Paramphistomiasis

Cause : Paramphistomum spp.


Transmission : Ingestion of contaminatted pasture with encysted cercarise.

Clinical signs and lesions :
  • Heavy infection with immature flukes causes persistent diarrhea, weakness, depression, dehydration and inappetence.
  • Death usually occurs 15-20 days after the first signs appears.
  • In heavy infection loss of weight, anemia, rough dry coat and a drop in production.




Recommendation :
  • Control of snail host using appropriate molluscides and snail predators like ducks.
  • Drain stagnant ponds and canals to reduce snail population.
  • Fencing off infested areas to avoid grazing of animals on contaminated pasture.
  • Use of flukecides to control both mature and immature flukes.
