寂しい草原に埋めないでくれ

原曲は、瀕死の若いカ－ボ－イが、死んでもこんな淋しい草原に埋めないでくれ、と必死に頼む悲しい歌です。
しかし、この曲がわが国でも有名になったのは、映画｢駅馬車｣のテ－マに採用されたからでしょう。
｢駅馬車｣では、原曲と異なり早いテンポの軽快な曲になっています。
ここでは、最初に原曲に近い形で、次に｢駅馬車｣風に演奏します。

　　　　On his dying bed at the close of day.

　　　　But we took no heed to his dying prayer,

　　　　We buried him there on the lone prairie.

　　　1.｢こんな寂しい草原に埋めないでくれ、
　　　　狼が遠吠えし、風が吹きすさぶ、
　　　　縦6尺、横3尺の狭い墓穴に、
　　　　こんな寂しい草原に埋めないでくれ｣

　　　2.｢こんな寂しい草原に埋めないでくれ｣
　　　　この言葉は低く、悲しく聞こえた、
　　　　横たわった若者の青ざめた唇から、
　　　　日暮れ時、瀕死の寝床から。

　　　3.｢埋めないで・・｣、そこで彼の声は途切れた、
　　　　しかし、俺たちは彼の瀕死の願いを気にしなかった、
　　　　縦6尺、横3尺の狭い墓穴に、
　　　　寂しい草原のその墓穴に俺たちは彼を埋めた。
