お題は「A Defense of Abortion: A compromise View」という中絶についての論文について述べよ、というものです。

Topic#1

In an article, “A Defense of Abortion: A compromise View,” Judith Thomson discusses why she supports abortion. One of the basic and unique ideas of this article is that admits all babies have rights “from the moment of conception (197, 2)” and she then proposes killing is not always morally impermissible. In order to explain this idea, Thomson gives two examples, which are a violinist’s example and Henry Fonda example. These examples show us there are some cases people do not responsible for other people’s death.
First, there is one thing that we should not misunderstand about Thomson’s opinion. She does not say every mother has rights to operate abortion. There are only two cases she suggests having abortion. Those are; “a pregnancy due to rape (198, 38-39)” and “a case in which continuation of the pregnancy is likely to shorten the mother’s life (199, 11-12lines).” She just disagrees to the anti-abortion opinion that prohibits all kinds of abortions without any exceptions.
Under this circumstance, Thomson starts arguing about a violinist’s example (198). In this example, there is one innocent and unlucky man who is kidnapped to help one famous fatal violinist. Without any notations, the unlucky man is kidnapped and told that “last night the violinist’s circulatory system was plugged to yours, so that your kidneys can be used to extract poisons from his blood (198, 20-21).” In order to help the famous violinist, the man has to stay in a bed for nine months and bear boring time. This is obviously a metaphor of pregnancy due to rape. Thomson then says there are usually two opinions toward this argument. One is that everybody must have rights to live so that a mother has to bear the nine months, and the other arguments is that those babies “come into existence because of rape (198, 41)” have less rights to survive. However, Thomson judges both of them are wrong. According to her, the central problem is not a matter of more or less rights to survive.
