(1)fast
When you fast, you don't eat anything at all.I think it doesn't include liquid though. In that case, you wouldn't last very long at all.And I think that's also why they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.Your body is gone for hours and hours and hours and even if you weren't using a lot of energy, you've gone a long time without replenishing your supplies.
(2)You can eat what you like most of the time, just not as much.
I think a lot of people say this is a really key point to staying on a diet. You have to be really careful with portions more than what you actually eat.Of course,it's always good to avoid too much fat.
(3)grown-ups
Grown-ups is kind of a more familiar way to say adults,I think.I don't know for sure, but probably kids learn a word grown-ups before they learn a word "adult.
(4)genetic
I think many people know this and kind of use it as an excuse for not making more careful efforts at controlling their weight. Many people say,it must run in my family. It must be genetic.
(5)obese
In general English,a lot of people use the word obese to mean very very fat.Clinically,I think the definition of obese is 30% over your optimum weight.
(6)that,it's
In both of these sentences that and it's could be either the effort is easy or difficult.Or maintaining a healthy weight is easy or difficult.Probably it doesn't matter that much exactly which part of the previous sentence these words are referring to.But it really isn't clear here. This is very common in conversation. You can see on the face of the other person whether they've understood or not.In writing though you should be much careful about this kind of reference.
(7)middling
Middling is an adjective that usually means not important or not so much.It can often be slightly negative.
(8)step up
If step something up,you increase it or raise the pace.
(9)way back when
Way back,in this case, means long ago or long long ago.
(10)creature comfort
Creature comfort refers to physical ease, things that make you physically feel very comfortable and relaxed.
(11)the battle of the bulge
The battle of the bulge is a very well known phrase that people use to talk about dieting.Fighting the your waist getting bigger and pushing out and bulging.

(1)like
The way Araki-san used the word, like is very common in spoken English in the U.S.,it means for example.
(2)must
Must is often used for this kind of a logical necessity.Something that you look at and think about and come to a conclusion.
(3)as skinny as a rail
Here's another one of those as something as something phrases.Earlier we had as fit as a fiddle,as big as a battleship, this one,I think,is pretty clear.A rail is either one part of a train track, the long metal strip or rail could be like hand railing, something long and narrow anyway. This is usually used negatively, meaning too thin.
(4)gobble
If you gobble something, you eat it very rapidly and often in big bites.
(5) crash diets
Crash diets,of course, are the diets that help you lose weight very rapidly.Crash is also used in other cases sometimes to talk about something very rapid and maybe somewhat drastic like a crash course in some topic,if you have to learn something very rapidly, you could take a crash course in it.
(7)the circular file
Then the circular file in English always means the trash, throw something into the trash, getrid of it.A lot of trashcans especially in offices around,so the circular file is sort of a satirical way to talk about papers that you don't wanna keep.
(8)go on a diet
In fact,I've even read that it's more dangerous to go on a crash diet, because when you rebound you put on more weight than you originally lost. And sometimes they even talk about your weight yo-yoing,going up and down and up and down, just like a yo-yo.

(1)putting on the pounds
Putting on the ponds is a very common way to say gaining weight or building up fat.
(2)dropping pounds
Instead of dropping pounds, you could say shed pounds or lost pounds.
(3)out of shape
If you're out of shape, you're probably very fat or quite fat, somewhat fat,but also you haven't been exercising,so your muscles are not fit either, and way out of shape means very much out of shape.
(4)one flight of stairs
Sometimes people don't even mention the stairs part of this phrase. They just say flight.Say,yeah, well,if you come visit me,you've got be able to walk up four flights. My building doesn't have an elevator.
(5)sea change
A sea change is a very deep and fundamental change.
(6)six bottles of beer
When he talks about six bottles of beer,he means the small bottles like you have here in Japan. In the U.S.,it's very unusual to buy beer in larger amounts. The containers are always around the three hundred milliliter size.
(7)death warmed over
I really like this phrase death warmed over.It sounds kind of terrible, but I think it's a really good illustration of how people look sometimes when they've overdone it the night before. If you think of food, leftover food that you reheat the next day,or a couple of days later, sometimes it really looks bad.And then if instead of thinking of food,if you think of death and re-warming it,it sounds really bad.
(8)That got me started on CRE.
I think I'd started, too,if I looked like death warmed over.
(9)shed
Shed is a verb that means lose or drop off.It tends to be used like this with weight lost but especially with animals.Dogs and cats shed their coats often in the spring. Some dogs and I think cats also just shed hair all year long. And snakes shed their skin,I think, most of them once a year.
(10)flaps of flabby skin
Flaps of flabby skin, that's a little bit hard to say but I think a lot of people would get a really good picture of that and certainly think it's something to avoid.
(11)fitness club
I think people even now sometimes refer to it as going to the gym, although that sounds a little more old-fashioned.
(12)stumble
Araki-san is asking him if he fell of his diet along the way.Did he make a mistake or have some hard times?

(1)a big as a battleship
A battleship,of course,is a very large ship and I think it's used in this phrase because of the alliteration with big,the two bs make kind of a nice sound.Another similar phrase is also very common though,He is as big as a house.
(2)Long time no see.
This phrase is used all the time in the U.S.It's not grammatical or anything. It's just, you know, describing the time, but people use it a lot as much as Japanese people say µ× ¤·¤Ö¤ê.
(3)guys
Guys originally meant males. But nowadays it's often used to mean both.Usually a mix group you can say how are you, guys?Although my parents used to call my sisters and I and my brother,if he was around, you guys. You guys have to go to bed early or You guys have to clean up the kitchen like that.¡Ê½÷À¤À¤±¤Î¤È¤¤Ï¡©¡ËUsually you wouldn't.You could do it if you really like really close working colleagues, maybe they would say it then.
(4)diet
I think it's very interesting. Most of the time when people use the word diet, they mean cutting down your eating or being careful how you eat so that you can lose weight. But really diet is just the food that you normally eat and you should say a weight lost diet.It really should be qualified, modified with some phrase or description.Or you could be on a strict diet because of some kind of illness or disease or maybe religious beliefs.
(5)kind of practice CRE
I think it's interesting,he says he kind of practices CRE that means he doesn't do it really strictly, although probably more in spirit than down to the letter.
(6)keep an eye on
If you keep an eye on something, you watch it or monitor it.Either you wanna catch it if it begins changing or you wanna be sure if it changes. You need to see the situation.
(7)You and me both.
This is another interesting phrase.I think this really should be you and I both, you and I both keep an eye on our calorie counts. But I'd say this is a set phrase. If people are only going to use that, that a little bit of the phrase I usually say you and me.
(8)second helping
Sometimes people shorten second helpings even shorter and just call it seconds.Who'd like seconds?I think it refers to helping yourself to some more food, taking some more food.Often in the U.S.,food isn't served on separate plates. You have a large bowl with potatoes and you have a large bowl or plate with the meat served on it.And then everyone at the table serves themselves off the serving dishes.Sometimes one person will take the food off the serving dishes and put it on the individual plates for everybody. But I think that's why we say second helpings, help yourself again or let me help you to a second portion.
(9)That's the spirit.
Whenever someone is doing something enthusiastically or with the right frame of mind and they're doing what you want the way you want it,to encourage them, that's the spirit.
(10)raid
If you raid something, you attack it and usually the kind of attack is small and rapid and the attackers often carry something off, carry something away.So raiding the refrigerator is alliteration again, the two rs.And it's also maybe the way people feel like they eat in the middle of the night, open the door, grab something that looks good and then eat it.

(1)overjoyed
Overjoyed is kind of interesting. In the second part of this vignette,we heard the word overstretched which is pretty negative,it's stretching too far. But,overjoyed is just completely positive.
(2)explain the game plan
By explaining the game plan in the U.S., not only do his people, his direct reports understand more clearly why they are doing, what they are doing and how it fits together in the larger strategy, but they also receive respect from their boss because he feels it's important for them to understand.
(3)subordinates,direct reports
I think people like the phrase direct reports because then you don't have to use the word subordinate,I think people feel like they have more respect if their boss considers them not so much subordinate but as talented people with a different job.
(4)weak spot
Of course, manager's weak spot would be something like not handling time really well or having trouble with some kinds of subordinates or some kinds of other people's behaviors or it could be something in business that he hasn't mastered yet.Soft spot often means this person is a little bit romantic or sympathetic about something that he should be looking at clearly and strongly.
(5)detached onlooker
A detached onlooker is an important thing for many Americans and not so much the onlooker part but the fact that the onlooker is detached.I've read that it's a little different in Japan, people in Japan might prefer someone who knows them very well because they feel like that person can give better advice that way.In the U.S.,often if someone is evaluating you or helping you to settle an argument, most people feel more comfortable with a detached or objective person.Because then that person won't play favorites. They look at the situation and analyze it clearly and logically and they won't let their emotions take over.

(1)courtesy
Courtesy is the considerate treatment of others.I think some of it comes directly from how you feel about people, and some of courtesy is observing social rules and things that you should do.But the social rules are usually set up also,so that it's easier for people to be considerate of each other.Sometimes people talk about common courtesy, and usually they mean just the things that you do for other people, just because they are other people.
(2)abrasive
Someone who's abrasive is irritating or they're rather rough, they rub you the wrong way.
(3)the coach will have taught him
That tense might be a little tough for a lot of people the coach will have taught him, this is looking forward into the future and talking about something that will be finished in the future, because it's future tense,of course, needs will, but because it's also talking about something that's done or will be done in the future, you have to have taught, the perfect tense. So all together you end up with future and perfect and finished and mixing up past and present and future, and it comes out as will have taught in English. When you need it,you need it absolutely.
(4)you've learned
This way of using you in sentences in English is very common. It means someone in general. In this case,of course it means managers who've been coached in people skills. It doesn't mean you in particular or someone in particular. In British English,I think they use the word one more often than in north American English. You can be used in that same way.I often worry a bit about this usage of you when I'm speaking myself.I catch myself now and then saying things like,oh,I don't mean you,I mean people in general. On one hand,I think, the people I'm teaching English to need to be exposed to this usage, but on the other hand,I'd feel really bad if they thought I was speaking about them in particular. So if you hear someone using this and you're not sure if it's people in general or you specifically, please ask.All you need to do is say,Who me? or Who us?
(5)Me either.
North Americans often say Me either or Me neither.I think it adds a very strong emotional aspect to saying I agree.
(6)headhunter
In English, headhunter is usually used only in the business world for finding people that you want,a more formal way to talk about a headhunter would be an executive search company or a person from a company who does executive searchers.Scout would be used more for a talent,so for singers or actors or sports people.

(1)take advantage of
If you take advantage of things,it's usually admirable. If you take advantage of people,it's not good, because it means you're using employees on your own purposes and you're not taking it into account what they want.
(2)hurting
Araki-san uses the word hurting to talk about the troubles of the top guys.He could've said suffering especially if he wanted to speak more formally.
(3)a dozen,hundreds
Liu-san uses both a dozen and hundreds in a big kind of a way.So these companies started off with very few employees and ended up with a large number.
(4)stuff
Stuff is the word that I think North Americans use a lot. It's a vague word,it means things. In this case,if Ben had had wanted to speak mpre precisely,he could've said something like problems or issues.
(5)delegate responsibility
In fact,I've read one of the major differences between supervisors and managers. It's just this;Supervisors are responsible for all the details of what the people do,the people they're supervising. But managers are supposed to be able to choose the people who can handle the details well and then those people without dealing with the details.
(6)It's not possible to have a direct hand in everything.
Sometimes that's called micro-control or micro-management.
(7)shoulder
If you shoulder something,if you shoulder a lord, you take on a burden or a responsibility.
(8)downsize
Downsize,I think,is usually only used with work related lord.It would be pretty funny,if you say something like,"I'm trying to downsize my food and take.",I think the meaning,of course,is very understandable, but it's in a different area and it sounds funny and humorous.
(9)emotional bind
And emotional bind is probably some kind of psycological trouble. And I think this information just points out more clearly that coaches are for skills and skill development, they're not for other kinds of help that people might need.
(10)the brink of something
The brink of something is usually the edge or the verge of it.Especially if it's something that might be a little dangerous on the other side like the top edge of the steep place, those kinds of things are usually called brink. You can also say the brink of war,the point of war just ready to begin.

(1)understand
Ben says he understands that the CEO has done this.Often people use the word understand, instead of know when they're talking about something they heard or found out.It could even be a rumor that's going around.
(2)people skills
But saying people skills sounds so much more friendly and human than interpersonal skills.
(3)slot into
Lou chooses to talk about what Galaxy is doing as slotting the new guy into the job.It makes it sounds like the job is sitting there just waiting for the right piece to be put in.A lot of times people talk about jobs and positions this way.I think it sounds casual and relaxed. But it might not be the best way to talk to the person who's been slotted in.
(4)brilliant
Bright talks more about how well he uses his mind and brilliant includes more than just whether he is intelligent or not.
(5)dot-com companies
I think it's really interesting that Lou has to describe the dot-com companies.A while ago, just saying dot-com company meant successful. Now that they've been having some harder times recently, you have to talk about which dot-com companies you're working with.
(6)budget time
People in the U.S. often talk about time as if it were money, budgeting time, saving time, spending time, even making time. But I also heard a phrase one's saying the time is more precious than money because money, you can lose and make again but once you lose time,it's lost forever.
(7)corporate ladder
The corporate ladder is the phrase that people often use to describe the hierarchy of the company. And they also describe developing your career is climbing the corporate ladder. So as you are working, you get better and higher positions. Some people even talk about stepping on people on the way up,which means perhaps somebody who's really ambitious, uses other people somewhat to boost their own careers.
(8)breakneck speed
Breakneck speed means very very fast.Perhaps, even reckless.
(9)explosion
Explosion here of course doesn't mean blowup or fail. It's referring to the rapid growth and expansion of e-business.

Not two months into his American career, Ichiro is becoming similar to Griffey, Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez. His game performances are becoming events. What distinguishes an event from just another game is when casual fans feel the urge to go out of their way to check it out.

(1)brisk
Brisk means cool and refreshing. It could mean quick. It also includes the ideas clear and crisp.
(2)workout
And a workout is an exercise routine or a period of time while you exercise carefully so that you feel very relaxed.
(3)perk up one's ears
If you perk up your ears, you pay attention.
(4)club
Golf clubs and clubhouse,I think, are different clubs.Golf clubs,of course, are those sticks kind of bent it the end that are used for hitting the ball around. The club in clubhouse I think comes from clubs meaning groups of people who get together because of similar interests or intentions.
(5)let off steam
If you let off steam, you relieve stress or pressure.
(6)hang out
If you hang out, you're spending some time idly. You're being somewhere without really doing much of anything.
(7)browse
Browse is kind of an interesting word,I think.Recently I think I've only heard it relation to the Internet like you use a browser to help you find things on the Internet. But originally I think browse was used mostly with books and bookstores or maybe not mostly but especially.A lot of people when they had time to spare will go to bookstores and take books out look at them a little bit maybe read a couple of pages, read some other titles. That was browsing.
(8)shopping arcades
Shopping arcade would be smaller than a shopping center or shopping mall.Shopping malls are usually indoors.Shopping centers are usually outdoors uncovered between the stores. And shopping arcade is usually one isle or a small street that's covered and has many small shops.
(9)live music
A live music,of course,is with actual performers performing music. It's not recorded. In English, though,I don't think people say live house to talk about bars or night clubs that have live music.
(10)knock back
Instead of knocking back drinks, you could also say tossing back drinks.
(11)slip into
If you slip into a taxi, you get in smoothly. It sounds like something quick and easy to do.You're not taking a long or difficult trip.

(1)airfield
An airfield is pretty much the same things as an airport or airbase. It's an area of land from which airplanes operate. But in my mind they do have a somewhat different nuance each of them.An airfield to me sounds like a much smaller kind of a place maybe out in the country, maybe it's because the word fields is included in it.I think it could be used either commercially or by the military. An airport sounds more like a commercial kind of a place especially for human passengers not cargo. And an airbase sounds very military to me.
(2)semi-private
A semi-private agency would probably be partially controlled by the government, partially by non-governmental sources that's the private part.I think the purpose would be to have them become better through competition or at least partially I think that would be some other intention.
(3)hike
A hike is almost always a big hike in English even if you don't add big.It means a pretty large change in the amount of money that fees bring in.
(4)And get this
And get this is a phrase that's fairly often used to really draw attention to the next following sentence.
(5)airport-development
That last phrase is kind of a difficult one national airport-development plan.If you take a look at the text, you see there's a hyphen between airport and development. That tells you that airport-development plans will be national. It's not national airports that are going to be developed. In speech you can hear the difference because slightly different rhythms and intonation.
(6)in the meantime
In the meantime basically means until then, while we're waiting.
(7)not get you anywhere
I like this phrase. You could take it very literally. You can't travel on rage but also of course he means it won't help you,it's not supportive or useful kind of a thing to do.
(8)shouting and fist-pounding
Shouting and fist-pounding is a fairly common phrase to use to describe arguments or arguing.

(1)ease congestion
Easing congestion means helping with the crowding, finding some way to keep the planes and a whole airport and flying process less crowded.
(2)make a call
If you make a call, you judge some situation and then decide what should happen.Lots of time, they say referes and umpires in sports also make a call.
(3)lie in one's lap
If something is lying in your lap,it means you're responsible for it,you're holding it,you're the one who has to take care of it.
(4)heated competition
Competition is often discribed as hot or heated or heating up.It means becoming stronger and stronger or vigorous.
(5)prime cuts
When I see the phrase prime cuts,it always makes me think of beast, but actually it does have the same meaning in this situation and also prime cuts is the best section or the best portion of the beaf.Of course,in this case,it's the best share of market.
(6)bump
If you're bumped when you try to fly somewhere, figuratively it means you've been pushed out of the plane that you were planning on flying with.It means the plane with overbooked and all the seats were assigned before you got there.
(7)explain why flights are delayed
I haven't actually seen any reports about why flights are delayed.Occasionally I hear people talk about weather causing delays that seems to be very easy to talk about, because airlines can't really be responsible for the weather. But they do publish on time reports how often does each airline arrive on the time they said it would, how good their shedule.
(8)rebook
Rebook would be making new reservations for the passengers so that they can get on other flights smoothly.

(1)The Day From Hell.
This phrase has been really fashionable the last couple of years, not just Day From Hell, but anything that's terrible, you say The Something From Hell.People often answer this way,if they have something bad happen to them.
(2)first off
Ben says first off,I think usually people would say first or firstly or first of all.By saying first off,it sounds like it's a kind of unstuffable series of events, not just for second or third.
(3)on standby
On standby is a little bit interesting. On standby can talk about waiting for anything you're prepered and waiting. For airlines,in this case,it means waiting for the next available seat. They used to have programs where you could fly on standby meaning you could fly if there were open seats on flight you wanted and then usually you'd get a discount on your flight.
(4)proceed to sit
In this sentence,Ben Leonard's choice of the word is kind of interesting, especially the part where he said proceeded to sit.Sitting means staying still and not going anywhere, but proceed usually means gets started or moving forward. So putting those two together is a little bit ironic.
(5)LaGuardia
That's kind of interesting. In Japanese and in English, the name of the airport is slghtly different,[lagua;dia]in English and [laga;dia]in Japanese.
(6)fine by me
The phrase, that's fine by me,usually means I like it or I approve or it works well for me.
(7)raise hell
Raise hell is another way to say complain, but complain in a very strong amd vigorous kind of a way.
(8)blow one's top
Blow your top is another phrase that means erupt in anger or be very angry suddenly.
(9)takeoff clearance
Takeoff clearance,I don't know why,but in airline, they,in the airport business, they talk about clearance for a takeoff. It means permission.

(1)search engine
A search engine sounds pretty mechanical, but I think usually there's a kind of software that helps you what you're looking for on the Net.
(2)caught in the Net
Seymore is using caught in the Net in two different ways here all in one phrase. If you look at the text, you'll see Net is capitalized so it means it's short for the Internet. But if you write net just with a regular uncapitalized letter caught in the net means caught like police catching criminals or catching fish in the net. That's why she adds the phrase,so to speak, right afterwards because it's a little bit funny. It's got kind of a double meaning.
(3)put out of commission
And then she also said that the scam sites that are caught in the Net are put out of commission.Something that's put out of commission is stopped or it's made unable to function.
(4)nip in the bud
Araki-san talks about potential scams, meaning that they're,they have future possibility but at the time they're discovered, they're not actually stealing money from people. And then he uses the phrase, nipped in the bud,to describe how they're stopped.Nipped in the bud probably comes from gardening.Something that buds are the beginning growth for leaves or flowers and if you nip the bud or pull the bud off,you won't grow, you won't become mature.
(5)prosecute
If you're prosecuted, you've been taken to court.Somebody is pursuing you so that you'll be punished. And they also include to the full extent of the law.
(6)that's fine and dandy
But I think it's usually no used just for preys or straight description.I think this phrase is usually used when the person wants to say there's nothing wrong with that there's a bigger problem or a more important related item.
(7)be one's best line of defense
If you're your own best line of defense, you take full responsibility for protecting yourself. You don't rely totally on someone outside.

(9)reactive,proactive
Seymore calls the program at the Feds have put into place proacting. That means they're looked ahead and they're seen problems that might be developing. And they're decided to take action before the problems occur.Reactive is waiting for the problems and take action.A lot of people misuse proactive. They use it meaning be very very very active, but it doesn't mean that.

(1)way too
Araki-san talks about these treatments being way too expensive.Way is often used together with too as an intensifier, makes it double intense. You could say far too or much too instead.Way is probably used more in conversation than in writing.
(2)concerned doctors
Lou talks about concerned doctors. You could call them worried doctors.
(3)fly off the charts
Something that flies off the charts rises very rapidly. It's very similar to shoot up.
(4)northern Asia
Northern Asia is a phrase you don't hear so often and I think many English speakers think of southern places, when they think of Asia. But,of course,Japan and China are both actually prettier far north in the world. Some of the ways of describing Asia are not always really clear.People can name maybe a couple of countries that would fit in that category.
(5)basic AIDS education program
I think a basic AIDS education program would include topics like how AIDS spreads, how you can protect yourself and just what kind of a disease it is.I've read about how different countries have handled the AIDS problem. And once that start early with very strong and clear educational programs seem to have been able to contain the epidemic much more easily than countries who either waited while before they started programs or never really implemented anything.
(6)effective education
This is a really good question for anybody involved with foreigners or people different from yourself to ask about any topic that you interested in.How do you build something into a foreign workplace?Your regularly ways doing things might work just fine. But you can't assume that they will because the other people have different ways of thinking and different attitudes, different in this case educational styles.

(1)keep one's ear open for
Lou talks about keeping your ears open for misinformation. He's,of course, talking about things that you're told, things you hear from other people maybe even on television. This phrase can also be used with eyes,"keep your eyes open"which means,"Be alert."
(2)that's just not true
Instead of saying, that's just not true, you could replace just with simply,That's simply not true.
(3)remind of reality
Lee says she needs to be reminded of reality. If you listen to this sentence and hear it literally,it sounds funny like she's got some sort of problem with reality, she lives in a fantasy world.I think she's just saying that it's easy to be afraid and it's nice to have people,I support you and remind you,you don't need to be so afraid.
(4)overall
Overall,of course, means generally or for the most part if you look at the big picture.
(5)account for,make up
Account for and make up,both have the pretty much the same meaning.Camille uses them both in her sentence. You could change the positions and still have pretty much the same sentence.
(6)ethnic minorities
Also she talks about the U.S. ethnic minorities making up less than one-quarter of the population. That's overall. In specific areas there're much larger present of the local populations.
(7)at risk
In the U.S. recently in almost every case when people are talking about someone who's in danger, they tend to use the phrase at risk. It's quite popular these days.Population is at risk. So,at risk or high risk group are people who are being threatened.Something that's risky is something that contains of threat.

(1)pose
If you pose something, you present it for attention or consideration.People often say pose a question, ask a question. In English, talking about a pose in Japanese meaning, you could say strike a pose.
(2)labor force
Lee also mentions labor force.Labor force usually refers to everyone in a company. You couldn't use labor force for the workers within one company, you would have to say the company's work force.
(3)protected by federal law
In the past, people with different diseases or other kinds of health problems were often denied jobs, because of their health problems, not because they couldn't do the jobs. Now,it's illegal to do that,so if a company tries to keep out the job or tries to fire you or make you leave the company because of these kinds of problems, you can sue them, you can get your job back or get your pay.
(4)admitted they had never thought about dealing with
I think it's interesting that Lou says they admitted they had never thought about dealing with AIDS at the work.It sounds like they feel like it's something they should have been thinking about or planning for.
(5)lo and behold
Lo and behold is a kind of interesting phrase.I think it sounds a little bit biblical. It sounds sort of old fashioned, but just recently I heard it on a radio almost everyday when I listened to talk shows.
(6)goof off
Goofing off is usually not doing what you're supposed to do.The manager mentioned that everyone thought the employee was goofing off,not working, playing around too much, not being serious.
(7)freak out
Freak out is a phrase that's used a lot in speach to talk about someone who lose his control or goes a little crazy.Their behaviors are quite a bit out of ordinary.
(8)turn a cold shoulder
Turn a cold shoulder sounds fairly similar to the Japanese way of saying the same idea. You could also say they brush someone off, they ignore the person, they turn the back on the person.
