These sentences were written by my students.
1. Osechi ( Japanese dish on New Year Day )
Osechi is a yearly event which came from China.
The special foods eaten from January 1 through January 7
is called Osechi-ryori.
Osechi-ryori,because it is special cuisine to celebrate
New Year's Day. It is consist of the special products of
each district and foods which are considered to be good
luck.
The Osechi-ryori is in lacquer boxes called "jubako".
We eat Osechi-ryori, with family,friends and relatives
over the New Year's holiday while wishing for health.

2. Chirashizushi (ちらしずし)
This picture is Chirashizushi. It is a kind of "Takikomi-gohan"
and "Maze-gohan". "Takikomi-gohan" is a rice seasoned with soy sauce
and boiled with meat or seafood,and other savory vegetables.
"Maze-gohan" is a boiled rice mixed with meat and other ingredients.It was made as a kind of fermented food in Nara period (about600 AD) And It is a necessary food in the Doll's Festival.
Doll's
festival is the day of a celebration for girls. It has a very vivid
color. And that is suitable for celebration.

3. Festivals in Japan
There are many festivals in Japan.
We Japanese do a festival hoping people's happiness.
About sixty-three thousand festivals of many kinds are held in Japan.
Japan is the No1 country,in terms of number,in the world. We are proud of
its tradition.
On the day of the fair there come out many street stands.

4. Doll Kuidaore
Kuidaore means to eat as much as one wants to eat and to get fainted.
The word "kuidaore" is famous in Osaka.
Doll Kuidaore can be seen in the street called "Dotonbori".
Doll Kuidaore is the symbol of Osaka 's food culture.
When you come to Japan,please visit here and find this doll
including Kyoto and Nara.

5. Hinamatsuri ( A festival for girls )
Hinamatsuri was a festival for rich girls to have a protective charm and to pray for their health.
And soon it became popular among ordinary people. It is held in March 3. In the festival we
use many dolls. They are protective gods. They protect female babies from bad things.

6. Tangonosekku( A festival for boys )
Tangonosekku is a festival for boys to pray for their health and their success in life.
It is held in May 5. In the festival we need the tall pole and koinobori( a carp streamer).
Long ago in Japan it was believed that gods descented to the ground from the heaven to
protect children ,using the tall pole. And soon people attached striking clothes on the pole,
hoping that gods would find their own houses. When you come to Japan in mid-April or in
May , you can see many carp streamers swimming in the sky.
( Ishii, Koreeda, Yamamoto ,Tanaka ) They are girls.
7. Mt. Fuji ( Fuji-san )
Mt.Fuji which is the highest mountain in Japan is 3776 meters high. An old proverb says,"
Ichi fuji nitaka san nasubi ". It means that when you have the first dream in January 2,
if you have a dream of Mt. Fuji, you will be the luckiest this year, and if you have a dream of
hawk, you will be second the luckiest, and if you have a dream of eggplant, you will be third
the luckiest this year. Mt. Fuji's name comes from the the word " fuji "(不死). It means the
word "immortal". So Mt. Fuji is a symbol of immortality. Do you know the man Hokusai Katsushika ?
He is a Ukiyoe painter. He kept on painting pictures(Ukiyoe), only of Mt.Fuji.

8. Hagoita( a battle dore)
A battle dore is a kind of game that is played on the New Year's Day.
Two people play battle dore and shuttlecock alternately.
On the surface of it, you can see the beautiful pictures of girls and lions.

9. Mochi ( rice cake )
On the new year's day, Japanese eat 'Mochi'. Mochi is a rice cake.
'Mochi Tsuki' is Japanese traditional event. 'Tsuki' means pound.
We eat mochi in many different way. Please try one.
