I. The first voyage was billed as a “Fantastic voyage”
1. The ship was a picture of luxury with the finest accommodations ever.
2. Some of the passengers were the jet set of the day. Among them were the wealthiest men in the world.
3. Some of these were like those Psalmist spoke of in Psalm 49:6.
They had no idea this fantastic voyage would be their last voyage.
II. The voyage was based on false security.
1. Titanic was billed as the unsinkable ship. The size, the weight of it, the anchors and the thickness of the hull.
2. Who would ever dream it could sink?
3. Why would such a ship need lifeboats? One needs only to trust the ship.
Reminds one of what the Bible says in Proverbs 16:25
III. The voyage proved that fact defeats theory.
1. Newspaper Cartoon in 1912 showed the Titanic striking the iceberg.
On the ship was written, “Theory.” On the iceberg,”Fact.”
2. A spiritual likeness can be drawn here. The theories of men vs. the facts of the Bible in Numbers 32:23b, Ephesians 2:9 and Rev.20:15.
IV. The voyage showed the folly of unbelief.
1. The Titanic struck the iceberg at 11:40 PM on April 14th,1912.
2. The passengers kept on partying, laughing and having a good time.
3. They were not worried. They had complete trust in the ship.
4. Their belief and trust was in something “Man made.” So many today trust in a theory, a philosophy, ”heart-felt belief” and even religion.
5. Paraphrase of Text:” Some trust in chariots, horses, theory, philosophy, religion and even an sinkable ship, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”
V. The voyage showed how foolish it is to be unprepared.
1. There were only 16 lifeboats and 4 life rafts. Enough for only 1200.
2. The lifeboats had no maps, no provisions, no sails, no crew assigned to them and no compasses. ( No directions!)
3. Reminds one of man’s religion without Christ with beautiful buildings, beautiful temples, beautiful music, wonderful traditions and eloquent speakers, but it has no directions on how to find God and how to have a relationship with Him.
