Ruptured Tendon syndrome


Causative Agent: Reoviridae.

Transmission:
1. Vertical.
2. Direct contact between birds.
3. Indirect contract.

Incubation Period: 4 to 13 days.

Morbidity: 100% 'Broilers).

Mortality: Less than 1% (Broilers). 10 to 20% (Layers).

Age Group affected: 6 to 7 weeks old birds but older birds could be affected.

Signs:
1. Lameness in broilers.
2. Anorexia.
3. Decrease in egg production in layers with increased mortality.

Gross Lesions:
1. Tendon sheaths - presence of inflammation.
2. Digital flexor and Metatarsal extensor tendon - presence of swelling.
3. Footpad - swollen with straw-coloured blood-inted exudate.

Diagnosis:
1. Clinical signs.
2. Gross and microscopic pathology.
3. Fluorescent Antibody Test.
4. Virus isolation.
5. Virus Neutralization.
&. Agar gel immunodiffusion or Precipitation Test.

Differential Diagnosis:
1. Malabsorption Syndrome.
2. Staphylococcosis.
3. Infectious Synocitis.

Prevention: Vaccination with attenuated vaccine.

Control: All-in, all-out procedure in broilers.
Treatment: None.

Recommended Supportive Medication: None.

Inflammation and swelling of the tendon sheaths and surrounding tissues.
