　鑑定サイトが大人気のようですね。その中でも、自分の価値を金額にしたらいくらくらいだろうか？という疑問に答えてくれるサイトがあります。もちろん、お遊びですけど。

　ちなみに私の値段は6932万9918円で、「駆け出し弁護士級」と出ました。各値段の評価では「運」のみがＡライセンスで、「金運も恋愛運もいい。ただ、世界がうまく自分の思い通りに回転しても、自分の才能だと思いこまないでください。」とのこと。全然運がいいなんて思わないけどなあ。
　また精神鑑定をするサイトも大人気だそうです。

精神年齢はなんと27歳と出ました。「あなたの精神年齢は、大人になりたてです。若々しさがあり、時には子供っぽくなることもありますが、世間一般に認められる程の常識を持ち合わせています。ただ、大人の年季というものは微塵も感じ取れません。」おお！何となくあっている気がするぞ。(←本当かぁ？)友達になれそうな人は・・・「木村拓哉」「サザエさん」「キン肉マン」、おお！キムタクか、すげーじゃん・・・。
　これらのサイトは一日に５千件のアクセスがあったり、本も出ていたりとかなりメジャーなようです。特に「りゅうりゅうの・・・」は大阪の大学生が昨年の夏休みに暇つぶしにつくったそうです。この他にも鑑定サイトはたくさんあるそうで、時間があったらトライされてみるのもおもしろいんじゃないでしょうか。
(1)format
Format,Lou is just talking about making his format easy to read,but he didn't really give any details.I think it's easier to talk about what not to do to have a good format than what you should do.Maybe the main should is that use only characters on your keyboard.Don't use special characters.If you need much more than the shift control,more capital letters,you can't be sure that the person receiving your e-mails as going to be able to read what you tied.The computer might interprete the signal completely wrong and I heard some terrible messages like that really hard to read.
(2)concise
Being concise is very important in English.The current style especially in business is to keep everything as short and to the point as you can.
(3)ramble
Ramble is a kind of walking no specific goal,,just walking and enjoying probably for a long time.The word is also used for speaking or communicating.Ramble on and on means you just keep going slowly,but nowhere in particular,means your point isn't clear.
(4)get back to you
Getting back to someone means answering them or replying to them,but it doesn't work as noun.You can't say get back.
(5)If you need a quick reply,say so
I think this is the very important point saying when you need every reply.I found at work a lot of people don't want to include a clear deadline,when they make a request.So I always have to ask them"Is this a special request or routine request?".If it's routine,there is a very clear deadline.Impress the reason the deadline is very important.And please,of course,with the request part is perfectly polite,if there is absolutely no problem doing that.And one of the reasons is it's really good that you've explained the reader why that date or time important to you.So they understand the situation more clearly and they can organize their own work.They probably have requests from many people,they can't organize their own work and handle everybody's request without having to do overtime or scramble,because they didn't know when you needed it.
(6)I use quotation marks and double spacing to highlight what I'm corresponding to
I think this is also excellent advice,because you don't want to force the reader to look back at all your correspondence to find out what you're responding to.Some of them like me may throw away older e-mails as soon as possible.I tend to clean out my inbox and outbox regularly so that I don't get important messages mixed up with older messages.

　私は知らなかったのですが、新規にプロ野球の球団を買ってリーグに入ろうとすると２００億円(！)の加入料を支払わなければならないんだそうですね。これでは事実上、球団の売買はできないということになりますね。南海ホークスがダイエーに身売りをしたのが最後だと思いますが、この規約はその後締結されたようです。結局「新規参入阻止規定」と呼んでもいいのかもしれません。
　これでは、経営の苦しい球団の親会社が球団を売るにも売れず、一方ではＦＡ制度やドラフトの事実上の廃止で、人気選手や看板選手、有望新人が特定の球団に集中することになり、不人気球団にとっては悪循環となります。プレーする選手にとってもいいはずもなく、ましてやプロ野球ファンにとってもいいことではないような気がします。これは自由競争社会なのだから仕方がないんだ、とお考えになられる方も多いと思いますが。
　私はそもそも１２球団を同じように考えるということ自体に無理があると思います。１２球団の中には収入規模から言って「大企業」と「中小企業」が存在します。このような差が出てくるのはマーケット（本拠地）が違いますし、メディアでの露出度も違いますから、当然のことと言えます。しかし、もし「中小企業球団」の新しいスポンサーが現れたとしても、参入障壁を高くしてその球団が大企業に成長できる「チャンス」を奪ってしまったら、プロ野球というマーケットは拡大の余地がなくなってしまうことにならないでしょうか？競争のない状態、新規参入者による活性化のない状態は球界にとって必ずしもいいことだとは言えないと思います。

(2)no-no
A no-no is sometnhing unaccepted or forbidden.I think it tends to be used more with kids.Actually I think that's a really good way to tell people,you know,he(JFK.Jr) didn't want to be called that,'cause the John-John,that's style is also basically for kids.
(3)Think again.
This phrase is also used when someone wants to say you're wrong.They say "Think again."
(4)dishes the dirt on
If you dish the dirt on someone,you spread rumors about them.
(5)tawdry
Tawdry is kind of an interesting adjective,I think.It means basically cheap and flashy,but it's often used as a part of the description of something that's a little bit sad also.Tawdry dress,for example,it might be a woman who doesn't know about style or sophistication,trying act that way.
(6)the flip side
The flip side is often the other side of a single record.That has the less popular song on it,so if you want to talk about the opposite,the other side,you could say on the flip side.
(7)Sincerely or Regards
In,from around the year late 80's,until the early 90's,I was in Germany and not working,so I didn't see many letters in English.The first time I came across Regards was when we came back to Japan and I started working.Sometimes I also see Best Regards which sounds very cheery and nice,but sometimes it makes me think who gets the second best?

　これはこの夏、私の友人のネイティブ（白人女性）が休みにUSへ帰ったときの航空会社の話。彼女はいつもUSに行くときに限らず、海外に行くときは某○Ａ社の便を利用するそうです。
　彼女がまず成田からシカゴまで行くときにチェックインしたら、自分がネットで予約した席と異なる席がチケットに書かれてあったそうです。そこで「どうなってるわけ？」とプリントアウトしておいた紙を日本人男性の地上職員に見せたら、「うーん、おかしいですね～。」と言いつつも、搭乗口に電話して元の席を確保してくれたそうです。
　さて、帰りはシアトルから戻ってきたのですが、タコマ空港のカウンターでアメリカ人女性の地上職員が、彼女の身なりを見て（Ｔシャツとジーンズだったそうですが。明らかにcollage studentだと勘違いしてなめた態度だと言ってました。）「あんた、日本に住んでるの？証拠見せて。」と感じ悪く聞いてきたので、やむなくヴィザを見せようとパスポートを渡したら、「どこにヴィザがあるかわかんないでしょ？あんたがそのページを指し示さなきゃ。」と横柄な態度。更には追い打ちで「１ポンド荷物の重量が超過してるわ。減らしなさいよ。」。「えー！、１ポンドくらいいいじゃん！」と言ったが譲らず、やむなく荷物をスーツケースから取り出したそうです。更にはまたまたチケットの座席が予約と異なっていたため、腹の虫がおさまらず空港内の○Ａのオフィスへ。会社ではビジネスクラスを用意してくれたらしいのですが、周りはスーツ姿の日本人ビジネスマンばかり。それはいいとしても、今度は客室乗務員が明らかにシカト。他の客には「Mr.Suzuki、do you・・・？」と名前を呼んでドリンクや食事を配っているのに、完全に無視されたそうです。
　結局「見た目のstatus」というのがアメリカでは本当に重要だ、と言っていました。もしＴシャツとジーンズでなくて、アルマーニのスーツを着ていたら状況は全く違っただろうと。その辺りに関して、USでははっきりしてそうですもんね。

I think in this case maybe the others haven't met her yet,or maybe Lou Cruise and his wife are quite a bit older than the other group.That might be part of it.Or he could be just kind of joking around and calling his wife Mrs.Cruise.But it is very common.
(4)spammer
A spammer is someone who sends junk mail.Sometimes it's advertising,but it can be all kinds of different things that you didn't ask for and you'd rather not have.
(5)sick joke,black humor
And then sick jokes and black humor are sometimes related things. A sick joke would be a joke in very bad taste that almost everyone would say it's very bad taste,and not just some people think it's bad but most people think it's bad. Black humor is a little bit different.It tends to see humor even in serious or unhappy situations.The people involved in the situation maybe don't find it comical,but from the outside looking at the situation sometimes you can't see humor in them.

　今週のビニエットではe-mailでグリーティングカードを送ることが是か非か議論されていますね。確かに花束はヴァーチャルなものをプレゼントされるよりは、実物をもらった方がいいでしょう。でもカードはどうでしょうか？
　グリーティングカードとしてすぐ思い出されるのは、年賀状ですね。毎年すごく面倒くさいなあと思うのですが、現実問題、なかなかこれをやめることはできません。以前はプリントごっこが活躍したものですが、宛名書きはこれで代行することはできず不便を感じていたところ、そこにＰＣの宛名書きソフトが登場したものだから、すっかりＰＣによる年賀状制作にシフトした感があります。
　年賀状の場合は義理で出すことも多いと思いますが、味気ない印刷済年賀状とＰＣによる宛名を見て本当に喜ぶ人が何人いるでしょうか？私はそれよりもe-cardであっても、心のこもった言葉がそこにあった方がいいと思います。形より中身、何にでも言えることかもしれませんね。

When you talk about a crowd like the younger crowd,that usually refers to a specific group of people that have something in common,so in this case it's young people.Sometimes people talk about being worried about that their children are getting in with the wrong crowd things like that.It means they don't approve of the people that children are becoming friends with.
(5)a box of chocolates that makes my mouth water
She talks about chocolates that makes her mouth water.A mouth water is also called saliva in your mouth as salivating.And everybody does it when they see something that they'd like to eat.
(6)beau
Beau means boy friend,usually when it's used nowadays.But it's a little bit a specialize way to say boyfriend .It sounds a little more courtly or old fashioned.
(7)ask me out
It only means go on a date.You could make it more specific,he asked me out to a movie or he asked me out to dinner.You could make it more specific when you went,but it has nothing to do with being outside.There is another phrase that might be a little difficult something,if you continue dating,then you can say I've been seeing him for two months,for example.Usually the word see,you can't use with ing,because it's something that just happens right,if your eyes are opened and wverything is functioning normally,you see it's not a choice and so you usually can't use it with ing form.In this case,though,see has a different meaning.

　もうすぐシドニーオリンピックですね。特にサッカーは今回史上最強とも言われ、メダルの獲得にも期待がかかります。
　ここ数年サッカーを見てますと、技術の向上には目を見張るものがあります。これは明らかにJリーグというプロリーグが日本に誕生し、また各地でサッカーをするための環境作りが進んだことがその理由に挙げられるでしょう。個々の選手の技術的には前々回のUSワールドカップ予選の時よりも前回のフランスワールドカップのときの方が、また今回のシドニー組の方が前回の仏W杯のときよりも上であるように思います。それにともなって個々の技術面に関する監督の負担も少なくなっているはずで、「戦える」レベルに近づいているとは言えるのではないでしょうか。
　戦術面などは私はよくわかりませんが、技術的に自分たちは戦えるんだということを世界ユースでも経験した彼らだけに、自信を持って大会に臨んで欲しいです。後はゴン中山のような気迫かな。何とかメダルを取ってきてもらって、2002に向けていいスタートを切って欲しいものです。

　日経ビジネス最新号の特集は「人材輩出企業リクルート」です。この記事は近未来の日本の雇用市場に関する示唆に富んでおり、非常に興味深く読みました。
　よく言われることですが、USにおいては、特にホワイトカラーの場合、自分のキャリアをつくるためにいくつかの企業を転々とすることが多いようです。しかし、これをすぐ日本に当てはめることはできません。終身雇用制・確定給付型退職金制度が主流である日本の企業社会とは、労働市場の環境が異なりますし、今後労働力の流動性が高まると予想する声もありますが、これからどうなっていくかはわかりません。
　今まで日本では、最初の就職の時点で、ほぼその後の労働条件が決まってしまうため、その結果、大きな木（大企業）の下に身を寄せようと皆が殺到することになってきたと思います。なぜなら最初に小さな潅木の下に行った人が、大草原を生きていくいろいろな知識や経験を得、それが「木」にとって非常に有益なものであっても、その人が途中から大きな木の下に入り込むことは非常に難しいからです。だから、「就職の時点」において少しでも有利な状況をつくろうと大学受験が過熱することになり、18歳の時点である程度人生が決定されてしまっているということが言えるのではないでしょうか？
　確かに今までは、大学受験をこなすくらいの要領のよさとある程度の協調性さえあればよかったのかもしれません。しかし今、日本のおかれている状況は急速に変わりつつあります。求められる人材も変わってくるでしょう。故に転職が困難な労働市場を変えなければ、労働者から自分の能力を発揮させる場を失わせるだけでなく、会社側からも貴重な人材雇用のチャンスを失わせることになります。
　日経ビジネスによれば、リクルート出身者の転職時点の年収レベルは、野村證券や日本IBMと並んで３高と言われるそうです。なぜ彼らが高く「買われて」いるかについて詳しくは日経ビジネスを読んでいただければいいのですが、一言でいえば彼らが「就社」していないということがその理由でしょう。「とらばーゆ」編集長からNTTドコモに移り、iモード立ち上げに中心的役割を果たした松永真理氏がこんなことを言っているそうです。「リクルートは宝塚歌劇団みたい。宝塚ではトップスターが引退するとすぐ次のトップスターが生まれる。リクルートも人材が次々に外に出ていくことで次の人材が育っていく。」

　イメージというのはとても大事ですね。ブランドイメージでだいぶ売上も変わってしまうと思うし、タレントさんもイメージでCFに起用されたりされなかったり。
　もう10年以上前になりますが、私も学生の頃エキストラのバイトを２年間してまして(NHKの時代劇が多かった）、いろいろな俳優さんや女優さんを見ましたが、楽屋でのイメージとテレビでのイメージが一緒だったり違ったりしました。その時の俳優さんや女優さんの気分によっても違うかもしれないし、楽屋の雰囲気がそのまま「素」かどうかはわかりませんが。私が見た中の数人の方について勝手なことを言わせていただくと、
①「いい人だなあ。」と思った人
北大路欣也さん　一学生でエキストラの私に「将来は何になりたいの？」とか気さくに話してくれた。いい人だったなー。
榎木孝明さん　衣装とかかつらを衣装さんに返すときに、にっこり笑って「お疲れ様。」と榎木さんからあいさつしてくれた。いい人だったなー。
鈴木早智子さん　２年前くらいにNHKを歩いていて、スタジオの方をたまたま通りかかったとき、わざわざ立ってあいさつしてくれた。間違いなく人違いをされていたのでしょう(^_^；。
②「テレビで見た通りの人だなあ。」と思った人
柳沢慎吾さん　マシンガントークは楽屋でも。でもよさそうな感じの人だった。
泉谷しげるさん　べらんめえ調でざっくばらんな感じ。怒ったら怖そうだけど・・・。
三田佳子さん　ロケだったので正確には楽屋で見たわけではないが、女優らしい華やかさという点でこの人はすごいと思った。
原田芳雄さん　無口だけど、存在感はすごいなあと思った。
藤竜也さん　渋い男は楽屋でも渋い。寡黙にタバコをくゆらす姿は、テレビのイメージと全く同じ。
森久美子さん　声も大きく、すごく明るい。
③番外編
国谷裕子さん(クローズアップ現代)　２年前くらいにNHKですれ違っただけなんだけど、関係者にあいさつしてる感じがよかった。きれいな人ですねー。
益子直美さん　彼女もNHKですれ違っただけなんですが、雰囲気的にすごく気さくな感じ。さすが元全日本だけあって背は高いですね。
④超番外編
ダライラマさん　この方はこの日記の中でも以前とりあげましたが、スーツを着て周りに誰もお付きの人がいなければ、誰も気づかないかもしれない。(なわけないか。)でも本当に物腰がやわらかく、優しそうな人だった。

Sometimes people use this phrase as a justification for spending more money than they really think they should.
(3)six-figure
Six-figure income,seven-figure income,these two phrases are fairly common when talking about larger incomes.I don't think people say five-figure income which is where most people in U.S. are.
(4)affluent clientele
I must have heard clientele somewhere,because I wasn't really surprised by it,but definitely in U.S. most people say clientele.And affluent clientele would be clients who have sufficient or extra resources or materials that they can use.Affluent is having plenty.

　雇用環境の厳しさが続く中、日経流通で東京・大阪に住む会社員2,200人を対象に、職業に関する資格についてアンケート調査をおこなったようです。「資格に対する考え」としては、「何か資格がほしいと思う」が52.3％、これに「ぜひほしい資格がある」19.7％を加えると、実に70％強の回答者が資格の取得について前向きに考えているという結果となっています。また、気になる「欲しいと思う資格(複数回答)」は
①情報処理技術者（国家資格）など「コンピューター関連」49.0％
②英検(公的資格)など「語学」30.8％
③公認会計士(国家資格)や証券アナリスト(民間資格)など「会計・金融」22.0％
とされています。
　こうして見ると「資格市場」というのはまだまだ拡大の余地がありそうですね。今後の少子化や大学の定員を考えれば、大学受験予備校がこうした社会人の市場に進出することが多くなりそうです。雇用市場においても、名より実をとる、というか、中途採用するとすれば「あなたはどこの大学出身ですか？」ということより「あなたは何ができますか？」ということの方が重要だと思いますから。
　こうした中で英語にまたまた新資格が登場することになったようです。名づけて「ボキャブラリ英語検定(略してV検)」(そこまでやるか・・・)。これはアルクと学習塾の学育舎が共同したもので、英単語の検定試験なのだそうです。日経流通では、双方ともこの検定試験を新設することにより、関連参考書の出版や教育サービスにおけるビジネスチャンスの拡大をねらっている、としています。学習の到達度はTOEIC方式のスコア認定ではなく、英検方式の等級認定。リスニングも含まれているようです。教育産業もなかなか大変ですね。

Lee talks about these millionaires not making the news.This phrase means their stories or information about them aren't used to news programs.
(2)their secret of success
I think you can hear the disappointment of people who would like to be millionaires when they find out how to do it.It's hard to work.
(3)They make news.
This is an interesting phrase because earlier we heard make the news means,make "THE" news.Make the news means get on a news program.Make news means that your actions or your lifestyle are so interest in that it can be a common news story.
(4)That's what wows most of us.
It probably had the word wow use more isn't injection.Something people say when they're surprised or impressed,but it can also be used as a verb like this sentence here and in that case it means impress or excite until people become enthusiatic.
(5)went off to seek their fortunes
Talking about the kids going off to seek their fortunes sounds a little bit romantic.You could just say they left the nest or you could say they got jobs and now are living on their own.

　今週のビニエットは「質素な百万長者」です。ビニエットの中ではいかに金持ちが我々の予想に反して、質素な暮らしをしているかが語られていますが、この元ネタは「The Millionaire Next Door」(Thomas J. Stanley, William D. Danko著）ではないかと思います。(違っていたらごめんなさい。)この本は少し前にテレビ番組で紹介された記憶があります。
　私もこの本は読んだことがないのですが、要するに金持ちになっても自分のライフスタイルを変えない、というところに彼らの特徴があるとしている、とテレビ番組ではしていました。amazon.comの読者感想欄に「これは金持ちになるための『指南書』ではない。」と書いてあるのは非常に的を射ていると思います。（amazon.comの読者感想欄はこちら）

　質素に暮らすのも、お金を使って贅沢に暮らすのもその人のライフスタイルなのだから、お金があるという前提条件だけで後者の生活を選ぶ必然性はまったくない、ということなのでしょう。でもまあ一般的には一度リッチさを経験した後でないと、質素なライフスタイルというのは取りにくいのではないでしょうか？物質的なリッチさを経験した後で初めてわかる世界があるような気がするなあ。
(1)wives are world-class budgeters
This sentence might be a little strange to Japanese people,because from I've heard in Japan it's sort of common wisdom that the wife is the one who takes care of the money and makes budget and saves money for the family.In U.S.,I think,some people share it,but it's very common for the husband to handle the family finances,not the wife.
(2)drop-dead
I think within the family,they talk about it this way,because they don't expect a drop-dead and they don't want to drop dead.And they can add a little humor to the situation,because it is important to save money in case of the worst happening.No one would know how to answer that.They pretty shocked.
(3)keel over
Keels over is the phrase that I think it may be related to the ships and boats.The keel is on the bottom of the boat.And if teh boat turns over in the water,of course,it's not good any more,the keel comes up on the water.So someone a person who keels over is someone who is falling over often in a faint or maybe you don't know the reason why.It could be also an euphemism for died.
(4)pinch pennies
Pinch pennies means economize or try to save money,spend less.
(5)luxury sedan
A luxury sedan is a kind of car,of course,it usually seats four people and has two or four doors.Other cars like a coup or coupe only seats two people.
(6)Ming vases
Also Ben talks about Ming vases.You can pronounce the word two ways in English [va;z] like he said or [veis].[va;z],though in this case because it's a very nice Ming vase,it's sort of symbol of wealth and powers that you can buy one of those very rare vases.But most people in most conversations in U.S.,I think,would say [veis],because [va;z] except for special circumstances sounds kind of snobbish.

　いつも英語の学習書を買ってもつん読になってしまうのですが、本屋さんで「お、いいな。」なんて思うとまた次の本を買っちゃうんですよね。
　で、またまた買ってしまいました。今回購入した本はSSコミュニケーションズから発行されている「究極の超難語『タイム』1001ワード」。単語→短いフレーズ→タイムの短文、という「３段階記憶法」で超難関1001語を完全マスターできる？ようです。昨年来定期購読し、完全につん読になっているタイムもこれを機会に読み返すことができたらな、と思うのですがまず無理でしょう（＾_＾；。
　内容としては確かに見たことがない（それだけ私がサボっているだけですが）語彙が多い一方で、けっこう別の場所（やさビジなど）で聞き知った言葉もあります。タイムファンの方には、息抜きに？ちょっとこの本を眺めるのもいいかもしれません。
(1)revelation
I think it's specially the nown form is used in the bible for when God reveal something that's true to human beings.People often use it as a strong form of eye opener.
(2)his family is old money.

Something that's commonplace is ordinary or unremarkable.You probably wouldn't notice it specially or less you have special purpose.

　昨日はまたまた真っ昼間サッカーをやったのですが、超暑かったですねー。欧州のプロリーグは秋から春がシーズンですが、やはりサッカーは盛夏のスポーツではないような気がします。
　さて話は変わりますが、最新号の日経ビジネスに非常に興味深い記事が載っていました。タイトルは「良くても売れないの、なぜ!?－大ヒットと不発を分ける隠れた法則－」。
　特集の中で、商品としては非常に魅力的で優れたものであるのに、ちょっとしたボタンのかけ違いから販売において苦戦している例が挙がっています。ちなみにそれらの商品とは
①自動車　「アウディ」　アウディジャパン
②パソコン　「レッツノート」　松下電産
③洗濯機　「最優洗」　シャープ
④アイスクリーム　「ＡＹＡ」　明治乳業
⑤無糖茶　「十六茶」　アサヒ飲料
です。原因は主に、ブランドイメージの散漫化、市場の見誤り、商品自体の認知度の低さ、商品内容の消費者への伝達の困難さなど、とされています。特に「最優洗」なんかはここに挙げられている他の商品と違って、そんなに買い換えをするものでもないし、かつ店頭で見ただけではそのよさを実感することがほとんど無理なわけで、ちょっともったいないなと思います。
　一方、低迷脱出のために何をしているかというtipが、ペプシ(コーラ)、富士写(ビデオテープ)、キューピー(ドレッシング)を例にとって挙げられています。ペプシはサントリーの販売網の利用と「おまけ」(スターウォーズのキャラやペプシマンのキャップ)、富士写はビデオテープのラベルに日本語を使用、キューピーは大胆な値下げと、結局従来の手法のいずれかをとっているわけで、いかに「やればできること」を素早くかつ実践するかということにかかっているんだなあ、というのが個人的な感想です。(ビデオテープのラベルの日本語使用は業界では常識ではない、と日経ビジネスではしていますが、パッケージングの変更という意味では従来からある手法のような気がする。)

　会計ルールが国際的に統一の方向で動いているわけですが、日本には日本の会計基準があるわけで、統一の過程で日本の意見やルールを反映させることはもちろん必要なことです。IASコアスタンダード承認については、IOSCO（証券監督者国際機構）WP1（第一部会）で検討をしてきているわけですが、その場でも当然日本の主張をしてきてくれていると思います。
　ところで日本の会計基準を英訳したものは簡単に手に入るのでしょうか？これは意外に手に入らないもので、私が知っているサイトでは龍谷大学の川村先生のサイト

くらいです。やはり日本の主張をするためには、まず日本の基準を知ってもらう必要があり、そのためにはまず英訳した豊富な資料が必要です。その英訳も国際会議において、正しく伝わるものでなくてはなりません。これは言うは易く、なかなか難しいことでしょう。ただ、会議の参加者は各国の会計士もしくは金融監督関係の役人でしょうから、聞く側も相当な知識を持っているでしょうけど。そういう意味では「HI-CONTEXT」であるとは言えますね。

　出光興産が株式公開を見送ったということは少し前に日経(？)で読みましたが、出光は自社の過小資本(増資前10億円)からか、米格付け会社から投機的格付けの烙印を押されたことにショックを受けていたようです。
　一方では、銀行の自己資本比率の国際統一基準と言える「BIS規制」において、貸出先の信用格付けに応じて所要自己資本に差をつけるという改正がおこなわれようとしています。
　BIS(国際決済銀行・Bank of International Settlements)規制とは、'88に開かれた銀行規制監督委員会の決定が発端で定められたもので、細かいことを抜きにしてごく簡単に言うと「国際業務をおこなう銀行の自己資本比率は、８％以上に維持しなくてはならない。」ということです。(日本には海外融資から撤退する銀行や地銀は４％でいい、というローカルールがありますが。)ただし、
自己資本比率＝自己資本÷資産
における資産の部分につき、risk asset ratioを用いて算出します。具体的には、各資産をリスクに応じて分類しウェイト付けして加算しますので、保有している資産のリスクウェイトが高いほど自己資本比率も低くなることになります。改正前の８％ルールは大まかに言うと次のような区分になっています。
①OECD政府国債等　０%(リスクなし)
②OECD国内の銀行向債権　1.6％(リスクウェート20％)
③その他債権　８％
　つまり、一般の民間企業に貸し出せば、それが財務的に健全な企業に対する貸付であっても、債務超過に陥っている企業に対する貸付であっても同様にリスクウェートは100％となっているということです。それはおかしいだろう、ということ(実はUSにおける銀行の資産劣化が影響。U.S.VS欧州の対立が明確化してるんですが)でBIS規制見直し案では①外部の信用評価機関の格付けを利用する。(ムーディーズ、S&Pとか)②0～150％のリスクウェートを設定する。(B-未満の格付けでは150％)とされています。(ただ、100％を超えるリスクウェートを設定しなくてはならない、というのは倒産会社への追加融資とか？)
　また、改正案では不動産担保は保全として認めないとされ、不動産担保によるリスク削減は認められていません。土地本位制の日本(の銀行)にとってこれは大打撃なのですが、無担保与信主力のUS(NYなどは別としても、土地なんか余ってますもんね。)では影響は軽微です。
　BIS規制に関してはあくまでも銀行の問題ではありますが、間接金融主体の日本企業にとって、BIS規制改正の影響から免れることはできず、業績回復を目指すにあたって厳しい要素であると言えるでしょう。

　　まだ私が学生だった頃は、有明テニスの森へ行くには車かバスしかありませんでしたが、今や有明は非常に便利な場所になりました。最近では、地下鉄南北線や大江戸線などが延伸し(する予定で)、山手線の内側で駅から遠いというところは少なくなっています。
　行くのに便利になる、ということは人の往来が多くなるということで、それを嫌ってその場所(穴場)を自分の居場所にしてきた人たちには、あまり喜ばしいことではないのかもしれません。(アクセス向上→大衆化)
　さて、新駅開業後もどの駅からも歩いて10分以上かかる地域には次のような場所があるそうです。(日経流通調査)

　昨日の日経産業新聞に、日産自動車が系列解体をすすめている旨の記事が載っていました。それによりますと、ゴーン氏は「ケイレツは一つのビジネスの手法だが、日産ではうまく機能していない。」とし、市光工業に続きカルソニックカンセイ、池田物産と中核部品メーカーが外資の傘下に入る見通しとなったようです。
　カルソニックとカンセイが合意合併を発表したのは昨年の三月、そこに高速道路システムや複合部品の開発を託し、当時副社長の南氏は「カルソニック株、カンセイ株は手放さない。」と断言したのが、わずか一年半で180度進路が変わりました。その間、系列養護派と推進派の綱引きがあったようですが、養護派によれば「ゴーン氏は『カンセイ』と他の系列内装品メーカーの『河西(カサイ)工業』とを勘違いしていた。」などという笑うに笑えない話もあったようです。
　これは私が間違っているかもしれないのですが、日産はその技術を系列に開発させている部分があり、ハイパーCVTなどの技術も系列が基本部分を開発した、ということを聞いたことがあります。また、カルソニックは売上の７割を日産に依存、役員も過半数が日産出身といういわゆる典型的な日本的系列会社(天下り人事の受け皿・株式持合い)であったと聞きます。果たして今回の系列整理でカルソニック、カンセイはもとより、(矛盾を系列に振り向けていた？私の勝手な想像です。すみません。)日産自体も体力を回復できるのでしょうか？事実、合併前にカルソニックは日産とルノーが車体を共有化する小型車のエアコンの受注でルノーに近い仏ヴァレオ社に敗れたそうです。
　日産は今後系列を解体して、何を構築しようとしているのでしょうか？日本におけるモノ作りというものはドライな関係で成立するのか、生産拠点自体が日本からなくなってしまうのか、今後の日産がそれを示してくれそうです。

　今日も日経平均が16,000円台で推移しており、20,000円台への回復は厳しい状況です。これに対し、今年の４月に実に30銘柄もの入れ替えをおこなった影響が強い、もはや日経225はベンチマークとしての機能をもはや果たしていない、といった批判が相次いでいます。入れ替えの効果で証券会社の自己売買部門が潤い、日経平均連動投信などの購入者が割を食ったようです。
　私の知る限り、日経225において一度に30銘柄も入れ替えた前例はなく、松坂屋や東宝などが除外され、日商岩井・熊谷組がなどが補充された(入れ替え６社）のが最も多かったのではないかと思います。この大きな入れ替えについては、指数の連続性が失われること、指数自体の性格の変化や恣意性の問題などが指摘されています。また、日経225自体、一株あたりの価格差や時価総額の大きさを考慮できないなどの点も問題となっています。
　ただ、これらの点は日経平均の性格からいって今に始まったことではなく、ダウも含めて平均法の持つ特性といえるのではないかと思います。ただし、ダウと異なり、日経平均の場合はあらゆる業種の銘柄が一様に採用されている（た？）部分で影響が異なりますが。
　今回の銘柄入れ替えに関し日経当局は「IT革命による産業構造の変化に対応した。これまで入れ替えが少なかったのは、産業構造の変化が小さかったため。」としています。ただ個人的にはいわゆる「品薄株」(品川白煉瓦、ホーネンなどの除外・若干今さらという気がしますが)の是正という観点もあったのではないか、と感じます。３年位前(だったかな？)にあった外国投資家の品薄株をターゲットにした指数コントロールについてはまた別の機会に書きたいと思います。

　さて、日経平均ですが若干誤解されている方もいらっしゃる可能性がありますので、ごく簡単に算出方法を書きますと、
日経平均＝東証１部に上場されている銘柄の中から採用された225銘柄(市場流動性が高いなどの観点から選ばれる)の株価合計／除数
であり、この除数は2000年４月24日銘柄入れ替え時点で20.341となっています。(ちなみに旧除数は10.180でした。)つまり「日経平均とは、チョイスされた225銘柄の単純平均株価ではない」のです。昭和24年の証券取引所再開時まで遡及して計算されたときは、単純平均株価だった(よって算出当初の除数は225)のですが、その後指標としての連続性を保つために除数が変更されてきています。
　除数の修正は権利落ちや銘柄入れ替えなどの時に発生します。以下に単純な例を示します。

日経平均が３銘柄から算出されるとする。
株価　A社1,000円 B社1,500円　C社2,000円
(1,000＋1,500＋2,000)÷３＝1,500
①株式分割の場合
B社が株式分割により、１株を２株に分割
この場合、株価は１／２となるが、株数は２倍となるので、実体は変化していない。事象の発生前後で指数の値が変化しないようにするためには
(1,000＋750＋2,000)÷ｙ＝1,500
を成立させるｙを求めればいい。このｙが新除数となり、例でいえば2.5ということになる。ちなみに
(1,000＋750＋2,000)÷３＝1,250
となり、1,500÷1,250＝1.2を「修正倍率」といい、修正倍率×新除数は元の除数となる。もっと言えば、日経単純平均に修正倍率を掛けると日経225となる。
②銘柄入替えの場合
A社を株価2,500円のD社に入替え
(2,500＋1,500＋2,000)÷ｚ＝1,500
を成立させるｚ＝４が新除数となる。

ちなみに４月に入替えがおこなわれた時の実際は、
４月21日日経平均終値 18,252.68円
185,812.3円(旧225銘柄株価合計)／10.180(旧除数)≒18,252.68円

　今年も夏の甲子園大会が暑い中、おこなわれています。球児には、高校３年間、いやここまでの野球人生の努力の結晶をこの大舞台でいかんなく発揮してもらいたいものです。
　さてこれは友人のネイティブに教えてもらった話です。この甲子園大会で敗れますと、甲子園の土をシューズケースなどに詰めて持って帰るのは見慣れた光景ですが、これは米占領下にあった沖縄代表校が戦後初参加した時に、「本土の土」を持って帰ったことが始まりであることは有名なところですね。それでここから聞いた話なんですが、友人のネイティブによれば「沖縄に帰る船の中で、米軍がその土を取り上げて、海にばらまいた。」ということなんです。敢えて理由を挙げるとすれば検疫の問題があったのかもしれませんが、当時の沖縄の状況、更に現在に至るまでの日米の関係を考えればそう素直には取れませんね。友人のネイティブも非常に遺憾に感じ、「アメリカ人でもいい人と悪い人がいる。あ、私はいい人ね、もちろん。」と言ってました。
　何だかんだ言われながらも、高校生の野球大会が盛大に行われること自体の尊さを感じます。

The phrase going off the chart,of course,means increasing rapidly,if you think of a line graph showing trends and the lines going up and up and up rapidly to the stern of the chart,that's the idea of going off the chart.

Perks is the word most people use.I've even heard some native English speakers who didn't realize that perksquisite was the actual full word.But perks are extra special benefits that come along with your job or position.
(7)oldsters
Oldsters,of course,are senior citizens or older people.I've even heard them called seasoned citizens.

　和歌山ラーメンのブームからすっかり醤油豚骨が主流になった感がありますが、個人的にはそろそろ食べ飽きてきたような気がします。確かにおいしいんですけどね。
　先日福岡に行ったときも深夜「元祖長浜ラーメン」で通常の豚骨ラーメンを食べましたが、なかなかおいしかったです。代田の「な○で○か○で○」とはちょっと比べものにならない？ように個人的には思いました。福岡の友人が送ってくれた「やまや」さんの博多ラーメンはまだ冷蔵庫に眠っていますが、あの明太子で有名なやまやさんの商品だけに、非常に楽しみです。ふくやさんでもラーメンを出してるのかな？
　さてこれは好みがあると思うんですけど、もし「醤油のしょっぱさが好き」という方であれば広島「かき醤油ラーメン」をおすすめしたいと思います。これは偶然広島駅構内のお土産屋さんで見つけたもので、㈱アサムラサキさんから発売されています。(断っておきますが、私は発売元の関係者でもまわし者でもありません。）私としてはこのスープにはちぢれ麺の方が合うんじゃないかなあという印象を持ちますが(商品はストレート麺)、それでもなかなかの味です。
　ラーメンの特集は低予算で番組が作れるとあって、テレビ局にとっても「おいしい」ネタのようですが、私のような単なるラーメン好き(かといって有名店をまわったり、調査したりするほどではなく、単に好きなだけ)にとっても楽しいものですね。私が記憶しているところでは荻窪ラーメン戦争「丸福VS春木屋VS佐久信」あたりが最初だった(私も隣の駅が最寄りだったので)と思いますが。丸福と言えば西荻の南口(松屋角を右折・居酒屋屋台戎隣り・今もあるのかな？)にも支店があり、ここは当時も空いててよく食べたんですが、青梅街道沿いの方の丸福(駅に近い方の丸福じゃない)とはちょっと味が違うんですよね。もう長いこと荻窪のラーメン屋さんには行ってませんがその後どうなんでしょうか。
　ついでになんですが、そばのめんつゆで絶品なのが、福岡県の飯塚市という所にある(らしい)一番食品で作っている「きわみ」。これはそば屋さんでもなかなかこの味は出ないと思います。

　皆さんはJIVEという缶コーヒーを覚えていらっしゃいますでしょうか？私はこのJIVE、なかなか好きだったので、絶版になってしまったのが残念でした。
　さてJIVEの後継者として登場したFIRE(キリン・ビバレッジ）が、発売以来JIVEの前年同月実績を９０％以上上回り続けているそうです。缶コーヒーの市場では、ジョージア（日本コカ・コーラ）とボス（サントリー）が圧倒的なシェアを持っているようですが、FIREもまた売れ行き好調のようです。
　このFIREと同じように、現在売れ行き好調の商品に、VAIO（SONY）、DAKARA・ボトル缶（サントリー）、フレイア（鐘紡）が挙げられるのですが、これらの商品の共通項は何でしょうか？日経流通によれば、キーワードは「触感」だ、とされています。これらの商品はFIREやVAIOのようにそれとわかるくぼみで商品への愛着を消費者に持たせたり、DAKARA（飲むときの触感）フレイア（サイズを女性の手に合わせた）など使い勝手の良さを追求したりして、消費者に支持されているとか。特にFIREは商品の企画会議の時に、男性社員がジッポを持っていて思いついたということで、ヒット商品開発のヒントはそこらじゅうに転がっていることのいい例と言えるでしょう。

　ここのところサッカーばかりやっているのですが、日中やるとさすがにクラクラしますね。立っているだけでもけっこうくるものがあるのに、走りまくらなきゃなんないですもんね。本当にＪリーガーはすごいと思います。この暑い中、デーゲームでしかも集中力をきらさず、かつ運動量もものすごいものがありますからね。ジュビロのゴン中山のあのエネルギッシュさはどこからくるのでしょうか。
　今日はナイターだったので、まだましでしたが、それでも汗だくだくでした。今ではプレー中に水分を摂取するのは当たり前ですが、昔部活をやってた時なんか「水飲んじゃダメッ！」って世界でしたもんねー。思えば非効率な練習をやってたと思います。そうした非効率な練習によって、本来鍛えなきゃいけない部分とか、技術的にレベルアップする必要がある箇所を向上させる時間をつぶしていたんだろうなあ。
　しかしながら、やはり最も重要なのは心の持ちようだなと感じます。夏の甲子園が始まりましたが、ハナから「野球をやれればいいや。」という選手と「絶対甲子園へ行きたい。」という気持ちを強く持っている選手では、技術的部分もさることながら、目標に向かう姿勢が違いますものね。まず気持ちがなければ、何事もなかなか上達しないということでしょう。

　キャッシュフロー重視の経営の必要性が叫ばれてから久しくなりました。キャッシュフローにもいろいろな段階がありますが、例えばFCF(フリーキャッシュフロー)を取り上げてみましょう。FCFは以下のように算出されます。
FCF＝税引後営業利益＋減価償却－運転資本※の増加－設備投資－関係会社投融資
※運転資本＝棚卸資産＋売上債権－買入債務
　非常に乱暴な定義をすると、商売をやって最終的にいくら手元にお金が残ったか、ということを表します。ここで注意しなければならないのは、借金の元本や預金した金額などはカウントされていない(利息は計算に入っている)ことで、いわばFCFは償還財源と言えると思います。
　今まで日本の多くの企業では、増収増益路線で経営がおこなわれてきたのですが、その背景には設備投資がかさんだり、在庫増などによる運転資本の増加、そして借金依存体質がありました。そのため「勘定あって銭足らず」という状況になってしまったことは、私がここに書くまでもなく、多くのところで語られているところです。
　しかしながら、そうは言っても期間損益の重要性が低下したわけではなく、企業は配当という株主への利益還元をしていかなくてはなりません。要するに問題は利益↑が巨額の資本を使用しておこなわれる場合、そのためにCFが不足し、常に資本調達をしなければ経営が成立しないケースです。CFをうまない利益はいわゆる「帳簿上の利益」にしか過ぎず、現金の裏づけがないということは有利子負債(借金など)の拡大を示します。
　こうした中で、武田薬品工業はすごいですね。無借金である上に、'96～'98年度の３年間平均の金融収支黒字額(子会社からの配当含む)が90億円に達しています。また手元流動性預金(要するに「基本的に」すぐに使用「可能」なお金で、かつ借金ではないもの。但し経営判断からすればこれよりは減る。)も5,400億円ほどあるとのことで、財務体質は非常にいいと言えますね。あるとこにはあるもんですねー。

　日本では誰が会計基準を決めているのでしょうか？「設定主体」という意味では、企業会計審議会ですね。(別名８条機関・国家行政組織法第８条に定められている。）審議会の会長および委員の任命権は蔵相が有していますので、審議会は蔵相に対する諮問機関ということになるでしょう。
　細かく言うと、企業会計審議会で会計基準の大枠を設定(公開草案)し、それに対する意見を求め、その結果を踏まえてJICPA(Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants・日本公認会計士協会)で関連する役所(主税局・法務省など）や産業界とコミュニケーションをはかりながら実務対応のための具体的なガイドラインとなる「実務指針」を作成・公表します。(その後Q&Aも作成します。)
　ちなみにUSでは非営利法人の財務会計財団の下におかれたFASB(Financial Accounting Standard Board・財務会計基準審議会/委員会)が「設定主体」となっており、会計基準の設定を事実上民間に委ねています。ただ米証券法上ではSEC(Securities and Exchange Commission・米証券取引委員会)に基準設定権限があり、SECが財務報告通牒(SEC Accounting Releases)によりFASBの設定する基準の強制力を裏づけています。
　日本において、この設定主体のあり方については議論を呼びました。民間に委託したほうがいいのか、それとも企業会計審議会の事務局である大蔵のスタッフ増員をした方がいいのか・・・。いずれにしても早くこの設定主体を充実する必要がありますね。(ちなみにFASBのスタッフは40名)

　梅田の夜と言えば新地を連想しますが、若い人たちは阪急東通でしょうか。（大阪に住んだことはないのでわかりませんが）さて、その阪急東通をナビオ方面から新御堂筋へ向かい、新御堂筋を渡る手前の交差点を左折すると、「キリストンカフェ」があります。いわゆるレストランバーなのですが、その名前のとおり教会を模した内装となっていて、祭壇にはマリア像まであります。雰囲気としては非常におもしろいですね。こういう店にネイティブの友人を連れて行ったらどういう風に言うかなあ、と思います。根本的に教会でお酒を飲むなんて事があるんでしょうか？私自身、関西にはネイティブの友人がいないので、関西の方でネイティブの友人(キリスト教徒)がいる方は一度一緒に行って聞いてみていただけないでしょうか。

　いつも思うのですが、どうして日本のプロ野球やＪリーグはMonday night gameをやらないのでしょうか？ＮＦＬではその節一番の注目カードは月曜日におこなわれ（他は日曜日）、Monday Night　Football('98～'05はABCが放送？）と呼ばれます。
　地上波では巨人戦しか日本ではやっていない（関西ではサンテレビで阪神も？）ことがほとんどですから、パ・リーグはぜひマンデーナイトを検討してほしいですね。一般的にセ・リーグの選手がなぜパの選手よりも知名度が高いかと言ったら、やはり地上波で巨人戦をやっていることがその理由に挙げられるでしょう。松坂やイチローをマンデーナイトで視聴者が見ることによって、他のパ・リーグの優れた選手達も認識してくれるのだと思うのですが。
　そういう意味で今日オリックスVS西武戦がＢＳで中継されたのはとてもいいことだと思います。月曜日、セ・リーグがゲームのない日にゲームをすることによって、パシフィックの野球が注目されるような方策をパ・リーグは考えてほしいです。そうしないと、工藤・小宮山・星野・伊良部・清原・野茂など本来は今でもパを支えてくれたはずの選手達を流出させてしまったように、イチロー・松坂・中村・黒木などをメジャーやセ・リーグに流出することになるでしょう。（既に中村はセに行きたがっていると聞きます。）私はセ・パどちらもファンなので、一方のリーグが衰退するようなことは残念に思うのです。そうしたことが他の一方のリーグの衰退にもつながってしまうと思いますから。

Dine out is a rather nice way to talk about eating at restaurants,not eating at home.Some people would say eat out instead of dine out or eat at restaurants.

A distinct level means the level is very clear and easy to see and understand.It's unmistakable.

　先月のやさビジの中でstakeholderの話がでましたが、おそらく松下さんはEVAの知識がおありになって解説をされていたんだと思います。
　EVAとはEconomic Value Addedの略で、税引後営業利益から有利子負債コストと株主資本コストをそれぞれの構成比で加重平均したものを控除して算出します。つまり、EVAは全資本コストを差し引いたネットの収益力を示します。EVAを経営指標に用いることによって、資本コストを上回る利益の追求がはかられることになり、結果、stakeholderとしての順位が最も下流にある株主のニーズを満たすことによって、経営陣はその課程における利害関係者のニーズを満たしていくことになるとされています。
※従業員（給料）→消費者（商品）→供給者（原料）→銀行（利子）→政府（税金）→株主（配当）
　ROEなどに替わって、EVAは今や経営指標の主流となりつつあり、日本に於いてもHOYA、花王などが導入しています。このEVAはアメリカのスターン・スチュアート社の登録商標のため、これを使ってシンクタンクに経営解析をしてもらうとかなりお値段が高いんですよねー。

　いよいよ金融商品の時価会計が始まりますね。時価会計については、販売用不動産や事業用不動産にも導入（予定）され、資産の含み益による経営が実質できなくなります。
　そもそも日本では、(大元；企業会計原則)商法・税法・証取法という企業会計における三本柱が独立しており、これらの関係をどう調整するかという視点にたってそれぞれが運用されてきたわけで、今回の時価主義に関しても昨年１月に公表された「金融商品に係る会計基準の設定に関する意見書」でも「資産の評価基準については、本基準が企業会計原則より優先する」とされました。平たく言ってしまえば、「原価主義を規定した企業会計原則については変えてないけど、金融資産・金融負債に関して一部時価主義を導入しちゃうもんねー。」ということですね。
　商法と時価主義の調整については、更にさかのぼって平成10年に「商法と企業会計の調整に関する研究会報告書」（江藤東大教授座長・岩原東大教授、大塚早大教授、岸田神戸大教授、関新日本製鉄常務など委員11名）が公表され、①（原価主義の）商法においても金融商品の時価評価の導入が望ましい、②税効果会計の採用が必要、という提言がなされ、それを受けて商法が改正されています。
　いずれにしても金融商品の時価評価は実施されることになりました。細かく言えば、金融資産の中で時価評価されるのは売買目的有価証券やデリバティブなどだけで、その他有価証券は時価評価されても資本の部へ直入されたりしますので直接P/Lには反映しませんし、満期保有債券は償却原価で評価されるためにマーケットリスクが反映されません。金融負債においてもデリバティブ取引により生ずる正味債務は時価評価されますが、その他は債務額（原価）で評価されることになります。しかしながら、この金融商品の時価会計が企業の計算書類にあたえるインパクトは非常に大きく、期末に含み益のある資産の売却に頼らない、きっちりと結果を出す経営が求められてきますね。

　メーカー・物流業界では、SCM(Supply Chain Management)の重要性を認識しており、それによってｉモードの携帯電話の供給遅れなどが発生したことは記憶にも新しいところです。
　このSCMとは、原材料調達から最終顧客に至るまでの企業間(内)の取引活動による財貨の供給を鎖に見立て、これの効率的運用をはかるマネジメントのことです。簡単に言えば、商品供給の遅延を発生させないようにする一方、できるだけ在庫コストの最小化をはかる、ということになりますね。有名なところでは、ウォルマートとＰ＆Ｇの事例、ＧＡＰの事例などがありますが、日本で有名なところでは○ニ○ロのFR社が挙げられるでしょうか。
　FRでは製品の加工を中国でおこなっていますが、これは例えばニットの関税が16％もかかるところに目をつけ、日本からニットやボタンなどの服飾素材を日本から輸出し、中国で加工、それを逆輸入することによって関税コストをヘッジしているんだそうです。また、需要予測がずれた場合に、よりリードタイムの短い航空機（ただしコストは船便の○倍）による輸送に切り替えるわけですが、その結果くしゃくしゃになった商品を日本で商品化（アイロン・タグつけ）するセンターで調製し、すばやく商品棚に並べるという手法をとっているようです。

　全国野球場行脚・関西版の最終地はやはり阪神甲子園球場ですね。今まで、福岡ドーム、大阪ドーム、名古屋ドーム、広島球場、神戸GS（行った順）と行ったことはありましたが、やはり甲子園を抜きに日本の球場は語れないでしょう。
　ということで、昨日は阪神対中日戦を甲子園に見に行きました。私は高校野球も含めて甲子園には行ったことがなく、いつか行きたいなあと思っていたのがようやく実現しました。球場内で歌われる六甲おろしや７回裏の風船上げ（？）はライブで見るとすごいですね。広島球場でも風船上げをやっていましたが、やはり本場甲子園は球場が大きいせいかとてもきれいでした。

The phrase no roof over your head means you have no home.It doesn't mean you're roofless.Roofless would mean your house is missing its roof.
(6)3.5 million people
That would be much more common in conversations.
(7)take a hard line against something
If you take a hard line against something,you're strictly against it,you're probably pretty strongly disapproving of whatever you take a hard line against.
(8)Rounding them up and running them out of town won't solve the problem.
I think this is what happens a lot and why some people are trying to help homeless people more.Often the police just move them away from the neighborhood,so the people living there feel like the problem has been solved.Actually it's just been moved somewhere.I think that's another reason people object to this kind of a solution.They're treating homeless people like cattle.

　昨日のうちに福岡に入り、今日は高知です。広末涼子ちゃんの看板がやけにあるなあ、と思ったら、彼女、高知出身なんですよね。四国は私は初めてで、ゆっくり滞在したいところだったのですが、今回は時間がなく、どこも見ることはできませんでした。はりまや橋くらいは見たかったんだけどなあ。
(1)as good as
Something that's as good as something else the way Gene uses this phrase means in reality or in effect,the way it actually works even if that's not officially the way it's recognized.
(2)whack
Whack is a verb that means hit something in a way that makes a very large sound,kind of echoing move, reverberating kind of a sound.So being whacked or getting whacked is being attacked.
(3)make a rule
If you make something a rule, you make it a rule for yourself.You decide you're going to do something that way every time.
(4)hideaway
Hideaway is a small private place,usually somewhere you consider very comfortable for relaxing that other people don't know about.
(5)cardboard box
Cardboard boxes in English often means the kind of corrugated paper box.Sometimes we just call corrugated boxes,the heavier kind of cardboard that's used for packing.When I first came to Japan,I had a little trouble because cardboard is a kind of heavy paper really.But corrugated boxes is a different word in Japanese so for a long time I had no idea what to say.

(7)rough sleeping
I think in the UK,they tend to use the phrase,rough sleeping or sleeping rough,meaning sleeping in the parks or on the streets or in empty buildings.
(8)help
I think the kind of support they'll receive is more training kinds of support,how to look for a job,how to apply for a job,and be successful in an interview.It might also teach them good work habits.If they've grown up even part of their lives homeless,they haven't had parents or other adults to serve as models of how to go to work every day and be on time and dress right.

　今日は山口宇部までやってきました。羽田から１時間30分くらいのフライトだったのですが、天気もよく快適でした。
　山口県には学生の頃、北九州に行った時に関門トンネルの人道を通って下関側に渡ったのが唯一の滞在経験で、今回が二度目になります。宇部は宇部セメントで有名で、空港内には宇部市のPRコーナーもありました。空港から小郡まで行きましたが、時間もそんなにかかりませんでした。小郡駅で気がついたのですが、ここから萩・津和野に電車（SL？）で行けるんですね。残念ながら空港からは秋吉台も含め観光地にバスは出ていないということで、もし観光で来た場合はレンタカーしかないわけでちょっと不便かなあ、と思いました。

A prettied-up neighborhood would be a neighborhood that's undergone gentrification or urban renovation.They make it look nicer.
(6)count You don't count is a phrase that means you don't matter,you're not important.If we were counting up the important people,we wouldn't count you.
(7)lump together with
If you lump something together with something else,it means you don't really care about it,you just put it into the category because it's convenient.
(8)the other side of the coin
There's a phrase in English there's two sides to every coin meaning there's more than one way to understand the situation.If you look at it from the other side,it might look completely different.So Gene is saying that now that he is in the other category,he understands it differently.
