Story and Description

Hanako-san is a hobgoblin lives in a toilet in a Japanese school. Her story is one of the very famous horror stories of school. She appeared in the 1980s. According to tradition, it is the soul of a girl who was murdered in the toilet, the soul of the girl that killed herself in the toilet or the soul of a girl that died in an air raid while she was in the toilet.

Hanako-san's story is very simple.
You knock on the door of the specific toilet of the school several times (usually, 3 times), then you call "Hanako-san". After that, you can hear her answer "Yes" from the toilet, but there is nobody in it. The voice is Hanako-san's. This is a basic pattern in Hanako-san stories. To tell the truth, there are many versions of stories about Hanako-san. One is that you turn around a few times in a place, then you call "Hanako-san" or "Hanako-san, play with me".

Although, there are also some versions where people are pursued by Hanako-san and she sticks them with a kitchen knife. This is not the primary version. Therefore, these versions may be made up by children who want a radical description.

Children like Hanako-san, because they can call Hanako-san very easy. Especially, in the primary version, Hanako-san only answers in the toilet, so no one is harmed by her.

 「花子さん」は、１９８０年代頃に現われたトイレにいる妖怪であり、「学校の怪談」として有名な話しの一つです。花子さんは、学校にいる妖怪として、日本のいたる学校のトイレにいるそうです。噂では、トイレで殺された少女の霊だとか、トイレで自殺した少女の霊だとか、トイレにいる時に空襲によって死んだ少女の霊だという説があります。

花子さんの基本的な話形は極めて単純です。
学校の特定のトイレを数回（主に三回）ノックしてから、「花子さん」と声をかけます。すると、誰もいないはずのトイレから「はーい」という返事が返ってくると言われています。その返事した声の持ち主こそが、花子さんです。これが、基本的な花子さんの話しです。実は、花子さんの話しには、いくつかのバージョンがあります。それは、何回かその場を回ってから、「花子さん」と呼ぶか、「花子さん、遊びましょ」と呼ぶことです。

その他まれに、花子さんに追いかけられたり、包丁で刺されたりするというバージョンもあるそうです。このバージョンはおそらく、より過激な描写を求める子供たちの手によって作られたものです。

花子さんを呼び出す呪文が簡単なためか、誰もが実行可能であることから、子供たちは花子さんが好きです。特に、初期の花子さんは、ただ返事をするだけだったので、こちらが危害を受ける恐れがありませんでした。
