The man in the picture is a teacher for physically challenged
children. He himself is physically
challenged. He became a teacher
after he found the joy of sports for himself in the Kobe Cosmos. His concern was what he could do for his
students to enjoy sports. His students’
worry was whether they could play well or not.
One day, he suggested that the students should play baseball in PE
class. @At first,
they were not eager to follow his suggestion. But when the students heard that they
could change the rules, they were sure that they could play baseball. According to their new rules, a batter
can use a racket as a bat. A
pitcher who cannot throw a ball all the way to the catcher can come
closer. ANow baseball
has become their favorite sport.
A new young member joined the Kobe Cosmos in 2001. He had lost his left leg in a motorcycle
accident. At first it seemed that
the accident deprived him of his future.
When he was in the hospital, however, he tried to see the bright side of
life. Just then, he happened to
learn about the Kobe Cosmos on the Internet. He joined the team soon after he left
the hospital.
Now his parents are glad to see him playing baseball. They say, “Before he played baseball, he
seemed to be always alone in his room with his video games. Thanks to baseball, he has found
pleasure in playing a team sport.”
Sports are activities physically challenged people can take part
in. They have an important role in
teaching fair play and teamwork.
More than anything, sports show everyone how to enjoy life.

[Email from Mihwa
to Kumiko]
Kon’nichiwa. Thanks for the photos. They are very nice.
I am pleased to hear that you are studying Korean. Usually it is hard to learn a foreign
language. But, studying Japanese
myself, I imagine that Korean is not so difficult for Japanese people to
learn. There are two reasons for
this. First, the word order of Korean
is similar to that of Japanese. For
example, verbs are put at the end of the sentences. Second, Hangul is very systematic. Hangul is the writing system created by
King Sejong in the 15th century. It is said to be the most systematic of
all written languages. Sometimes,
we also use kanji. So I am sure you
can learn Korean very quickly.
