AFLATOXICOSIS

Cause : Aspergillus spp.

Transmission :
-Ingestion of aflatoxins, metabolities of the fungi A, flavus, and A. parasiticus.
-Intake of contaminated toxic stuff moldy peanuts, soybeans, cottonseeds, rice, sorghum, corn (maize and other cereasis)

Clinical signs and lesions :
-Blindness, walking in circles frequently falling, ear twitching, teeth grinding, diarrhea, severe tenesmus, and anal prolapse.
-Convulsion and abortion. Animal dies within 48 hours.
-Group calves ages 3-6 months are most susceptible.
-Acute cases : widespread hemorrhage and icterus.
-Liver shows marked fatty accumulations and massive centribular necrosis and hemorrhage.
-Edema of gallbladder.
-Gastrointestinal mucosa shows glandular atrophy and inflammation.
-Liver fibrosis (cirrhosis)

Recommendation :
-Avoidance of contaminated feeds by monitoring batches for aflatoxin content.
-Avoidance of moisture during processing feed.
