Description:
Director, International Programs
The International Ecotourism Society Washington, DC

The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) is hiring a new director for its international program work to be based in its Washington, DC headquarters.

Founded in 1990, TIES is the largest and oldest ecotourism organization in the world. It currently has some 1,200 members in more than 100 countries.

The organization's membership includes academics, consultants, conservation professionals and organizations, governments, architects, tour operators, lodge owners and managers, general development experts, and ecotourists.

As a non-governmental organization, TIES is unique in its efforts to provide guidelines and standards, training, technical assistance, research and publications to foster sound ecotourism development.

The work of the Director of International Programs will largely be centered around a partnership project with several other organizations focused on sustainable and ecotourism certification programs. This partnership project is being conducted with the Rainforest Alliance, Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development, and United Nations Development Program and in close collaboration with the World Tourism Organization. Its objective is to help create globally accepted criteria for sustainable and ecotourism certification projects and an international accreditation body or stewardship council (similar to those for wood and marine products).

The position involves multifaceted work with non-governmental organizations, the United Nations, the private sector, and local and indigenous communities. It involves creating training materials, making public presentations, media interviews, engaging in consultations, and helping to build consensus and capacity towards the implementation of a global framework for certification programs and an international accreditation body.

This position includes travel and consultation with stakeholders from around the world and participation in a variety of international forums, workshops and conferences. It also requires fundraising and development work for TIES, particularly with foundations and international donor agencies.

Work responsibilities include:
. Assisting with the conceptualization, creation, and production of print and electronic materials for certification and accreditation training/public awareness workshops;
. Presenting this information, facilitating sessions, administering questionnaires and interviews, and preparing reports on these sessions held at designated global workshops and meetings;
. Providing content and reports for the certification project web site;
. Working with the Executive Director on developing and undertaking projects for multilateral institutions including UNEP,UNDP, UNESCO, and the United Nations Foundation;
. Identifying new project, training, and funding opportunities for the Society;
. Writing proposals and raising funds from foundations, multilateral and bilateral organizations; . Coordinating production of TIES' monthly electronic newsletter;
. Coordinating the schedule and production of TIES' quarterly membership print newsletter;
. Overseeing TIES liaison with other ecotourism societies and associations around the world;
. Providing tourism and sustainable development information and research support;
. Serving as a spokesperson for the organization. The International Director will work closely with the rest of the TIES staff, especially the Executive Director, as well as TIES' other partners in the certification/accreditation project. Ability to work collaboratively is essential.

The position is tied to funding which currently runs for two years.

In addition, candidates must have good writing and speaking skills, as well as overseas travel and work experience. Strong computer skills are required.
