| Prolapse (Vaginal / Cervical) & Uterus

Cause :
- Predisposing factors are : Relaxation and
increased mobility of the soft tissue structures
in the pelvic canal and perineum as parturition
approaches.
- Increased abdominal pressure due to increasing
fetal size, intraabdominal fat, or rumen
distention.
- Herediatry factors.
- Prediposed by :(1) long mesometrial attachment
; (2) violet or strong tensmus ; (3) Arelaxed,
atomic, flaxxid uterus ; (4) excessive relaxation
of the pelvic and perineal region ; (5) dystocia
is likely to result in prolapse of the uterus
; (6) low plane of nutrition ; and (7) confined
or stabled cow that calved with their rear
parts sloping downwards and hanging over
the gutter,

Transmission : Apparently not hereditary although occasionally
it maybe seen in dam and daughter.

Clinical signs and lesions :
Everted vagina and cervix protruding and
hanging from the female genitalia.
The animal is usually recumbent but may be
standing, with the uterus hanging to the
hocks.
The uterus is usually enlarge and edematous
especially if the condition has exsted for
4 to 6 hours or longer.
The fetal membrance and / or mucus membrance
of the uterus is exposed and usually covered
with feces, straw, dirt, or blood clots;
Mild to moderate symptoms of tenesmus, restlessness,
pain, anxiety, anorexia, and increase in
pluse and respiration rate.

Recommendation :
- Immediate and careful manual manipulation.
- The handling of prolapse of the uterus in
cow can be made much earlier by instituting
the following measures : (1) wrap the uterus
in a wet towel / cloth or to place it in
a plastic bag to keep it moist and clean
until replaced ; (2) if the cow is standing,
the uterus should be raised and supported
same level with vulva until assistance arrives.
