(1)Intranet
Intranet and Internet are very similar in pronanciation. It's only the one syllable in the middle that you can tell the difference, well, that and the, context with the word used.
(2)dozen
Dozen,of course, means twelve. In this case,Lou might mean actually twelve people, but sometimes dozen is also used to mean ten or so,around ten.
(3)HIV
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus and sometimes people also call that AIDS virus.
(4)he didn't mention
That might sound strange to some people. He is taking a job while he knows he has terrible disease. But in the U.S.,companies are not allowed to ask directly about the state of your health. They should hire you for your skills and for the job.And they're not allowed to discriminate against you for all kinds of disbilities including HIV.
(5)this program
This life-threatening illness program sounds really nice.Usually in the U.S.,if you don't work full time, you get no benefits and of course you don't get full pay.
(6)AIDS
AIDS is another one of those acronym saying people usually can't tell you exactly what it means.I had a general idea what it was.But I had to make sure it's right by checking dictionary also.AIDS is Aquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
(7)one out of four
One out of four, you could also say in different ways like one in four, one quarter,25 percent.

RECKLESS is not how most people would think of describing Alan Greenspan.Mr Greenspan has acquired a reputation for brilliant but cautious macroeconomic management.

In the short-term, the Fed¡Çs actions are aimed at preventing a slide into recession. In the longer-term, though, such aggressive tactics could make the conduct of monetary policy more difficult. And the circumstances which brought about the Fed¡Çs change of heart could also pose problems for George Bush¡Çs fiscal plans—and specifically, his tax cuts.

The unprecedented postwar boom which the world¡Çs economic giant enjoyed during the 1990s divided opinion sharply, between those who thought it was all too good to last, and those who fervently believed that America had entered a new economic era.¡ÊÃæά¡ËUnfortunately for Mr Greenspan, much of the argument has centred on his tactics, and among economists and commentators, his reputation has plummeted. And when things go wrong, everyone looks for a scapegoat.

What matters for the Fed chairman¡Çs repuation in the short-run is whether his newly-aggressive interest-rate cuts work, and stave off a full-scale recession by giving the economy the kick-start it now needs.¡ÊÃæά¡ËBusiness investment, though, is expected to show a sharp slide in the first half of this year, compared with 14% growth a year earlier. This is already having a devastating impact, particularly on the high-tech sector.

How effective the recent rate cuts are will therefore depend on their impact on confidence—among consumers directly and the stockmarketsThe Fed has said it is concerned about stockmarket weakness because of the effect which falling equity wealth could have on consumer behaviour.¡ÊÃæά¡Ësuggesting that more cuts will be needed before the markets, at least, begin to feel more confident about the outlook.

But the course Mr Greenspan has embarked on is nevertheless a risky one. If it fails to revive confidence sufficiently, the outlook is grim, both for America and, in time, for the rest of the world. And even success will come at a price. For a start, there¡Çs inflation to worry about.¡ÊÃæά¡ËThe more people get used to larger movements—however justified these might be at the time—the more difficult it will be to exploit small-scale changes in either direction.

If it has all gone wrong for Mr Greenspan, spare a thought for President Bush. His tax cuts depend on the big budget surpluses being forecast for the next decade or more, coupled with a tight grip on spending. The figures in Mr Bush¡Çs budget for the coming fiscal year, which starts in October, assume economic growth this year of 2.4%. In the circumstances, this forecast looks wildly optimistic.

The new president blames his father¡Çs failure to win re-election in 1992 on the 1991 recession, which he felt Mr Greenspan could have done more to prevent. If a recession, or at least a painful downturn, is inevitable, getting it over with as quickly as possible at the start of his term makes sense for Mr Bush.

(1)I'll say.
I'll say is very strong agreement.
(2)on-line chat
I don't know if you've tried it,but a little bit did I've tried on-line chat, I find it very difficult to stop. It's really interesting. You can see the other people and it's not quite like conversation, you usually have to wait a couple of minutes and to get responses from various people. But it is a lot more immediate than e-mail is.Messages go back and forth if there's more than one person there.Sometimes the conversation gets sort of mixed up and they definitely influence each other. It's really interesting.
(3)grade-school agreement
In the U.S.,you can call younger school kids grade school kids or elementary school kids.We talk about the different years, the first year in school is first grade and then second grade, third grade,so that one reason that people say grade-school in the U.S.
(4)they
The way Araki-san uses pronounce in this section is kind of interesting. He talks about the main sponsor but then,he refers to the sponsor is they. This happens fairly often in English.Although the sponsor is one thing and normally you would say it.It's possible to say it.Because the sponsor is a company, a group of people, fairly often in English people will say they instead.

(1)capability
Capability is a kind of interesting word. It's very similar to ability, but ability usually refers more to skills and talents.Capability refers to numbers or size.
(2)some 20 million
Araki-san also mentions some 20 million customers. In this case, some means about or approximately.
(3)buttons
In English,a badge is usually something that identifies you,so if you go to a large conference, you might have a name tag or a badge with your name on it.Many people talk about policemen carrying badges. There are ID number on the metal sheild that are on the uniform.Buttons are the same as Japanese buttons to clothes, your shirts or your jacket. But buttons are also round thing with a pin and the purpose is not to identify you. They're usually for supporting some cause and some message or sending a message to other people.I heard one for the St.Patrick's day that said "Kiss me I'm Irish."
(4)pitch in
If you pitch in to do something, you contribute to a common effort. You help out on something that people are trying to do together. It can also mean begin to work.
(5)public servive announcement
In the U.S.,I think people often call public service announcement PSAs,because it's a lot shorter.I think sometimes programs or other companies' advertising things on television or radio, for example,I required by the government to spend a specific amount of time on PSAs.
(6)hotline
A hotline,of course,is usually free phone service for a specific purpose. They're often to help poeple with troubles.

(1)put a question to someone
If you put a question to someone,of course, you ask them, but usually putting a question to someone is asking about something fairly large or important. They probably need to reflect on how to answer it or maybe even find information in order to answer your question.
(2)do wer helmets
By adding the word do,Lee is contrasting the people who wear helmets with the people who don't until this point the whole conversation with about people who aren't wearing helmets.
(3)make sense
This is a good way to ask this question.Sometimes I hear people ask a group "Do you understand?" "Do you see?",but that could be a little insulting, because you're assuming what you're saying is difficult for them. And maybe that's true, but if you take the burden on yourself and ask "Does this make sense?" "Is my speaking clear?",if you ask that way, then there is no problem.
(4)in more concrete terms
Instead of in more concrete terms,Camile could've said specifically or concretely.

(1)bike
The word bike is I think used slightly different in Japan. If you say bike with no other circumstances,I think North Americans would imagine a bike with no motor,JItensha,in Japanese.I think in Japan a bike would means a motorcycle in U.S..You also call a motorcycle a bike, but ithout the right circumstances,if people don't know already you're talking about a motorcycle, they probably assume you mean a vehicle with no motor.
(2)co-
Co- is a prefix set attached to lots of words to mean equal or partners or doing something together. In this case,Hiromi mentions co-sponsor,other very common words with co- are co-author or even co-operate.Sometimes I hear people say cooperate, you have to have two syllable at the beginning that word so that English speakers would understand clearly.I think partially depends also on what you mean by equal,it doesn't,at least in my opinion, doesn't always mean absolutely the same. You can be different in equal,I think, depending on the situation.
(3)idetify oneself with something
Identify oneself with something,I think, must be very hard phrase to use,if you've learned well a foreign language. It basically means become known for,but I think it's even stronger with than that.If people think bicycle safety, they also think of this company. That's almost like a same thing,if you identift with something. You'd also become a part of yourself or it's already a part of yourself so that's very easy for you to see it and understand it.
(4)You're right on the money.
I imagine this phrase has something to do with lottery. If you choose exactly the right combination or the exact goggle-eyed,predict what's gonna happen, you get the most money back for your bets.I think that's what this phrase comes from you're right on the money.

(2)a real virtual company must take some getting to
Camile strengthens virtual and virtual company.I think probably for two reasons.Recently just the word virtual has been fashionable and it's applied to all kinds of things or all kinds of situations. So by strengthening the word virtual, she's saying, she means a company that is a company without a building.Virtual means almost the same as a real thing, but still not a real thing. And she comments on a real virtual office saying it might take some getting used to that's pretty much the set phrase that people use a lot of times, when they mean, when they're talking about something that's hard to adjust to.
(3)working from one's home
you might be wondering why Camile says working from your home, instead of working at home. You could probably use both phrases interchangeably, but there is a slight difference.Working at home sounds like you're telling the location and maybe it's fairly temporaly, you just happen to be at home to work.Working from your home sounds much more settled or organized that way, you're sending work out from your home. It's regular way of working.
(4)I can't see something happening
The phrase I can't see something happening or something being,I can't see is often used to mean I don't think it'll happen,I don't believe it's true.

A perk is a kind of small benefit that you get from your company or from your job. Most people talk about perks, but perk is short for another word, perquisite. Also perquisite is spelled with qu,not a k.
(4)Some people won't work for companies that don't permit casual dressing.

(1)in or out
The phrase "Is something or Are something in or out?" always refers to if they're fashionable or not.If it's in,it's fashionable or hip or cool.If it's out,it's your parents used or it's something only undesirable people, maybe, find attractive.I'm afraid that's beginning to describe me.
(2)geeks
Greeks used to be a rather negative term for people who were not very fashionable or maybe not very socially graceful. But since the dot-com revolution and since so many people related to computers and that kind of science have become rich and the business suits become important, geek is becoming more of a good term, especially if you say computer geek.
(3)Why on earth?
When Ben adds the phrase on earth to this question,"Why on earth?",he adds a lot of more emotion to the question. He can't understand why this is an important thing,he feels like there's no answer on earth,no rational answer.
(4)a la year 2001
The phrase a la year 2001 is kind of interesting.A la comes from French and it means in the manner of or in a following someone or something else way of doing things.I think a lot of English speakers learn it with a la mode for pie a la mode which means pie with icecream on top.And I think original French means the fashionable way to eat pie.
(5)have all the bases
Someone who has all the bases covered has everything under control. So there is another one as many phrases in English that come from sports especially baseball.

(1)forget about
It might sound a little funny for a company to tell their employees to forget about something. The phrase is forget about but the meaning is don't worry about something or don't bother with something. You can also say forget it in the same kind of a way to mean you're welcome or it was no problem helping you out.
(2)dress up
When you dress up,you wear nicer clothes than usual usually for special occasion maybe to go to a nice restaurant or some sort of reception or maybe even the opera.
(3)follow suit
I think it's kind of an interesting to use the phrase follow suit, when we're talking about business casual clothes anyway. But this suit is a little bit different.Follow suit comes from card games. And it means one player plays the same suit of cards as the previous player has used.
(4)dictate
If you dictate something, you order it that's one way to use the verb dictate.Another one which I think all language learners are very familiar with is the kind of practice when the teacher reads you something in the foreign language. And you're supposed to write it down exactly word by word with correct spelling in all that. You should never call your teacher a dictator.
(5)dress code
The next word in the sentence it's maybe a little interesting is a dress code.A code is a system of principles or rules. When I was in school in the U.S.,my high school and the earlier schools all had dress codes.I think dress codes started going out of style or became much more liberal than when I was little.I think that started happening in the 60s, the later 60s.
(6)tell me about it
I'd use the phrase tell me about it when I agree completely and I could have said exactly the same thing that the other person said.It has exactly the opposite meaning of the phrase itself.
