やさビジについて、平日にディクテできなかった分を日曜日の再放送で聞きました。まあ平日に、録音しておいて後で聞けばいいんですけど、なかなか忙しく、放送日と別の日にテープを聞くのはなかなか困難です。もうちょっと放送回数を増やしてくれないかなあ。

・is another；Araki-san adds is another to the end of his sentence this time,that's the other part of for one thing.
・short on space；sometimes that short on space is too small.You can also use short on with other kinds of things like short on time means you have to leave,you have no time.
・get fed up with；if you get fed up with,you had enough,you don't want to put up with the situation any more.
・suspension or outright expulsion；When I was little and in schools,sometimes if you knew some kids were bad,we used to wonder "Are they being suspended?" or "Are they being expelled?"
・school kids；the phrase school kids tends to refer to younger kids probably before high school.It depends on a little bit who is the speaker,though.
・keep an eye on；if you keep an eye on someone,you watch them and guard them and try to keep them safe from harm.
・let's get back to；is really useful phrase when you want to return a previous topic or if the conversation or discussion has strayed from the topic that you supposed to be discussing.
・sinking ships；in stead of talking about sinking ships you could say that the schools are floundering,it's a verb that basically mean the same thing.
・high schooler；here Ben calls high school students high schoolers,that's fairly common too.
・SAT；the SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test,it's a very common standarized test used in US,so the universities can compare teh difference of the students for how well they will probably do after they enter the university.
・language barriers；it might seem a little strange for Japanese people to think about language barrier in the schools,but since there are a lot of people from other countries in US and their children go to school,they often don't have a very high English ability especially at first and it can cause a lot troubles in class rooms.
ゴールデンウィークも初日。今日はゴルフに出かけてきました。結果は・・・。いつも思うんですけど、ゴルフってショートゲームが上手くないとなかなかスコアが縮まってこないですね。ドライバーの飛距離が伸びたところで、そこからグリーンにのせるまでに時間がかかってしまっては何の意味もないですもんね。プロのプレーを見ていて思いますが、彼らはアプローチが実に上手ですね。よくゴルフはティーグラウンドからではなく、カップからコースマネジメントをしろ、と言いますが、彼らはそれができる実力を持っていますよね。私の実力じゃ、逆算しても同じような気が・・・。
日本トイざらスが株式を公開したようです。まだトイざらスが日本に進出する前にシンガポール店に行ったことがあるのですが、その商品の豊富さと低価格に印象づけられました。今では日本にも多くの店舗があり、更に店舗数を伸ばしていくということです。おもちゃ屋というのは非常に商売が難しいんじゃないかなあと素人目には思いますが、やはりマーチャンダイジングで長けていれば、全国展開も可能なんですね。
先生が足りない、という今週のビニエットは社会的に非常に大きな問題だと思います。同様のことがアフリカでも起こっているという内容のテレビ番組がNHKであり、やはり収入が問題である、ということでした。日本に於いてどういう状況なのかは知りませんが、新卒にこだわらずいろいろなキャリアを持った人を採用した方がいいと思うんですけどねぇ。

・recipe；of course,is the guide for creating some kind of a dish,something you're going to eat,but fairly often in English people use recipe for anything that you're trying to create.They have regular process.
・higher expectation；if you have a higher expectation,you demand the best from the situation or the people.If you raise the bar,you raise the expectation.
・the children they touch；are the children they can influence or have contact with.
・decipline；has various meanings.In this case,it's teachers who can punish children,if necessary,teachers who can make sure the children learn how to act and when they should act correctly.
マイアミの漂流キューバ人少年についてはいろいろな意見がありますね。ネイティブは
「今回の事件については、その手法について問題がある、とする意見が多いけど、個人的にはアメリカ政府を支持するね。やはり基本的には子供は親と一緒に住むことが一番いい、という価値観を我々は持っている。今回は父親がいるのだから、親元に帰すのは当然でしょう。」
と話してくれました。何が彼にとって一番幸せなことなのか、という基準に立って考えると、本当に難しいですね。

セントラルでは阪神が巨人を抑えて一位、パシフィックは西武かと思いきや、日ハムが一位です。巨人・阪神はともかく、日ハムが一位というのは、ポテンシャルのあるチームということが評価されたのでしょうか。
各社、決算の概要が出てきた時期だと思いますが、今年の数字は非常に厳しいものとなっているんでしょうか。会計ビッグバンを目の前に控えて（一部は既に導入され）財務体質の強化が急がれますが、いずれにしても社内での変革が必要となってくるんでしょうね。

・veggies；is short for vegetable,I don't know,it sounds like you're fond of vegetable,you enjoy eating them.
・obese；another way to describe obese people is corpulent.
・run up；runs up means increases or raises something,people use run up together with a bill at a restaurant,for example,if you keep ordering more and more things,you slowly build up your bill on your table.
・cause or effect；there is one more word that kind of goes with a set that a lot of people don't think about that much,especially in complex relationship like what effects on your health.And that word is corelation,things that corelate,happen together,but they don't cause each other,there's probably an underline cause for both of them at the same time.
・overdo；means do it too much,do too excess.There are a few other words using over as a pre-effect to a verb to mean doing things excess,overeat is very common,overcompensate is another common verb with over.
・brisk；is a kind of intersting word.It has connotations of cool and sharp and clean,briskwalking,it does mean walk rapidly,but it really brings up the images of walking out in cool morning air.
・commercial；often in Japan,people call commercials CMs,but that doesn't work in US.You have to say commecial to mean advertising on TV.
・take a minute；if you take a minute,you pose,you wait for a moment,you don't act without thinking.
・Whoa；is the word used to tell your horse to stop in English.I didn't know that,don't mix up Whoa with WOW,that sounds exclamation of surprise.
・get back on track；you get back on track,you return to the path on the road that you meant to take.
・fat chance；people often say fat chance,when they think something is impossible.There is a kind of humorous phrase that people use occasionary,they say when pigs fly.
・Been there,done that.；I was gonna say,you have to be a little bit carefully using this phrase,everyone,Araki-san is talking to know him very well,so they want to get angry at him,but sometimes this phrase makes you sound very bored,but also very superior.
聞き上手になるということは難しいです。今日テレビ番組で「聞き上手はビジネスになる。」ということをやっていました。「コーチ」という職業をしている人が日本には100人程度いて、仕事の内容は電話で人の話を聞く、ということです。聞き上手になるテクニックとして「反復法」、つまり相手の言ったことをおうむ返しにする、というものがある、ということを以前学んだことがあるんですが、見ていたところではそのテクニックを使っていたようですね。
話の聞き方で日米の違いがあって、日本人は一応相手の説明や話を一通り聞いてから、自分の意見を話す、ということをどこかで聞いたことがありますが、そういう意味では日本人の話の聞き方がアメリカ人化している、ってことなんでしょうね
死刑存廃論争が活発におこなわれていますが、間違えやすいのは「無期懲役」の「無期」が世間一般で言う「無期限」ではないということだと思います。言い替えれば、日本には「終身刑」はないということになります。（結果的に「無期」が「終身刑」になる、という可能性はありますが）詳しくはわかりませんが、「無期懲役」となった囚人の多くが１０年程度で出所になるようです。
ナビスコカップでレギュラー選手を出場させなかったとして、アビスパが制裁金を課せられるそうです。ピッコリ監督は「その時点でのベストメンバーだ。」と主張したようですが、客観的に考えて、Ｊリーグの方を重視した、ということは言えるのではないか、と思います。
この問題は難しいですね。チーム側の事情もわかりますが、プロである以上その向こう側に観客がいるわけで、私だったらやはりそのチームの「ベストメンバー」を見たいですし。それがナビスコカップの観客数にも反映しているのかも。ただナビスコカップでは「ニューヒーロー賞」という賞があって、新人発掘の意味もあるんだろうしなあ。

・chubby；is another adjective describing different ways people are fat.Plump tends to be used for women and stout for men.Chubby is pleasingly a little bit fat in the case of children.It is occasionary used for adults,but it always has that connotation of child or children with it.
・skin and bones；the phrase skin and bones are often used to describe someone who is far too thin,ofcourse you've got some muscle underneath of skin or somewhere,but they're so thin they look sick,just skin and bones.
ROE（Return of Equity）を重視する企業が増えている中で、三菱重工が経営指標に投下資本利益率を導入したようです。※投下資本利益率=税引き後営業利益／（有利子負債＋株主資本）
これによって調達資金がどの程度効率的に使われているかが示され、財務体質のチェックができるわけですね。つまり、この指標を改善するためには、利益↑か有利子負債↓が必要なわけで、売上を拡大するために借金を重ねていく、ということをやめようということだと思います。キャッシュフロー経営時代には当然重視する指標であると考えます。
今日新幹線のホームへ上がり歩いていると、ちょうど新幹線が到着しドアが開きました。指定席がその車両ではないので、通り過ぎようとした時、中から袈裟を着た人が出てきました。その人物はなんと、ダライラマ１４世！あれぇ？何で日本にいるの？と思ったら、仏教界の招きで講演に来日したそうなんです。（後で新聞で確認。）背は175cmくらいで、出迎えた関係者と挨拶をしていましたが、その集団に巻き込まれた？私はしばらく前に歩けなくなってしまいました。（降りたホームでずっと挨拶していたため）でも私なんかが２ｍくらいの距離にずっといていいんだろうか？とふと思ってしまいました。
私もいろいろな有名人を見ましたが、世界的に有名な人物はアキノ元大統領に続いて二人目です。次は誰を見れるんだろうか・・・。
日経平均が20,000円を超え、景気も良くなり始めたかな、と思ったら、今日の前場の終値が18,683円と一気に下がりました。一時は1,800円を超す下げだったようで、かなりの下落率です。アメリカの株価急落やＧ７の共同声明などの要因があった、と専門家は分析していますが、それにしても厳しいですねぇ。当面はNY市場の動向を見守るしかないのでしょうか。
今日は小笠・掛川フルマラソン大会の日だったのですが、エントリーしたにも関わらず、出走しませんでした。忙しさを理由にして、練習やジム通いをしなかったので、大事をとって観戦・応援チームにまわりました。昨年のこの大会は一週間前から練習を開始する、という無謀なことをしましたが、何とか時間内に完走しました。しかし今回は「走る」元気すらありませんでした。
今シーズンは結局一回も大会に出場できませんでしたが、夢のNYシティマラソンに向け、今年の冬になったらまた走ろうと思っています。（←本当かぁ？）
アビスパ福岡がＪリーグのために主力を温存し、ナビスコカップに若手中心のメンバーを出場させ、問題となっているようです。今日のゲームに出場した選手は、水曜日のナビスコカップには出ていません。
これには二つの問題があるのではないでしょうか。まず第一点は、日程の問題、一週間のうちにリーグ戦とカップ戦の両方をこなさなければならないということ、第二点はナビスコカップの位置づけの問題、です。
アビスパ福岡は二年連続してＪ２落ちの危機にさらされました。つまりある意味、リーグ戦の一試合一試合の重要さを身にしみて理解していることでしょう。チームがＪ２落ちしてしまうと、予算や選手の確保の点で苦しくなることは見えており、是が非でもＪ１圏内を死守してくるのは当然でしょう。
その点、はたしてナビスコカップはどうでしょうか？確かにＪリーグ、天皇杯に次いで、三つ目のタイトルではありますが、注目度においてかなり下がると言わざるをえません。こうした余裕のない状況でアビスパがリーグ戦を犠牲にしても取りにいくべきタイトルでしょうか？もちろんプロとして入場料を取ってゲームをしているのですから、そのチームのベストパフォーマンスを見せるべきなのですが・・・。
放送事業と通信事業の違いは何か？−放送事業は不特定多数が見る（聞く）ことを前提にし、通信事業は特定の人に情報を伝えることを目的としてきた、と言えるとすれば、インターネットはこの境界線をあいまいにしたと思います。
更につっこんで、公共放送とは何かということになれば、全国民に均質な情報をあまねく与える、ということになるのでしょうが、今日の日経によればBBCはデジタル放送やネットで新サービスを検討し、それには商行為を伴うそうで、「公共放送として絶滅の道をたどるか、それ以外の道を選ぶか」という局面に立っているようです。
情報の受け手が、好みの情報やサービスを選び取るこの時代に、BBCまでもがその立場を問われているんですね。
合併を目指す浦和・大宮・与野市３市の新市名選考問題で合併協議会がまとまらなかったようです。「さいたま市」を推す浦和・与野両市と「大宮市」を主張する大宮市が対立しているとのこと。埼玉県の県庁所在地は浦和ですが、新幹線の駅は大宮ですよね。市の名前が消える、ということに関しては抵抗感がある市民と無関心な市民といると思いますが、どうでしょうか。
私はまだ上越新幹線が大宮発だった頃に大宮へ乗り継ぎに一度行ったことがあるだけで、大宮も浦和も残念ながら一度も駅から出たことがありません。でも「浦和」や「大宮」の名前が消えるのはちょっと寂しい感じがします。

・put up with；if you put up with something,you bear it,you don't try to change it,you accept it,even though it's not something good.
・you can't perform.；Araki-san says you can't perform,he doesn't mean you can't try.This phrase means that you can't perform well or you can't perform at your peak,you can't do a good job.
・false pretenses；are lies.If somebody says something that's not true about you,they make allegations or claims that aren't true.

とネイティブの知り合いが教えてくれました。いやあ、両方できないんですけど、Dodgersでは働いてみたいなあ。実際にMLBに限らずアメリカのプロチームで働いている日本人の方はいらっしゃると思いますが、私の知っている範囲では日刊スポーツ誌上にコラムを連載していた、NBAニュージャージーネッツの渉外担当の方がいます。もちろん現在も勤務されているかどうかは知りませんが。

・shove；push and shove have pretty much the same meaning,I think push is more general.You can use it in almost any situation.Shove tends to connotations of rudeness,extra force or more force than necessary.
・case closed；is often used to say the end,finished,I won't discuss it any more,even if other people envolved in the case want to continue.
スティーブン・キング氏（彼の作品で有名なのは映画にもなった「ミザリー」。知り合いのネイティブによればTVドラマだった「IT」も有名だそうです。）の最新作「Riding the bullet」が２＄50¢でインターネット上のみで、ダウンロード販売され、発売48時間で50万件というダウンロード購入を記録したようです。容量は0.3メガバイト、語数で１万６千語、ダウンロードは数秒で完了する、ということですが、それにしてもすごい販売量ですね。今までもEブックビジネスはあったようですが、キング氏ほどの人気作家がオンラインでしか新作を発表しないということは初めてのことだそうです。出版元では「キング氏のこの作品は短編のため一冊の本にはならなかったもの。また他の短編とあわせて発表するにしても、印刷・出版まで一年かかってしまう。」とキング氏のソフトとしての価値だけでなく、印刷出版におけるEブックの魅力もこの販売に寄与したことをコメントしています。こうしたことから、日本においてもEブックビジネスの発展は容易に想像され、人気作家の作品もEブックで販売されることが普通になるかもしれません。

私が学生の頃のことですから、もう１５年も前になりますが、ミュージカルCATSを劇団四季がロングラン公演していました。日本であれだけロングラン公演したミュージカルはCATSが初めてのことだったと思いますが、今では考えられないくらいに、私にとっては新鮮なことでした。鳳蘭さんともう１人の女優の方（すみません。名前忘れちゃいました。）とのダブルキャストで、あのあまりにも有名なテーマ曲「Memory」が印象に残っています。
ここ数年は「オペラ座の怪人」「ライオンキング」など劇団四季がロングラン公演をするのが普通になりましたが、私にとってのミュージカル入学はあのCATSであることは言うまでもありません。なんてことを今日テレビ番組で本田美奈子さんがMemoryを歌っているのを聴いて思いました。

ブッシュ対ゴアのアメリカ大統領選がいよいよ始まろうとしています。ブッシュについてネイティブの友人が興味深いことを話してくれました。
「ブッシュについては、ヨーロッパの人々がネガティブなイメージを持っている。彼はテキサス時代に、capital punishmentの存続を支持していた。これに対してはヨーロッパの多くのCatholicが不快感を示している。我々アメリカに対してヨーロッパ人がそうした批判をするのはとてもシニカルなことだと思う。capital punishmentやabuseなどアメリカの問題点と彼らが指摘するのは、以前ヨーロッパで起こっていた現象であって、アメリカ特有のものではない。個人的には私はCatholicであるが、capital punishmentには賛成である。capital punishmentに値する犯罪をした人間を自分たちの税金でfeedするのは納得がいかない。被害者保護の観点からも賛成だ。」
死刑廃止論については日本においても法曹界で議論がおこなわれていますが、非常に難しい問題だと思います。ゴア氏がこれについてどういう攻撃をブッシュ氏にするのか、興味が持たれます。

・in the media；refers to mass communication,things like radio,TV,newspaper or magazines.
・civic；is an adjective that usually refers to cities.There is another qword municipal that also refers to cities generally,but more specifically it's usually used for city things related to the city's government.
・spot-on；means exactly,correct,although putting two words together may be too much.
・facade；if you look in the text,facade is spelled just with a C and in English usually a C followed by A has hard sound more like fa[kar]d,or fa[kei]d,but this word comes from French originally and C was written a little bit differently,it's a slightly different letter.But that's been dropped now in English,people spell it with a C,but still pronounce it more like the French style,facade.
・streetscape；is a kind of interesting word,it's not in my dictionary,but it's fairly easy for English speakers to understand,you would prpbably pick it up too,if you know landscape.A landscape is usually a beatiful view of the country,so if you take that and think about teh city,city has streets more than country panoramas.So putting streetscape together means looking at the city as a kind of beatiful view.

マリナーズの佐々木投手が二試合続けてセーブポイントを挙げたようですね。しかもヤンキースからというのがすばらしいですよね。今年はさすがのヤンキースもそうそう易々とは勝てなくなるかもしれません。ただ、さすがにALEASTでは優勝間違いなしでしょうが・・・。（その先はどうでしょ？）
この前のMLB日本開幕戦で先着30,000名（二日間で）にFLEER社の記念シート（ベースボールカードのシート）が無料で配られまして私もゲットしたんですが、そのカードのメンバーの中にマグワイアがいなかったんですね。聞きましたら、彼はそのカード会社と契約していないからなんだそうです。ソーサ、ピアザ、チッパ・ージョーンズ、ペドロ・マルチネス、カル・リプケンJrなど蒼々たるメンバーの中に彼がいないと何か変ですね。それにしても来年は日本でMLB開幕戦が行われないことが決定したようで、非常に残念です。
小渕前首相の健康状態が心配されますが、知り合いのネイティブは非常に残念がっていました。

シアトルマリナーズの佐々木投手がまずは無難な投球をしたようです。非常にうれしいのは、聞く範囲ではシアトルで佐々木投手が歓迎されていることです。その歓声がブーイングに変わるかどうかは佐々木投手のプレーにかかっていると言えそうですが、彼のことですからやってくれるでしょう。私も佐々木投手のピッチング（もちろんベイスターズ時代）はありますが、たまたまその時はホームランを打たれてしまいました。しかし、ボール自体がすばらしかったことは言うまでもなく、日本でのピッチングがMLBでも再現できれば、ALWESTでのマリナーズの優勝に貢献できることでしょう。

どういったトレーニングを受けても、その能力を持続するということはその取得と同じくらい難しいことだと思います。しかし一方では、経験というものがトレーニングの効果の持続について寄与しているとも言えるでしょう。大切なのはトレーニングにおいていい成績を収めることではなく、その成果を実社会の中で発揮することである、と思いますから、経験から学ぶということは同時にトレーニングの実社会への還元があったということも言えそうです。

先日のMLB日本開幕戦に続き、日本のプロ野球も開幕しました。なかなか忙しくて、プロ野球ニュースで結果を確認することくらいしかできないのですが、なかなか盛り上がっているようですね。
MLB開幕戦の感想は先にも述べましたが、やはり基本的にプレーする方も観客も「野球を楽しんでいる」という印象が強いですね。特にともすれば安全をとりがちな日本のプロ野球に比べ、MLBはリスクテイキングな野球をすることによって、観客を楽しませてくれているような気がします。一つでも先の塁へ、というチャレンジとそれを阻もうとする高いレベルのディフェンス、それがMLBの醍醐味ではないでしょうか。
宮城大学に事業構想学部という新しい発想の学部があるそうです。ここの教授でよくテレビで見かけるのは若手の糸瀬教授ですが、この学部の存在を知ったのは、昨年同じ学部の天明教授のセミナーを聞きに行った時です。この時のセミナーはキャッシュフロー経営に関してのものだったのですが、非常にわかりやすく、また興味の沸くものでした。
先日会計ビッグバンに関して議論する番組がNHKで放送されており、それに糸瀬教授が出席していました。彼曰く、「連結会計が重視されることによって、人事制度に影響が最も大きく出るだろう。」とのこと。どういうことかというと、今までは親会社の経営上の矛盾を子会社に転嫁してきた、つまり必要利益の確保に関してばかりでなく、人事面でも出向制度によって子会社に人員を押しつけてきた手法が通用しなくなる。」ということでした。連結重視によって、子会社も必要利益を確保することが命題となった今、どういうやり方でこれを乗り切るかどうか、コングロマリット全体で考える必要がありますね。
先週、メジャーリーグ日本開幕戦「シカゴカブス VS ＮＹメッツ」を観戦しました。私が見に行ったのは第二戦の方で、延長戦までもつれ込み、メッツの代打ホームランが出た回が終わったところで引き上げましたが、時間はもう２３時になっていたと思います。
東儀さんの篳篥の国歌演奏やセブンイニングスストレッチなどゲーム以外の部分でも楽しめました。三塁側に座っていたのですが、ＮＹメッツのファン３人（アメリカ人）が三塁側一階スタンドをメッツのボードを持って歩き回り「Let's go Mets！」と叫び、メッツの応援を強要？していましたが、それもおもしろかったです。何でも彼らはメッツのシーズンシートをずっと確保している筋金入りの熱狂的メッツファンで、いてもたってもいられず日本まで来てしまったとか。たまたま私の右側にカブスのキャップを被った親子が座っており、彼らが「Let's go Mets！」と盛り上げていたところ、子供の方が「Suck Mets！」と言い返し、その時の彼らの表情といったらなかったですね。
ゲームでもMetsオルドニエスのエラーという珍しいものを見たり、リッキーヘンダーソンの盗塁も見ることができました。（私が生でリッキーの盗塁を見られるとは！）ソーサやピアザのホームランも見たかったんですが、これは残念ながら見られませんでした。
日本のプロ野球で応援団の音がかなり大きいのに慣れているので、今回のMLBの雰囲気はかなり違いましたが、いいプレーが出たり、ゲームが盛りあがってくると自然に拍手や歓声が沸き上がりました。特に最高潮だったのはチャンスの時にソーサが敬遠された時のブーイングでした。やはり自然に観客がゲームへ入っていけたんだと思います。
人それぞれ野球の楽しみ方も違うから、何とも言えませんが、私はMLBの雰囲気の方が好きですね。一つ一つのプレーを楽しむ、セブンイニングスストレッチでTake me out to the ball gameを歌う、誰にも強請されることなく自然に出る歓声や拍手、野球場は野球道場ではなく、ボールパークだということを知ったような気がします。
さて今日から新年度です。がんばっていきましょう。

今日は中山競馬場に行きましたが、本当に暖かく、芝生席でくつろぐ方々が大勢いました。中にはＴシャツの人もいるくらいでした。それにしても競馬場は以前のイメージを払拭して、親子連れやデートを楽しむカップルが大勢見かけられるようになりました。中山競馬場も改装してから何年にもなりますが、非常にきれいだと思います。府中も若干改装しましたが、やはりきれいさでは中山に軍配が上がるでしょう。
私は海外の競馬場には行ったことがないのですが、ケンタッキーダービーと凱旋門賞を観戦にケンタッキーとロンシャンには是非行ってみたいです。やはり欧米と日本では競馬に関する歴史が違いますから、雰囲気も全然異なることでしょう。その違いを是非感じてみたいですね。
