タイトルからして想像が付く人も多いだろう。ビートルズの「パスト・マスターズ」にならって作られた、ジョージ・ハリスンのオリジナルアルバム未収録曲を集めたアルバムである。 |
Side-１
|
１．上海サプライズ（Harrison） ジョージがプロデュースしていた英国の映画製作会社、ハンドメイドフィルムズ社86年制作の同名映画のテーマソング。ジョージとデュエットで歌う相手としては、映画の主演をつとめるマドンナでいく案もあったそうだが、最終的には気心の知れた、かつて「ゴーン・トロッポ」でバックコーラスをつとめたこともあるリバプール出身のシンガー、ビッキー・ブラウンが選ばれている。 いかにも中国、という銅鑼の音から始まり、東洋風な味付けがされているが、それのロックとの融合がすばらしい。この映画のサウンドトラックは発売されておらず、この曲は映画でしか聴くことが出来なかったが、それには発売しないのが惜しい曲である。映画で聴けるものはここに収録されているものとはミックスが異なり、ややテンポが遅く、曲の前半がオープニングに、後半がエンディングにつかわれていた。 ＜リリース・データ＞ イギリスのみで７インチ・シングルレコードのプロモに収録された。 ２．ジグ・ザグ（Harrison/Lynne） 映画「上海サプライズ」に使われた曲から。ジャズ風のインストロメンタル曲で、アレンジはJohn DoPrezによるもの。 劇中で、ジョージは“Zig Zag Club”というジャズクラブでクラブバンド“The Zig-Zaggars”(実体はガスライト・オーケストラ)のメンバーとして出演し、この曲を演奏している。白いスーツにオールバックというジョージの姿がなんだかおかしい。 この曲の共作者であり、後のパートナーとなるジェフ・リンとのコンビはこの曲から始まっている。ここに収録されたバージョンは映画で使われたものではなく、後になってオーバーダビングを加えたもので、新たに“Zig, Zag”というコーラスが付け加えられている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ シングル「FAB」(米88年1月20日、英1月25日)のB面に収録された。 ３．ホッテスト・ゴング・イン・タウン（Harrison） 映画「上海サプライズ」に使われた曲から。ジョージの作風とは一風変わった歌詞と曲風のスイングジャズで、これも｢ジグ・ザグ｣同様にJohn DoPrezによりアレンジがなされている。１コーラス毎に違ったアレンジがなされており、実に完成度が高い。 この曲も劇中でジョージ自らクラブ歌手として出演して歌っており、ギターを持たずに歌う珍しいジョージの姿が見られる。 また、この映画では、後にアルバム「クラウド・ナイン」に収録された「サムプレイス・エルス」や「ブレス・アウェイ・フロム・ヘブン」も挿入曲として使われている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 2,500部限定の豪華本“Songs By George Harrison２”(92年)付属のCD（もしくは７インチ・シングルレコード）に収録された。 ４．ミス・オーデル（Harrison） アルバム「リヴィング・イン・ザ・マテリアル・ワールド」セッション中に録音された曲であるが、厳格な雰囲気のアルバムにはそぐわないとの理由から、シングルB面のみに収録された。 当時アップルに勤めていたクリス・オーデルを主人公に、バングラ・ディシュ救援コンサートの顛末などについてコミカルにかかれた曲で、ジョージは笑いながら歌っている。笑ってしまっている部分を録音し直したコンプリート・テイクも存在するが、ジョージは最終的にこの笑っているテイクを正式に採用している。ジョージが曲の最後につぶやいているのは、リバプール時代のポール・マッカートニーの電話番号らしい。 ＜リリース・データ＞ シングル「ギヴ・ミー・ラヴ」（米73年5月7日、英5月25日）のＢ面に収録された。 ５．バングラ・デシ（Harrison） ライヴ・エイドの先駆けとなった「バングラ・ディシュ救済コンサート」のテーマ曲。曲の最初に出てくる“He”とは、バングラディシュの惨状をジョージに知らせて救援コンサートを要請したラヴィ・シャンカールのことである。 コンサートの最後に｢サムシング｣が終わった後、いったん舞台の袖に引っ込んだジョージは、アンコールをうけてこの曲を歌っている。もちろんそれは一つの演出であり、この曲を歌わなかったら何のための曲かわからない。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 71年8月1日のコンサートを間近に控えた前月の7月に録音され、ほとんど直前（米7月28日、英7月30日）にシングルＡ面として発売され、全米23位、全英12位を記録している。 ベスト・アルバム「ザ・ベスト・オブ・ジョージ・ハリスン」にも収録されている。 ６．ディープ・ブルー（Harrison） 当時脳腫瘍で入院していた母親ルイーズと、その看病疲れでこれまた入院してしまった父親ハロルドの狭間にあってかかれた曲で、共同プロデュースに、フィル・スペクターがクレジットされているが、いわゆるスペクター・サウンドではなく、歌詞同様に寂しげで小品的な曲である。左右の生ギターとドラムス、そして思い出したように入るボトルネックのギターだけで構成されている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ アルバム「オール・シングス・マスト・パス」セッション中に録音された曲だが、同アルバムには収録されずに、翌年にシングル「バングラ・デシ」のＢ面に収録された。 ７．アイ・ドント・ケア・エニーモア（Harrison） 「マイ・スウィート・ロード」盗作問題についてかかれた曲で、まだまだデモ的な様相が強く、おそらくジョージの一人だけの録音だと思われる。間違いなくジョージの発表した曲の中で最も完成度が低い。 ジョージは曲の最初に、「われわれはB面曲に取り掛かったが、この曲を完成させる十分な時間が無かった。」と、冗談だか本気だかわからないような発言をしているが、この当時、ジョージはダーク・ホースレーベル設立による多忙さなどから、北米ツアーに向けたアルバム「ダーク・ホース」が、ツアーに間に合わず、この曲のアレンジもいいかげんになっている。また、この時痛めていた声帯も最高潮であり、この曲でのジョージのボーカルも実に痛々しい。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 米ではシングル「ダーク・ホース」（米74年11月18日）のＢ面に、日、英ではシングル「ディン・ドン」（英12月6日）のＢ面にそれぞれ収録された。 ８．ライド・ラージブン（English/Harrison） 92年に、イギリスの子供番組「バンバリー・テイルズ」のためにかかれた曲で、日本では発表されていないせいもあって知名度は恐ろしく低い。ジョージはこの曲を最後に10年近くソロ活動を休止することになる。 歌詞は物語の作者のデイビッド・イングリッシュによるもの。ジョージとラヴィ・シャンカールがシタールを演奏し、ジョージの一人息子ダニーがコーラスをとる。 ジョージの曲としては珍しく"Ride Rajbun, Ride Rujbun"のフレーズがいつまでも耳に残る曲で、本格的なインド音楽としては、実はビートルズの"The Inner Light"以来およそ25年ぶりの曲ということになるのは意外でもある。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 日本未発売のオムニバスアルバム“The Bunbury Tails”に収録された。 ９．青春の想い（Dylan） 85年の映画『ポーキーズ・最後の反撃』の挿入曲で、これはそこからシングルカットされたリミックス・バージョンである。映画のサウンド・トラックを担当したデイブ・エドモンズの依頼より演奏されたこのボブ・ディランによる曲は、「オールシングス・マスト・パス」セッションの時に既にデモ録音されていた曲で、ジョージはこの発売以前にも数回レコーディングにまでおよんでいたが、正式に発表されていなかった。 同時に、この映画のテーマ曲の候補として同じくボブ・ディランの“Abandoned Love”も録音されているが、未発表ということもあってか「青春の想い」の方が採用された。 ＜リリース・データ＞ ダーク・ホース／ワーナーからではなく、コロンビア・レコードからシングルA面曲として発表（米85年4月23日）された。チャート・インはしていない。 10．モー（Harrison） ワーナー・ブラザーズの名物社長だったモー・オースティンの５０歳の誕生日のためにジョージが書いた曲で、もともとは７９年のアルバム「慈愛の響き」に収録する予定だったもの。ギターのリフが、なんとなく同アルバム収録の「ファースター」に似ている。 後になって、ベストアルバム「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」に収録する予定もあったそうだが、どちらもモー・オースティン本人の希望により外されている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 結局９４年にモーのワーナー退職を記念して作られた６枚組プロモCD「Pro−Mo」に収録された。

11．世界を救え（Harrison） ここからはボーナストラックで、既発曲の別バージョンとなる。この｢世界を救え｣の別バージョンは、自然保護団体「グリンピース」制作のオムニバスアルバム“Greenpeace-The Album”収録のもので、ヴォーカルとスライドギターが録音し直され、グリンピースに関するくだりの歌詞が多少いじられている。 12．ザッツ・ザ・ウェイ・イット・ゴーズ（Harrison） シングル「ＦＡＢ unextended version」（米88年1月25日）のＢ面に収録された、アルバム「ゴーン・トロッポ」収録曲のリミックスバージョンだが、原曲とほとんど変わりなく、一部ドラムがミュートされたり、カウントインが２拍すくないなどの細かい違いだけで、単なるミキシング違いといった感じである。 13．青春の想い（Dylan） 85年の映画『ポーキーズ・最後の反撃』のサウンドトラック収録曲。９曲目に収録したリミックスバージョンよりもややラフなミックスだが、同じテイクで、聞いた感じはほとんど変わらない。映画の中では本当に申し訳程度にしか使われていなかったこの曲だが、出来はなかなかのものでシングルカットされたのもうなずける。 14．ＦＡＢ（Harrison/Rynne） アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」収録のものと同じテイクだが、曲の終わりに逆回転のエンディングが加えられている涙ものの「リバース・エンド」バージョンで、ビートルズの「サージェント・ペパーズ…」の頃のサウンドを、より思い起こさせるつくりとなっている。 15．セット・オン・ユー（Clark） これもアルバム「クラウド・ナイン」収録のものと同じテイクだが、「エクステンデッド・バージョン」で、曲を編集して長くしてあり、ギターの間奏を新たに付け加えられてある。

１．サット・シンギング（Harrison） 80年に発売が予定されていたアルバム「想いは果てなく−母なるイングランド−」に収録を予定していたが、商業的でないとの理由からワーナーから曲の差し替えを要求され、収録もれとなった曲のひとつ。アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」制作とほぼ同時期にジェフ・リンとの共同作業によるリミックスが行われている。リミックス・バージョンといっても当初のものとほとんど相違はない。 歌詞の中に“Sri Krishna”というフレーズが久しぶりに使われているが、内容はそれほど宗教的ではない。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 2,500部限定の豪華本“Songs By George Harrison”(88年)付属のCD（もしくは７インチ・シングルレコード）に収録された。 ２．レイ・ヒズ・ヘッド（Harrison） 80年に発売が予定されていたアルバム「想いは果てなく−母なるイングランド−」に収録を予定していたが、商業的でないとの理由からワーナーから曲の差し替えを要求され、収録もれとなった曲のひとつ。アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」制作とほぼ同時期にジェフ・リンとの共同作業によるリミックスが行われている。 当初予定されていたものより落ち着いたミックスが施されており、ジョージの曲の中でも特に優しさにあふれる仕上りになっている。この曲は後になってシングル「セット・オン・ユー」のB面に収録されたが、シングルB面曲に埋もれさせておくには実にもったいない名曲であり、個人的にも最も好きなジョージの曲である。 ＜リリース・データ＞ シングル「セット・オン・ユー」（米87年10月16日、英10月5日）のB面に収録された 2,500部限定の豪華本“Songs By George Harrison”(88年)付属のCD（もしくは７インチ・シングルレコード）にも収録された。 ３．フライング・アワー（Harrison/Ralph） 80年に発売が予定されていたアルバム「想いは果てなく−母なるイングランド−」に収録を予定していたが、商業的でないとの理由からワーナーから曲の差し替えを要求され、収録もれとなった曲のひとつ。アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」制作とほぼ同時期にジェフ・リンとの共同作業によるリミックスが行われている。 リミックスバージョンと称されているが、この曲に限ってはアルバムに予定していたものとは異なるテイクで、ややテンポが遅い。 スティーブ・ウィンウッドのムーグ・シンセサイザーが印象的なこの曲は、商業的でないとして外されたにしては、アップテンポでポップな佳曲である。外された曲に共通していえることは、前作「慈愛の響き」の延長線上にあるような曲だということだけである。 「慈愛の響き」が売れなかったことは決して収録曲が悪いせいではない。名曲「愛はすべての人に」がチャートインしなかったことからもそれがわかるはずなのだが。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 2,500部限定の豪華本“Songs By George Harrison”(88年)付属のCD（もしくは７インチ・シングルレコード）に収録された。 ４．ティアーズ・オブ・ザ・ワールド（Harrison） 80年に発売が予定されていたアルバム「想いは果てなく−母なるイングランド−」に収録を予定していたが、商業的でないとの理由からワーナーから曲の差し替えを要求され、収録もれとなった曲のひとつ。アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」制作とほぼ同時期にジェフ・リンとの共同作業によるリミックスが行われている。 なぜか“Songs By George Harrison”にも収録されず(おそらく「セット・オン・ユー」のB面にすでに収録されていた「レイ・ヒズ・ヘッド」と取り違えたものと思われる)、そのことを指摘されたジョージはインタビューで“よくわからない”とはぐらかしている。 ちなみに、これら４曲と差し替えられた曲は「ブラッド・フロム・ア・クローン」「過ぎ去りし日々」「ティアードロップス」「ザット・ホウィッチ・アイ・ハヴ・ロスト」の４曲である。 ＜リリース・データ＞ 2,500部限定の豪華本“Songs By George Harrison２”(92年)付属のCD（もしくは７インチ・シングルレコード）に収録された。 ５．ホース・トゥ・ザ・ウォーター（George And Dhani Harrison） ジョージとジョージの息子ダニーの共作で、２００１年１０月２日の録音のおそらくジョージの最期の録音となった作品。 ボーカルとギター以外はジュールズ・ホランド率いるバンドの演奏で、珍しくジョージ自身のプロデュースクレジットがないが、曲調としてはクラウド・ナイン以降のジョージそのままになっている。 "Oh,No."を繰り返す嘆きの歌詞の中でも、闘病中の身とは思えない力強いボーカルとリズムの曲。ジョージは間奏でダニーと入れ替わりにリード・ギターを取っていようで、晩年になって冴え渡っていたスライド・ギターの妙技をここでも聴くことが出来る。 ＜リリース・データ＞ オムニバスアルバム、「ジュールズと素晴らしき仲間たち」(２年２月)にのみ収録された。 ６．コッカマミー・ビジネス（Harrison） ベストアルバム「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」に用意された新曲で、歌詞の構成がアルバム｢クラウド・ナイン｣に収録されている「デヴィルズ・レイディオ」に良く似いる曲で、音楽業界の愚痴に環境問題を絡めている。 余談になるが、「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」のアルバム・ジャケットには、ジョージ直筆の「コッカマミー・ビジネス」「ザッツ・ザ・ウェイ・イット・ゴーズ」「人生の夜明け」（２個所）「ヒア・カムザ・ムーン」「愛はすべての人に」の歌詞の一部がデザインされている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ ベストアルバム、「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」(８９年１０月)にのみ収録された。 ７．プアー・リトル・ガール（Harrison） ベストアルバム「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」の１曲目に入れられている新曲で、アルバム「クラウド・ナイン」と同じような渋い立ち上がりを見せている。 ＜リリース・データ＞ イギリスのみで「チアー・ダウン」との両A扱いでシングルカット（英89年11月27日）された。 ベストアルバム、「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」(８９年１０月)にも収録されている。 ８．チアー・ダウン（Harrison/Petty） 映画「リーサル・ウエポン２」のテーマ曲として作られたが、映画の公開が予定より遅れて、先にジョージの新曲として「ザッツ・ホワット・イット・テイクス」とのカップリングで、でシングルA面曲として発売された。歌詞をトム・ペティと共作している。 もともとはエリック・クラプトンに贈られるはずだった曲で、それが縁でエリック・クラプトンがサウンド・トラックを担当するこの映画に採用された。映画の中では、エンディングの一番いいところでこの力強いスライドギターを聴くことが出来る。 ＜リリース・データ＞ シングル両A面曲として発売（米８９年８月２４日、英89年11月27日）された。 ベストアルバム、「ダーク・ホース１９７６〜１９８９」(８９年１０月)にも収録されている。

９．イン・ザ・ファースト・プレイス（Manley/Ashton） ここからは再びボーナス・トラックとなる。ビートルズ時代の68年にジョージが音楽を担当した映画「ワンダーウォール」からのアウトテイクで、98年にディレクターズカット版が公開された時に初めて挿入歌として日の目を見て、リモ・フォー名義でシングルカットされた（日本未発売）。 ワンダーウォールのセッションの中心にいたリモ・フォーによるサイケ色の強いサウンドで、ジョージはボーカルをコリン・マンリー（ポールの同級生だったらしい）とユニゾンでとっている。 10．ノーバディズ・チャイルド（Coben/Foree） 以降はトラベリング・ウィルベリーズのアルバム未収録曲、もしくは別バージョンとなる。９０年のチャリティー・アルバム「ルーマニアン・エンジェル・アピール」収録曲で、そこからシングル・カットされた。元はカントリースタイルのスタンダードナンバーで、ジョージはデビュー前のトニー・シェルダンのセッション中でもこの曲を演奏している（ボーカルはトニー・シェルダン）。 11．ランナウェイ（Shannon） 故ロイ・オービソンの後釜として噂されたデル・シャノンのヒット曲のカバーで、ここでボーカルをとっているのはジェフ・リン。シングル「シーズ・マイ・ベイビー」の１２インチ・シングルB面に収録された。 12．ニュー・ブルー・ムーン（Wilburys） ウィルベリーズの『Vol.3』収録曲で、このバージョンはボーカルのないインステトゥルメンタルになっている。シングル「シーズ・マイ・ベイビー」のB面に収録された。 13．ハンドル・ウィズ・ケア（Wilburys） ウィルベリーズの『Vol.1』収録曲と同じテイクだが、曲を長く編集したエクステンデッド・バージョンになっている。 14．エンド・オブ・ザ・ライン（Wilburys） これも「ハンドル・ウィズ・ケア」と同じく、曲を長く編集したエクステンデッド・バージョンになっている。
