Local name : Rabis

Cause : Rhabdovirus
|
Transmission :
- Inoculation of virus-laden saliva from the
bite of a rabid animal.
- Contamination of infact mucosa and wounds
/ scratiches with saliva or body fluids of
infected animals.
- Inhalation of aerosolized virus and tissue
transplant from undiagnosed rabid donor.
- Affects all mammals and avians including
human.

Clinical signs and lesions :
- Increase alertness, fever, puillary dilation
and increase muscular tone.
- Restlessness, watchful apprehensive look,
aimless running and unprovoked agressiveness.
- Inability to take food and water, paralysis
of the jaw and tongue, drooling of saliva
and paralysis of the hindquarters.
- Death occurs 3-7 days after manifestation
of initial signs,
- Incubation period vary from 10 to 30 days
after exposure.

Recommendation :
- Isolation of animal manifesting the disease,
In case the animal dies, with precautionary
measures, the head should be carefully removed
and properly handled, for examination at
the nearest Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic
Laboratory.
- Bite victims or persons exposed to the suspected
animal should consult a phsician for medical
advice.
- Strengthen LGU support to rabies prevention
and control programs.
