Metritis

Local name : Nagahubad ang tagu-angkan, Nagahubad ang angkanan

Cause : Corynebacterium pyogenes


Transmission :
  • Ocuurs after abnormal parturition or gross uterine contamination.
  • Delayed uterine involution is a major predisposing factor.
  • Associated with stress caused by dystocia, abortion and malnutrition.



Clinical signs and lesions :
  • Fetid discharge from uterus.
  • In severely affected animals, the uterus is atonic and several gallons of fluid may accumulate.
  • Systemic signs include fever, anorexia and depression.
  • The uterus may be swoolen and fragile.
  • Chronically affected animals may lose condition, and fertility potential may be impaired.


Recommendation :
  • Proper management, sanitation, and handling of animals during parturition. An early post-partum period to prevent infection of uterus.
  • If artificial insemination is employed, semen should be free of possible infectious agent and be deposited in hygienic manner at mid-cervix or uterine body but not on the uterine horn.
  • Uterus should be irrigated by antibiotic or disinfection medicine, which is accompanied by antibiotic treatment.
