Foot Rot

Cause : Spherophorus necrophorus


Transmission :
-Discharges from the feet of infected animals.
-Infection gains entrance through abrasions on the skin on the lower part of the foot.

Clinical signs and lesions :
-Sudden severe lameness may be accomplished by a moderate fever.
-Temporary depression of milk yield in cows.
-Temporary infertility in bulls.
-Typical lesions occur in the skin at the top of the interdigital cleft and takes the form of a fissure with swollen protruding edges.



Recommendation :
-Systematic and local treatment on antibiotics and sulfonamides.
-Apply 3% formalin or 5% copper sulfate on affected areas.
-Filling in of muddy and stony patches in barnyards and lanes will reduce the incidence of the disease.
-Provision of foot bath containing 5-10% solution of copper sulfate in a doorway so that cows have to walk through it 2x daily, will practically eliminate the disease on dairy farms.
