| CENTRO (Centrosema pubescenes) |
The trailing legume Centro is one of the most widely distributed of all the tropical legumes. In the country common Centro was first introduced to Australia from Java. This is well adopted on a wide range of soil types and poor drainage situations and has formed stable and productive under grazing condition with a range of grass species. One way of improving economically, our native grassland pasture especially in non-arable areas is by introducing Centro seeds into the native pastures. In axially racemes to 7cms. Long of 2 to 3 pale blue mauve flowers with broad rounded standard about 3 cm. Long. This is fast growing perennial. It is hardy,
stands up to grazing well and seeds freely.
Although not very palatable to stock, it
forms a useful mixture with several species
of pasture grasses and is particularly productive
during the drier part of the year. Sown at
a rate of 10 to 15 kg per ha. |
