私は、マザーグースは子どもための子守唄で、なんだか大人が読む本ではないと思っていた。
でも、違っていた。この本は、時々心地よく、時々こわくなる。
とても、恐くなる時がある。私は、ぞっとしたために書き写さなかった文章がたくさんある。
「だれがこまどりを殺したの？」とか　「パイの中でやかれた人」とか、
３人のむすこはどうやってしんでいったか、とか・・ぞっとするような話もでてくる。
こどもの目は、時に残酷で、時に不気味で　時に滑稽で、もしかすると、この本は、
本当はグリム童話やハーメルンのような不気味な恐い本なのかもしれないと思ったりもした。
解説者はこう書いていた。
「こどもたちの想像の世界で起こることはとても残酷で、そして乾いている。
大人たちが、タブーとしていることも子どもたちは、あっけらかんに唄にします。
この本にある、残酷なシーンもじめついた印象が残らないのも、
こどもたちが変わった姿やかわった出来事に偏見をもたず、
すべてを遊びにしているからでしょう。
こどもたちの見開かれた目はどんなこともみのがさない、
見ている相手の目の中に自分の姿を見つけて、どんどん見ることの不思議さが広がって行く。
ガラスのコップを通して外の世界を見ると、とてもおかしなふうに見えます。
色ガラスのかけらを目にあてて、へんてこりんな世界を見るのがすきな子ども達は
それをこんなふうにうたいます。

「ねじれた男がおりました
　ねじれた道をやってきて
　ねじれた垣根の曲がり角
　ねじれたお金をひろいます
　ねじれたねずみをつかまえて
　ねじれた子猫を飼いました

マザーグースは、時計が時を告げるのではなく、
自分の時間をもつことのできる人達すべてのためにある。
時のすきまを埋めて行くこどもたちの遊び」と書いている。
