今回のトヨタカップは残念ながら観ることはできませんでしたが、「元祖ＲＥＤＳ」のマンチェスターユナイテッドが勝ったようですね。国立ではさぞかしすばらしいプレーの連続だったことでしょう。生で近くで観ると、サッカーのうまさが実感できますよね。'99/11/29
浦和レッズのＪ２降格が決まってしまいました。日本一のサポーターを擁するレッズの降格は非常に残念ですが、来年必ずやＪ２で優勝し、Ｊ１へ帰ってきてくれることを期待しています。ＦＯＲＺＡ ＲＥＤＳ！

・sleep deprivation；deprivation is the noun form of deprive meaning you can't get what you need and being kept from you..Sleep deprivation is what results from not being able to able to sleep.

今日は河口湖のフルマラソンレースに行きました。が、今年は忙しくて４月の小笠掛川フルマラソンを走った後は１回も練習していないので、参加した会社のメンバーのサポートをしました。毎年きつい思いをして走り、前のランナーの後ろ姿しか見ていませんでしたので、今回前から各ランナーの表情を見ることができてなかなかおもしろかったです。サポートとはいっても場所を移動したので、私自身もかなり走りましたが、ドリンクなどの入ったデイパックを背負って走るのはなかなかきついですね。それと走っている分にはいいのですが、さすがにこの時期の河口湖はかなり寒く、気温もヒトケタの低い方ですから、風邪をひきそうになります。来年はたぶんまた走る方にまわると思いますが、同日におこなわれるつくばマラソンにも参加してみたいなあと考えています。
今年は上岡龍太郎さんも初参加し、制限時間の５時間ぎりぎりでゴールしたようです。また毎年木村東吉さんが参加しているのですが、今年は一人で走っていました。昨年は目の不自由な方の伴走者として走っていましたが、そんなところがかっこいいなあと思いました。
マラソンをされる方はご存じだと思いますが、仮装ランナーが大会を盛り上げてくれます。いつも私なんかはそうした仮装ランナーに遅れをとってしまうのですが、彼らがまともに走ったらすごく速いんだろうなあと思います。今回の大会ですごいと思ったのは、１.キリンのコスチュームで走った人。ゴールするまで２メートルくらいの高さの首が折れなかった。２.スーツ、めがねのサラリーマンルックで走った人。ご丁寧にカバンまで持って走っていた。３.わらしべ長者のコスチュームで走っていた人。大きなあみ籠を背負い、何と裸足で走っていた。などです。すごいのは皆、４時間３０分以内で完走していたこと。ウーン、すごすぎる！
浦和レッズがＪ２に落ちてしまいました。レッズは市原との直接対決を制し、勝ち点的にも有利だったので、何となく大丈夫かなと思っていたんですが。個人的には福岡が一番危なく、次がジェフかなと勝手に予想していたので、意外でした。
降格の原因を横山ＧＭや原前監督に求める雰囲気がありますが、彼らなりにがんばっていたと思います。特に原さんについては自分の思うようにやれていたかどうか、疑問です。やはり一番の原因はフロントにあるでしょう。思い返せばＪリーグが始まった当初、レッズはグランパスとともに厳しい成績でした。しかし、日本一を自他ともに認めるサポーターに後押しされ、観客動員数では常にリーグでもトップクラスだったと思います。私が勝手に選ぶＪ三大クラブはレッズ、アントラーズ、エスパルスですが、その理由はそのサポーターの定着度、多さ、そしてその熱心さです。浦和はともかく、清水や鹿島のような地方中小都市であれだけの人気ということは、そのサポーターのすばらしさを認めないわけにはいかないでしょう。鹿島は日本サッカーのフランシスコザビエルとも言うべきジーコに教えを請いチーム運営・強化に努め、清水は今までジュニア世代に種を蒔いてきた結果を今に活かし、その脆弱な経営基盤を何とか生きながらえさせ、今年は優勝しました。浦和はその熱狂的なサポーターに甘え、鹿島のようなチーム強化の努力、清水のような地元選手の成長の利用をしてこなかったのではないでしょうか。
昔から浦和は清水と並ぶサッカーどころだったですし、鹿島のように例えばブッフバルトに教えを請うことだってできるはずです。今からでも遅くありません。フロントはそうした努力をしてほしいと思います。
英語に高いプライオリティを置く、というのは言うは易く行うは難し、ですね。英語に触れる時間をいかに多くするか、が私の問題で、どういう勉強法をとるかのレベルには達していません。１日平均すると、英語に触れる時間は１０分以下だと思います。ここ１年以上そんな状態で、TIMEも定期購読していますがほとんど読まずに本棚に直行です。まあこれで１級レベルに達するわけもないので、１級は最初の受験から「受けてみるかぁ〜。」みたいな状況です。仕事で使っていれば、多少英語と接する時間も増えるんでしょうけどね。
皆さんは映画「シックスセンス」をご覧になりましたでしょうか。最後の結末をここで明かしてしまうとおもしろさがかなり減少してしまうので言いませんが、そこに至るまでの伏線がそこかしこに散りばめられていて、後になって「あ、そうだったのか！」と気づかされます。私の見た今年の映画の中では「メリーに首ったけ」の次におもしろかったので、ぜひご覧下さい。

ポケモンがアメリカでも人気のようですね。今週号のTIMEでも大きく取り上げられています。しかしなぜTIMEの記事において、日本に関してネガティブに書かれているのでしょうか。今回のアニメの記事でも、どこかsercasticに感じてしまいました。友人のアメリカ人のネイティブも、「日本にはたくさんいい部分だってあるのに、こんな風にネガティブにTIMEに書かれてしまうのは非常に残念。ますますアメリカ人は日本にネガティブな印象を持ってしまう。」と日本に関する記事が出るたびに言います。
・I for one.；We use I for one meaning I and probably or maybe others,so at least me.
・do a great service；means a big help and we tend to use the phrase for something very big or something a large scale.If it is just helping friends,then you pribably say be a big help.
・I wonder；We often use I wonder,if I'm not sure,so we're just imaging the situation.
・on hand；means available or easy to get.It's not only used for the person on hand but also for objects some small useful things you can get easily.
・take the course for academic credit；In US and also in UK,you can do the course for academic credit meaning that the works you get the course for count final degree,so you need to get a number of credits to pass your degree.
・breakdown；the word breakdown here comes from the phrasal verb to break down.And breakdown shows the details make up the whole picture.It's used especially with numbers of figures,for example,in the result of the survey that would be the breakdown of people asked.

Ｊリーグでやっとエスパルスが優勝しました。一時期はチームの存続も危ぶまれていた日本有数のサッカーどころの市民チームの優勝は、ジェフやベルマーレなど存続を危ぶむ声が聞かれるチームのサポーターにも勇気を与えてくれたことと信じたいと思います。

・gasp；is breath taking it is difficult for your pain.So the last gasp means the absolutely last breath or dying breath of animals.
・in tears；means to cry.I might think we tend to use in tears more in conversation than cry.Cry can sound childish action wheras in tears would be used for adults in such situation.
・make a difference；not only means make a change but it's usually used for something good.It means make an improvement or make the situation better.
・that's what something is for；is very useful phrase when we want to explain the purpose of something or its usefulness.We might say that's the friends are for or that's the money is for.
・man；the verb man here means to operate it or use the equipment.We use it particularlyfor giving some kind of service or in an emergency situation,for example,in a war the soldiers would man the ship.
・dispense；We usually use dispense when we're talking about giving out medicine,for example,at the pharmacy or drug store,then giving out medicine.Here is the little different but the same basic idea the hot line giving solace and the support as it is a kind of medicine to help you.
絵本作家の五味太郎さんが、自分の卒業した小学校を訪れて臨時教師になる、という番組をNHKの教育でやっていましたが、とてもおもしろかったです。五味さんの絵本は今まで見たことがなかったんですが、そのポップな語感と絵の独特のタッチは、大人が見ても楽しいと思います。さて、番組の内容なのですが、私の印象に残ったのは次の二つの質問を子供たちにしたことです。
まず一つめ。算数、音楽などいろいろな教科を言って、その教科が嫌いかを子供たちに訊ねていきます。またその理由も聞いていきます。そして最後に「嫌いなことを我慢していくらやっても、そんなにうまくなったり得意なものになったりしないもんなんだよ。人生は８０年くらいだとすると、もう君たちは１０年使っちゃったんだ。残りの時間を考えて、迷うことなく好きなことをやろうよ。」
二つめ。うさぎとかめの話を出します。ここで質問。「うさぎとかめだったら、どう考えてもうさぎの方が速いよな。このクラスで一番足の速いのはだれ〜？」「ハーイ。」と一人の男の子Ａクン。「じゃ、前に出てー。それからこのクラスで一番走るのが苦手なのは？」「ハーイ。」と男の子Ｂクン。「おいＢクン。君からＡクンにかけっこしよう、って言うか？」「言いませーん。」「おいＡクン、君はＢクンとかけっこで勝負しようって言うか？」「ウーン、言わないかな。」「じゃ、ここでみんなに質問です。うさぎはなぜかめに、まともにやったら勝つに決まっている勝負をしよう、って言ったんだろ？かめはなぜ負けるとわかっている勝負を受けて立ったんだろ？」「勝負しようって言ったときのうさぎはどんな顔をしてたと思う？」
私にとっても、おもしろい授業でした。
日本には大学の講師からワーキングホリディで来ている若者まで、数多くのネイティブの英語教師がいますね。友人のネイティブでオフィシャルな形で来日している人間によれば、「日本の文部省はアメリカの大学のmasterを持っていれば、問題なく採用しちゃうのはどうかと思う。問題はその先にもあって、授業内容や学生の上達度なんかはチェックしないしね。だから、熱意を持って努力するかしないかは、そのネイティブ講師の気持ち一つになっちゃうわけ。もしやる気のない講師にあたったら、学生の方がかわいそう。同僚の講師でもそういう人間がいるから、注意するんだけど、ね。」とのこと。このことの他にも文部省の問題点について（当然英検の出題方式や二次試験の採点方法の批判、さらには英検の存在意図自体も批判していましたが）話してくれましたが、また次回書きたいと思います。
いよいよ明日は２次試験ですね。各級を受験される皆さん、がんばってください。
さてうれしいニュースとして、ジュビロ磐田がアジアスーパーカップを制し、サッカーのアジアクラブナンバー１になりました。これによって2001年に開催される、世界クラブ選手権への出場が決定しました。今までは日本で開催されるトヨタカップが世界クラブナンバー１（欧州でこれを認めるかどうかは議論があると思いますが）とされてきましたが、この大会が2000年に第一回大会として開催されることによって、名実ともに世界クラブのナンバー１を選ぶ画期的大会がいよいよ始まったことになります。サッカーのワールドカップでさえイングランドが初期の頃これを世界選手権と認めず、不参加であったことを考えると、この大会が回数を重ねる毎に重要さを増していくことが想像されます。この大会に出場するためには、まずアジアクラブ選手権もしくはアジアカップウィナーズカップを征することが出発点で、その上でアジアスーパーカップに勝つことが要求され、アジアに出ていくための予選ともいうべきＪリーグもしくは天皇杯制覇が世界への扉の第一歩となったことになります。
ゴンがトシヤが高原がマンチェスターＵやＡＣミラン、バルセロナそしてコリンチャンスやリバープレートなどといった世界のトップクラブ相手に走り回る姿を想像するだけでワクワクします。歴史や日本チームの世界における地位を考えれば、日本シリーズの優勝チームがヤンキース相手に選手権を賭けて闘うよりもすごいことだと思います。
昨今、日産を初めとして日本の各企業のリストラがますます加速してきました。リストラは雇用不安と見つけたり、とでも言いたくなるような首切りの多さです。ちょっと前ですが、どこかのニュース番組で「トヨタはエライ。事業が不採算であれば、すぐにクビを切ることはせず新しい職場が確保できるよう、事業展開を考えている。」と言っていた人がいましたが、非常に問題意識が低いのではないでしょうか。
確かに経営者として日産よりもトヨタの方が結果からすれば優れていたのかもしれません。私も日本企業においては経営者の質を上げることが非常に重要だと思います。もっと言えば、経営者としての評価基準をもっと明確化すべきだと考えます。もちろん、配当性向を欧米並に上げることも一つの評価基準ですが、同時に雇用の確保という点にも重要性はあるでしょう。
しかし、それとともに今必要なのは、税法の改革だと考えます。法人税の基本通達には、子会社の整理・再建として認められる場合においては債権放棄をおこなっても有税とはしない旨の規定がありますが、こうした規定を国税の担当官の裁量部分なし、つまり客観的な再建計画の統一した基準（これがないのが問題ですが）が満たされればすべからく損金算入可能とする、とするのも一つの方策だと思います。でなければ、親会社の矛盾をどこに押しつけるでしょうか。結果は「じゃ会社を整理してしまえば問題なく損金算入できちゃうから、清算しちゃおうか。」ということになり、雇用が確保されなくなってしまうことになります。
最近の合併劇の裏側にはいつも雇用の問題がつきまとっていて、その矛盾をどこに持っていくのか、「ケイレツ」が崩れ去ろうとしている今、政府は本当に柔軟に対応をしていってほしいと思います。

・clout；is a word which means influence or power,it's often used in relationship to politics or politicians.I'm not very surprised at the airline has no clout in the doctor-patient relation.It seems to me it's the pretty confidential kind of relationship,most patient don't want medical information getting out,this fact I know.
・across our fingers；In the US,when you across your fingers,it's usually the second finger across the first finger,it means you're hoping for good luck.Sometimes people need a lot of luck,they say cross your fingers and your toes.
・express appriciation；is another example of the phrase that sounds much more formal, when people usually use,yo would simply say thank.
・sweetheart；sometimes the word is used for people you care about a lot,but often it's used just for very kind people.
・fill us in on；in this case,Lee used the more colloquial phrase.If you want to make it more formal,you could say thank you for informing us of all this.
どうやらテレビ番組「愛する２人別れる２人」のヤラセが問題となっているようですね。以前、猿岩石のユーラシア大陸ヒッチハイクの時も問題になりましたね。
私も学生の頃エキストラを二年間ほどやっていたんですが、時代劇、特にNHKあたりのドラマですとプロダクションでもいろいろなことにナーバスになっていて、大河ドラマなど時代劇の場合、エキストラに絶対にマニキュアなどをつけないように注意していたもんです。水戸黄門のバックに飛行機雲が、なんて笑い話も昔はありましたよね。
テレビ局に限らず、朝日新聞がわざと珊瑚礁に傷をつけたというようなこともありました。結局、そうしたマスメディアが民間法人で利益追求団体である以上、こういうことはなくならないんだと思います。ニュースなどで「公の電波が〜」なんて言っていますが、そうであればTBSはあれだけ不祥事を続けたのですから、放送局をやめるなんてことは言わないまでも少なくとも社長は引責辞任すべきだと思います。
このようにマスメディアがさまざまな不祥事を続けてきたのは今に始まったことではないでしょう。そろそろ視聴者も情報の受け手としての認識を改める時が来たのではないでしょうか。なぜなら、今、人々はインターネットという手段を所有することにより、情報の発信者に簡単になれる時代が来たからです。発信者に自らがなることによって、受信者としての自分を顧みる機会を与えられたということが言えるのではないでしょうか。
今週号だったか先週号だったか忘れましたが、TIMEの特集記事「BEYOND２０００」は興味深かったですね。まさに英検の二次試験用のトピックの宝庫とでも言っていいような感じでした。私は時間がなく、全部はとても読み切れませんが、気に入った物は久しぶりに読んでみました。特にクローン人間の記事は近未来のこととしてリアリティが非常に高く、興味深く読みました。個人的には私はクローン人間は、試験管ベビーと異なり、絶対に反対です。試験管ベビーは不妊症に悩む夫婦のための解決策として有用だと思いますし、その濫用さえくい止められれば問題はそんなに大きくないのではないか、と思いますが、クローン人間は人間の存在そのものに関わってくる重大な変化であると思います。
昨日は毎年恒例のパリーグ東西対抗を観戦に球場まで行きました。このゲームはもう何年も続いていて、私は毎年見に行っていますが、印象深いプレーがいつもありますね。記憶に残っている選手は何人かいますが、特に野茂と西崎の投げ合い、イチローのホームランなど特に覚えています。しかし個人的にMIPだと思っているのは、オリックスの藤井選手で、なぜかというと何年か前に外野席で見ていたときにボールをいくつもくれたからなんですね。その藤井選手、今年は来なかったんですが、来年は来てね。しかし西武の松坂投手って初めて見たんですが、腰回りとかすごいですね。イチロー選手と話している機会があったのですが、イチロー選手がプロの選手としては細身なことをのぞいても、かなり重量感がありました。

・serious help；means help that can really work,someone really knows what they're doing,so they can support you in a very good way.
・onboard；please take a close look it onboard,it's used as an adjective, so there is no space between on and board,if you use board as a noun meaning that someone is on the place,then there should be space between the two words.
・crises；crises is the plural for crisis,there are few words in English that change from sis to ses in the plural,crisis-crises,diagnosis-diagnoses.
・landing strip；is another way to talk about runway.
給料のことを考えますと、現在はまだまだ年功序列の部分が残っていて、年齢の若い人は比較的安い給料に甘んじるわけですが、これからますます実力主義賃金体系に変わっていくことでしょう。とすれば、我々３０台の人間は一番割をくうことになってしまうと思います。でもこれだけ不景気ですとリストラでクビになって職を失うより、または会社が倒産してしまうよりはまだ給料が出るだけましか、と自分を納得させてしまいがちです。企業は先行きの見えない不況感に、どうしてよいかわからず、ただ業績は悪化しているので、リストラという名の下に人減らしに躍起になっています。リストラというのは単なる首切りではないはずなのに、それ以上の事業の再構築のビジョンが経営的に示されている社はそう多くないでしょう。どうやって自分を付加価値の高い人間にしていくか、本当に難しいことですが、本気で取り組まなくてはなりません。
日経ビジネスの新聞広告で「もう新卒はいらない」というショッキングなタイトルを見つけました。私の大好きな映画、マイケルＪフォックスの「摩天楼はバラ色に」にも「経験のない大卒はお断り。」と面接でことごとく落とされるシーンがありました。今までの日本の一般的な企業では新入社員教育を一から行い、特にOJTで育てていくようなところがありましたが、もはやそれではこの時代の変化についていけないということなのでしょうか。労働者にとっても厳しい時代となりましたが、企業にとっても魅力のないところには厳しい時代となりそうですね。
先日の日経の広告欄にコスモ証券の広告が載っていたんですが、そこに写真付きで掲載されていたポートフォリオマネージャーはじめ、スタッフの学歴がすごい、と思いました。東大→シカゴ大MBA、早大→ハーヴァードMBA、慶大→ミシガン大MBA・・・。日本の方の学歴はともかく、アメリカの一流MBAを履修し、かなりの知識を持ち、おそらく何千万円プレーヤーなんでしょうね。実力をつける、そのために英語を学んでアメリカMBAを取得する、そしてそれが発揮される場を探す、日本もアメリカのようにサラリーネゴシエイションや転社がもっと当たり前の時代が来るのでしょうか。
私は高校２年生くらいまでは両眼とも1.0以上あって、父親が近眼な割には視力はよかったんですが、高３の時に受験勉強したせいか（？）急に目が悪くなりました。最近は本当に悪くなって、特に右目は0.1の「Ｃ」が判定できません。（目を細めてやっと、という感じです。）当然めがねということになるわけですが、めがねって面倒くさいんですよね、これが。 ・a surge；has the opposite meaning of taking a nosedive,it means sudden and strong increase.It can be used to describe numbers,a surge on profits,for example,or so feelings you can have a surge of anger.

今日の日経にベンチャー企業調査の今年度見通しが出ていましたが、ANJO.INTN'Lの伸びはすごいですね。CPA人気に支えられているのでしょうが、この不景気・国際化の時代にこうした資格の人気が高まるのは当然で、むしろ自然なことかもしれません。また経団連が米国会計基準による財務諸表を国内でも容認するよう会計士協会へ提言をするようで、わざわざ日米二つの財務諸表をつくる煩雑さを考えれば当然でしょう。このような要請の中で、CPA人気は更に高まるでしょう。

英検の結果が届きました。結果は８５点で不合格Ａ。まあ自分としては、こんなもんだろうという感じです。やさビジを集中もせずに聴くだけという、こんな勉強量で受かってしまったら、自分のためにもならないなと思っていましたので、残念という気はしていません。それにしても語彙パートが悪すぎるので、ここを改善しないとなかなか合格は難しいですね。後はリスニングの筆記部分ですか、これは練習ゼロでやっているので仕方ないですが、練習次第では何とかなるかなと思います。いずれにしても、勉強の時間が足りないこと、そんな余裕のないことが一番の問題ですね。

ベレ出版から発行されている「TOEIC TEST ９００点突破・対策と問題」（アメリカ人の友人はこの本はBritishだから、あんまり勧めないと言っていましたが）という参考・問題集がありますが、なかなか参考になると思います。内容自体もさることながら、前書きに書かれている著者の考え方−英語でプロになるとは−には私も共感します。どこかで見たことがあるのですが、英語でしっかりコミュニケーションするためには、TOEICで９００点も取れた、ということではなくて、１割も間違えてしまったというレベルが必要だとのこと。私には全然まだまだ遠いレベルですが、わかるような気がします。
ご存じない方が多いと思うのですが、静岡では数少ない国際的なイベント「大道芸ワールドカップ」が現在開催されています。これは街を舞台に世界から様々なパフォーマー達が自分たちの芸を披露するというものでもう数年続いています。私も夜繰り出して、何人かのパフォーマンスを見ましたがなかなかおもしろかったです。火を使ったジャグラーや人形のポーズの通りにパフォーマンスする？な芸人などさまざまな大道芸を見せてくれていました。残念ながら開催は明日までですが、来年興味のある方はご覧になったらいかがでしょうか。
ダイエーの中内オーナーが直々に工藤選手に謝罪することで、工藤投手のダイエー残留の可能性が高まったようですね。私見ですが、何故オーナーが最初から工藤選手に対してしっかりと意向をを伝えなかったのでしょうか。あれだけの選手がシリーズでも活躍をしているのですから、当然に球団社長はオーナーに工藤選手の処遇についてのお伺いをたてていたはずです。おそらく、その時に何らかの指示があってそれを忠実に実行しようとしたら、それが工藤選手の希望とそぐわなかった、ということでしょう。どういう指示だったのかわかりませんが、社内事情そしてトップの人間性をそこに見たような気がします。

一週間でその週のTIME３つ以上の記事を読もうと思ったのですが、二週間目にして早くも挫折。これでは、次回の英検の語彙問題も勘に頼るしかなくなってしまいますね。何とか時間をつくらなきゃなー。

皆さん英検の二次試験はすすんでいらっしゃるでしょうか。昨日まで１次試験の自己採点はしておらず、とりあえず遅ればせながら採点してみたところ、前回より点数はよかったのですが、合格ラインを８７点前後と考え、記述式のハチャメチャぶりを考慮にいれると、まあ合格は無理かなと思います。読解を１問間違えてしまいましたが（interested inのところ）、合格されるような方はきっと満点なんでしょうねぇ。語彙のところは全部勘でやったので、当然の結果となっており（＾_＾；、またリスニングはチェックし直したところが全部最初ので合っていたということもあって客観の点数は急降下してしまいました。まあ実力通りですね。
