FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

Local name : FMD

Cause
: Picornaviridae with type O virus causing the epidemic in the country.

Transmission :
-Direct contact with infected animals through the vesicular fluid, saliva, breath, feces, urine, milk, meat, offals and hides.
-Indirect contact through contaminated human and objects, which include vecicles, beddings, clothing, foot wear, feed, hay, etc. Through the air at radius of 50 km.
-Susceptible animals are pigs, sheep, goats, carabaos and cattle. People can be carrier of FMD

Clinical signs and lesions :
-High fever in acute case but maybe absent in mild ones.
-Vesicles in the mouth and hooves, which may also appear in the udder, teats, conjuctiva, nasal passages, perineu and other thin-skinned areas.
-Salivation.
-Loss of appetite with lameness resulting to weight loss.

Recommendation :
-
Strengthen disease monitoring and meet inspection in slautherhouses in the locally.
-Implement strict quarantine measures in strategic locations to restrict movement of susceptible animals, products and by-products including mechanical FMD virus carriers from the infected carcass.
-Vaccination. Follow manufacturers recommendation. I recommend vaccination to suscepitible animals in infected areas.
-Information. Education and campaign on FMD and the role of the citizens in its prevention and control.
-There are few case to recovered for treatment of common lesions care, however not recommend.
