英字新聞を読む

英語に関してある程度の文法的な知識がある中級学習者にとって次のステップとなるのは語彙の増強だと思います。単語の意味はあくまで文脈の中で決まるわけですから単語集の丸暗記では応用が利かないばかりか、誤った解釈をしかねません。かといって多読すればそれだけの効果が得られると言う保証も時間もないのが実状です。そこでおすすめしたいのが英字新聞を利用する方法です。その理由は次の通りです。
１ TIMEやNEWSWEEKなどの雑誌では難しすぎる。
２ editorial（社説）を利用することによりある程度格調の高い英文を読むことが出来る。
３ 今日必要とされる最新の語彙に触れられる。
４ 多くは６００語程度の適当な長さである。
それでは実際の英文を見てみましょう。
Anti-terrorism pact
The united States and North Korea issued a joint declaration affirming their opposition to "terrorism in all its forms." It is hard to quarrel with a statement that denounces all types of terrorism, whether directed against states or individuals.
However, there is something about this statement that does not sit well with us-namely, the very fact that it was jointly issued by the United States, which includes North Korea on its list of states which sponsor terrorism, and North Korea, whose leader Kim Jong Il has condemed the United States for branding his country a terrorist state.
The United States believes that North Korea was behind various acts of terrorism including a bombing in Rangoon in 1983, and the downing of a Korean Air Jetliner in 1987, and has provided a haven to members of the Japanese Red Army who hijacked a Japan Airlines plane and went to North Korea. 英字新聞の難しい点の一つとしてheadline（見出し）があげられます。pactという単語から引っかかってしまうかもしれませんが、多くの場合本文の記事を読み進める内に類推することが出来ます。最初の段落ではdenounceが問題でしょうか。ただし反対を意味する接頭辞のdeとannounceという単語から類推は可能です。辞書を引くのであれば英英辞典よりもthesaurus（類義語辞典）をお薦めします。Random House Webster's College Thesaurusによれば"The council denounced the new law."という例文とcondemやcriticizeなどの類義語が与えられています。ここで他の語と関連づけて覚えるのが語彙力増強のポイントです。これで２段落目のconndemも解決しました。又この辺まで読めば、pactがtreatyやagreementの意味だという察しがつくことでしょう。３段落目ではhavenが難しいと思いますが、同じように調べると"The ship sought a haven in the storm."という例文が見られ、shelter, refuge, retreat, sanctuaryなどの類義語からイメージが沸くわけです。
私が勤務する攻玉社学園には帰国子弟を対象とする国際学級があり、このようなことを授業で実践しています。英字新聞を題材として類義語辞典を活用することで、よりいっそうの語彙力増強を図ることが可能になると考えるからです。また総合学習の時間に「英字新聞を読む」という講座を開き、生徒に時事英語に親しむ機会を設けています。
