかし、学校で一人の先生が30～40人の生徒に英「会話」のレッスンをすることは可能でしょうか？私見では、やはり学校外での努力が必須だと思いますし、学校においては先生の数（しかもネイティブで英語学専攻が望ましい）を増やして、先生一人あたりの生徒数を10名ほどに限らなくてはならないでしょうが、はたしてそれは実現可能でしょうか？
　結局は英語の授業も選択制にせざるを得ないというのが現実ではないでしょうか。義務教育の中学までは今のスタイルでリスニングやスピーキングの部分を増やし、高校では自分の意思によって「ネイティブ並を目指すコース」「英語教養コース」といったように、自分の将来に合わせて選択を可能にするのです。例えば、医師を目指す生徒は英語も確かに必要だと思いますが、生物などの理科系の勉強がより必要だと思います。友人のネイティブが
「日本じゃ大学で勉強したことと社会に出たときの仕事と全く関連性がないってこと、多いでしょ？アメリカでは密接に関係していることが多い。だから日本の学生は大学で勉強しないんじゃないかな。その結果、大学名がすごく重宝がられてる。それはアメリカでも一緒だけど、有名大学であっても自分が学びたい分野が充実していなければ学生は行かないこともある。私立大学を別にすれば、U of 州名（例；U of Minnesota Twin Cities）、州名State U（例；Illinois State U）、東西南北＋州名大学（例；Northern Michigan U）というような序列は州内にあるけど、それは絶対的なものじゃない。」
と言っていましたが、そういう大学で学ぶことと将来したい仕事との密接な関係があって初めて、本当の意味で英語の授業内容が改革されるような気がします。

Something that's out in the open is public.It's uncovered.It's honestly and directly discussed.It's no longer a secret.
(6)affect women of all cultures
One short and fairly easy way to do that would be to say,it affects all women period.No other conditions.No extra points.A couple of other things you could say,though,a little bit longer phrases,it affects all women irrespective of status might work in this situation.Although I think the Japanese phrase is used much more commonly than English irrespective of.Irrespective of sounds fairly formal to me.
(7)shove,slap or punch
Lou mentions three ways as that sometimes people are battered.Shove means push,a short hard push that often makes your head snap.A slap is hitting someone with your hand open.It's often done on the head or the face.And a punch is when you make a fist with your hand and then hit someone that way.
(8)ER
ER is often used in English to refer to the emergency room in a hospital.It's the place you're taken if you need immediate medical attention.

　日経によるサラリーマンアンケート調査によれば、平日に最も時間を割く項目として「社内の人との付き合い、飲食」が最も多く、「自己啓発、勉強」がそれに続いているそうです。その一方で、「最近費やす時間が最も減った」項目は「社内の人との付き合い」が最も多かったようです。
　識者のコメントで、作家の加藤仁氏は
「社内の付き合いの重みが変わったせいでは？昔、酒の席と言えば、社内情報を得たり、自己PRの場だったが『飲むより大事なこと』を見つけたのかもしれない。会社という組織から軸を移し、自分という『個』に向き合う姿勢が感じられ、『自主の芽』は育っている感じがする。」
と話し、HILL（博報堂生活総合研究所）所長の関沢英彦氏は
「会社への帰属意識は薄れているが、仕事への熱意は衰えていない。これは個人や家庭の幸せをベースに仕事に取り組んでいるということ。以前の滅私奉公的な生き方は敬遠され、根回しなどと同一線上にあった同僚との付き合い酒も減っている。半面、語学力や法律知識など『異質への対応能力』に関心が強まっている。」
と話しています。頼りになるはずだった会社というものが、実は磐石のものではなかったとわかったり、また、今までのガチガチの組織に飽き足らなかったりして、外部でも通用する人間でありたいという気持ちが多くのサラリーマンの中にあるのでしょう。これは両氏のコメント「人生観は変わったというより、変わらざるを得ないというのが正直なところだろう。」（加藤氏）、「会社や国家といった世の中全般に対して怒りや不安を感じる一方で、開き直って自立していこうという意思がうかがえる。」（関沢氏）でも表れています。
　また、「共感できる有名人」ではライフスタイルを説いた著書がベストセラーになった大橋巨泉さんが最も多かったそうです。勉強して大学に入り、就職してマイホームを購入、ローンを返済したら何も残らなかった、という典型的な日本のサラリーマン人生に夢も何も感じられず、自分の人生の意義を再度問いただしている人が多いのでしょうか。

Another very simple way to introduce someone is to say this is.Sometimes in Japan I hear people say,he is Hiromi.That's not an introduction.You have to say this is.

But when Hiromi Araki asks her,he says,what brought you back?What circumstances happened so that you came back?
(4)it's a long story
Maybe it's the same in Japanese,I'm not sure.But often when someone begins this way in English, it means,we don't want to tell the whole story,I don't want to talk about it.
(5)to make a long story short
When you make a long story short,you often just tell the highlights or the most important points,and don't bother with the details.
(6)I'm sorry things didn't work out for you.
This is a good phrase actually.If someone tells you about some bad luck or hard times that they went through,you can show a little sympathy for them without being noisy about the details.Another similar phrase is I'm sorry to hear that.
(7)treat one like a queen
He probably did many things for her and gave her many things and wouldn't allow her to put herself to any trouble or anything unpleasant.
(8)tie the knot
Tied the knot is a phrase that's often used to mean got married or tie the knot,get married.Getting married is similar to tying yourself to another person for the rest of your life.And that's where the phrase comes from.
(9) just a "hi,how are you" kind of a thing
She probably just wanted to keep in touch and let Jenny know, even though they're not working together anymore,she's thinking about her now and then.

　あるPC関係のメーカーのCS担当部署が発行している雑誌の新年号に、クライン孝子さんの随筆が載っていました。「国際化の波」と題したその文章では、在ドイツ日本公的機関の所長の人事異動にふれ、経済・ドイツ語に通じた「優秀」な彼がいかにドイツにおける日本の信頼の確保に寄与したか、そしてドイツ人との意思疎通が機能的にはかれるようになった二年目で、異動によりドイツを去った彼が現在日本でドイツどころか国際的な仕事を一切していないこと、結論として国際化がすすむ今日において、日本は人材の活かし方がまったくなっていないということを書いています。
　確かに、海外勤務という機会を得て、現地の言葉を習得し、同時に歴史やメンタリティ、さらに政治・経済まで学んだ海外勤務者を貴重な「財産」として活かしきれていないということは多いのではないか、と想像されます。しかしこれは日本だけのことではないでしょう。かつてやさビジにおいても、U.S.における海外勤務者のことは取り上げられていましたのでご記憶の方も多いと思います。もちろん、U.S.においても日本においても、そうした海外勤務経験者をうまく活かしている例は少なくないとは思いますが。
　結局クライン孝子さんの視点から欠落している（敢えて無視している？）のは、corporate ladderの部分だと感じます。海外で活躍すること、それは適応力の問題があるにしろ、能力のある人であればこなすことができるでしょう。(往々にしてそういう人は他の仕事もできたりすると思いますが。）しかし、問題はそうした人材が組織の中で、海外勤務をずっと継続したり、帰国しても継続して海外部門で働くことを望んでいるかどうかということです。もっと端的に言えば、果たしてその海外部門がその組織の中で最も重要な部分であるのか、もっと中枢の部門の方がより権限が強かったり、その人材の能力を発揮させることにならないのか、自身の組織内のポジションにどう影響するのか、といったようなところは無視できないんじゃないか、ということです。転社（勤務先を替えること）がまだまだ難しい部分がある日本においてはなおさらです。帰国してからのポジション、その時の組織のその人に対する見方のことを考えれば、そうした「経験」を大切だと認識し、そうしたキャリアについては前向きに考えていても、その部門の「専門」になってしまったときの「リスク」に対する不安は、組織人の中に根強い、ということになるんだと思います。また、現地に適応してそのまま居続けたいという人は、他にチャンスがあればその組織から離れることも考えられ、ノウハウの外部流出という事態も起こりえます。
　実はこうした問題は海外部門だけでなく、いろいろな部門で起こっていることです。corpolate ladderからの視点は上に書いた通りだと思いますが、企業からすれば、ノウハウやクライアントとの関係の「連続性」が人事異動によって絶たれることは、経済的合理性がありません。しかしながら、クライン孝子さんがおっしゃるような「硬直化した人事システム」を改革するのが望ましいことは頭では理解していても、実際問題として「国内（社内）」事情優先から「海外（社外）」事情優先の考え方へ組織、個人ともに変わっていくのは容易ならざることかもしれません。

　昨日おこなわれた、21世紀最初の天皇杯。鹿島アントラーズが清水エスパルスを破って、今世紀最初の天皇杯チャンピオンになりました。
　このゲーム、私は今後おこなわれる2002年のサッカーＷ杯に関して示唆に富むゲームのように思えました。それは「勝負に対してナイーブであっても済む時代は終わった」ということです。
　象徴的なのは鹿島の２ゴールです。まず１点目。清水キーパー真田が味方DFにＦＫに対する壁の位置を指示していたときに、ＦＫを得ていた鹿島小笠原がシュート、なす術なく真田はボールを見送りました。ＦＫで審判がプレーを止めていたわけではなく、インプレーだったのです。もう一点はプレー中清水ゴール前で、清水ＤＦ市川が接触して倒れていた（ノーファウル）のですが、プレーは続行、詰めていた鹿島ＦＷ鈴木が２点目をゲットしました。
　日本的感覚で言えば、１点目は相手が準備ができてから、２点目は攻撃側が自らプレーを止めるべきだ、ということもあるかもしれません。しかし、私が見ている限りでは２得点とも「アンフェア」には感じませんでした。プレゼントボール（けが人が出たときなどに自主的にボールをタッチライン外に出し、スローイン時に自主的にプレーを止めた相手にプレー権を渡すこと）すべき場面で、相手にボールを渡さなかったわけでもなく、市川が倒れたときもゴール前のあの場面で攻撃側がプレーを止めるのはちょっと考えられないな、と感じます。
　天皇杯の決勝ということで両チームとも「勝ち」にこだわっていたことでしょう。だからこそ、つまらないケアレスミスをなくすべきなのです。Ｗ杯は非常に厳しいゲームになることでしょう。今日の清水のようなことのないよう、日本代表には教訓にしてもらいたいゲームでした。日本がＷ杯始まって以来初の「主催国で決勝トーナメントに進出できなかった国」にならないようにするために。
