INFECTIOUS BUTDSL DISEASE
(IBD)

Causative Agent: Birnaviridae

Transmission: Contaminated premises or formites.

Incubation Period: 3 to 4 days.

Morbidity: Low but can reach 80%.

Mortality:
1. Up to 20% in chickens 3 weeks of age or older.
2. Vary from very low usually from 1 to 8%.

Age Group affected: 3 to 6 weeks old but may occur up to 18 weeks of age as long as birds have functional bursa.

Signs:
Clinical: 3 to 8 weeksold
1. Depression, incoordination, whitish diarrhea and vent picking.
2. Huddling together, reduced feed and water intake.

Sub-clinical:
Under 3 weeks of age.
Will not show any symptoms.

Gross Lesions:
1. Hemorrhages of the pectoral, thigh & leg muscles and wings.
2. Hemorrhages at the injection of proventriculus and gizzard.
3. Enlarged edematous bursa which may contain hemorrhages but reduces in size about the 5th day.
4. Swollen kidney.

Diagnosis:
1. Based on gross and microscopic lesions.
2. Agar Gel precipitation Test (AGPT).
3. ELISA Test.
4. Virus Neutralization test.

Differential Diagnosis:
1. Coccidiosis.
2. Hemorrhagic Syndrome.
3. Adenoviral Syndrome.

Prevention:
1. Vaccination
2. Good management practices.

Control: Strict sanitation using virucidal preparation to reduce viral challenge.

Recommended Supportive Medication:
1. Increase electrolyte preparations particularly sodium chloride levels.
2. Vitamin C at 200 mg/kg of feed in broiler diet.
3. Vitamin B complex.
