In the larger context, I am happy to observe that the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Japan have grown from strength to strength in the past year. In 2004 Japan continued its assistance to the peace process in Sri Lanka as well as its development cooperation with the country. During his visit to Japan in September 2004 Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar called for the widening and deepening of bilateral relations between our two countries. His sentiments have been reciprocated by the Japanese Government.

It is noteworthy that the number of arrivals of tourists from Japan to Sri Lanka has doubled during past few years and Sri Lanka's exports to the Japanese market have shown steady improvement. We have also seen a gradual increase in the flow of Japanese investment to Sri Lanka. Indeed, these developments augur well for stronger relations between our two countries in the future.

May I in conclusion extend my good wishes for continued peace and prosperity of Japan.

　さらに大きな状況下で、スリランカと日本双方の関係がこれほどますます強くなってきていることを喜んで述べたいと思います。昨年日本には、我が国への発展への協力だけでなく、平和への援助も続けていただきました。昨年９月のラクシュマン外相の日本訪問の際、外相は両国の関係を深め、拡大することを懇願しました。その彼の意見が日本政府によって受け入れられてきたのです。

　スリランカを訪れる日本人観光客の数が過去数年間で倍増し、スリランカの日本市場への輸出が、安定した向上を示してきたことは注目すべきことです。私たちはまた、日本のスリランカへの出資の流れの中での漸進的な増加も見てまいりました。実にこれらの発展は、将来両国の関係がより強くなることの前兆を示しているのです。

　最後に私は、日本の恒久の平和と繁栄を心からお祈りします。

　より大きな情況で見ると、私はスリランカと日本双方の関係が過去よりますます強く発展してきたということを幸せに思います。２００４年日本は引き続き我が国との協同開発と同様に和平プロセスにも援助してくださいました。２００４年９月ラクシュマン・カディルガマール外相の訪日の際、両国の二国間関係を拡大深化することを求めました。彼の意見は日本政府にも肯定的に受け入れられました。

注目すべきは、日本からスリランカへ訪れる観光客がここ数年で２倍になり、スリランカから日本市場への輸出が確実に伸びを示していることです。私たちはまた、日本のスリランカへの投資の流入量が徐々に増加していることも見てとれます。本当にこのような発展は将来の両国のより強固な関係の良い兆しであります。

最後に、日本の恒久平和と繁栄を心よりお祈り申し上げます。
