フランスとオーストリアの混合バンド。ELENDはAlexandre Hasnaoui とRenaud Tschirnerによって１９９３年に結成された。１９９４年に女性ヴォーカリストのEve-Gabrielle Siskind が加入することで３人編成のグループになった。このアルバムは１９９４年１１月にリリースされた。このアルバムは３部作の１作目になっていてミルトンの「失楽園」から影響を受けた歌詞を中心に「絶望」をコンセプトにしたものとなっている。クラシック音楽の教育を受けた３人が作り出すシンフォニーは暗黒世界の音楽として壮絶な完成度を誇っている。大天使ルシファーの地獄への転落を歌い上げる中で、叫ぶ声がたくさん出てくるが、これはルシファーの声をイメージしたもののようだ。歌詞は基本的に英語なのだが、ラテン語も混じっている。ラテン語はさすがに対訳が出ていないのでなんて書いてあるのか非常に気になる。この雰囲気は妖しく、美しく、心を落ち着けて静かに聴きいっていたい。

３部作の２作目で「反乱」と「暴力」をメインテーマにおいたアルバム。歌詞は前作の続きで、地獄の宮殿を建設をしたあと堕天使ルシファーが夢想する世界について書かれている。アルバムタイトルの「LES TENEBRES DU DEHORS」はキリスト教の世界で、地獄の深淵の領域を意味する。前作の売り上げが良かったからか、この作品での予算が前作の５倍になったそうで、そのため、より複雑なオーケストラを組むことが出来たそうだ。ハーモニックな曲構成にすることで、よりクラシック的なアプローチが取られた。ブックレットの中の絵はギュスターブ・ドレの「失楽園」について描かれた絵が使用されている。カヴァーアートはヴィクトル・ユーゴーとレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの作品を使用していて青色で統一されている。この青色はこのアルバムのコンセプトであるルシファーの夢の世界を表わしているそうだ。美しい女性ソプラノのハーモニーが終わると「But here there is no light」の呟きから妖しいオルガンみたいな音とともに「Ethereal Journeys」が始まる。１４分もあるこの曲は聞きごたえ満点。作品中唯一のフランス語歌詞の「Antienne」は女性ヴォーカルが囁くように語る。

１９９７年６月にリリースされた。当初２作目のリミックスだけを収録するミニアルバムの予定だったが、３曲の新曲を含めることでフルレンスアルバムとなった。しかし、これは３部作の中には入らない。この作品から１９９７年の初めに加入したSebastien Rolandがキーボードプレイヤー、サウンドデザイナーやエンジニアとして参加している。男性ヴォーカルを取り除いた美しい女性ソプラノだけの曲に編集されている。アルバムジャケットはレンブラントの「ロフトのテーブルで座って読書する男」というイギリス・ナショナル・ギャラリーにある絵画である。

「死」をメインコンセプトとしたアルバムで３部作の最後を飾る傑作。イギリスの合唱団「the Joyful Company of Singers」から３０人のヴォーカリストを参加させたというのもすごいが、その効果は一目瞭然で、すばらしい出来栄えになっている。合唱団は２つのパートに別れており、ソプラノで歌い上げるラテン語とヘブライ語の歌詞が天使のパート、アルトとバスで歌われる英語の歌詞が地獄のパートを演じている。また曲の構成も「LECONS DE TENEBRES」の元曲のように３教義に分けられている。まるで映画を見ているような感覚に陥ってしまう。そう、目の前にその映像が鮮明に浮かび上がるかのようなサウンドトラックのようにリアルだ。賛美歌のように美しい女性コーラスが最高にすばらしい。そしてヴォーカルはささやくように、まるで大聖堂の内で懺悔を告白しているような沈鬱なもの悲しい声。
