　最近では個人の取引というよりは、事業者の電子モール化しているネットオークション。私も２～３回は利用しているものの、やはり利用に際して信用問題で抵抗感が拭えないので、古いPCパーツなどオークションでなければ手に入らないようなものに限定しています。ところで、欲しいものを探して、数あるネットオークションをいちいちいくつもまわるのは面倒くさいですよね。知っていらっしゃる方も多いかもしれませんが、Bestlot.comはそんなときてとても便利なサイトです。私は今週号の日経NetN@viで知りまして、早速のぞいてみましたが、なかなか利用しやすそうです。
(1)keep one's ear open for
Lou talks about keeping your ears open for misinformation.He's,of course,talking about things that you're told,things you hear from other people or maybe even on television.This phrase can also be used with eyes,keep your eyes open,which means,be alert.
(2)that's just not true
Instead of saying,that's just not true,you could replace just with simply,That's simply not true.
(3)remind of reality
Lee says she needs to be reminded of reality.If you listen to this sentence and hear it literally,it sounds funny like she's got some sort of problem with reality,she lives in a fantasy world.I think she's just saying that it's easy to be afraid and it's nice to have people support you and remind you,you don't need to be so afraid.
(4)overall
Overall,of course,means generally or for the most part,if you look at the big picture.
(5)account for,make up
Account for and make up,both have the pretty much the same meaning.Camille uses them both in her sentence.You could change the positions and still have pretty much the same sentence.
(6)ethnic minorities
Also she talks about the U.S. ethnic minorities making up less than one-quarter of the population.That's overall.In specific areas there're much larger percent of the local populations.
(7)at risk
In the U.S.,recently in almost every case when people are talking about someone who's in danger,they tend to use the phrase,at risk.It's quite popular these days,population at risk.So at risk or high risk group are people who are being threatened.Something that's risky is something that contains of threat.

　総務省が発表した９月の労働力調査（速報）で、完全失業率が5.3％になったそうですね。よく言われることですが、この日本方式の集計方法は「甘め」に数値が出るようで、欧米の基準で言えばだいたいその２倍の失業率があるとされるようです。（詳しい算出方法は知りませんが。）いよいよ日本経済も完全に危機的な状態になったと言えそうです。
　そもそも「構造改革」とは何なのでしょうか？メディアなどに目を通しながら、安サラリーマンの私はこんな風に思います。－構造改革というのは、財政再建が最優先で、そのために行政改革と規制緩和をしようというものでは？もちろん、行革と規制緩和は民間活力の活性化にはつながるが、それ自体の目的は景気がどうこうのレベルでなく、あるべき姿を求めていくところにある。つまり、景気回復と構造改革は別次元で語られるべき。これだけ深刻なデフレ不況下で、構造改革のもとに緊縮財政をおこなえば、ますます企業の生産設備は余剰となり失業者は増大する。実物経済にお金がまわらないのでデフレ（生産力＞通貨量）はよりすすみ、人がモノを消費しなくなって、企業の業績は危機的状況、倒産・リストラで失業者が増えることになる。さらには株価が以前の四分の一まで落ち込んで市場での資金調達能力が大幅に低下している。社会保障や年金もカット。こんな状況で人々がお金を使うでしょうか？新産業を興そうにも、こんな経済状態の中で、投資して人を雇用しようとする人がそんなに多くいるのでしょうか？いくら量的緩和で日銀当座預金の残高を６兆円にしたり、買いオペで銀行の国債を買って通貨を増やしても、公共事業等で直接需要が発生したのとは異なるので、景気への影響は限定的だ。国民の生活を守るためにも景気対策を超最優先課題として今すぐ取り組んで欲しい。－

(2)labor force
Lee also mentions labor force.Labor force usually refers to everyone in a country.You couldn't use labor force for the workers within one company,you would have to say the company's work force.
(3)protected by federal law
In the past,people with different diseases or other kinds of health problems were often denied jobs,because of their health problems,not because they couldn't do the jobs.Now,it's illegal to do that,so if a company does try to keep you out the job or tries to fire you or make you leave the company because of these kinds of problems,you can sue them,you can get your job back or get your pay reinstated.
(4)admitted they had never thought about dealing with
I think it's interesting that Lou says they admitted they had never thought about dealing with AIDS at work.It sounds like they feel like it's something they should have been thinking about or planning for.
(5)lo and behold
Lo and behold is kind of an interesting phrase,I think.It sounds a little bit biblical.It sounds sort of old fashioned,but just recently I heard it on a radio almost everyday when I listened to talk shows.
(6)goof off
Goofing off is usually not doing what you're supposed to do.The manager mentioned that everyone thought the employee was goofing off,not working,playing around too much,not being serious.
(7)freak out
Freak out is a phrase that's used a lot in speach to talk about someone who loses control or goes a little crazy.Their behavior is quite a bit out of ordinary.
(8)turn a cold shoulder
Turn a cold shoulder sounds fairly similar to the Japanese way of saying the same idea.You could also say they brush someone off,they ignore the person,they turn their backs on the person.

　昨日は久々にビデオを見る時間があり、リラックスして見られる映画ということで、「バグズライフ」を見ました。
　主人公はアリのフリックです。フリックのアリの国では、バッタに貢ぐためのエサを人（蟻？）海戦術で列をつくって一つ一つ運んでいます。これは雨期が訪れる前にやらなくてはいけません。しかし、女王は新しいアイデアはなく、本来リーダーシップを取るべき若い新女王は何をしてよいか右往左往するだけ。フリックは合理的にエサを集めるための「収穫機」を発明しますが、仲間はバカにして無視します。するとバッタ達が突然襲来し、アリ達はあわててアリ塚に逃げ込みますが、逃げ遅れたフリックはあわてるあまり収穫機をエサの台にぶつけてせっかく集めたエサを池の中に全部落としてしまいます。バッタ達は怒って、アリ達に短期間で倍の量のエサを集めるように命じ、責任を感じたフリックは「よその国」へ行って他の虫に助けを求めに出かけますが、他のアリはフリックだけに責任を押しつけ、良いやっかい払いができたと言うだけで、非効率な作業をまた始めます。それではもう間に合わないことは明らかなのに・・・。
　この後はぜひ見ていただきたいのですが、この様子が何か見たような光景なのです。今必要なのは何か、そのための行動は何なのか、そして要求されるそのスピードはどうか、リーダーはどうあるべきなのか・・・。登場人（虫）物を通して、それがsarcasticに思えてきます。
(1)Intranet
Intranet and Internet are very similar in pronanciation.It's only that one syllable in the middle that you can tell the difference,well,that and the context with the word is used.
(2)dozen
Dozen,of course,means twelve.In this case,Lou might mean actually twelve people,but sometimes dozen is also used to mean ten or so,around ten.

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus and sometimes people also call it that AIDS virus.
(4)he didn't mention
That might sound strange to some people.He is taking a job while he knows he has a terrible disease.But in the U.S.,companies are not allowed to ask directly about the state of your health.They should hire you for your skills and for the job.And they're not allowed to discriminate against you for all kinds of disbilities including HIV.
(5)this program
This life-threatening illness program sounds really nice.Usually in the U.S.,if you don't work full time,you get no benefits and of course you don't get full pay.
(6)AIDS
AIDS is another one of those acronyms that people usually can't tell you exactly what it means.I had a general idea what it was.But I had to make sure it was right by checking dictionary also.AIDS is Aquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
(7)one out of four
One out of four,you could also say in different ways like one in four,one quarter,25 percent.

　日本シリーズはヤクルトが優勝し、今年のプロ野球も幕を閉じました。MLBもマリナーズが負けてしまったので、すっかり寂しい感じです。さて今年、シーズン本塁打数日本タイ記録を成し遂げた近鉄のローズ選手について、解説者の豊田泰光さんがこんなコラムを書いています。

「近鉄の優勝における、ドジャースとの業務提携が果たした役割について、もっと突っ込んでみようか。・・・開幕からいた外人投手がちょっとマズいなということになって、早速ラソーダが、すぐさま新しいのを２人連れてきた。・・・外人だけじゃなく日本人だって、自分の後釜がすぐに補充される体制があるなら、ちょっとの間も気が抜けない。それにローズ。去年は幾分元気が無かったじゃない、そこにドジャーズ組のラソーダ子分達がドカドカやってくるもんだから、今年はその反発もあったんだろうな。」
　確かに昨シーズン、関西出張の折りにオリックスVS近鉄＠GS神戸を見に行ったとき、ローズって４タコだったなあ、（そう言えば、イチローの初回のホームランも見損ねたっけ。）なんてことを思い出しました。もちろんローズ自身、日本の投手に慣れたことや、彼なりに相手投手を研究したこと、そしてバッティングの調子もよかったという要素はあったのでしょうが、精神的な部分でドジャースとラソーダが影響したことは豊田さんの指摘通りかもしれませんね。
　更にこの部分では頷かされるなあと思いました。
「「野球という学問」について言えば、アメリカは日本の数百歩先を行ってる。・・・ＴＶの野球中継を見ててごらんよ。いろんな解説者が語るウンチク、みんながみんな違うこと好き勝手に言ってるだろ？・・・こういう現実なのよ。彼らが伝えたい技術の本質はみな一緒。それが、コーチが100人いれば100通りの言い方になってしまう。・・・アメリカには素晴らしい理論書がいくつもある。もちろん内容がてんでバラバラなものじゃなく、それぞれが補完しあって発展して来たもの。」
　野球という学問が体型づけられているかいないかを論じる以前の問題として、日本ではプロがアマに教えてはいけない!?という摩訶不思議な規定があって、プロがアマにコーチした場合「罰せられる」のです。この前どこかで読みましたが、札幌の高校の野球部が「元」プロ選手が所属する「ノンプロ」チームの指導を受けたかどで、対外試合自粛か何かの処罰を受けたそうです。プロにアマが教えてもらって、誰が被害者になり得るのでしょうか？

　ワールドシリーズが開催されている、Pheonixのバンクワンスタジアムは、球場内にプールがあることでも有名ですね。
　Pheonixにはちょうど昨年の今ごろ行きました。(Around the worldのコーナーはかなり更新が遅れてますが・・・。）Pheonix都市圏は全米でも五本の指に入る大都市圏ですが、砂漠の中に街並みが点在するという感じで、日本人にとってはそれほどの都会には思えないことでしょう。NYやChicagoタイプの街ではなく、LAに近いように私は思います。といってもLAよりは更に建物がまばらな感じですけど。ただ、LAもPheonixも車がなければどうしようもないということは言えますね。
　ダウンタウンにはいくつかの高層ビルが建っていますが、それもNYにはほど遠く、聞くところによれば、ダウンタウンから空港が比較的近距離にあるせいで、高さも制限されているということです。もっとも、これだけ土地が余っている(？)のに高層ビルって必要あるのかなあ、と何も知らない私は思ってしまいます。
　私はダウンタウンに宿を取らなかったのですが、シェラトン(ヒルトンだったかも？)のような全国チェーンのホテルはダウンタウンにあって、ここからNBAサンズ、NHLコヨーテスのホームスタジアムのAmerica West ArenaおよびDバックスのバンクワンスタジアムまでは徒歩可能です。両スタジアムはほぼ隣り合って(と言っても建物が大きいですから距離感はそれなりにありますが)います。私はAWAしか入っていませんので、一度バンクワンにも入ってみたいですね。

　ドットコム企業に将来はないのだろうか？－よく日米を比較して、IT技術の浸透具合、ITビジネス（経営）のステージの違いが語られます。曰く、U.S.ではコールセンターの費用がかさんでいるが、日本ではまだ大型コールセンターが少ない、とか、U.S.ではCRMを実践しているもののサービス率が低下しているのに対し、日本ではまだCRM確立企業が少ない、とか。
　そもそもニューエコノミーが誕生したのは、ネットスケープが株式を公募し、大幅な値上がりをしたのが最初だとされているそうです。こうしたベンチャー企業が株式市場から資金を調達できることが証明され、次から次へとオールドエコノミーに挑むIT企業が続出しました。よく挙げられる例が、Amazon.coのBarns & Nobleに対する攻勢や、e-toysのToysRusへの挑戦です。物理的な店舗を構えて営業をしてきたこれらの企業は、防衛策として急激なIT投資をすすめ、IT企業のみでなくこうした企業の恩恵にあずかったのがシスコなど、ということになりますね。ところが、経済が減速するに従って、Amazon.coを始めとするドットコム企業の収益性が低いことが発覚、株価も下がって資金調達力も下がってしまった、その一方オールドエコノミーもIT投資が一巡、IT不況でドットコム企業の脅威も少なくなり、IT投資を控えるようになってしまったと。
　U.S.では買い替えサイクルが長くなり、成長が鈍化したパソコン市場の活性化のために、Windows XPに期待するむきもあったようですが、今一歩、機能的な部分で新しさがなく、次のOSに期待をせざるを得ない、という声があるそうです。マイクロソフトの独禁法訴訟にもそれが影響しているようで、今回は司法省も分割を断念したのだとか。景況がMSに味方した、と言えそうですね。

2001/10/25

　NYのテロ事件は航空業界に大きな影響を与えています。日本でも全日空などがグァム便を減便するなど、旅行業界にとても大きなインパクトがあるようですね。ドットコム企業の中でも、PricelineやTravelocity、Hotel Reservation Networkなど旅行関連企業が軒並み減収を強いられているようです。
　その一方で、セキュリティ関連企業などは株価を上げていたようです。リスクマネジメントの必要性は以前から言われていたことですが、今回のように想定外のことが起きたことで、そうした企業のビジネスチャンスは更に広がったように思えます。また、異なった意味におけるリスクとしては、SCM（Supply Chain Management－原材料仕入れから顧客への配送まで一貫して物流を管理、在庫の存在をゼロに近づけて生産販売体制におけるムダをなくす）に走った企業も、考え方を変えるかもしれません。世界規模での調達、生産がいかにこうしたリスクに弱かったかを示す事件であったと思います。

(4)tickle someone's funny bones
If you tickle someone's funny bones,you amuse them or make them laugh.But also if you hit your funny bone,that's when you hit your elbow on edge of a table or something like that and it gives your very sharp pain.

　MLBで２チームが消滅するという可能性がでてきました。

Bud Seligコミッショナーは資金的に問題のある２チームについて、解散の可能性を否定していない。おそらく消滅するであろうチームは、モントリオール・エクスポズと他の２チームのうちの一つ－フロリダ・マーリンズとタンパベイ・デビルレイズ－であると思われる。

I think before Generation X had grunge music.Grungy is an adjective many people knew meaning dirty or oily dirt,because you haven't washed something soon enough.

Old hat is also kind of an interesting phrase.It means passe or old-fashioned or trite.
(4)be into
If you're into something,you're interested in it,you mix yourself up in it.
(5)rosy
Rosy in English can mean sort of pink colored,rose colored like saying in Japanese.It can also mean optimism or something that's promising.
(6)hit on
If you hit on someone,you make overture to them.It's often used to describe guys trying to pick up girls in bars and things like that.
(7)info
Info is short for information.It's used a lot in modern English.
(8)smart cookies
A smart cookies is slang for someone who is clever,strong,sharp who really knows what's going on and can take care of themselves.

　不況下で多くの日本企業の利益が軒並み落ち込んでいる中、花王は2002年３月期の連結営業利益（グループ会社の本業の成績）が12期連続で前年を上回る見通しであることが、日経紙上で伝えられています。これだけデフレが進んでいる中で、国内売上高も中間期において前年同期比１％のマイナスに留まり、一方円安効果で海外売上が増収となったため、連結売上高でも中間期前年比2.4％のプラスだということです。
　増益の原動力となったのは、売上高原価率（42.9％）の改善で、これが前年同期比1.3ポイントのマイナスで、55億円程度の影響があったようです。新聞紙上では、その理由を、生産現場でのカイゼン活動、製造・販売一体の強みを活かした各組織間の情報共有による在庫削減（IT利用により、販売実績が翌日の生産から配車の計画まで反映）等としていました。
　花王はよくHOYAなどとともに、EVA（スターン・スチュワート社のTM）やそれに類似の成果概念を経営目標に取り上げている先進的な企業として語られます。かなり以前にEVAについてはふれましたが、再度ここで簡単に言いますと、売上から事業費用や税金、有利子負債コストを差し引いた税引後純利益から更に株主資本コスト（株主期待利益）を引いたものがEVA（Economic Value Added－経済的付加価値）になります。すなわち、EVAがプラスであるということは、資本提供者全体へのコストを上回るリターンを実現することとなり、財務的な企業価値を高めることになります。
　EVAがプラスとなるような企業には内部に「聖域」というものが存在しえないと個人的に思うほど、高い経営目標だ（内部的には厳しい目標・当然厳しいリストラもありえる）と感じますが、紙上でもそれを裏付けるように、花王では主力の家庭用品において今期から二千点ある品目数を千点まで絞り込む、と伝えています。私が花王に感じるのは「スピード」ですが、これくらいでないとP＆Gなど強いライバルが控えている世界市場では太刀打ちできないのでしょうね。

Toddlers is another word often used to talk about small children.The day before,we also had the word tots.Tots is probably a larger category of small kids.Toddlers are usually two or three years old.It describes the way little kids walk when they first learn.
(5)late teens
If you said high teen,I don't think anybody would quite know what you are talking about.
(6)scratch one's head
Scratching your head is a gesture that indicates you're puzzled about something.You're not quite sure how to understand something.I think in Japanese there is a very similar gesture.
(7)cottage industry
Something described as a cottage industry is usually an industry that's fairly informally organized.It tends to be small.Sometimes the companies work out of their own homes.
(8)knocking on doors
If you're knocking on doors,you're offering your services or you're approaching someone or a company.
(9)inside track
And the inside track usually refers to some kind of a good position. Position where you get an advantage in competition.

　The Economistに"ギャングを雇う"という記事が載っていました。不況にあえぎ雇用不安のある日本を尻目に、U.S.はまだまだ雇用市場が逼迫しているのかな、と思い、読んでみました。

Lucrative means something that produces wealth or something that's profitable.There's another word related to this lucre.And it's usually only used in the phrase fifty lucre,talking about money that you earn in an underhanded or illegal way.

If you appeal to someone,you're trying to get a sympathetic response out of them.You're trying to get them to look on you favorably.

　本拠地セイフコフィールドで連敗してしまったマリナーズ。もはやこれまでか、と思いながら、今朝は早起きして、NYからの生中継を見ました。途中までは何とも重い雰囲気の中で、このままずるずると無得点のまま、失点を重ねてしまうのかと思いきや、ヤンキースのレフト・ノブロックの落球のおかげで流れが変わりました。最後には「もう明日にとっといた方がいいんじゃない？」と思うような得点シーンの連続でしたが、えてしてその翌日は打てなかったりするんですよねー。
　今日のところは勝ちましたが、LCSでヤンキースに勝つのは難しそうですね。これに勝っても、ダイヤモンドバックスのジョンソン投手とシリング投手を打つくずすのは至難の技でしょう。もっとも、バックスと比べて、ヤンキースの投手陣の方が手ごわいとは思いますが。
　でも例えLCSに敗れたとしても、ここまでチームを引っ張ってきたイチロー選手や佐々木選手はよく頑張ってくれたと思います。チームの柱、アレックスロドリゲスが去って、シーズン前はいいとこアリーグ西部地区で２位、と言われていたことを考えれば、上出来でしょう。来年佐々木投手がシアトルに残るかどうかはわかりませんが、ぜひ来年もポストシーズンで両選手を見たいものですね。

　横浜Fマリノスの川口選手が今日を最後にチームを離れることになりました。ゲームは降格阻止における当面のライバル・セレッソ大阪に敗れてしまいましたが、延長まで持ち込んだことで最悪のケースからは免れることができましたね。
　川口選手の英国チーム移籍によって、一応、海外でプレーする（予定の）選手が全てのポジションで揃いました。FWの高原、西沢、MFの中田、小野、稲本、DFの宮本と現在試合に出場しているかどうかは別として、とりあえず海外移籍を実現して（する予定も含み）います。
　プロ野球ではU.S.への選手流出が取りざたされ、プロ野球の危機だ、とか騒がれていますが、サッカーではむしろ海外への選手流出を進めているように感じます。それは代表チームの強化につながって、国内でのサッカー人気高揚に一役買うことになるのでしょうか。
　イチロー効果で今年MLBをTVで見て、選手を覚えた人も多いことでしょう。ここで日本のプロ野球もひとつ、E・マルチネスなどMLBのビッグネームを取ったらどうなんでしょうか。かつて、Jリーグでもビッグネームを取って、日本で彼らのプレーを見ることができました。日本でのキャリアを活かしているように思えるMLBの選手たちもいるわけですし。MLBとNPBが相互に関係を深めることによって見えてくる新しい可能性があると思うんですけどね。ビッグネームでなくても、マリナーズ版新庄（と個人的に思っている）元気者のC・ギプソンなんか日本に合うと思うんですけど。そのためには、優秀な日本人プレーヤーがU.S.にどんどん渡り、MLBで活躍することによって、NPBがプレーするに値するリーグであることを示さなくてはならないでしょう。

　モノづくり、といえば少し前までは日本企業の十八番のように思えたものですが、海外に生産拠点をシフトする企業が増加し、国内の工場跡地がそこかしこに見られるようになりました。最近ではそれがさらに進化して、生産部門そのものを子会社化、あるいは、国際的な生産専業企業（EMS／Electronics Manufacturing Services）に売却する企業が増えています。

　U.S.では炭そ菌の被害の広がりが懸念されていますね。以前からこの炭そ菌によるテロについては心配されていましたが、先月、ＡＢＣの生物化学兵器によるテロに関しての特別番組がＮＨＫＢＳで放送されていたのをご覧になった方も多いと思います。識者、政府関係者などを中心とした人たちがパネラーとなり、各界の代表者たちが質問者となる一種のパネルディスカッション方式の番組でした。
　そこでは最悪のシナリオがまず示され、それは炭そ菌感染の疑いのある患者の発見から数日後にアメリカの大都市にパニックがおこり、多くの被害者が発生する、というものでした。番組の中では、現実に既に抗生物質は品薄状態である、ということに対し、「実際に持っている抗生物質が菌に適しているのかどうかもわからないし、また、適していたとしても菌自体がその抗生物質に対して耐性があるかもしれず、はたして抗生物質を保持しているのが有効なのかどうなのかはわからない。」ということが話されていました。また、救急隊員協議会の代表者からは、「出動の要請があれば我々がすぐに出動することになるが、我々の感染予防策が確立されていない。これに対して政府はどう考えているのか？」という質問が出されましたが、担当者の回答は（私から見たら）要領を得ないものでした。
　パネラーの一人、ワシントンDCのアンソニー・ウィリアムズ市長は、番組の最後に「大切なのは誤った情報で人々がパニックになるのを避けることだ。郡政府、州政府は確かな情報を人々に迅速に公開するよう最大限の努力をすべきだ。」と語り、司会者は「この番組は皆さんを脅かそうとしているわけではありません。万一このようなテロが発生した場合のリスクをここに示し、自分が何をすべきかということを考えてもらうきっかけとしたかったのです。」と話していました。
　日本でこのような番組が放映されたら、すぐにパニックになってしまうのでしょうか？多少対策が後手にまわっても、パニックのリスクを避けたい、というような思考回路があるような気がしてならないのですが。

　デルコンピュータのビジネスモデルはいろいろなところで語られているところですが、その中でもデルモデルといわれる発注してから３～７日で到着する早さを支えるサプライチェーンマネジメントの部分が特に注目されていると思います。
　顧客がネットなどで注文すると、アジアパシフィックカスタムセンターから仕様などの情報が、ペナン島の工場に流れ、基本的には半日で組立、その後ソフトインストールなどを経て、FedExで成田へ到着します。到着したPCはキーボードなどの周辺機器を含めてデルのロジスティックセンターで組込・梱包され、FedExで国内配送、発注者の元に届けられます。
　これを支えているのが、有名なBuild－to－Orderの受注組立生産のビジネスモデル、部品のJust In Time納品、Ｖｉｒｔｕａｌ Integrationといった特徴であると言われています。特にJIT納品においては、あのインテルでさえ、デルのためにパーツ供給施設をその工場の近くに作ったということが特筆される、とされます。
　なぜ、ガリバー寡占状態のインテルがJIT納品に対応したか？そのカギは顧客価値を追求するデルのビジネスにおける発想の転換があったという点です。マイクロプロセッサなどの部品から始まり、PC組立、ソフトインストール、周辺機器セットアップ、そして購買客サービスまでつながるPCのサプライチェーンの中には、さまざまな企業が関わっています。マイクロプロセッサならインテル、組立にはコンパックなどのＰＣメーカー、ソフトではマイクロソフトなど。顧客にとっての価値に目を向けてみれば、必ずしもこうした既製品のシステム構成は理想のものではなく、むしろユニット単位で自らの価値にかなったものを購入した方がそれを最大化できるわけですね。セルサイドからバイサイドへの発想の転換、それがデルのビジネスモデルの元でしょうし、それによって蓄積されたデータがインテルに非常に強い興味を持たせ、ＪＩＴ納品を交換条件として引っ張り出すことができた、ということなんですね。

　日本においてもCRMを重視する企業が多くなりました。さまざまな業界でそれぞれの方法でCRMを取り入れています。CRMとは聞きなれない方もいらっしゃるでしょうが、Customer Relation Managementの略で、ごく簡単に言えば、顧客との取引情報の一元管理とそれにもとづく個別対応マーケティング活動、そしてデータベース化された顧客情報の企業の経営戦略への活用、といったことを指すと思います。顧客主義、ということですね。
　そこでよく言われるのが、新規顧客獲得と「個」客維持にかかる一人あたりのコストの問題です。つまり顧客の収益性の問題ですね。一説には、新規顧客獲得コストは、既存顧客維持コストの５倍である、と言われています。したがって、顧客をその場限りの単なる商品購買者とするのではなく、ライフタイムヴァリューの視点から顧客をとらえ、優良顧客の保持・育成や休眠顧客の活性化をはかっていくことが肝要だ、ということになりますね。もちろんその上で、新規顧客の獲得もはかるということも重要だということですが。
　ここでよく誤解されている、と言われるのが、顧客の「何」がほしいか？ということです。ちょっと考えてみると、粘atisfaction狽ナはないかと思いがちだと思います。もちろん、顧客満足度は重要な指標であるのでしょうが、Juran Institute（http://www.juran.com/）によれば、全米トップ200社の中で、顧客満足度向上に何らかの手段を講じた結果、それまでより収益性をアップさせたのは、わずか２％だったそうです。それならば燃etention狽ナあるのか？商品を購入していただいたお客様に万全の注意をしている、と認識している企業は非常に多いと思いますが、その実、顧客の50％近くが追加の機器やサービスをその商品を購入した企業「以外」、ひどい場合はライバル企業から購入している、という調査もあるようです。

　America's New Warに関し、アメリカ人の友人からいくつかの質問を受けました。ほとんどが私じゃなくて、高名なエコノミストか誰かに聞いてくれ、というものばかりでしたが。
　彼がまず訊いてきたのは「今回の戦争は日本経済にいい影響を与えるのか？」ということでした。いわゆる戦争特需があるのかないのか、ということですね。正直言ってそうした問題について私は深く考えたことがないですし、知識もありませんが、個人的意見として、「今回の戦争（と呼べるかどうかは？ですが）に関しては、日本経済に直接的なプラスの効果はないのではないか。それは産業構造の変化と今回の戦争の特殊性という二つの理由による。よく、『遠くの戦争は買い、近くの戦争は売り。』といわれるが、産業構造の変革はこうした言葉を過去のものにしていると思う。戦争特需というものは、戦争によって道路、建築物のようなインフラが破壊されたり、耐久消費財が失われたりした結果、大きな需要が創出されて、そうした物の生産施設を抱える国に好景気をもたらしたものだと思われる。しかし、日本をはじめかつて第二次産業が中心であった先進国においては、生産施設がより安価なコストを求めて海外に移転し、労働人口を見てもわかるように第三次産業が中心となっている。したがって、戦争当事国において工業製品の需要が起こっても、直接的な利益は得にくい状態である。また、今回戦場となるであろうアフガニスタンは長年の戦乱でほとんどのものが破壊しつくされていると思われるし、一般市民まで巻き込んだものではなく、きわめて限定的な攻撃が予測されるため、今回の戦争によるインパクトはそれほどのものではないのではないか。」と答えました。

Identify oneself with something,I think,it must be very hard phrase to use,if you've learned it while you're learning a foreign language.It basically means become known for,but I think it's even stronger with than that.If people think of bicycle safety,they also think of this company.That's almost like there's the same thing,if you identify with something.It almost becomes a part of yourself or it's already a part of yourself,so it's very easy for you to see it and understand it. (4)You're right on the money.
I imagine this phrase has something to do with betting.If you choose exactly the right combination or the exact score or predict exactly what's gonna happen,you get the most money back for your bet.I think that's where this phrase comes from,you're right on the money.

　昨日に続いて空爆前の話で、今日はシアトルに住む友人の話です。
「アメリカの対応は日本人から見たら過激に映るかもしれないな。ブッシュも煽ってるというか、愛国精神に訴えてるというか。メディアがまたうまいことその効果を上げてるっていうところもある。セーフコでの追悼式で45,000人が星条旗をひらひらさせてるところを見ると、感動してしまう部分もあるよ。これを国中でやってるわけだから押さえようがない。もっともパートナーはブッシュ派ではないので、大統領の言ってることは筋が通ってない、って家では話すけど、外ではそんなこと口にできないね。シャレにならないよ、そんなこと言ったら。日本人に対する嫌がらせ？まだ聞いたことないな。でも、テロ後のTVアンケートではよく今回のテロとパールハーバーとどちらがショックだったか、っていうのはやってたな。U.S.も３年前にはパキスタンに爆弾落としたのに、そういうことは忘れちゃってる。（私が紹介した）キング牧師の言葉はすばらしいね。ああいう言葉をアメリカ国歌とともに皆で朗読すべきだと思う。」

　アフガニスタンの空爆が始まって数日が経ちますね。今後どうなっていくかはわかりませんが、戦闘は長期化するとの予測を米英両首脳が言明していますから、この世界的混乱がしばらくはあらゆる分野で影響するのは確かなのでしょう。
　少し古い話で恐縮ですが、空爆開始前のアメリカ人の友人達の声の一部を紹介したいと思います。
「３月にNYに行ったばかりだけど、巻き込まれなくて本当にラッキーだった。日本のニュースでも連日取り上げられているけど、日本や他の国にもこの事件が直接影響するからだと思うわ。もともとアメリカ経済は減速していたし、今後の予測でも更に悪化するとされていたけど、世界経済にこの事件はより深いキズを負わせることになるでしょうね。日本人も今回のテロで亡くなって、ここ日本に住んでる私としてはたいへん悲しいことに感じられるんだけど、同胞があんな目にあったのに、周りの日本人たちがあまりにケロってしてるのは信じがたいわ。もちろん、私はアメリカ人としてのプライドは今も持ち続けている。だけど、おそらくすぐ始まるであろうU.S.とその他の国のサポートによる報復については懸念してる。自分が外国に住んでいて、母国が攻撃を受けたなら、報復を目的とした戦争には賛成するでしょうね。でも、そういう人でも、母国と住んでいる国の行き来や自分自身が今後犠牲者となる可能性を考え始めれば、戦争に関しては消極的になるんじゃないかな？いろいろな見方があるけど、おそらくきわめて近い将来起こることは皆にとってすごく重要なことだと思う。私たちは年ormal"と言う言葉の意味が永遠に変わり続けるものだとわかってるんだけど、できるだけ早くこの問題が解決して、生活がNormalに戻ってほしいよね。」

　中国で作れば安いけど、日本製は高い。－よく言われることですね。その理由が人件費や地価などに求められることもよくあることです。
　そもそも内外の価格差というのは何なのでしょうか？よくいろいろなところで同じ商品・サービスの価格を、日本と海外の数カ国との間で比較したりしますが、その多くはいわゆる非貿易財、つまりドメスティックにしか流通しないものではないでしょうか。なぜなら、貿易財であれば、激しい国際競争にさらされ、競争力のない企業は淘汰されて、価格が国際的に収斂していくことが通常であるからだ、と思います。（もちろん、ダンピングや関税などいろいろな要素がありますから、一概には言えませんけど。）
　ただ、それはあくまで為替レートで換算された上での話であって、例えば、海外で電車に乗った方が安い、だから日本は物価が高いといったようなことは単純に言えないのではないかと思います。また、よくユニクロの商品は中国で生産するから安い、といいますが、これは中国の生産性が格段に高まっていることに加え、円高（対人民元）が影響していることは無視できないと思います。こうしたことが繊維産業だけに限定されていれば、全産業における繊維業の占める割合を考えると価格差に与える影響は低いわけですが、実際は多くの産業でそうしたことが起こっているのではないかと思います。
　では、非貿易財の内外格差は全く縮まることはないのか、というとそうではなく、生産性の低い内国産業においては、海外の企業が直接対日投資をおこなえば、競争力の弱い企業は淘汰され、価格の低下は起こりえるでしょう。
　ユニクロに話を戻しますと、安価な輸入品が国内で流通すれば、その分家計支出は節約されるわけですから、その節約分が他の商品・サービスの消費にまわり、需要が増加すればいいことになりますよね。その需要の増加でそうしたサービス財などの価格が上昇すればいいわけです。こういう前提があって初めて内外価格差の縮小が国民生活にいい影響を与えるのであって、単純に値段が下がったからいいとはいえない事情がそこにあると思います。

現金および現金同等物（Cash and cash equivalents）が約10億US＄、それに対して、長期借入金のうち返済期限が短期のうちに到来するもの（Current maturities of long-term debt；日本だとワンイヤールールって言いますが）が約１億US、長期借入金（Long-term debt less current maturities）が約７億５千US＄ということで、ほぼ記事の内容と合致しています。（「無借金」というのは運転資金の借入がないという意味？）これだけの財務体質でなければ、今のような非常時に雇用を守ることはできない、ということが逆に言えるってことなんですよね。

　デフレを象徴するような100円ショップ「ダイソー」、皆さんも一度入られたことがあると思います。おそらく多くの方が「どうやってあんな低価格を実現できるのだろう？」と疑問に感じ、「中国あたりで作られた商品ばかりなんだろう。」と想像されているのではないでしょうか。
　実は私もそう決めつけていました。ところが先日お会いした方のお話では、衣料、陶器などは確かに中国製ということですが、樹脂品などは日本製だというのです。100円が販売価格になっているわけですから、仕入価格はもっと低いはず。通常考えれば、国内生産では実現不可能のように思えます。
　これを実現しているのが、静岡県にある「スルガ」という会社なんだそうです。この企業では生産設備を持たず、あくまで商品企画・設計（CAD）に特化し、生産は大手メーカーの空いたラインを利用、収益率は悪くなるものの、電機、自動車産業の低迷で稼働率の減少に悩む部品メーカー等は「せめて稼働率が上がるのならば」ということで、生産を引き受けるということがあるようです。こうして企画、生産された商品が低価格でダイソーの商品棚に並ぶわけですね。商品企画力でスルガが優れているのは言うまでもないのでしょうが、同社ではそれと同時に徹底した担当制を採用しているようです。一つの商品の企画から設計、生産までを極めて少人数の責任制にして、商品あたりの人件費を最小限におさえる努力をしているということですね。（もちろん、発注のロット、決済方法、企業間取引のIT利用などの要素もありますが）言い換えれば、マーケ力、設計・生産技術の徹底的な自動化といったコアに集中しなければ、こうした低価格は実現できないだろうし、デフレ下で消費者に受け入れられることはできないということなんでしょう。

The beginning of that sentence might be a little hard to use or understand the what with.This phrase usually means something similar to because of or now that we have or with things like and then you get a list,it introduces a list.
(7)In the company I work in,everybody answers their own phones so that includes the president when he is at his desk.Our extension numbers internally form part of the phone number externally,so you just have to add the exchange number to your extension number to have the outside line.

　狂牛病が騒がれだしてから、すっかり牛肉を食べなくなってしまいました。街で外から見えるステーキ屋さんやハンバーグ屋さんを見ても、客席はガラガラです。（たまたま？）安心をうたえばうたうほど、気にかかってしまうのは世の常のような気がしますが、それにしても政治家の先生がここぞとばかりに牛肉を食べるパフォーマンスをするのはいただけないように思います。
　日経ビジネスEXPでは、農水省の罪には次の三つがある、と指摘しています。
①水際で防がなかった罪
英国で狂牛病が大流行した5年前、牛の肉骨粉の輸入禁止国を英国と北アイルランドだけに限定した。（結果として欧州大陸ルートからの感染を防げない）
②再三の警告を無視した罪
欧州委員会が6月、「日本で発生する可能性あり」と連絡してきたが、「日本は安全」と取り合わなかった。同時期、欧州委員会が他国の狂牛病危険度調査に入ったが、「欧州基準は厳しすぎる」と拒否。
③疑惑発覚後の罪
「風評被害」の拡大を恐れ、牛の全頭検査をしばらくの間、逡巡していた。（厚生労働省が先に検査実施を発表したため、あわてて追随している）「疑惑の牛は焼却処分」と発表した。（実は茨城県内などで飼料用として加工されていた）
　野球に例えれば、セカンドゴロをセカンドがファーストに暴投、バックアップに入ったライトがよせばいいのに二塁へ送球、これまた送球がそれて、これを拾ったレフトがバックホーム、大暴投で結局バッターがホームインしたようなものでしょうか。小さなミス（農水省のエラーは小さくないと思いますが）が重なって、大きな被害をもたらすのはよくあることだと思いますが、それにしても今回の農水省のエラーで生活を脅かされることになった方々は少なくないと思います。どこか箍が外れていることは確かでしょうから、至急さまざまな対応が目に見える形でおこなわれることを強く希望します。

Viable is kind of an interesting word.The original meaning is capable of life or capable of living,but it's often used to describe things that are possible. (9)tenuous
Tenuous usually means a little bit weak or shaky,not much substance.It's usually used in the negative way.

You might be wondering why Camille says working from your home,instead of working at home.You could probably use both phrases pretty much interchangeably.But there is a slight difference.Working at home sounds like you're just telling a location,maybe it's fairly temporary,you just happen to be at home to work.Working from your home sounds much more settled or organized that way.You're sending work out from your home,it's your regular way of working.
(4)I can't see something happening.
The phrase I can't see something happening or something being,I can't see is often used to mean I don't think it'll happen,I don't believe it's true.

　実際、野球における日米のつながりは非常に長期間なものがあるのだが、その関係を見てみると長年にわたってアメリカは平均以下の選手やロートルの選手を日本に送りつづけてきた事実がある。言ってみれば、アメリカから日本に渡ったプレーヤーは米国産の車のようなもの－大きいだけで信頼性が低い。
　しかし今日、選手の日米間の移動には大きな変化が見られている。シーズン開始第一週にノーヒットノーランを達成したヒデオ・ノモを含め、開幕日には８人の日本人プレーヤーがメジャーでベンチ入りを果たしている。
　そしてもちろん、イチローはファンの足を球場に向けさせ、日本では人々をTVにかじりつかせている。
　「ある友人が日本の全国紙を持ち帰ってきたんだけど、一面全体にイチローの写真が掲載されてるんだ。」Lincolnは続ける。「想像してごらんよ。日本の経済は低迷し、政治は混乱している。だから日本の国家としてのプライドはここでプレーするイチローにかかっていることを。」

　シアトル市内パイオニアスクウェアにある、David Ishiiさん経営の本屋のメインウィンドウでは、野球の本、マリナーズのスケジュール、そしてマリナーズの記事を見つけることができる。彼は新設マリナーズの最初のゲームからシーズンチケットを持っており、Bill Stein、Salome Barojas、Orlando Mercadoといった往年のプレーヤーが活躍した頃からの筋金入りのマリナーズファンだ。彼はいわゆる「二世」、これは日本語でいう日系米人第二世代であるが、第二次大戦中は家族とともに中西部に強制収容された経験を持っている。

　もしあなたがイチローを目の当たりにしたことがなくても、どこかで彼の活躍については読んだことがあるはずだ。スプリングキャンプ中、マリナーズは160を超えるパスを日本のメディアに対して発行し、その後は24のプレスパスを日本のレポーターに発行、24席あるカメラマン席のうち７席を日本のカメラマンに与えた。ちなみにこの数字には、すべてのマリナーズのゲームを放送しているNHKは含まれていない。
　分類すれば、マリナーズ番のレポーターには三種類ある。
　「日本では期待通りにプレーすることが難しかったんです。」イチローは続ける。「ここに来た一つの理由は、もう一度自分にとって野球をプレーすることが楽しいと思えるようになりたかったからなんです。」
　ロッカーがイチローと隣り合う、センターのMike Cameronはこんな風に話している。「イチローがMLBでしているプレーを今まで誰も見たことがないプレーだ、って皆が思うのは痛快なことだよね。」　二人の日本人プレーヤーはロッカールームでも人気者だ。ササキとイチローがチームメートに日本語を教え、その代わりに彼らにJay Buhnerが英語を、Jose Paniaguaがスペイン語を教えている。（もっとも、ベルリッツの外国語練習テープには全くでてこないような言葉だが。）また、チームメイトはササキのカラオケパフォーマンスと彼がそこで茶目っ気たっぷりに声色を変えるのを見て楽しんでいる。（特にUnchained Melodyが十八番らしい。）
　敵の選手たちも彼らに目を奪われている。今シーズン初め、レンジャースがマリナーズと対戦したときに、レンジャースの一塁手Rafael Palmeiroは日本人プレスに「ヤツが一塁ランナーになったときにこう言いたいんだけど、何て言ったらいいんだ？」とあらかじめ訊いておき、イチローがシングルヒットで一塁に生きると、「オマエ、イチバン。」と声をかけた。

A cedar-lined armoires are a piece of furniture for keeping your clothes in it,maybe more common word in the U.S. would be wardrobe.

Not to mention is sort of an odd phrase because Lee is talking about not talking about something and she goes ahead and gives a list of what's not necessary to mention.This phrase usually introduces things that are a kind of common sense or something that's of course.It's not necessary to mention it,but she is going to mention it anyway.
(7)be caught off guard
If you're caught off guard,you're unprepared or you're not ready for an unforeseen circumstance.

　実はシアトルにこの二人の日本人プレーヤーがいることは不思議なことではない。この街は、長期間にわたる日本との関係を持ち、この国において最も大きな日本人コミュニティの一つがあり、かつ環太平洋貿易の中心地でもある。この街の和食レストランやアジア系商店も有名だ。更には、イチローが日本のパ・リーグにおいて７年連続首位打者を獲得したときに在籍したオリックス・ブルーウェーブのホームタウン、神戸と姉妹都市でもある。
　その上、シアトル市民は日本企業のニンテンドーに大きな借りがある。当時のオーナー、Jeff Smulyanはタンパベイにチームを移転しようとしたが、ニンテンドーがチームに出資することでそれを阻止してくれたのだ。それ以降、ニンテンドーはチーム経営に参画し、チームはシアトルに残り、ファンはそのおかげで多くのGriffeyのホームランやRandy Johnsonの奪三振ショーを見ることができたのである。

　今夏、シアトルで、北米の都市においては未だかつてないほどに、日本の野球に注目が集まった。
　バスいっぱいに乗り込んだ日本からのツアー客たちがシアトルの球場のところまで訪れ、壁に描かれたイチロー・スズキ－彼は連中の国民的ヒーローなのだが－の前で写真を撮っている。球場ではファンが客席で日の丸の旗を振るのがそこかしこに見られ、球場のフェンスでは日本企業の広告の漢字が躍っている。フランネルのシャツは、51番のジャージにこのエリアの流行ファッションの座を取って代わられた。
　かつて市内のファンに６ドルでチケットを売るのにも四苦八苦したこのチームは、わざわざ4,800マイルの彼方から1,500ドルものお金を払ってマリナーズのホームゲームを見にやってくる日本人達に感謝している。何が彼らをそうさせているのか？少なくともそれがブルペンの後方で売られているスシロールでないことは確かだろう。
　その理由は二人の日本人スタープレーヤー－クローザーのカズヒロ・ササキと外野手のイチロー・スズキ（彼はファーストネームで通している。）の存在だ。シアトルでササキは二年目、イチローは一年目だが、既に二人はすばらしいプレーを見せ、興奮を巻き起こし、Ken Griffey JrやAlex Rodoriguezがいなくなったことを埋めるばかりか、アメリカのアスリートとして最高の名誉を勝ち得ている。－それは、彼ら自身をモデルにしたバブルヘッド人形がある、ということ。

The phrase "Is something or are something in or out?" always refers to if they're fashionable or not.If it's in,it's fashionable or hip or cool.If it's out,it's something your parents used or it's something only undesirable people maybe find attractive.I'm afraid that's beginning to describe me.

Geeks used to be a rather negative term for people who were not very fashionable or maybe not very socially graceful,but since the dot-com revolution and since so many people related to computers and that kind of science have become rich and their businesses have become very important,geek is becoming more of a good term,especially if you say computer geek. (3)on earth
When Ben adds the phrase on earth to the question,why on earth he adds a lot of emotion to the question.And he can't understand why this is an important thing,he feels like there is no answer on earth, no rational answer.
(4)a la year 2001
The phrase a la year 2001 is kind of an interesting.A la comes from French and it means in a manner of or in a following someone or something else's way of doing things.I think a lot of English speakers learn it with a la mode for pie a la mode,which means pie with ice cream on top.And I think the original French means the fashionable way to eat pie.
(5)all the bases covered
Someone who has all the bases covered,has everything under control.This is another one of the many phrases in English that come from sports,especially baseball.
(6)dressed to kill
If you're dressed to kill,you're dressed at a very high level,you're probably dressed up and everything is perfect.
(7)be not amused by
If you're not amused by something,it usually means you're irritated by it.It's even stronger than the phrase sounds.

　アマゾン・ジャパンでマリナーズ・ストアが開店になり、マリナーズグッズも購入できるようになりました。もちろんマリナーズのオフィシャルサイトで以前から購入することは可能だったわけですが、アマゾンで買えば注文から翌日で商品が届く、というのはやはりいいですね。私も早速、イチローが表紙になっている、今年シアトルで開催されたオールスターゲームのプログラムとオールスターゲームサイン（もちろんプリントですが）入りTシャツを購入しました。
　さて、プログラムをめくってみますと、もちろん地元シアトルの選手でファン投票でもトップの票数を獲得したイチローと佐々木（彼は監督推薦ですが）の記事が載っていました。また、オールスターには選ばれなかったものの、ノーヒットノーランを達成した野茂選手も他の選手と一緒にですが取り上げられています。明日からはイチロー・佐々木の特集記事とマリナーズ躍進の原動力となっていると言われる敏腕GMパット・ギリック氏の特集記事を私の下手くそな訳で、数日間にわたってここで紹介していきたいと思います。
(1)forget about
It might sound a little funny for a company to tell their employees to forget about something.The phrase is forget about,but the meaning is don't worry about something or don't bother with something.You can also say,forget it,in a same kind of a way to mean you're welcome or it was no problem helping you out.
(2)dress up
When you dress up,you wear nicer clothes than usual,usually for a special occasion, maybe to go to a nice restaurant or some sort of reception or maybe even the opera.
(3)follow suit
I think it's kind of interesting to use the phrase follow suit,when we're talking about business casual clothes anyway.But this suit is a little bit different.Follow suit comes from card games,and it means that one player plays the same suit of cards as the previous player has used.
(4)dictate
If you dictate something,you order it.That's one way to use the verb dictate.Another one which I think all language learners are very familiar with,is the kind of practice when the teacher reads you something in a foreign language and you're suppose to write it down exactly,word by word with correct spelling and all that.You should never call your teacher a dictator.
(5)dress code
The next word in the sentence maybe a little interesting is dress code.A code is a system of principles or rules.When I was in school in the U.S.,my high school and the earlier schools all had dress codes.I think dress codes started going out of style or became much more liberal than when I was little.I think that's started happening in the 60s,the later 60s.
(6)tell me about it
I guess the phrase tell me about it when I agree completely and I could have said exactly the same thing that the other person said.It has exactly the opposite meaning of the phrase itself.
