Introduction

This project involves a unique form of instructions that will give high school and university students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in English classes, grammar forms and lexical items, to create computer generated short stories and poems, using NTT DoCoMo's current wireless mobile computer, Sigmalion III (Sig). The Sig computer is a mini notebook computer that weighs 455 grams. Participants in this project can access its Internet connection free of charge. The Sig uses Windows CE operating system. One limitation of the CE operating system is that memory intensive software program's files such as MS Word and PowerPoint are "read only". The Sig will be used in tandem with desktop computers. It is highly recommended that classes for students are conducted in their school's CALL classroom, with PowerPoint installed. PowerPoint will be the software program use to create digital kamisibai stories and poems. Due to the Sig's portability, students can devote time outside of class for pre-writing, editing, and revising their stories. The desktop computers in the CALL classroom will be used to put the finishing touches on the student's stories by importing graphics and applying animation to them during the production stage prior to converting their PowerPoint files to HTML, then uploading them to the website for viewing. High school students from Suita Higashi High School and Osaka Gakuin University High School will participate in this project, starting from January, 2004. One English class from Osaka Gakuin University will also participate in this project starting starting from October, 2003. Docomo will provide about 42 Sig computers for students and coordinating teachers. Aside from the Sig's small footprint of use and anywhere-anytime learning, students will have the opportunity to work closely with each other in small-group designated projects anywhere, anytime. For example, Students can share their ideas and solutions as they organize and plan their projects through e-mail and the posting of information on the Docomo or OGU website for project updates. This information can be accessed by the teacher to check on the group's progress. In addition, students will be able to schedule an e-mail chat meeting. This will give them an option to be involved in a real time e-mail exchanges. The Sig's power lies in its outside-of-class usage as a communication and planning tool. Especially suited for small-group project work, students must rely on their member's cooperation and individually assigned tasks. Thus, learning becomes socially oriented as students exchange ideas to develop and revise their projects. The teacher's role then becomes that of a "digital director", monitoring the group's progress via the Internet, and posting comments and suggestions to the group's webpage.

Purpose and Objectives

  1. The Sigma Project is a pilot project to develop efficient and useful ways for students and teachers to get the most of Sig's mobile features.

 2. Apply what students had learned in English classes through digital storytelling-the art of using current technology to communicate stories. All high school and university students participating in this project will gain a working knowledge of computers and software programs such as MS Word and PowerPoint, and understand the how the Sig, desktop computers, and the Internet will be used together to create, develop, and produce their own stories. The OGU staff will provide the necessary instructions concerning the operation and use of the desktop computers and software programs. Students will also know how to operate assigned Sigs and be able to access a website, view its contents, and upload and download data from both their Sigs and desktop computers. After the computer instructional phase is completed, students will start their first story writing project, a theme-based "Word Story" writing activity. The Word Story is a word-generated story. A more detailed explanation of the Word Story is given on the next slide. It is suggested that students complete the Word Story activity as a group project. Students will have an opportunity to work on individual activities, that will be described in the next slide.

Writing Activities

Three types of writing activities for high school students are suggested. As mentioned in the previous slide, The Word Story. Other activities include structured-generated activities for students who have little or no experience with creative writing and open-ended activities for students who would like to expand their creativity and self-expression. All grade level students will participate in the Word Story. The other two types of writing activities can be used as supplementary activities for warm-up prior to the Word Story, or as additional writing activities following the completion of the Word Story. The Word Story consists of Monbusho recommended lexical items for the respective grade levels. Using the grammar students are familiar with, they write a story based on a set of English words and phrases, categorized according to parts of speech. The words and phrases will be selected by the project coordinators. Please see the example a Word Story on the next slide. This example was developed by a group of junior high school English teachers during a recent workshop I had conducted.
