　以前、この日記でもディーク大学がネットを使った講座を開講していることを書きましたが、欧米の大学のコンテンツ提供はネット上だけにとどまらないようです。
　シンガポールでは、シンガポール大学に隣接する地区を「サイエンス・ハブ」として整備しており、ここに世界でもトップクラスの教育機関１０校を誘致する計画のもと、既にフランスのビジネススクールINSEADやシカゴ大学が2000年にビジネススクールを開設するそうです。また、シンガポール大学の一角では、USで医療・バイオ研究でトップクラスのJohns Hopkins Universityが医療関連の共同研究と医療教育活動にあたっているんだそうです。
　日本とシンガポールでは置かれた状況も違いますし、国勢も文化も異なりますので、このことだけを取り上げてどうのこうの言うのは早計だと思います。ただ気になるのは、こうした外国教育機関の直接的進出はその国自体の文化の根幹にもかかわることだということで、もっと慎重に考えた方がいいのかなと思います。

I think the verb form of lunch sounds almost a little bit pretentious to many North American speakers.Sometimes they call women who come from wealthy families and that ladies who lunch.
(4)real nice people
You may have noticed he said real nice people instead of really nice people,which is actually the correct form.Many people speak this way,however.They only use the adjective form instead of the adverbial form.It's sometimes used with good,also.
(5)What do you do now?
A very common question to find out about someone's work.
(6)finished high school
This is a very common way to mention it,Did you finish high school?,things like that.
(7)make ends meet
When you make ends meet,you find a way somehow to live your life or carry out your life,even though you don't really quite have enough money.
(8)unemployment check
And in the US people talk about going on unemployment or cashing unemployment checks.Don't usually talk about unemployment insurance unless you have a private policy.
(9)hot
Things that are hot are strong and exciting. (10)get by
I get by,is a very common phrase for somehow I manage,which is another phrase you could use.I manage,I make do,I get by.
(11)day by day
Day by day is one of those phrases in English that mean little by little,one day at a time.He doesn't look forward far into the future planning a great time for himself.He lives one day at a time.
(12)loose community
I think a loose community means they probably recognize each other,talk to each other sometimes,maybe even help each other now and then,but they don't see each other all the time.They're not always managing each other.
(13)get beaten up
To be beaten up or get beaten up means somebody hits you with their hands or maybe some weapon,maybe they kick you.

　今年のプロ野球オールスターゲームはセントラルの３勝（しかも２勝は圧勝）になりました。これはパリーグにとって軽く考えてはいけないことでしょう。
　確かに昔よりはパリーグは人気が出てきたと思います。昔はCSもBSもありませんでしたから、パリーグの通常の試合をテレビで見ることはなく、オールスターもしくは日本シリーズで、「おお、南海の藤原ってもみあげがすごいなあ。」とか「近鉄の石渡ってなんでユニホームのベルトの位置が高いんだろう？」とか思ったくらいでした。しかし、清原の西武入団や西武黄金期の強さに始まり、野茂の登場、そしてイチローの活躍、松坂の怪物ぶりとむしろ話題性ではセリーグに迫ってきていると思います。
　パリーグには巨人という圧倒的人気と資金力を誇るチームがなく、また地上波での放送も相変わらず少ないため経営は厳しいと思いますが、そうであるが故に私個人としては日本のプロ野球の新しい経営スタイルを見せてくれるものと期待しています。しかし現実的にはここ数年でリーグを代表する投手、伊良部、星野、工藤、小宮山らがセリーグ（メジャー）に流出しています。そう言えばメジャーで活躍しているセリーグ出身の投手は（木田は帰って来ちゃったので）佐々木だけなんですね。
　その意味でも残念なのはオールスターの結果です。ゲームを見た多くの人「パリーグってレベルが低いんじゃないか？」と思ったんじゃないでしょうか。だから、オールスター明けに早速イチローが活躍したり、松坂があわやノーヒットノーランのピッチングをしても「パリーグだから」というフレーズがついてまわってしまうのでは？オールスターは確かにお祭りだけど、単なるお祭りではないんじゃないでしょうか。そういう気持ちがパリーグのベンチにあったかどうか・・・。

2000/7/29

　今月の最初の方で、ある企業のアナリスト説明会に参加し、その説明会にNHKのカメラが入っていたことをお話ししましたが、今夜22:00からその模様がNHK・BS１「BSマネーワールド」で放送されました。
　番組の（前半の）具体的内容は東急とJR東日本を取り上げ、連結経営主体の時代に、鉄道を主体にコングロマリットを形成している鉄道会社が、株主の要求に対してどういう方向で応えようとしているのか？ということでした。番組では取り上げられていませんでしたが、アナリスト説明会の前にCATV事業においてその企業とソニーが提携した、というニュースがリリースされたということもあり、アナリストからの多くの質問もIT関連が中心でした。しかし、今晩放送されたように、経営全般を見たときには関連各社有利子負債をどうするのか、また連結改善のスピードはどうなのか、経営責任は明確化されているのかという点が投資家にとって明らかにされるべきであり（とアナ「シロート」の私は思う）、またそのベクトルの中に成長分野への投資計画があるべきで、番組で解説していた野村のアナリストの方（鉄道会社関係のアナリストでは有名な方）の当日の質問もそうしたものでした。
　アナリストの質問に対しては、社長（公認会計士資格保持）が主に回答していましたが、今後はIR担当者だけでなくこうして経営トップがはっきりと外部に対して経営方針を明らかにすべきだと思います。このような説明会が各社で催されてほしいし、経営者もそういう姿勢をみせてほしいですね。執行役員制度が採用されるようになって、形式的になっていた取締役会を活性化させていくように、形式化された株主総会に替わるものを開催するようになっていけばいいと思います。

2000/7/28

　以前、何年か前に英語に興味を持ち始めた頃、「アメリカ人＝Yankee」だと思い、今では友人のアメリカ人(Texan)に話をする時「アメリカ人は～」という意味で「Yankee are」としゃべっていました。最初は何とも言わなかったのですが、何回か会って話をするようになると、「俺はYankeeじゃないよ。」と言われました。その時はその理由がよくわからなかったんですけど、それ以来Yankeeという言葉を使うのはやめました。
　それで昨日、改めて彼以外の知り合いのアメリカ人にその理由をたずねたところ、「Yankee」というのはMason-Dixon Lineよりも北側、つまりThe Civil Warの時の北部側の人間を指す、ということでした。よって南部出身である彼はYankeeではない、ということになるそうです。
　もう一つ教えてもらったのは「Carpetbagger」です。これはThe Civil Warの際に、南部で奴隷として苦しんでいた黒人たちの一部が、北部へ逃げれば自由になれると考え、Mason-Dixon Lineを渡って来た時に、自分たちの荷物をcarpetに包んできたことがこの言葉の起源で、北部側へ逃げることができた黒人たちは、Safe Houseで匿われ、西部へ逃がされていったということです。これが「渡り者」という意味から今では転じて、自分の出身地でないところで選出される(されようとする)政治家のことを指し、ヒラリー・クリントンはまさにCarpetbaggerの典型なのだそうです。　

2000/7/27

　沖縄サミットが終了しました。今回のサミットに関してのニュースは残念ながら忙しく見ることができなかったので、友人のネイティブに印象を聞いてみました。
・(これは個人的意見との前置きで）クリントン大統領が沖縄の米軍を削減するような発言をしていたが、普通のアメリカ人であればそれはできないことであることがわかっている。沖縄の米軍は太平洋の戦略上、きわめて重要であると言わざるを得ない。
・沖縄県民に対する米軍の一部兵士の行為については極めて問題がある。一種のabuseではないのか。米軍側で具体的な策を早急に講じるべきだ。今の状態はアメリカ国民にとっても日本国民にとっても不幸である。
・安室奈美恵は日本を代表する歌手である。しかし各国首脳は彼女が歌を歌っている間に、他の人とおしゃべりをしていた。極めて失礼な態度であると思うし、日本に住んでいる外国人として非常に残念だ。
(1)way ahead
Way ahead is a phrase that you can use in English to mean follow in the future like Hiromi Araki does here. But you can also use it to mean follow in the front,physically for location.
(2)bark an order
This is kind of an interesting sentence.If a CEO barks an order,it means he gives an order in a loud,sharp kind of a voice,almost the kind of a sound that a dog makes when it's barking.
(3)sit back
And then after the CEO barks an order,Araki-san talks about sitting back.Sitting back usually means relaxing.If you're paying attention and working,you tend to sit up straight at attention,maybe even on the edge of your seat.If you sit back,you're relaxing.
(4)You've got something there.
You've got something there is a phrase that's often used to say you're right,that's a good idea,that's an important point.
(5) keep the ball rolling
Don't let things stop.Make sure the action continues until you've reached your goal.
(6)stick to commitments
This time Ben Leonard mentions sticking to commitments.In the vignette on Wednesday,we heard delivering on commitments.This is pretty much the same thing,a little more not changing your commitments.
(7)commitment
I think,in English,promise is a verbal kind of a thing.And I think commitments sound deeper, maybe even beyond words.

　今朝の中探で、マクドナルドの好調ぶりがリポートされました。平日のハンバーガーとチーズバーガーの半額販売は、安サラリーマンの私にとってはありがたく、しばしば利用しています。
　そのレポートによりますと、外食産業の売上は20ケ月連続で前年比を下回っているのだそうです。そうした状況の中、マクドナルドは一人勝ちの状態で、それもこの低価格販売によるところが大きいそうです。その効果は大量販売とセット販売によってもたらされているのだとか。番組の中で話されていたことなのですが、ハンバーガーの原価率がだいたい30％くらいでこれが半額販売によって60％に上がっても、原価率20％のコーラSサイズや原価率25％のポテトの売上が伸びれば十分ペイする、ということです。実際、藤田社長が「２倍売れれば結果はでる。」ということで始めた「平日半額」によって売上が３倍に伸びたとレポートされていました。
　これに対抗して、吉野家が特盛を割引したり、らんぷ亭でテイクアウトの割引をしたり、すかいらーくで新形態の店を小金井に出店したりしているようです。結局「安ければ売れる」ということなんでしょうか。

If you push the button and zap something,it sounds like you're using electricity to make something happen.In slung in US,people call microwave oven zappers.They use the electricity to get the result.It can mean microwave oven.As a verb,it can mean prepare your food in microwave oven like,Oh,I don't have any time and zap the dinner.

If you're under heavy fire,you've been criticized or attacked.
(6)store
In the US,people tend to use the word store instead of shop,when they're talking about place to buy consumer goods.
(6)thin the ranks
Thin the ranks is a phrase often used to mean get rid of some poeple.Ranks comes from military,meaning to regular soldiers.So if you thin the ranks,you get rid of some people.
(7)crawl up the walls
If you're crawling up the walls,you're frustrated.You're going crazy,you can't be calm and quiet,because you're so impatient.
(8)deliver on their commitments
You can fulfil your commitments or you can deliver on your commitments.

　先日、中央林間駅で高校生風の男数人が、目の不自由な男性を襲い、金銭や障害者手帳を奪うという事件が発生したというニュースを聞きました。
　これについてアメリカ人の友人に感想を聞いてみました。すると次のようなことを言っていました。
・最近の日本の社会はアメリカ社会に非常に似てきている。ただ日本ではこうした少年犯罪やchild abuseが大きなニュースとして取り上げられるが、アメリカではこうした犯罪が多く、よほど大きな事件以外は取り扱いが小さい。
・残念ながらアメリカにおいては人種差別からこうした(街頭で若者が他の若者を襲うといった)事件が起こることがある。個人的な意見だが、日本では一般的に「他と同じように」あることがいいとされているようだ。それがこの事件に限らず、他のいじめによる事件の原因となっているのではないか。
　しかし、障害者に手を出すとは・・・。
(1)pretext
A pretext is a reason,and it's the reason used for some purpose.But it's not always the main reason for why you have your purpose.Maybe you don't like someone. So you try to find something wrong that they've done so you can get rid of them.That thing that they've done wrong is the pretext.

Renoir is talking about Ted Begley's bad behavior and how it came back to do bad things to him.

You might have noticed that Camille Renoir said "gee-o-teen" instead of "gil-o-teen."I think her pronunciation is closer to the original French.And in English you can use either one.
(4)reign of terror
I think the guillotine and the reign of terror both come from around the same time in France.
(5)prop
Renoir also calls the guillotine a prop.A prop is something that you use in a play on stage.Of course,the actors are the focus of what happens on a stage,but things that they use are called props.
(6)get his head cut off
There's "got his head cut off."I think it's following from the guillotine metaphor that Renoir started using.He probably just lost his job.
(7)fend off
If you fend something off,you keep it off,you avoid it,you stop it from coming close to you and affecting you.
(8)Lady Luck
Lady Luck is a phrase people often use just to mean luck.They personify luck.
(9)bail someone out
If you bail someone out,it means you get them out of jail.If they haven't done anything really serious, usually you can pay some money to guarantee that they'll go back to court when their case comes up.That's bailing someone out.It's also used just to mean helping someone when they really need it.
Also bail alone as a verb means get the water out of a sinking boat.You use a bucket and throw the water out back into the lake or the ocean.That's also called bail.

　デリバティブの用語は英語が多いのですが、その英語の組み合わせ方もなかなかおもしろいものがあります。
　その中でも今日は、バミューダオプション Bermuda Option を取り上げてみたいと思います。まず基礎中の基礎知識としてですが、オプション取引のoptionとは一般的に取引をおこなう「権利」のことを意味します。取引の当事者のどちらか一方がこの権利のみをもつ事ができ、他方の当事者は取引を行う義務のみをもちます。ただし、この状態では当事者同士の関係はアンバランスですから、権利者(オプションの買い手)はプレミアムを取引当初に支払うことになります。
　このオプションには①契約当初にあらかじめ設定された将来の唯一の期日にのみ権利を行使できる「ヨーロピアン・タイプ・オプション」②将来の一定期間中であればいつでも権利を行使できる「アメリカン・タイプ・オプション」とがあります(その他、エイジアン・タイプもあります)が、これに対し、この二者の中間的なオプション、つまりオプション期間中に複数の期日を設定し、この期日のいずれかにおいてのみ権利を行使できる「バミューダオプション」があります。これは地理上、バミューダ諸島がアメリカとヨーロッパの中間に位置することとかけあわせて名づけられています。

When you're asking people about their opinions,becareful to ask what they think,not how they think like you do in Japanese.
(2)the decline and fall
That one looks like how the Third Reich in Germany became powerful and lost the power.I think decline and fall is used in English a lot,because there is a history book called the decline and fall of the Roman Empire,the writer Edward Given who is British,this book is from the 1780,I think,he was in Rome and looking at the ruins and got the idea to write about how such a great empire managed to disappear and he was focusing on the downfall of the Roman empire.And nowadays English people use this a lot to talk about someone or something that had been great,it's often hard to understand why they don't continue.
(3)top dog
Sometimes in English,when you talk about a leader or the strong leader,you can call them the top dog.It doesn't just mean a boss or a leader.It sounds like a tough and strong commanding leader.
(4)in ashes
Something that's in ashes has burned and died.It's completely destroyed.The former form even whatever you're talking about has disappeared.
(5)take the helm
If you take the helm,you take charge or you take control.The helm is where the captain stays on the ship to guide it to the right direction.
(6)bounced out
Bounced out means fired.There are a couple of other phrases with out,a couple of other verbs with out.You can used pushed out,forced out,words like that,all mean fired.
(7)golden parachute
A golden parachute is the set of package of retirement pays or retirement benefits that high level exectives get when they leave the company,no matter what their records-wise.
(8)hotshot
A hotshot is somebody with a good ability,high skills who likes to show them off.
(9)shot to shreds
Something that's been shot to shreds has been ruined.If you think of taking a gun and shooting at something a kind of target practice,foe example,you make a lot of holes and the target and just get ripped up.It gets tones of shreds.
(10)do someone in
Here Ben uses the phrase do someone in to talk about ruining his chances to talk about firing him,getting rid of him.If you do someone in in other circumstances,it could mean you've killed him.
(11)vibes
Vibes is the word that I think became fairly popular in 60s,probably meaning atmosphere or feeling.It comes from vibrations.

　ネットの発達にともなって、世の中が「直結的」になったと思います。e-commerceの発達によるB TO C市場や、マスメディアというフィルターを通さない情報提供、いろいろな知識を得るのに本に替わって疑問に答えてくれるWEB SITE、社内LANによるrank-and-fileと上位職種者の情報交換、個人から世界へdirectにコミュニケーションできるe-mailなど数え始めたらキリがありません。
　商売においても、組織においても、またコミュニケーションにおいてもフィルターがなくなることで、個人レベルで判断力を要求されるシーンがどんどん多くなるでしょうね。

2000/7/22

　シドニーオリンピックの野球日本代表に、ヤクルトの古田選手は参加しないことになりました。非常に残念です。これで、日本チームの戦力ダウンは免れません。野球を少しでもやったことのある人なら、レベルが上がるにつれ、いかにキャッチャーというポジションが大切かということをご存じかと思います。古田選手はバッティングもすばらしいですから、どうしてもそちらの方へ目がいきがちですが、やはりそのインサイドワークとキャッチング、そしてキャプテンシーは他の選手ではなかなか真似ができないと思います。松坂、黒木というプロでもオールジャパンのピッチャーの信頼に足るキャッチャーがアマにいるでしょうか？
　今回の原因はやはりコミッショナーがその責任を放棄したことにあるでしょう。ヤクルト球団の社長にしてみればペナントレースに古田は欠かせない、だから出せない、と言うのは当たり前でしょう。古田問題は非常に難しい問題ですから、当事者に委ねてしまっていい結果が出るでしょうか？本来、コミッショナーは日本のプロ野球、ひいては日本の野球ににとって何がいいのかを考えるべきではないでしょうか？こういうコミッショナーではセパ交流戦すら実現するはずもありません。
　コミッショナーが名誉職、というのはもうやめてほしいです。リーダーがリーダーたる所以は、リーダーシップを発揮するところにあるのです。プロ野球に限らず、企業にも日本にはこうした名誉職的リーダーが非常に多いんではないでしょうか。
　シドニーではキューバを初めとした中米諸国に日本がすんなり勝てるとは思えません。特にメジャーの選手を輩出している国が、メジャーのプレイヤーを送り込んできたら・・・。松坂や黒木がメッタ打ちにあうシーンは見たくないなあ。日本というのは本当に内向きで、世界観に欠けるんじゃないでしょうかねぇ・・・。

　Ｇ８ではからずも日本の通信料のバカ高さを証明???

　確かに前回のケルンサミットでの通信費無料というのは例外だったとしても、ダイヤルアップで従量制という通信インフラの状況はもはや先進国の中では異常事態ということなのでしょうか。
　一説によればNTT法によって、過疎地域も含め同じ通信料としなくてはならないことがネックなのだそうですが、それよりも、多くの企業がリストラの名のもとにかなりのダウンサイジングを強いられている中で、NTTはどうなんでしょう。
　結局競争がないことが原因だと思いますけど、どうしたら健全な競争になるのか考えてほしいです。「規制緩和しました。参入は自由です。でもえこひいきはしませんよ。」ではガリバーNTTには対抗できないでしょう。

　今日付けの日経に、サッポロビールの2000年六月中間期決算発表の記事が載っていました。それによりますと、経常利益が12億円・前年同期比65％減となり、会社側期初予想の55億円を大きく下回ることになりそうです。
　ここ２～３年ほど、サッポロビールの株価は麒麟麦酒やアサヒビールに比して、著しく低迷しています。今年上半期のビール市場においては、サントリーを除く各社とも「麦芽100％」の新製品を投入したわけですが、総じてヒットしなかったようです。この新製品においても、ヒットしなかったとはいえ、アサヒの「スーパーモルト」麒麟の「素材厳選」が５月の出荷量で30万ケースを出荷しているのに対し、サッポロの「グランドビア」は20万ケースを割る状況となっています。この「麦100戦争」は皮肉にも従来からの定番商品であるサントリーの「モルツ」の好調ぶりにつながり、今年６月までで前年比６％増であったようです。
　では、サッポロの出した商品が全部ヒットしなかったか、というとそうではなく、発泡酒の「冷製辛口」は５月の初回出荷が97万ケース、６月は126万ケースと年間目標の1000万ケースも達成可能なペースです。九州、名古屋工場閉鎖などリストラの効果が出てくるのもこれからで、状況はまだまだ厳しい('97、'98年度赤字から'99年度黒字転換)ですが、そうした中でこの冷製辛口のヒットは明るいニュースです。今後は、キリンが「一番絞り」を定番商品に育て上げたように、本業のビールで「黒ラベル」に対抗できるような商品の開発が期待されます。いずれにしてもちょっとした商品の変化で株価の回復は見られると思いますので、他社と同路線で勝負せず、差別化された商品開発が必要ではないでしょうか。

In the US,post office is a little bit different than post office here in Japan or the one that I had experienced within Europe.In Japan and europe,you can do quite a bit few paying,sometimes utilities,things like that I believe,you can pay it at the post office.In the US,usually you can't make that kind of payment directly at the post office,but you can have money order made.A money order,we say,similar to a check,but it's not a personal check.You give the money to the post office,they give you the money order,and then youu can send it to wherever you need to pay your bills.
(4)home loan
In the US,home loans tend to be called mortgages.
(5)staff
Ramirez uses the word staff as a verb.I often hear people mixing it up,when they use it as a noun.It means a group of people working together to accomplish some kind of business.In this case,it's used as a verb to mean hiring and finding the people to be in a place to carry up the business.
(6)at one's fingertips
Something that's at your fingertips is instantly or literally available.It's probably even closer than something that's on hand.

　私も時間がなくて、英語にふれる時間が１日で15分程度(やさビジも後半は聞いていない。)しかありません。TIMEの定期購読(定期つん読？)も購読期間満了につき、解約しました。こうした中で、英語のペーパーバックを読むなんて余裕は全然ないのですが、ちょっとした時間を見つけて読むようにしたいな、と思っています。
　先日ここで紹介した、電通大の酒井助教授は英語のシャワーを浴びることを推奨しています。その「浴びる」の第一回は「ペーパーバックを読む」こと。その時のルールは以下の三つです。
①辞書と文法は使わない。
②わからないところは飛ばす。
③読み進めなくなったらすぐやめて次の本にする。
また、読む時間を特別に作ろうとせず、通勤時間や空き時間に読めるよういつも手元においておくことも説いています。また、具体的な本の名前ですが、
第一段階；Roald Dahlという作家の児童文学20冊を買い、読む。
第二段階；ドリトル先生やケストナーの作品、シドニーシェルダンに挑戦する。
などが挙がっています。
　三つのルールを忠実に守ったとすると、TIMEは私の許容範囲ではありません。で、私が立ち読みしていいな、と思ったのが、東大出版会からでている「The Universe of EnglishⅠ・Ⅱ」「The Expanding Universe of English」です。この本は基本的に東大駒場、つまり１年生から２年生用の英語リーダーの教科書なのですが、この本のいいところは、そのトピックの多様性です。知的好奇心をかきたてられるような内容なんですね。東大という総合大学で学ぼうとするさまざまな意志(法学部から医学部まで)をもった学生のための教材である、という性格(編者註)からしてこのような内容になったのでしょう。またこの本で私が好きなのは、詳しい解説が載っていることです。もちろん、この解説をどのように使うかは、個人に任されるわけですけど。CD付きだとちょっと高くなってしまうので、本だけ買おうと思っています。

A reverse auction is when people who want to fly somewhere tell the time,the airlines and the amount they're willing to pay.They post all of this on the auction site.And then,if there's an airline that's willing to take them for that price at that time,they get the ticket.

　NTT料金に関する日米の基本的合意、NTT東西会社の合併など通信インフラに関するニュースを聞きましたが、結局通信料金も中途半端な値下げに留まったという感想を持ちました。
　通信料金についてはいろいろなところで議論になっていますが、高速道路料金についてはどうでしょうか？高速道路の無料開放で、物流におけるメイン手段であるトラック輸送の費用の削減や人々の移動が活性化されて、経済効果が期待でき、とてもいいんじゃないかと思うんですけど。確か高速道路って建設後10年か15年すると無料開放されるはずなのに(ゆえに東名は無料開放できるはず？)、法律か何かの解釈の問題で、他で高速道路をつくっているものだからそれはできない、とか聞いたことがあります。
　USではハイウェイも無料で、ネットも低価格で常時接続できますよね。日本では今まで、こうしたインフラの利用者からお金を吸い上げることができてきたわけですが、今後こうしたことを放置していて経済って活性化するんでしょうか。middlemanが排除されていくビジネストレンドにあって、こうした過大な「ディストリビューティングコスト」だけがそのまま残るは納得いかないなあ。

　USの社会学者、エドワード・ホール氏は世界の文化を「high-context」文化と「low-context」文化に分類しているそうです。前者は皆が似通った価値観、バックグラウンドを持ち、文化面・心理面での共有度が高い状況で、後者はその逆ということです。日本は前者、USは後者に位置付けられています。ビジネスにおいては両contextが出会う場で、それを理解しあうのはなかなか難しいとか。日経ビジネスの英語の強化書にこんなジョークが出ていました。

　昨日の日記でWBTのことを書きましたが、これだけネットが普及してくると、大学の在り方も変わってきますね。そのキーワードは「コンテンツ」だと思います。今まで各大学の授業におけるコンテンツはその大学に通っていなければ、知る機会は極めて少なかったと言えると思います。しかし今後USのように大学のコンテンツが一般に公開されるようになってくると、どうでしょうか？
　話の焦点は少しずれるのかもしれませんが、東大の蓮實総長がこんな発言をしています。
・例えば中田選手。日本チームじゃなくて、若くして海外のチームへ行ってしまう。その方が儲かるし、いいんだということがわかってくれば、しかるべき海外の大学へ18歳のときに行くということは今後大いにあり得る。そうだとすれば、東大に入ることが目標だという時代ではない。
・日本では大体22歳で職に就くが、そんな国は世界にない。USだって職業を選ぶのは27～28歳だ。また職業を選んでから大学に戻ることも可能だ。ところが日本では22歳で就職させるために人々はお受験させている。
・これから日本の大学は、日本人による日本のための日本の大学であることをやめなくてはならない。
　頭の悪い私が考えるのに、学問というものは勉強とは違うものだと思います。学問というのはいろいろな社会現象や物理現象に新しいアプローチを示すことで、学問の成果は社会に還元されていくべき、と思うのです。日本にはあまりいないと思いますが、自分なりの見解を新たに提示することなく、海外の学者の学説を和訳しているだけの大学の先生がいるとしたら、そういう人の講義を受けるよりはオリジナルを学んだほうがいいような気がしますね。英語が日本においてますます特殊なものでなくなっていくとすれば、より優秀な学生はより優秀なコンテンツを求めて大学を選択していくでしょう。そうなると、優秀なコンテンツを持つUSはやはり強いんでしょうね。(brain drain？)で、結局、優秀なコンテンツを求めるためには、やはり英語の習得は重要、となるわけですか・・・。

　日本IBMなど、社員研修をWBT(Web Based Training)化する企業が日本でもでてきたようです。イントラネットなどを活用した教、研修のことで、パソコンを使い、いつでもどこでも必要な知識を学べるのが特徴、双方向性を活かし講師との質疑応答も可能だそうです。USでは既にネットを利用した研修サービスが「e-learning」として普及、e-commerceのB to B分野で一つの市場を形成し、2003年に100億ドルを超える市場に発展すると予想されているようです。
　この背景には「時間をかけて人材を育てる」余裕がなくなってきていること、根本的に「投資」として研修を捉える思想への転換が図られている実態もUSにおいてあるようです。コンテンツの充実に関しては、e-learning企業は当然のこと、教育機関への広がりも見られ、例えばデューク大学ではグローバル企業のマネージャー以上を対象にした19ケ月のコース、50週間に及ぶ双方向のWBTなどが設置され、世界の各拠点で11週間の合宿に参加する場もあるそうです。
　日本ではバカ高の通信回線コストの問題があって、この市場が今後ブレイクスルーするかどうかはまだわからないようですが、社内研修の在り方もネットの発展に伴って変化しているのは確実なようです。

　日経ビジネスの特集で「英語の強化書」というのがありまして、電通大助教授の酒井邦秀氏がおもしろいことを書いています。
・５文型なるものが英語教育の根幹を成しているのは日本くらいのものだ。文型を意識する癖がつくと、英文をこねくりまわして理解するようになる。つまり、言葉を分析して理解しようという姿勢そのものがいけない。
・学校英語ではすべての文字を発音させる。これは捨てなければいけない。例えば「McDonald's」は「ダノス」としか聞こえないことがある。「マクドナルド」とは決して聞こえない。これは英語が「書いてある文字をすべて声にする言葉ではない」ことによる。「子音の後に母音がない場合、その子音は消える」傾向にあるのだ。使える英語を話したいのなら、現実に使われる音こそ「神様」だと思ってほしい。

　日本の企業がどれくらい大学に期待しているかどうかは、安サラリーマンの私にはよくわかりません。しかし、ウチの会社に入ってきた(かわいそうな？)新人クンたちは、会社でOJTの名のもとに教育を受け、それまで何を学んできたかは問われていません。結局、採用する際におおよその目安？にしてるだけなんでしょうかねぇ。
　大学で学んできたことが仕事と直結する、新しい、有益な大学ってできないものなんでしょうか。就職の際に名前を利用する、という発想からは全く切り離された。(多摩大学や宮城大学というのはこうした発想でできたんでしょうね。)やはりそうした大学が実績をあげてこないとなかなか難しいのかな。

A legacy is something you leave behind when you're dying for the rest of your family.It could be something important,it could be an idea, it could be a lot of money.A legacy could be many things.But the important point is it's transmitted from an ancestor or transmitted by an ancestor.

　友人のTEXANがMID WESTの悪口を言ってるよ、とMID WEST出身の友人に話してみました。なぜなら彼はWEST CoastやNEW ENGLANDのことは言わないのに、MID WESTのことは口にするからです。すると「南北戦争が影響してるかもしれないわね。特に代々南部に住んでたり、代々MID WESTに住んでる家族だとそういう傾向があるかもしれない。」ということでした。日本でも明治維新の時の影響が残っているところもあるそうですから、それと同じ事なのでしょうか。
(1)comfy
Comfy is a short form of comfortable,and it just sounds a little more like comfortable at home.There's warm,pleasant kind of comfort.
(2)undertreat
Undertreat is kind of an interesting word.Doctors treat an illness or some other medical problem,undertreating it means not fully taking care of it.You could also overtreat something.This under and over is used with other verbs,for example,undercooked or overcooked for food or underdressed,overdressed meaning you're too casual or too formal for a situation.

When people are on hand,they're available,they're ready to help or be there.When you're talking about things,it can also mean in stock.

Araki uses the word staffers,it's kind of interesting.When I'm working,sometimes I hear Japanese people say we hired the staff,but they say that when they mean one person.Actually a staff is a group of people,so if you're hiring only one person or if you're referring to the people in a staff,they're called staffers.
(6)hospital and nursing home
I think hospitals and nursing homes tend to focus on the medical or technical side of patient care.And hospices focus on the human side.
(7)be divided
I find this sentence kind of interesting,too.If you think of it literally,it sounds like doctors are split in half,you know,each one.But,of course,it refers to them having different opinions. They're divided into different opinion groups.

　雪印の不祥事が波紋を広げています。記者相手に「私も寝てないんだ！」とあたったり、「(雪印の)他の製品は安全です。」と具体的に本格的な再調査もせず安全宣言をしたり、「報告は受けていない。」と居直ったりと経営者としての資質云々以前に、人間性を疑うような社長は論外ですね。特に牛乳という乳幼児が多く消費する食品を扱う企業なだけに、問題は根深いと思います。消費者だけでなく、この人のおかげで泣いている、酪農農家や販売店からの信頼をいち早く回復するような抜本的な対応を望みます。
　無責任なことを言うようですが、ただ、雪印みたいな体質の会社って多い気がしますね。今の日本企業のサラリーマンシステムではこういうことが起こっても不思議でないように思います。トップの資質、報告システムに介在する思惑、減点主義、こうしたいろいろな要素が会社自身を揺るがす大事件に発展していった一つの例にすぎないのでは？

euthanasia is a word I first came across in probably junior high school.It's a very common topic for a classroom debate practice. Probably most kids in the US debate this a couple of times a year in school.The word comes from Greek and means easy death, according to my dictionary.
(3)if it were legalized
There's an interesting grammar point at the end of this sentence. You've probably studied it,but I think it's very difficult for second language learners to pick up.This isn't only English.The same thing happened to me learning German,even though in this area German and English are fairly similar.If it were legalized by changing from the simple present to this conditional tense,you indicate that what you're talking about is not true but you can think about it.
(4)physician
In this vignette,people have been saying doctor and physician.In English they're mostly interchangeable.Physician sounds maybe a little more formal.I think doctor is more of an AngloSaxon word. And words that came in from other languages in English often sound more sophisticated.But physician technically is a person skilled in the art of healing,a medical type doctor.A doctor,on the other hand,can be anyone who's very learned,who knows a lot and has studied a lot.
(5)play God
If you play God,you take charge of and make decisions on other people's fate.
(6)sue
It's fairly common in the US to sue doctors,if patients feel the doctors haven't carried out their duties correctly.
(7)first and foremost
First and foremost is kind of an interesting phase.It's doubled,so it intensifies the meaning of first or the meaning of priority. But actually first is often used for time,and foremost is often used spatially.
(8)morphine

(9)administer
I think the main difference between them,they're fairly interchangeable,but dispense sounds more like hand it out to someone and then they administer it to themselves,whereas administer a drug, I think a doctor would actually put the drug into your body.

　先日、ソフトバンクの経営戦略のセミナーを聴きに行ってきました。ソフトバンクコマース社の荒本室長が話をされ、非常に興味深かったです。
　現在ソフトバンクの経営戦略は、明治期の日本における財閥の多角化(海運業を１stステップとした)をトレースしており、①ポータルサービスでユーザートラフィックを確保、②financial serviceで金融のトラフィックを確保、③最終的にe-commerceで全産業に展開していく、というビジョンのもとで企業活動をおこなっているそうです。
　いろいろと興味深い話の連続だったのですが、特に印象に残ったものについて２、３点挙げてみます。
①e-commerceにおいて.com企業の評価はsubscriberの数によってされる。現在の収支が黒字かどうかは関係がない。事実amazon.comは赤字である。従前、音楽用CDの販売の最大手はcdnowであった。しかし、subscriberの数においてcdnowを圧倒する、amazon.comが音楽用CDの販売を開始した結果、あっという間にcdnowを抜き去ってamazon.comが売上高No1となった。amazon.comの強さはsubscriberに対してピンポイントの情報を常に流しているところだ。
②e-commerceの手法によって削減できるもの、それは人件費と不動産関係費である。「○○支店」というのは持たなくていいのだから。現実、スルガ銀行内にSOFT BANK支店を開設したが、普通預金金利は通常の市中銀行の倍に、また全国のCDも利用でき、手数料はSOFT BANKで負担している。CITI BANKでは窓口コストが１取引あたり１＄７￠であるそうだ。これがNet Bankingにより１取引あたり１￠まで削減できるそうで、この削減インパクトは社員100人削減に相当するとされている。そのためCITI BANKでは既存客に対して、「２５￠支払うから、インターネット口座に移行してほしい。」旨伝えているようだ。
③パソコンのように組立型の商品はBuilt to the owner、つまりNet上でオーダーメイドされていくことになろう。(ex;DELL)そこには営業マンは介在しない。商品供給元とエンドユーザーはmiddlemanを介さず商取引をおこなっていく。言い換えれば、Netで代用できるmiddlemanはこれから消えていくだろうということだ。ただ、気をつけなければならないのは、こうした商取引が既にビジネススキームの特許を取得しているケースがあることで、知らずに同じようなビジネススキームで商売をし、訴えられている場合がある。

dispense is a word that's often closely related to doctors and health care,it means give out or deal out in portions,so giving people a small part of one whole.It's often used with medicine.There's another related word dispensary,which is the place where things are dispensed.But the usual use of dispensary is a doctor's office or dentist's office.
(8)you know,though
Mann says you know,though,it's a nice introduction to something you're still kind of thinking about and you want to put it into the conversation,but you haven't quite finished your thinking,it's kind of a signal.
(9)living death
a living death is really an interesting phrase because the two words together are opposites,with if you're living,you're not dead,if you're dead,you're not living.But sometimes you can put them together like that.It's called an oxymoron,and come up with a very strong,new meaning.
(10)mull over
If you mull something over,you ponder it or consider it at length. You think about it long and deeply.

　関東の競馬場は府中、中山とも行ったことがあるのですが、関西の競馬場は中京、淀、仁川ともに行ったことがありませんでした。そこで今日は阪神競馬場に行くことにしました。
　西宮北口で乗り換えて、仁川駅に到着し、交差点角を左に曲がると、阪神競馬場が見えます。メインスタンドから見える風景は緑が多く、非常に落ち着いた感じですね。競馬場自体は中山を一回り小さくした感じで、ターフビジョンも一基しか設置されていません。内馬場に行ってみましたら、すぐ横を障害の襷がけコースが通っており、障害レースをすぐそばで見ることもできるようなレイアウトになっていました。またメインの芝コースも観客席との距離感が非常に近く、目の前を馬が走っていく感じです。更に競争後の馬寄せとウィナーズサークルも観客席の目と鼻の先にあるので、いいですね。とにかくファンと馬の距離が近い印象を持ちました。(府中に慣れてるせいかな？)

　昨日の広島球場に続いて、今日はグリーンスタジアム神戸に野球を見に行きました。ＧＳ神戸は私は初めてだったので、どれくらい時間がかかるのか知らなかったのですが、けっこう遠い印象を持ちました。(梅田から１時間弱？)
　駅を降りた時の印象は、西武球場(ドームになる前の)の雰囲気に似てるなあ、という感じでした。駅から球場へ行く途中の雰囲気や球場の周りの緑、ブルペンの配置、そして球場に来るファン・・・。ただ、違うのは内野に張られた天然芝ですね。やはり打球のスピードが若干殺されるせいか、内野の守備が見ていて楽しいんですよ。人工芝だとあっさり内野を抜けていくゴロが、天然芝だと内野手が追いつくことができ、本来のプロの内野守備が見られるんです。オリックスのショートも近鉄のショートも名前は知らないのですが、守備はすばらしいものがありました。
　それとファンサービスがすばらしいですね。イニングの間に巨大パチンコで記念グッズをスタンドに飛ばしたり、ベストカップルを紹介したり。そして何よりもスタンドがすごくリラックスして野球を楽しんでるんです。小さな子供を連れたファンも多く、まさにボールパークといった感じ。
　パ・リーグのスタジアムはＧＳにしても、西武ドームにしても、千葉マリンや福岡ドームにしても郊外にあるため、都心型のセ・リーグのスタジアムよりもアクセス面で不利な点があります。ですので、平日のナイターを見に行くことはなかなか難しい現実と直面することになります。また地上波での露出も少ないということがあってなかなかなじみがない、という不利な点もあります。しかしながら、ＧＳのように内野天然芝化といったような本来のベースボールの楽しさを追求することによって、魅力あるものになっていくことができるのではないかと思いました。

　7月7日は七夕。とは全く関係ありませんが、今日は出張で広島に来ています。恥ずかしながら私は今まで広島に来たことはなかったので、すべてが初物でした。
　まず広島といえばお好み焼きですね。滞在先のホテルで聞いたら「お好み焼き村」(？)という所を紹介されました。ここは、ビルの中に何軒ものお好み焼き屋さんが入っています。２階から４階まで一応グルッとのぞいてみて、それから一旦外へ。駐車場の整理をしていたお兄さんにおいしいお店がどこか聞き、紹介された「八昌」というお店へ。初めてトライする本場広島での焼きそば入りお好み焼きは、中に入っているキャベツの水々しさが、食べていくにしたがって口の中に広がってきがちなソースのしつこさを消し、非常においしかったです。
　腹ごしらえした後は、有名な原爆ドームへ。時間的に資料館は既にクローズしていたので入れませんでしたが、ここへ来ると自分たちが多くの犠牲のもとに生かされていることを実感します。かの勝海舟は「戦争が起こればいつも犠牲になるのは力のない庶民だ。」ということを知り尽くしていて、江戸城無血開城に尽力した、と伝えられますが、経済の発展の道具として今後戦争という手段が使われないよう、祈るばかりです。
　　ここまで来たらやはりカープを見ずには帰れません。広島球場はまさに原爆ドームの前にあるんですね。よく「広島球場は狭い」とか「きれいでない」とか言われますが、この古く伝統ある球場でプロ野球がおこなわれることはとても大切なことだ、と私は思いました。しかし小宮山、すばらしいピッチングだったなあ。
　飲んだ後の仕上げは広島名物「つけめん」。胡町(？)の「みんみん」というところで食べましたが、これもなかなかおいしかったです。辛さは普通にしましたが、もっと辛くてもよかったかな？

　アメリカ人の友人と飲んで、民事再生法の話をしたんですが、この日本の不景気がいつまで続くのかということが結局話題の中心となりました。彼が言うには「規制緩和・企業間競争の促進」が不可欠だ、ということでしたが、確かに企業の真の体力をつけるためには必要だ、と私も思います。ただこういった不況下で「米の自由化」がどんどん進んだらどうなるか？ということについては疑問に感じるところもあるわけです。バブルを支えた不動産の高騰のツケ、つまり不良債権処理はまだ完全に片付いていないと思われます。しかも時価会計が取り入れられて、今後日本企業の帳簿には保有資産の減損があらわれてきます。日本の経済体質を考えれば、日本の好況は地価の高騰に支えられてきたといえるのではないでしょうか。その土地の供給が更に増加したらどうなるか？'93のガットウルグアイラウンドで日本は国内消費量の４～８％の範囲で米の輸入を受け入れることを決定、'95に米の輸入が始まり、'99からは米の輸入を関税化することになり、関税以外の米の輸入制限をなくすことで，関税さえ払えば輸入が自由にできることになっています。(まだまだ高いと言われていますが、外圧で早晩引き下がるでしょう。)そうなると市街化区域内の農地がもっと供給されてくることが予想されます。(農地法５条により届出のみで転用可)つまり私が彼に言ったのは、米の輸入自由化の問題は単なる農業問題に留まらない、ということです。中にはUSによってこの一連の流れが日本政府に強要され、今日の資産デフレを起こした、つまり日本経済をどうUSの利益のために利用していくかというタクティクスのもとにこれらの現象が起きていると言う人もいます。彼は「そう言われてみるとそうかもしれないね。30年代のアメリカの不況みたいなものかな？」と話していました。
　これからの日本はITにもっと注力しなければならない、多くの人はそう言いますし私も賛成です。しかし注意しなくてはならないのはe-commerceは店舗などの不動産関係費、従業員などの人件費をできる限り排除していく中で事業性がある、ということです。この不況下でドラスティックな産業構造変革をおこなっていくことは並大抵のことではありません。strike the balanceが結局重要なのでしょうが、言うは易く行うは難し、だと思います。

Jenny also mentions that Lily listened all the while. Another way you could say that is the whole time or maybe even continuously.

If you take the initiative, you start things.You use your own will or willpower, your own decision to make a beginning.

And to stand by is to wait or be on call.

A code,of course,is a way to hide your message.A code word would be a secret word with a special meaning.
(6)make it plain
If you make something plain,you make it very clear or easy to understand.
(7)walk away
If you walk away from something,you avoid taking the blame, or you escape your responsibility.
(8)get away with
If you get away with something, usually you've done something you shouldn't have done,but you're not punished for it.You've escaped.
(9)victims and abusers
It might sound a little strange to put victims and abusers together with compassion.But I think the current thinking about the abusers is that they're also suffering from something,otherwise they wouldn't be doing that kind of behavior.

　日本企業のIR活動もだんだん進んできていると思いますが、私も某社のアナリスト・投資家説明会に参加してきました。ただし、参加者は機関投資家の担当者であり、広く公開しているわけではありません。
　連結重視の経営形態への移行が当たり前の世の中になっていますので、説明もグループ戦略が中心でした。グループマネジメント体制と、一通りの数値に関する説明が終わった後、今後のグループ戦略としてIT関連ビジネスの現況と具体的な今後の取り組みが説明されました。ちょうどこのアナリスト説明会にあわせたように(？)ニュースリリースされた「CATV施設を利用したブロードバンドネットワーク事業に関してのソニーとの提携」がいい説明材料となっていました。
　アナリストからの質問もこうした話の流れから、当初はIT関連が多かったのですが、徐々に会社側のマネジメントに対する質問が多くなってきました。日産のゴーン氏は自身のマネジメントに対する責任をはっきり口に出していましたが、やはりそこまでの歯切れのよい決意は経営陣から聞くことはできず、「結局、この前(アナリスト説明会で)説明されたことは実行されたと考えているのか、そうではないのか？『企業として事業の再構築をしてきましたがあまり進んでいません、でもこんなことをやってますからお金を投資してください。』では投資家に対する説明として甘いのではないか？」というアナリストからのツッコミに対しては、経営環境とその企業の事業性についての理解を求めるに留まりました。
　株主としては、その企業の株主としての価値を最大化することを企業に求めるのは当然の行為であり、こうしたIR活動は歓迎すべきものです。もっと多くの企業が、その経営者にそのビジョンを説明させたり、株主からの意見を聞く機会を持たせる機会を増やしていってくれることを希望します。
　さてこのアナリスト説明会、NHKで今月末に放送される予定でテレビカメラが入ってました。万一ご覧になられる機会があって、ブルーのストライプのワイシャツにトルシエみたいな眼鏡をしている、いんちき株屋みたいのがいましたらそれは私ですので、どんな奴なんだろうとお思いの方はそちらでご確認ください(^_^；。

Lou mentions three ways as that sometimes people are battered. Shove means push,a short,hard push that often makes your head snap.A slap is hitting someone with your hand open,it's often done on the head or the face.And a punch is when you make a fist with your hand and then hit someone that way.
(4)ER
ER is often used in English to refer to the emergency room in a hospital. It's the place you're taken if you need immediate medical attention.
(5)out on the street
Out on the street is another way to say homeless.I think women and children end up homeless because sometimes the women haven't had their works or anything,and as they're confused and in trouble anyway,but at least they're not being beat anymore.
(6)divorce alone
Divorce alone means only divorce.I think some people feel if you're separated from the person who is beating you,your problems are over,but usually they're not,unfortunately.

　それにしても昨日は凄い雨でしたね。NICビルを出る頃、溜池山王駅でポツポツと雨が降り出したかな、と思ったらあっという間に雷雨となり、赤坂ラーメンを食べるのは中止。それから用事を済ませに新宿まで行ったのが運の尽きで、友人と待ち合わせをしていた銀座まで行こうと丸ノ内線に乗ったら、四谷三丁目でストップ。駅のアナウンスで「冠水のため、ただいま上下線とも運転を見合わせております。」・・・。とりあえず駅の外へ出てみたものの、あまりの雷雨で一歩も動けず。しばらく待っていたのですが、雨がおさまってくる気配は毛頭なく、勇気を振り絞ってバス停へ。バスで青山一丁目までたどり着き、銀座に着いた頃には雨はほとんどあがってました(T_T)。靴の中までビショビショになってしまい、最悪でした。
　一昨日も夕立がひどかったですよね。たまたま私は渋谷のエクセルで打ち合わせをしてたんですが、横なぐりの雨がガラスをたたいてました。この前、日テレの特命リサーチで「大雨による東京の機能停止」を取り上げていましたが、それを髣髴とさせる雷雨でした。それにしても東南アジアにいてスコールを体験してるような感じだったなあ・・・。

She probably just wanted to keep in touch and let Jenny know, even though they're not working together anymore, she's thinking about her now and then.

Had me packed up might be sort of a funny sounding phrase if you're not used to it, but it's very natural for English speakers.It means that Lily took charge of everything, Jenny did nothing. It sounds like she was even hardly aware of what was happening.

If you stop in,you visit.Sometimes people say drop in as well.
(4)leading reason
You could say the main reason or the most important or the most common reason instead of leading.
(5)few and far between
few and far between is a phrase you might hear again and again when someone's talking about something rare,something not very common.

　先日見たアメリカンビューティーですが、訳がわかったようなわからなかったような・・・。友人のネイティブが追加の感想を述べてくれたのですが、在日アメリカ人にとっても若干complicatedだったようです。
　「おそらく現代アメリカにおける家族に関する、あらゆるテーマがこの映画の中に散りばめられていると思う。家族の一人一人が心の奥底でどんな風に考えているか、ってこともね。家族愛、affairs、虐待、同性愛、ドラッグ、SEXなどなど。こんな風にアメリカ人たちの感じ方を描写するのはとてもいいことだと思う。これに至る、アメリカ社会のプレッシャーがどんなものであるか、そしてそのプレッシャーが家族に対してどんな作用をしているか、理解するのに役立つと思う。」
　一つ一つのテーマを考えてみると、日本の社会が抱える問題ととても似ていると思います。従来の家族の形が現代の社会構造とうまく対応できず、ミスマッチを生じている、その結果が家族という対面を保ちながら、以前あったような家族同士のコミュニケーションがうまく図れなくなってきている、そんな感じがします。

Another very simple way to introduce someone is to say this is. Sometimes in Japan I hear people say,He is Hiromi,that's not an introduction,you have to say this is.

But when Hiromi Araki asks her,he says,What brought you back?,What circumstances happened so that you came back?
(4)it's a long story
Maybe it's the same in Japanese,I'm not sure.But often when someone begins this way in English,it means We don't want to tell the whole story,I don't want to talk about it.
(5)to make a long story short
When you make a long story short,you often just tell the highlights or the most important points,and don't bother with the details.
(6)I'm sorry things didn't work out for you.
This is a good phrase actually.If someone tells you about some bad luck or hard times that they went through, you can show a little sympathy for them without being noisy about the details.Another similar phrase is I'm sorry to hear that.
(7)treat one like a queen
He probably did many things for her and gave her many things and wouldn't allow her to put herself to any trouble or anything unpleasant.
(8) tie the knot
Tied the knot is a phrase that's often used to mean got married,or tie the knot, get married. Getting married is similar to tying yourself to another person for the rest of your life. And that's where the phrase comes from.

　神津島での地震は震度６弱を記録したということを聞き、驚きました。三宅島での避難勧告が解除されたばかりで、住民の皆さんもホッと一瞬息をつかれたであろうタイミングでのこの強い揺れは、どればかりのインパクトがあったでしょうか。一日も早い火山活動の休息と地震のおさまりを祈るばかりです。
　そうした中、テレビ番組で神津島出身の自衛隊員が今回被災地救援のために、自分の生まれ故郷に戻って援助活動をおこなっている、というリポートがありました。大規模災害の度に、その被災地救援に活躍される自衛隊員の皆さんの活動は非常に貴重だと思います。何とか今回も全力で救援活動にあたっていただきたいと思います。

　先日オリックスの宮内氏のコメントをここで紹介させていただきましたが、今日はノーベル賞物理学賞受賞者で芝浦工大学長の江崎玲於奈氏のコメントを紹介させていただきます。
・日米の企業の違いを言うと、米国の企業では博士号を持った人材が活躍している。ところが日本企業では博士というのは使いこなせない。IBM時代に「全部博士号の人間を採れ」と言った。日本の博士号を持った人材の賃金は相対的に安かったからだ。これは一つには企業で活躍するような博士を日本の大学が育てていないこと、もう一つには日本企業がそれを使いこなすだけの器量がなかったことを示している。
・この結果、産業の競争力の低下をもたらした。特に問題なのはPCソフトとバイテク分野である。
　要求する側、雇用する側に立つ人間が有能な人間を使いこなせない、ということは日本ではよくあることだと思います。当分このまま日本からUSへのbrain drainは続いていくのでしょうね。
