日本の大学教育についての問題はどういうところにあると思うか、ネイティブに聞いてみたところ、大学教育において学生を甘やかしているところにある、ということを話してくれました。私の学生時代を振り返ってみても、あまり勉強しなかった覚えはありますね。ただ最近では、講師同士で集まって、どうしたら学生が講義に興味を持ってもらえるか、というディスカッションをしようとしても、ほんの数人しか（教える側も）集まらず、また、（そんなことが本当にあるのかと思うんですが）授業に一度も出なくても、その学生に「不可」をつけることのないよう「指導」があったりするんだそうです。
アメリカの大学では、もし３回も授業を欠席することがあろうものなら、Ｃをつけられてしまったりすることで、常にプレッシャーを与えられている、とのこと。高校までの日本の教育はすごい、とする一方で、大学にはかなりの問題がある、と指摘してくれました。一概に全ての日本の大学がそうだとは限らないのでしょうけど、一般的に言えばアメリカの大学の方が厳しいと言えるのかもしれません。
「世の中ってね、タフなもんでしょ？大学出たら、自分でサバイバルしていかなきゃならないのに、日本の大学出たての２２歳って何であんなに子供なの？アメリカでは皆、高校の頃から自分で生きていくために、親から独立して自分の考えで行動するよ。こんなことってあたりまえのことじゃない？」これも日本人の２２歳の皆さん全員に当てはまることではないと思いますが・・・。

今日の日経に株式が社員の意識を変える、という記事が載っていましたが、非常に賛成です。というのは、自分が株主という立場に立ってみて考えてみれば、自ずと投資効率を考える訳で、業績を上げることが自分の利益に繋がるからです。
今まで日本のサラリーマンは年功序列と終身雇用制を保証されたものと信じ、その加護の元で愛社精神を発揮し、滅私奉公とまでは言いませんが、頑張ってきたわけです。また、会社から与えられた役職なるものを、自分の評価に置き換えてきたんだと思います。
ところが私にとってこれらは最近、非常に空虚なものに思えてきました。もはやこのようなマジックでは手の内が見えてしまっているのです。また投資家から見ても、日本の企業のＲＯＥの低さはアメリカの企業のＲＯＥとは較べものになりません。
私は必ずしも配当性向を高めたり、「実力主義」のみで社員を評価したりすることを万能とするわけではありませんが、大手企業の再編は日本の今までの社会常識を覆すことになるかもしれない、と感じています。

先日東名の用賀料金所付近で、乗用車がトラックに追突され炎上し、乗っていた子供が亡くなるという事故がありました。聞くところによれば、トラックの運転手は飲酒しており、事故発生前にかなり左右に揺れながら走行しているのを発見した１０人程度のドライバーが、ＪＨに通報したにも関わらず、ＪＨはこれを警察に連絡せず、結果、東京バリアでこのトラックを通過させてしまい、用賀で事故が発生してしまった、ということのようです。私もよく用賀は通りますので（遊びで都内に行くときなど）、人事ではありません。それにしてもなぜこのような情報をＪＨは無視してしまったのでしょうか。残念でなりません。
私は高速道路については詳しく知りませんが、基本的に道路法による道路は道路管理者（国道管理事務所・県土木事務所・市道路管理部署などが直接の担当）によって管理されています。もしＪＨが東名を管理しているとして、ＪＨの管理責任は道路施設や道路面など物理的な部分に限定されているのでしょうか。道路には道路通行上の管理（これは警察だと思いますが。）と物理的な管理、両方がされているわけですが、今回のケースはどう判断すべきか微妙な部分があると思います。
しかしながら、管理責任がどうあろうと、この事故は発生するのを防ぐ手段は残されていたわけで、そういった意味では非常に残念です。私もたまに後ろの扉を閉め忘れているコンテナ車などを見かけることがあるのですが、どこに通報したらいいのかわかりませんし、運転中に携帯を使うわけにもいかないので、できるだけそういった車両から離れるようにしています。ＪＨにはこうした時の取るべき手段を広報してもらいたいと思います。

・downsized；of course,means he made the company smaller,but it does sound to go to especially the people who lose their jobs,sometimes people call it lightsizing instead of downsizing.
・blew up in his face；if something blows up in your face,it goes spectacularly wrong,it's not just a small problem,it not just right,it's completely and totally failed.
・I'll say.；Americans often say I'll say when they agree with something very strongly.
・restucturing；a lot of people use restructuring to mean downsizing and restructuring probably almost always includes letting them go from the company,but it's not necessarily a part of the restructuring process.
・lay off；laying people off is not quite the same thing as firing them or letting them go,often when the company lays off employees,they intend to hire them back in the future when business picks up or economy gets better,but often being laid off results in looking for a new job,because the company can't take you back later.
・get the chop；if you get the chop,you're fired.Chop is a kind of action you take,when you use an ax,so if you get the chop,it's the same thing as getting the ax,you've lost your job.
・gave him the glad hand；a glad hand,just the plant worker who is remained at the factory gave him the glad hand meaning they welcomed him and probably applauded when he came in and spoke to them,but you have to be careful using this,because it's often used ironically maybe people applauded him,but they mean actually just the same opposite.
・radical surgery；is very major surgery and if it's not undertaken,you will certainly die.In most cases,perhaps you would not like to have,for example,you will be like amputated,but if it saves your life,it's much better,that's a kind of radical surgery.
・shot up；is a phrase often used to talking about the rising or declining numbers.You could've said very simply the stock rose 40 points,but shot up is much more expressive of such a large change.
・scrabbling to snap up shares；means the investors or the traders are fighting each other working as hard as possible to get ahead of the others in order to buy as many shares as possible.
大学生の学力低下が叫ばれる中、早慶を中心とした学生のサークルが主催して「学力低下は教授のつまらない講義のせいである。」という趣旨の討論会が行われたようです。私が学生の頃を考えると、その多くはつまらない授業だったような気がしますが、聞いていておもしろい講義もありました。アメリカの有名大学では、教授自らが教壇に立つことは多くない、ということを聞いたことがありますが、日本では大学院生が講義を持つなんてことはないですよね。
大学とは教育機関なのでしょうか、それとも研究機関なのでしょうか。大学は社会の中でどう位置づけられるべきなのでしょうか。
私のネイティブの友人は日本の大学院で学んでみたい、と最初は思ったようなのですが、日本の大学院では学びたくないということで、結局アメリカに帰って学ぶことにしたそうです。（理由は・・・何となく想像がつかれると思いますが・・・。）
討論会を主催した学生の皆さんはおそらくもっと学びたい気持ちがあって、そういった会を開催されたと思いますので、とても前向きだと思います。私もそうでしたが、「何を学びたい」のではなく、「どの大学・学部が入るのに難しいか。卒業してトクをするか。」という観点で大学を選んでいる人も少なからずいるのではないでしょうか。こうしたことが授業のつまらなさと無縁ではないと思うんですけど。
ここのところ、会計の世界ではいろいろな変革が起こっていて、大きいものとしては
１；税効果会計
２；退職給付会計
３；キャッシュフロー計算書
の三つが挙げられます。今日はこのうち、退職給付会計について公認会計士協会主催のセミナーがあったので、参加しました。説明してくれた先生はアメリカの会計制度にも精通されている方で、説明は的確で非常にわかりやすかったです。
とても興味深いのは、欧米の会計システムはcorridor方式を採用している一方で、日本は採用していない点です。これは、ある数字を算出してそれが期毎にブレがあるためそれを平準化することが必要とされる場合、日本では重大な変化がないときに限り、ある数値に率をかけるときにその率が年毎に変わらなければ結果が変わっても期末に数値を変更する必要がないのに対し、欧米では結果の違いがある範囲（corridor）にはまっていれば数値を変える必要がない、逆に言えば範囲にはまっていなければ率を変えることを要求されるということです。欧米は結果で日本は入口で数値を見る、ということですが、結局「重大な変化があるかないか」は一旦計算してみなければわからないわけです。
例；
Ｘ１年度 10,000Ｘ0.5＝5,000
Ｘ２年度 11,000Ｘ0.5＝5,500
この時、欧米では差異500がcorridorの範疇かどうかを判断するのに対し、日本では率0.5が変わっていないことで本来はこの差異を認めるが基本だが、「大きな変化を生じない」という但し書きの結果、結局は一旦算出して差異500が「重大」か否かを判断せざるを得ない。
このことはcorridor方式を取り入れた方がいい・悪いの問題のではなく、ある程度の幅を持たせる部分をつくることもいいということではないか、と感じました。
今年も気がつけば、残るところあと半月になりました。今年はあっという間に過ぎてしまって、英語を勉強する時間もとれずじまいでした。思い返してみると、準１を受けたときが一番英語を勉強していたような気がします。きっと「一回で受からねば」と思ったのがよかったのでしょう。要するに「気合い」っていうことですかね。

・a hirer's market；this phrase is usually heard as a buyer's market or a seller's market meaning if you're a buyer,there are many things available,so the price is low.If it's a seller's market,many people want to buy the thing you're selling.But it's very easy to understand a hirer's market,because there is a background.
・bust；means break or force them into bankruptcy.
・Mann's last line is a technical question,but she is not using it to get an answer.This is a kind of rhetorical questions,and the purpose is to make her point very strong and draw the interest of the people who are listening.She could've just started out saying it's no good having a lot of workers if you can't hire them.
英携帯電話会社のＭ＆Ａを巡っての買収戦で、アメリカ系の二大投資銀行が争っているようなのですが、実際にそこで活躍しているのは実の兄弟の二人のフランス人で、彼らは敵味方に分かれているそうです。共通するのは二人ともフランスで高等教育を受けた後、アメリカのハーヴァード・スタンフォードという名門ＭＢＡで学んでいるということ。日経では彼らのことを「ハイブリッド族」と呼んでいましたが、ウォール街のメカニズムに精通し、一方では欧州独自の文化や制度に詳しい人材が欧州産業の担い手となっているようです。日本にこうした人材が豊富かどうかはわかりませんが、今後必要とされる人材像とは？という問いに、こうした動きは参考になると思います。

公取は来年中に、電力・ガス・鉄道の独禁法適用除外を廃止することを目指すようですね。これらの事業に簡単に他の事業者が参画できるかどうかは疑問ですが、その道を開いたということでは画期的なことでしょう。鉄道事業はともかく、今までも電力・ガスは同じエネルギー産業として顧客獲得競争をしてきたわけですが、今回同業者の中でも競争がおこなわれることになります。結果がどう出るかは想像もつきませんが、いずれにしても各社とも体質強化を迫られますね。

昨日のＮＨＫのスポーツニュースで二宮清純さんがゲストで出ていましたが、そこで話してくれた、野茂選手の取材の時のこぼれ話はおもしろかったです。事の顛末はこういうことです。
野茂選手がドジャース時代に、二宮さんが試合終了後取材にドジャースのロッカールームへ行ったそうです。そこで取材をしていると、チームメイトのラウル・モンデシーがバットをロッカーにぶつけて暴れまくっていたそうです。そこで二宮さんは野茂選手に「おい、ここは危ないから出ようぜ。」と目配せをしたそうなんですが、野茂選手は「いや、ここにいよう。」と目で合図をし、黙々とファンレターに目を通していたようです。後で二宮さんが野茂選手に聞いたところ「あそこで逃げ出したら、チームメイトからなめられてしまう。」と話してくれたということでした。
こういうことって海外だとすごく感じます。つまり日本人だから「なめられてるんじゃないか。」というような海外での扱いを肌で感じるんです。文句を言わない、というのは「満足している。」とイコールなんでしょう。そうとられても仕方がないでしょうね。
ここのところサッカーネタが多いのですが、今日もサッカー関係のことを書きたいと思います。浦和レッズの小野選手の去就が注目されていますが、海外への移籍の可能性が低くなってきたという報道を目にしました。
私の意見としては「小野よ、ヨーロッパへ行け。」です。それが浦和レッズのサポーターに対しての礼儀だと思うのです。セリエＡで活躍する中田選手との対比で見ると、小野選手に足りないものは精神的な部分だと思います。もっと前面に自分を出して、「俺が、俺が」でないと世界では通用しないでしょう。小野選手は本当に人がいいようですが、プロである以上、自分を持たなければなりません。２００２年のためにも、ヨーロッパのタフでしたたかな、そして奥深く、高い技術を肌で感じ取ってきてもらいたいです。今は小野選手が注目されていますが、すぐに小野選手を超える才能を持った選手が登場するかもしれません。（既に小野の方が中田より「技術的には」上という声もある。）その時では遅いのです。Ｊ１で１年レンタルでやるよりも、ヨーロッパで一皮むけた小野にレッズサポは帰ってきてほしいと考えているのではないでしょうか。
私と同年代のサッカー選手としてはスーパースターであったエスパルスの長谷川選手が今年で引退しますが、彼のコメントを書いてみます。彼は日産で活躍していましたが、何の母体も持たない清水エスパルスがＪリーグに参加することになったことを知り清水に帰ってきて、それからずっとエスパルス一筋にプレーしてきました。
「安藤（今回のチャンピオンシップで大活躍。２ndステージでエスパルスからジュビロへ移籍）が自分のために躊躇せず移籍していくのを見て、少しうらやましく思った。」「（解雇通知を）話し合いのないまま、いきなり渡されるとは思わなかった。選手としてではなくても、どういう形でもチームを手助けしたかったし、そういう話も昨年の更改の時にはあって、オレを必要としてくれていると思った。自分の無知さと認識の甘さに腹が立ち、情けなく思っている。社会の荒波にもまれて、多くの人に出会って、人間的にも成長したい。」
小野選手がプロのサッカー選手であるならば、躊躇している間はないはず。すぐにでも自分よりも高いレベルの中で成長しなければならないと思います。
Ｊリーグ年間王者を決定するチャンピオンシップが今日行われました。先週はジュビロスタジアムまで行って観戦できたのですが、今日は自分たちのリーグがあったので、残念ながら行き慣れた日本平には行けずじまいでした。私自身としては、ディフェンダーに詰められながら難しい角度のシュートを決めたかと思えば、パスをフリーでもらいながらも枠を外してしまったりチグハグでした。
ゲーム終了後、カーラジオを点けてみたら、まだ決着がつかず延長に入るところでした。その５分後くらいにちょうど日本平スタジアムに上っていく道のところを通過しましたが、「ああ、あそこでやってるんだなあ。」と思うと感慨深いものがありました。
結果はジュビロのＰＫ勝ちで、ジュビロが年間王者になりましたが、私はこの結果に納得しています。一部には、エスパルスの方が年間通算すると最も勝率がいいとしてジュビロの年間王者を認めない、と見る向きもありますが、そんなことを言っていったら今までの年間王者のことを認めないことになってしまうし（実際昨年はジュビロが年間勝率１位にも関わらず、チャンピオンシップでアントラーズに負けて、年間王者にはならなかった。また年間勝率も結果的にそうなったということで、当初から１シーズン制だったら、エスパルスが１位であったという保証はどこにもない。）、このレギュレーションはシーズン当初から決まっていたことで、Ｊ１の全チームにチャンスが与えられていたのですし。ジュビロは今シーズン非常に厳しいスケジュールの中で、アジアクラブチャンピオンシップ、アジアスーパーカップチャンピオンシップにも勝ち、アジアNo１になる一方で、チームの大黒柱であった名波を自クラブの利益のために抱え込むことをせず、気持ちよくセリエＡに送り出しています。そのジュビロにエスパルスは結果的には年間王者の座は逃したものの、互角に渡り合ったことで充分に讃えられると思います。
私は日本が今後サッカーで強国になっていくためには、技術面の向上以上にもっとタフでしたたかになる必要があると思います。今回のジュビロとエスパルスの差は、そうしたタフな国際ゲームを経験したかどうかということであったと感じます。Ｊリーグのハードスケジュールの中で、イランで１４万、サウジで５万（だったかな）のアウェイで石を投げられながらもタイトルを取ってきた、そのタフネスさとしたたかさをジュビロは日本に持って帰ってきたのではないでしょうか。日本代表が前回のＷ杯で経験したヨーロッパのそして南米のタフネスさ、クレバーさをもっと学ばなければなりません。でなければ、日本代表はもう一段成長することはできないでしょう。もはや彼らはアマではなくプロなんですから。
最後に、スポーツを観る時は思い切り楽しみ、結果が出たら勝者を讃えたいと思います。勝者にケチをつけている姿勢は、贔屓のチームのために結果的にはならない、と思います。
サッポロビールの株価が下がり続けています。確かにここ２年ほどの業績は非常に厳しく、かなりの損失を計上していますから、当然の流れではありますが。しかし、アサヒ・キリンの株価から比べるとあまりにその額が乖離しています。ヒット商品に恵まれないのが最大の理由だと思いますが、黒ラベルがそんなに落ち込んでいるんでしょうか。黒ラベルはスーパードライや一番絞りに較べてもかなりおいしいと思うんですけどね。ちなみに私はモルツが好きです。
タイトルはわからないのですが、ＮＨＫで深夜に女性が主人公のアメリカのドラマをやっていたのをネイティブの友人に話したところ、「あのドラマ、おもしろいね。」とのことでした。ただ同時に「あのドラマに出てくるアメリカ人の女の子達って悪く描写されているから、その部分はあんまり好きじゃない。とは言っても、あれが典型的なアメリカ人の女の子なんだけどね。いつだって『どっかにMr.Perfectがいないかしら。』と集まって話していながら、自分に関してはlazyな部分があって。自分はそうじゃないと思ってるから、いろいろ努力してるけど。」（これはあくまでも個人的な意見なのでその点ご理解くださいね）とも言っていました。日本のドラマでもいろいろな日本人が描写されているわけですが、彼・彼女らにはどんな風に映るんでしょうか。

千葉と言えばくじらが有名ですね。昔、子供の頃くじらを食べた覚えがあるのですが、最近はいろいろな問題があって、なかなか口にはいることはありません。千葉駅周辺の飲み屋さんではくじらを出してくれる店が多いんですけど、今回食べたのはたれ漬け（というような名前だったと思う。）でした。くじらをしょうゆだれのようなもので漬けたものらしいんですが、少し臭みはあるもののなかなかおいしかったです。この前は刺身を食べましたが、こちらもおいしいです。ちょっと馬刺みたいな感じで、珍味です。
最近、疲れがますます増しているせいか、今日は昼間ずっと眠ってしまいました。TIMEを読むどころか、新聞さえも読みませんでした。仕事上、今年は会計ビッグバンの影響で覚えなければならないことが多い上に、この不況で処理すべきことも多く、また更にはスタッフの人数も非常に限られていることもあって、なかなか英語にふれる時間もありません。
時間はつくるものだ、とよく言われますが、なかなかできるものではありません。もしできるとしたら、やること・やりたいことにおいてプライオリティを判断し、中にはやらない・やれないことを選別していくことしかないのかなと思う今日この頃です。
今日は静岡のサッカーファンにとって待ちに待った、Ｊリーグ始まって最初の同県チームのチャンピオンシップがありました。私も友人達とジュビロ磐田スタジアムへ行って来ましたが、ゲームの内容もすばらしいもので満足して帰ってきました。マドリッドやミラノのようにその国を代表するチームに両チームともなっていってほしいと思います。それにしても皆サッカーうまいですねー。（当たり前か）体の入れ方、パスをもらうアングル、ボールコントロール、視野の広さ・・・、これは現場で見るとよくわかります。自分だったら、というイメージで見ると、各選手の能力の高さを感じます。特にジュビロの奥、（藤田）トシヤ、エスパのノボリ（沢登）、（伊東）テルといったあたりは本当にうまいです。
さて結果の方はジュビロがＶゴール勝ちしましたが、まだまだわかりません。来週は自分のサッカーが、チャンピオンシップと同じ時間にいつものように清水であるのでゲームは見られませんが、必ずや好ゲームになると思います。がんばれエスパルス！ジュビロ！
これはネイティブの友人から聞いた話ですが、先月あるＡＬＴをしているネイティブが自殺をしたそうです。問題はその時の話なのですが、実はその前にも彼は手首を切って自殺を図り（未遂）病院にかつぎ込まれたことがあったんだそうです。その時に病院では手当をしてそのまま彼を家に帰したようなんですけど、私の友人は次のように言っていました。
「明らかに自殺を図っているんだから、何か原因があるはず。精神的なケアをしないで、外科的手当だけで家に帰らせたら、自殺の原因が取り払われていないのだからまた同じことが再発する可能性がある。それに少なくとも家族には知らせる必要があると思うのだけれど、それさえも患者まかせだったみたい。これと同じケースがアメリカであったら、１名の医師、２名の精神カウンセラーがＯＫをしなければ、家には帰さない。日本ではなぜ精神的なケアをしないのか。」
西武の松坂投手が7000万円の年棒になったようですね。何か昨年の活躍ぶり、そして日本のプロ野球に与えた影響を考えれば安いような気がしますが、そう言えば彼はまだ今年ルーキーだったんでよね。私はセ・パ両リーグとも好きなんですが、松坂クンには来年のパリーグを盛り上げて欲しいと思います。巨人からロッテに移籍した石井選手との対決は名勝負になるような気がします。来年はライオンズｖｓマリーンズに注目したいと思います。

この前の日曜日の話になりますが、競馬のジャパンカップで見事日本馬のスペシャルウイークが優勝してくれました。今年はエルコンドルパサーが凱旋門賞で２位になったり、日本の馬が世界でも活躍をした年であったと思います。でもＦ−１やサッカー、競馬を見ていてて思うんですけど、本場って日本じゃないんですよね。野球やバスケはアメリカだし。何でもアウェイでやらなければ自分の才能が世界で認められないなんてちょっと不利な感じがするんですけど。
